I've spent a whole year and some change covering Gen 4 Pokémon music... so why not spend a little bit of time with Gen 3? For those of you who don't know, I released an album WAY back in 2014 called "Back To Your Littleroots". It was my first ever video game music arrangement album, and started my trend of creating Pokémon-themed video game arrangement albums! I think it goes without saying that my music-making abilities in 2014 were WAY different than what they've turned into today in 2021, so I thought it'd be fun to revisit one of my favorite tunes from Gen 3, and see how my interpretation of it has changed... 7 years later. In the grand scheme of things, 7 years isn't a lot of time, but for me, it feels like forever. I was in high school when I covered this for the first time!
With live music returning to a fuller extent across the United States, I recently had the opportunity to see Herbie Hancock perform here in Seattle, and seeing that show really reminded me just how much I love jazz and his particular style of music! I like music from a lot of different styles, of course, but there's something special about small jazz ensembles going at it and playing a tune together, and that inspired me to arrange this song in this way. There are times when the musical situation calls for a full expanded orchestration, and I think this is not one of those situations, so it was nice to just record some sax, piano, bass, and drums for this. I really dig how groups like the Yellowjackets use synthesizers along the typical piano sound - the long intro in this arrangement wouldn't be nearly as cool without that fluffy pad behind the piano sound :)
Hope you all enjoy this! Will probably be uploading some Deltarune covers soon after this one - I've had a lot of stuff going on lately, but I feel like I'm moving in a positive direction, and that's always a good thing :)

Thank you Carlos. Honestly made my day better with this.
Hiiii
Hey you’re that guy that liked the rainbow road song
Ohhhh yeah! Thats the song you use for your background. (since i skipped hoenn in third gen i usually instantly relate this song to you)
Mine too
@@antoniosalazar6699 i cant believe you skipped gen 3
You guys realize that if a dude his age back in the 1920s or 30s could play every instrument in a band like this he would be world famous?
It's just as amazing now, but I feel like it's underappreciated.
I mean, if he could do that simultaneously and sync it up like Carlos does he'd be famous for two reasons.
I don't think it would matter all that much. You can't play them simultaneously and mutlitrack tech didn't exist back then. You can do much more with it now.
@@jerrodshack7610 Multitrack did actually exist on very expensive tapes! Just barely got any use. First recorded example (excuse the pun) goes all the way back to Louis Armstrong and the Hot Five, where all they had was one RCA microphone between them. Previously they’d all stood around it so, of course, anyone performing beyond the range of the pickup pattern was at best muffled and at worst lost altogether
@@peterweatherley7669 that's very interesting, thank you!
@@peterweatherley7669 you should make a UA-cam video on that. I would enjoy that type of content
Ah yes, the route home to my favourite Hoenn Pokemon, Skarmory
Skarmory and Spinda :)
*Actualy a Johto pokemon, but I always forget about it too. I also love Skarmory and it seems to belong to route 113.
@@joaovictor_of Yeah, I remember being surprised when I learned skarmory was a Johto pokemon because I associate it with Hoenn route 113 so strongly. I don't actually ever remember encountering it in Silver/SoulSilver.
@@AuraLeafstorm it's always been a rare gold exclusive from rt 44 iirc in both gens 2 and 4.
@@gsumbreon It's a Silver/Soulsilver exclusive actually! It's in Crystal too
Ooh, Spinda's Lament (always found the naming clever) is back, and sounding even better than ever! ^_^
Real OG's know the original name...
I call it spinda route
Ye I prefer that name to reminds me of midnas lament from Zelda twilight princess both equally as magical songs
This was always one of the most beautiful routes in the series. The theme isn't one that I'd expect to lend itself so well to Jazz, but it just goes to show the versatility of the genre and your talent as a musician. Fantastic job!
For me it's actually one of the easiest Pokémon tunes to turn into jazz 😅 Maybe it's just how I first heard it when I played the game all those years ago... than you!
to see how far you’ve come, it’s really like you’re going back to your (little)roots and i’m so glad that you’re recovering songs. this was amazing, thank you so much
as someone who liked his older music more
(such as preferring the older Eterna Forest version to the newer one)
it's less that he has improved immensely and more that his style has changed, IMO
@@internetguy7319 Agreed. His older songs tend to feel more atmospheric such as the OG Eterna Forest, whereas the more recent remixes focus more on sounding like an actual orchestra you'd heard at like Proctors Theatre. So it's mostly just the style that's changed since he was always good.
I find it really cool that your songs are just as good with a lot less instruments, they also sound quite different.
@@internetguy7319 No, he has improved immensely, in all his music related skills, not just playing or composing, but also editing, mixing, directing, etc. But because of those skills his new covers are much more distant from the originals
Ayy, clever pun XD
And agreed, thanks, Carlos!
