a great conversion. Played this everyday on my old megadrive. People complaining about colour, pls understand the megadrive had a limited colour palette. Thanks to the MD version i was able to kick ass on the arcade version :)
Back in the day I was so appreciative that this obscure arcade game was on the Genesis, I remember playing this and just loving it at a liquor store by my house as a kid, but totally disappointed when they replaced it with Ms. PacMan of all things, a couple of years later I got a Genesis and to my surprise a kid in school claimed he had it and I didn't beleive him till' he brought it and let me borrow it and damn back then it seemed arcade perfect to me so I just let him keep my copy of Thunder Force 2 that I let him borrow for it and traded it...the Genesis version is as fun and a real close port of it.
Midnight Resistance is a decent playthrough. The rotary controller on the arcade does take a little getting used to. IMO the biggest flaw with the arcade version is that the hardware itself is underpowered or the game isn't well-coded for performance. In a playthrough on real hardware, as you get closer to the end of the game, the frame rate can drop to as low as 10 frames per second (so the game runs at 1/3 speed of normal) at times as the action really heats up. The Genesis/Mega Drive version has far fewer performance issues.
The game has lots of slow down but rotary joystick is the best ever controller for these type of run n gun games and unfortunately only this game has these controls. I want to be able to move my character back and forth while still pointing the gun upwards in a daigonal. Not possible in metal slug or contra
Little details that were missing used to drive me nuts when I was a kid. Like the little burst of fire when your bullets connect is nonexistent in the home port.
The Genesis could have almost matched the arcade despite a smaller range of colors to choose from, but the developers just didn't handle the hardware properly at all. According to game color hacker Pyron, sprites and backgrounds of the first 3 stages share a single 16-color palette. It could have been 4 times that amount T-T
@@kenbrisby4825 It's not that the lack of memory would make two player impossible (all they have to do is palette swap the main character). It's the fact the game performance will get as bad as the arcade version in single player if they did add it.

The Mega Drive port plays great and the music is fantastic, but the use of colour is very poor and bears little resemblance to the arcade original. The Mega Drive was capable of a lot better, as proven by the Pyron colour hack.
molhoy Bullshit.... The mega drive version did very good for what it was able to do in 91. A color hack? Please.. that's 20 something years after the release😩
I played the arcade game faithfully in 89..... When it came to Megadrive.. the only thing I hated was it was one player. Other than that.. it was a very good conversion.
The frustration is real... The soundtrack turned stellar with this Mega Drive/Genesis port but no frigging co-op? I mean, why?! Didn't Gunstar Heroes or Contra Hard Corps (among many others Mega Drive games) provide co-op gameplay while being much more frantic? Even earlier releases such as Forgotten Worlds have such option so there's no excuse for this single player restriction. Then I personally like some colors choices with some strong tones but there are a few areas where the colors use could have ben better. Also I'd have liked more animation frames here and there and the voices when you pick up weapons wouldn't have hurt either but on other hand the audio atmosphere when you're in the weapons room is impressive! Overall a decent port which could have been better but it was one of the first Data East releases on Mega Drive and they improved later on with higher quality ports such as Two Crude Dudes or the fantastic Atomic Runner!
SDS Overfiend You know, meantime I thought that people might have found my comment here to be somehow harsh but, as I said, it's *not* a bad port, it's just that the lack of co-op makes no sense (the others complaints I made are secondary). Eh, I have a copy of it after all meaning that it's at least reasonably good :P
psyance Your comment is perfect. I cried about this ask a child when I brought the game because I thought I was getting a 2 player version.. They rushed it. No reason this couldn't be 2 players compared to Forgotten Worlds...
SDS Overfiend Yeah I saw your comment when the video was posted & understood both your enthusiasm & frustration. But back then things were a bit different, see me, I only had access to the Atari ST version but I still have great memories playin' it! But nowadays I'd rather play the Mega Drive port (even more since I'm a VGM whore & the soundtrack by H. Sakimoto is just DOPE).
psyance Yessir!!! I had no complaints about the title. The soundtrack is far better than the arcade..I had no idea who was behind it but he finessed it.. Stage 2 is by far my favorite and I like 3 for the thrill on the lifts.
Let’s ask this, is the shoot button still automatic In the arcade version Not rapid fire, what I mean is, if you tap the shoot button, will it keep auto firing?
Amiga version has poor and weak music and ugly pale colors. They've still removed the parallax scroll. Weak port. Many ports on the Amiga were made on the "knee"
The only home port of Data East's arcade game, same as Crude Buster. It loses detail and colour compared to the og, being an early port - also runs in lo res mode - but makes up for it with the storming Sakimoto arrangement of the soundtrack. Tbh, I love this game and always have. The setpiece with the jet squadron against the setting sun, taken out by one man is surely one of the greatest in video games.
A great port, though the controls are tricky at first. My favorite control setting is mode B-1, with the rotate button alternating between clockwise and counterclockwise. Hitoshi Sakimoto's soundtrack is superior to the arcade's.
essa trilha sonora deixa no chinelo esse lixo de funk que temos hoje !! na moral !!!! saudade dessa criatividade de pegar uma trilha em 8 bits e transforma la numa Orchestra, os caras eram gênios !!!!
Granted, it looks a bit drab and washed out on the Megadrive, as if it considered being a C64 game but thankfully drew the line while it was still faithful in all important aspects. And as mentioned, the music absolutely kicks arse and it uses what advantage it does have - that powerful Motorola 68000 "blast" processor - to good effect, making for a smoother if somewhat less pretty game.
Not just that. but more space which allows for better graphics. If you look at Ranger-X, the colors used equal or exceed that of the Midnight Resistance arcade PCB.
