now that they announced the joint album Floating Points and Pharoah Sanders are doing together, it is much more joyful to see Sam talking passionately about Pharoah.
Promises is for me the best, most important and magical album ever. The way it touches my soul is just different. Thank thank thank you and may Pharaoh rest easy up there ❤ Wish I’ll have the privilege to share a moment with Sam in a studio
He’s one of those guys who makes music with raw instruments and electronics and great. He’s into jazz mainly, so when I first listened to the collab with sanders, I was in zen mode.
I really liked this episode / installment a lot more then some of the others primarily cause he went to the Song level--like it was not just the album, but the actual track + musicians on that specific track that made it meaningful to him...also, sharing the context in which he played it, heard it for the first time, how he was going to share it with really helped....Keep up the great work!
Besides being one of my favorite electronic musicians on earth, a serious composer, you just dropped some absurdly beautiful music that I've never heard of. You did a good thing. I can only characterize my reaction to Pharoah Sanders' music, not by words, but by the stupid look on my face. I just had a stupid look on my face for minutes in a row of shear dumbfoundedness, because I couldn't believe my ears were hearing music this beautiful. Keep being creative and weird and making people dance.
I learned about that Mary Clark record from one of James Blake's radio shows like 5 years ago, and he already mentioned that Floating Points was playing it out a lot then. Cool to see the record again in this series, amazing tune
I listened to him almost exclusively for a good year. And then I saw him live in San Francisco. The show started 45 minutes late, he did a short set, and then didn't do an encore :( people were so mad. He's still such an amazing artist to me though
oh shit, i almost went to that show (but the ticket prices were pretty fuckin hefty, courtesy of eternal douchefucks ticketmaster). i'm curious, how long was his/their set?
It couldn't have been more than 40 minutes. I know that's a good amount for a set. But when it's Floating Points and the songs are so long. It felt like he played 5 songs and bounced
This guy really knows jazz/fusion. And not a SunRa record among the lot, wonderful. No shade on SunRa, but he is the go to guy when you want to show that you like jazz but are hip to the avant-garde.
this guy was the best one of these ive seen so far. most of the time its such a disappointment to see someone like lee renaldo pick out a paul mccartney record or something like that. this guy gets it. and his album that came out last year or whatever was one of a an extremely small amount of new electronic music that i actually liked.
Yeah, it definitely sounds a lot different than the beginning of that song, but it's still the same track. The sample we used comes in much later: ua-cam.com/video/5aoSMnvje6A/v-deo.htmlm35s
Dude went from talking about a Pharaoh Sanders record to making one with Pharaoh Sanders. Lucky guy.
Was about to say the same thing
And what a record it is
@@connors.8618 so lovely
They possibly might have approached each other at that point I guess, as the album is said to be 5 years in the making...but cool nonetheless
I think the album turned out being legendary too.
he went from talking about Pharoah Sanders to dropping one of the best albums of the year with Pharoah Sanders, legend
now that they announced the joint album Floating Points and Pharoah Sanders are doing together, it is much more joyful to see Sam talking passionately about Pharoah.
he's such an earnest music nerd it's so cute
Floating Points, from what I've seen, is very good live
Yeah, saw him last summer. Pure magic.
what a man, seen him a couple of times and his selection is always unreal
Love his music, and his picks are great as well (no surprise). Thanks Amoeba for this series.
Thanks for watching!
Sam Shepherd, an international treasure.
Very humble individual. This was a pleasant watch
Sam's a genius. About time he was on this. Kuiper is such a beautiful song.
He's one of only a handful of today's electronica artists I can listen to without getting bored
Electronica lol
The jazz musician of the electronic music world. No surprise he got all jazz albums! ✌🏼
Dude knows his stuff.
This is one of my fave Bag videos! Always love the jazz heads.
This might be the best WIMG episode ever. I also finally listened each of the picks and every single one is "stunning!" to use his words....
I agree
this guy was great as were his choices. Pharoah Sanders is one of my favorite artists of all time! this guy rocks!
Love Floating Points music and his selection of music was superb.
Promises is for me the best, most important and magical album ever. The way it touches my soul is just different. Thank thank thank you and may Pharaoh rest easy up there ❤

He is a total legend! He has done so much for music and his live/dj shows are so memorable.

