Hey look, it's a non-Sinnoh cover from insaneintherain during the Year of Sinnoh! Long story short, I was feeling a bit of burnout from focusing just on the Diamond and Pearl stuff, and I felt like I wasn't doing enough service to the viewers, especially viewers who may not be quite as familiar or appreciative of the music of Sinnoh as I am. Becaues of all that, I decided to take a bit of a break from the Sinnoh stuff, and cover some other tracks that you guys suggested I give some love to!
One of these tracks is this one - Unfinished Business from Skullgirls! Now, full disclosure, I haven't actually played Skullgirls, but I did a fair bit of research on the game and watched quite a bit of footage from the game to really understand the context that this music is heard in. Any game that's crazy enough to create a character whose attacks are all based on musical instruments and is straight up named "Big Band" is definitely a game worth checking out! I really love Big Band's design, especially since it strikes my particular interest in jazz music super well, so I thought it'd be more than appropriate to go full-on bebop jazz with this theme!
The original version of this theme has a more funky backbeat style to it, which I think suits hearing it in the context of a fighting game. I envisioned it with more of a double time feel, switching between an afro-cuban pattern and swing pattern in the rhythm section, which I think works super well! One of the challenges that I faced with this arrangement was how to make sense of the original song, since there's a lot of improvisatory bits, and not really one strong melody that goes throughout the composition. I was a bit torn on how much of the source material to include in this version in a way that didn't sound like endlessly playing random solo licks, while also retaining enough spontaneity. In the end, I settled on turning the tune into an AABA form, where each A is a minor blues featuring the first statement of the melody from the original recording, and the B section is actually a bebop interpretation of that awesome bari solo at the beginning of the tune! From there, I went through the standard "jam session arrangement" of head, solos, trading, and head out, giving the alto, bari, and tenor all full chorus-long solos, which really pushed the length of this arrangement. 9 minute arrangements aren't super common for typical uploads, but I think the variety in this one keeps it from not getting too boring. I made some conscious choices to vary the accompaniment behind each solo so the solos didn't all sound the same! I went with a typical fast swing behind the alto solo, starting off with half time swing in the bari solo (then speeding up later), and going for a more spacey McCoy Tyner + Coltrane-esque tenor solo background section. Pretty happy with how this came out for having so much trouble dealing with the source material!
A few things to note about the actual recording of this video: first off, I'm playing alto! I'm currently borrowing this alto saxophone from a friend of mine who plays in a Berklee wind ensemble that I am participating in. It's a Selmer Reference 54, and it's a super nice horn! I'm using a Selmer C* mouthpiece (which, oddly enough, sounds pretty nice on this horn... not a mouthpiece I would normally use at all on tenor or bari), and Vandoren 2 reeds. I won't have this alto forever, so I figured I'd make a few covers using it. Next, I'm using a new tenor mouthpiece and new reeds! A while ago, Shape Your Own Sound (SYOS) came to Berklee to do a demonstration of their mouthpieces, and I got totally hooked on them. I'm all for cool new innovations when it comes to musical instrument technology, and I think SYOS is revolutionizing the world of mouthpieces. I had a custom one made back in December, but it honestly wasn't my favorite mouthpiece. However, when I recently tried using a slightly softer reed on it, it completely opened up and changed for the better! I love this mouthpiece now, and I'm almost completely sold on using it as my primary mouthpiece (hopefully you guys will be able to get your hands on one like it soon!)
Hope you all enjoy!

Me and one of my best friends Aidan found Skullgirls about two months ago. We've never stopped playing since then. Before school starts, during band camp, every chance we can get. We both LOVE Big Band and Jazz music. Big Band looks and acts just like my dad so that's why I main him (my dad loves jazz too). I can't wait to show Aidan this, and I'm gonna show this to my dad cause he used to play the sax in his old band.
That’s so freaking cool, thanks so much for sharing that story!!!

MY MAN FINALLY DID THE JAZZIEST TRACK IN THE WHOLE GAME, LET'S GOOOOOOOOO
I love the fact that during the trading sax solos between bar/tenor/alto and then drum fills in between them is that I could totally see that as 3 different people going up and trading solos, each with their own character to them. It felt like a full jazz band was playing it rather than just one person.
THE LAUNCH PARTY NEVER ENDS
i can't believe big band became real
I’m lOVING this arrangement overview at the beginning, it’s very minor but looks really good
Big Band, the one character that immediately got me hooked on the game. As an alto sax player, he was an obvious choice for a main for me. And when I heard the OST of BBs Theme, I really enjoyed the groove but if course always found it to be a little reptitive. Which is why I extremely love your version of the theme. It kept that nice groove I love but added more to it to make it less repetitive which I love even more. Two thumbs up 👍👍
I love the year of sinnoh stuff, but ngl I have missed this style of insaneintherain vid. Nostalgic vibes all around. Thank you for continuing to kill it and giving me a new absolute bop to listen to now!
Thanks! Yeah, me too, I’m looking forward to getting back to the old style of IITR videos :)
This is incredible. Can you do "The Crowd Goes Home" at some point in the future?

