Saturn plays outrun at 60FPS via a hidden option menu on the Japanese release and it makes a world of difference. Space Harrier is also 60 FPS. Afterburner is 30 and so is Power Drift.
It’s one of these arcade ports where yes it’s a few FPS less then the arcade but sega was able to nail the graphics PERFECTLY! I just ordered the Japanese sega Saturn version off amazon I can’t wait to own it in my Japanese Saturn collection! ❤️
the arcade rotates the sprites when going around corners, the saturn looks like it applies the rotation to the screen as a whole which is a cheaper way of doing it (one rotation on the final image rather than rotating each sprite individually in the image). you can see tops of trees and the road clipping off the top and bottom of the image on the saturn when you corner.
Arcade mode: Wait for the title screen, then press A + C + START on JoyPad 2. Smooth mode (Overseas and Japan levels): Go to Options to highlight Game Mode, then hold A + C > Left (or) Right.
No smooth mode on this. That's outrun. As outrun ran at 30fps arcade- understand the y board was far more powerful than the outrun board by quite a bit.
The arcade cabinet was rated for 100 V 60 Hz AC with 350 W max power consumption, so I would definitely expect it to deliver 30 FPS which the arcade game did run at officially.
Other than frame rate (60 on arcade, 30 on Saturn), both versions are identical. And there might be a 60 fps code for the home version as there was for Outrun.
There's not. Outrun was 30 in the arcades. The hidden mode was a bonus feature to make it "better than arcade". Saturn PD isn't 60 cause it can't do it, unlike with outrun.
Y board is also far more powerful than the outrun board. It is to do with rotation of sprites, the Saturn version rotates image as a whole as instead of individual 275 sprites as example. Y board has no background either. Everything is a sprite. Quite different from derived hang on board to outrun board then to the x board.
In fact, the Saturn version is using higher resolution assets that what it displays. The programmers have systematically activated high speed shrink mode, which samples half of the texture pixels when it is downscaled. It accelerates downscale, but if the width of the downscaled sprite is higher than 50% of the original texture width, some pixels are doubled, as if the texture was first downscaled horizontally by 50% and then upscaled to the required ratio. So when a sprite such as the start sign is only slightly downscaled, all of the displayed pixels are doubled which doesn't look good. I wish they had only activated high speed shrink when the width of the downscaled sprite is lower than 50% of the original texture, because it eliminates this kind of artifact.
Yeah, but how many people back in the day had an arcade cabinet sitting in their living room to compare with? If you didn't know about the frame rate difference, you'd swear it was arcade perfect.
Infelizmente a versão do Saturn perdeu um pouco do Rate-Frame em comparação com a do Arcade, mas as duas são bem identicas, de mesma resolução e lidas! =D
You'd think that by the time the Saturn port came out there wouldn't be any differences even when porting over a game from 1988...so I am surprised to see the comments about the frame rate not being 60fps, as since the very beginning the Saturn was developed as a 2D powerhouse...
Actually I just shows how far and powerful those Sega arcade boards are. The Y board was insanely powerful, it wasn't just an upgrade to the x board that powered after burner which in turn was a build up from the hang on and outrun board - the Y board as example; everything is sprite (much like neo geo) and full on rotation of sprites. All back in 88.

Mr. 2cents. I was just gonna say this conversion right here just shows that the sega was a beast!, even though sega had the drop the Saturn version down to 30 FPS instead of the arcade y board 60 FPS they still made sure that the graphics part and sound on the Saturn home port was arcade perfect and identical, and the 30 FPS never wavers and stays consistent ❤️💯 I just ordered the Japanese sega Saturn version off of amazon along with the 💯% arcade perfect port of outrun on the Japanese sega Saturn as well! ❤️
Yeah, I was thrilled when that was released. I had been thinking of importing the Saturn version for awhile but the price was always off putting to me.
Wow, I never imagined arcade games of the late eighties being somewhat better than the 32 bit Saturn!!! Does that mean final fight and street fighter 2 in the arcades were 32 bit, rather than 16 bit like I'd always imagined them to be?????
Arcade cabinets back then usually had very expensive hardware way out of pocket for a typical console consumer costing well above $3k . They were high-end multi cpu and multi gpu architectures that were pretty hard to program to. So yeah it was probably 32 bit
@@vMUREKv Ya, wikipedia says the first ever 32 bit arcade game was NARC made in 1988, so I'm guessing near enough every arcade game made after that would've been 32 bit, since they would've always been made the most advanced hardware available, wouldn't they?????

As others have said, the 60fps of the arcade version gives it the edge. I'm not sure why the Saturn version was locked to 30fps, I don't see anything in the specs of the Sega Y Board to suggest it has the edge here.
I'm going to take a guess and say it's because the programmers didn't use both cpu to handle the game. It really should have done the game at 60fps but when programmers don't take advantage of everything in the system a game ends up losing something.
It's almost the same and 100% sync with the original arcade version. Without using the same code, how is it possible to port this complex game so perfectly? I don't think the sega developers used C-code for the original Power Drift development (at that time, they used assembly language in an x68000 emulator)
Yep I guess this one was a little tough on it in 60. At least afterburner goes to 60. Even outrun can be set to 60 and I think that one was only 30 in the arcade. 30 don't ruin the game, I have the 32x afterburner and it's fine. 60 looks and prolly feels better but 30 is ok.
check it out i got the whole soundtrack from the arcade up on my channel, was the reason for creating my channel, my love for this game is immense the music is some of the best sega ever did.

An inexcusably mediocre port of the original 16-bit arcade, The Saturn is a far more powerful hardware and this port has smaller sprites, lower frame rate, less color and low resolution, shame on you Sega, that is why you failed miserably in the home front!
Despite running at 30 fps, the Saturn handles these Super Scaler games beautifully.