That was for +R. Pneumo
He’s one of those guys who makes music with raw instruments and electronics and great. He’s into jazz mainly, so when I first listened to the collab with sanders, I was in zen mode.
You can tell how much he loves music just listening to him talk about records. Love FP.

I don't know where I would be without The Edge Of Daybreak, all thanks to this video. Just an incredible album.

Damn this dude is a jazz nerd for real. Not hating. Appreciating!

Every time I come back to this video I get a little something more out of it!
Haha nice avatar. I lived through the 90s too and saw that thing rotating soooo much!

Amoeba does it again.. Always love to watch these interesting posts.. Costs me a fortune... 😂

These recommendations are gold.
Seriously, we need to protect him at all costs
Nice, that's a great Gunter Hampel LP! Cool to see some free jazz on this series. Killin' it!

Great picks!
I come back to this every year for the last 4 years and i find another nugget every time. An absolute black hole of knowledge Sam is
Sam knows his music. Great episode. Thanks

had the exact same experience in chicago. one of the most disappointing gigs of my life. still love his records / djing though.
This guy really knows jazz/fusion. And not a SunRa record among the lot, wonderful. No shade on SunRa, but he is the go to guy when you want to show that you like jazz but are hip to the avant-garde.
All of these picks look interesting, great episode!
What a great series. I really need to catch up on previous episodes.
Edit: woah there are 10 seasons, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED :D
Great episode
Dont know him but dig his taste in jazz, well done sir. Strong pulls.
Love the man's music. His taste is par for the course. I'd go for a pint with the lad.
You should do a video with DJ Koze...

Science Fiction is something else, Rock the Clock is mega.
Wait, you can actually find an Ebonite record at Amoeba?? That's insane. I wonder how much it cost...
Just a guy who really loves music; we are still waiting for Interpol.
I would love to see the Sleaford Mods what's in my bag? X
every song reminded me of ron burgundy
Interesting picks. Gotta check 'em out!
PLASTIC PEOPLE RIP. Banger of a fucking spot
Floating points and Leifur James need to collab
sweet rare picks
Up until this, I thought I was somewhat knowledgeable about music...
pharoah sanders!
Good bloke.
Damn, Pharoah Sanders vinyl is not cheap anymore. I think this guy might be a big reason why.
pls do a video with kevin abstract!!! plus i'm pretty sure he's based in la !
Does anyone know which Pharoah Sanders song that is? He says it's "Love is Everywhere," but that doesn't sound like it...
Yeah, it definitely sounds a lot different than the beginning of that song, but it's still the same track. The sample we used comes in much later: ua-cam.com/video/5aoSMnvje6A/v-deo.htmlm35s
thank you british fantano
41/2 *. Significant
Can we get a tracklist for the tracks in the background?
Ye
Listen to Sam. He knows. x
He bought library music - american library music, the ebonite one.
What song is playing as he talks about Joel Stones?
Wtf is that Virginia state penitentiary recording he was talking about? No info online that I could find on a quick google search
Here it is: www.amoeba.com/eyes-of-love-lp-the-edge-of-daybreak/albums/3735381/
samfloatingpoints
What did he say about the full stop on boot legs or something??
In the text on the inner label on the bootleg, there was no "." after the "mfg" but on a legitimate pressing it would read "mfg."
my kind of man
please can somone tell me what was the song at the end ?
I just came for the 2:34 piinnnnngggg
I imagine it's very unlikely but you should try to get Death Grips on.
Unlikely to happen, but we have extended an invitation.
This guy is the Edgar Wright of music
now where's my pen...
Thought it was melon head from the thumbnail for a sec