Holy shit, I just realized he includes the sheet music. For free. Legend.
I actually remember hearing this song in the background of one of your Instagram stories a while back. At the time, I was like, "he isn't actually doing it, is he?" But this.... this absolutely made my day. Thank you for this.
Gen 4 never sounded like this, but I'm not complaining. Good to see you playing on a traditional drum set! As a jazz drummer myself, I love the feel of a real kit vs. an electronic set, but that's my preference.
Also, that trench coat is syper spiffy!
Emm Bee Sea this is not Pokémon but yeah it really good
Gen 4?
Same here man, acoustic is soooo nice with good cymbals. Meanwhile electronic would take a fortune before it felt anything like a "real" kit!
@@jeterpilled_memester with a fortune do you mean 650€ for a Millennium 850?
@@BrunoNeureiter Electronics blow when it comes to cymbals and responsiveness, that is why.
I'll be sure to check out said e-drum kit model tho
Edit: i can't exactly tell, but the cymbal sounds aren't as varied as real cymbals(no ride/slight crash/full crash sound differences)
Definitely did NOT expect Skullgirls music, quite a nice surprise.

Finally a skullgirls cover! The jazzy music of this game deserves some recognition~~
4:00 is absolutely wicked and people are sleeping on it. You nailed the whole song!
Gotta say. As a drummer myself, you really did nail the drum part. There were some more rhythmically challenging parts to it and you did great with it. Can't wait to see more from you. And hopefully as you do more it becomes easier for you so you don't have to spend as much time practicing it.
Thanks! I had to spend a lot of time practicing to get the part at the level I wanted at! Still a lot to improve at tbh, but I’m looking forward to using acoustic drums in more videos!
I had a dream... that you’d do this track.
6:38 The Leo P intensifies.
You have no idea how innately happy this has made me. Skullgirls has such a uniquely diverse soundtrack, and I never really thought of you doing a cover of one of my fav songs from the game. If you are taking suggestions, I was thinking of perhaps doing a cover of Hellwalker from the DOOM soundtrack- a bit of a stretch, but I feel it's more relaxed compared to the other pieces in that game. But anyways, wonderful work.
I love the costumes, the full drum set, and the pure energy this arrangement gives off. It’s like 2am and this is keeping me sane while I freak out about my sleep schedule and my classes.

This solo break gets me every time
Awesome work as always! Your channel has inspired me to start arranging some video game tunes myself!

good job btw
Stuff like this is why I love UA-cam so much: incredibly talented, hard-working people bringing us amazing music. It takes a ton of dedication to be able to play three different saxophones, to say nothing of piano and drums, plus the ability to arrange a song for all of them and overdub yourself playing it. Simply amazing.
As a bari player, I've always adored this song. Thank you
Oh wow! This is one of my favorite tracks from Skullgirls, nice!
This is the first time I've heard or seen this channel, and I've just become a Skullgirls fan recently. Furthermore, this is the best cover I've heard so far! Encore!
Well, welcome to the channel! Glad to hear you enjoyed my cover! :)
I love the improv on this track, you absolutely killed it! Feel like it really fits perfectly with the character and also the style of the song.
The skullgirls track in general is such a bop already but this I’d play at parties or while playing uno it’s just so awesome
I've never heard the song that this is based on but honestly it sounds like it could be a recording of Ronnie Cuber from 3 decades ago. This is a work of art
Never have I clicked on a video so fast
You did it AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!! Holy wow, I can feel all of your intensity, drive and passion through all of this, you’ve truly gotten to the top levels of improvising on tenor, bari and alto and it flows and grooves so hard! The acoustic set just, mmmmmm👌, you’re sounding like freaking Ronnie Cuber, Sonny Stitt, Michael Brecker, Dexter Gordon, and even Cannonball Adderly at the times you’re feeling it, combining those sounds and doing it in your signature soloing style of telling clear, communicative and storybuilding phrases with awesome tone and great sense of the larger arranging picture before and after!! I’m sorry for rambling on, but this gets me so excited to jam to, enjoy you at your best so far, and now inspiring me to get some great practice in! In those toughest moments where you’re trying to push or get through tough times, I want you to know that you’re awesome Carlos, truly awesome!😄🖐

One of my favorite things about this channel, which I think is not talked about enough, is how a lot of these covers are actually schoolwork. Since last I was aware Carlos was studying for a Composition degree at Berklee, he takes advantage of the composition assignments he's given and arranges video game music to fit the composition requirements, then he records himself playing them to upload. He's killing 2 birds with one stone and that level of H U S T L E is super admirable, and it makes me happy to see him take what could be soul-crushing work and not only slay with it, but make some money on the side. It's genius and it's one of the reasons Carlos is an icon to me.
I've been listening to your music for years, on many different accounts, and I'm just working on my homework tonight, with this beautiful jazz to help me relax, and 6:57 happens, so I have to pause my homework and listen on repeat to that smooth lick input on the Bari. Also, impressive recording the whole 9 min on each instrument in that trench coat.