Any music from Emerald resonates with me in the way that only your favourite childhood game can.
Same! It was my first Pokémon game back in 2008. Although I could have played the DS games like my classmates, I really loved Emerald. It still has a special place in my heart.
When you've spent hours filling the soot sack and still don't have enough for the Black Flute
You can never forget The Route of Ashes... something about how the area was dyed so grey when the transition from GBC had just happened felt fitting.
Green sprouting from the grass at a touch, splashes of red when the ninja kids came out of hiding from their little lumps.
Good times.
My absolute favorite route in all of Pokémon, always has been, anyone else? Village Bridge is my favorite town
Village Bridge is another great one. Similar vibes to this song I think.
Route 12 from the gen 5 games is criminally underrated if you ask me. Village Bridge is also a bop
With all the instruments that Carlos can play, Village Bridge could be a wonder!
5:22 that moment in the piano solo when the band switches over to a swung waltz for a little bit is so perfect i cant get over it
Gen 3's music has always stood out to me. It is great to see you giving it some love, thank you.
This feels wholesome
It’s definitely a vibe
Brings me back to the days of collecting ash. Collected Spinda with all their different patterns as well. The music made that busywork much more pleasant, and this is a beautiful rendition, very calming.
Even if Gen 4 is better in a lot of ways, Gen 3 will always have a most special place in my heart.
All the patterns you say?
@@BigGamer2525 haha not quite all of them, I worded that strangely. I meant each one that I found that had a unique pattern. A few rare times I saw duplicates, which is why child me was so convinced there was a limited pool of patterns. I ended up filling multiple boxes until I was done collecting ash and moved on to the next zone.
@@siegwardinspirit The odds of you finding the same spinda pattern is literally 1 in 8.5 billion, since thats how many spinda patterns there are.
@@BigGamer2525 maybe they were just very similar. It's been more than a decade since I last played it, so I won't claim that my memory is accurate.
I've been silently following your channel for maybe 8 years now? Just wanted to say that everything you do is incredible and inspires me deeply in many ways. I'm sure there's thousands of others who feel as I do, as well. Thank you for all you do and keep playing :)
Yessss, fr tho anytime you ever release anything it always makes me very emotional. I grew up with the soundtracks and they're basically implanted in my head now. I know every single note and the jazz style is perfect for vgm in my opinion.
he really took the heart back he gave me on this comment 😭
I think I double clicked by accident 😭

Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh truly have the best music in all the Pokémon franchise. Change my mind. For route themes specifically: Route 47 from Johto, this one from Hoenn, and 225 from Sinnoh. Best arrangement of 113 if heard yet! Keep it up man!
This is well beyond a Jazz Cover, this is an experience.
I actually cried, my dude. Holy shit. I cannot be happier by your constant and steady improvement basically every video...arrangement-wise....solo-wise...the whole 9 yards. You still have so many great things ahead of you and I couldn't be happier to be there for it so many miles away.
Oh my God, you've awoken such a deep, nostalgic memory in me with this. I can still remember traversing the ash filled grass, catching my first Skarmory and Spinda here, talking to the crazy man that trades collected ash for flutes and furniture... Thank you, thank you for this.
Spinda, Spanda, Spindy, Spun. Two Route 113 covers are better than one!
Sounding like Wigglytuff there...!
Carlos not only got better as a musician over the years, but buffer ;D
It’s cause instead of normal white bread he’s gone insaneinthegrain and lifting to get insaininthegains
After listening to Sinnohvationevery day at work for half a year, this is a breath of...ash....air
Really well done Carlos!
I’d always start it just after my lunch break and leave when the album ends haha
Absolutely beautiful, wow!! Your first 113 cover is what helped me find your channel all those years ago!
That's so cool, thank you for sticking around since those days!
@@insaneintherainmusic thanks for making great music all this time! I'm a pianist myself so it's been really cool to see you learn and grow over the years
For me it was the eterna forest cover, discovered that in summer 2017 and been here ever since
This route Tune always stands out to me. My first Shiny in Sapphire was a Spinda, so of course this song will always be special to me.
I always come here when my anxiety strikes me, route 113 itself its a peace point to me, walking through the ashes and finding spindas... the song makes me feel like home.
I'm sorry i haven't commented this earlier but your version its so nostalgic and ethereal it makes my mind calm down all of the weird thoughts and feel the falling ashes on route 113.
And this is what i really love about music, this capacity of healing and all the emotions it can have. Thank you so much for your excellent job and for uploading so many masterpieces.
Just a minute in and I must say, beautiful work. 1st thing to hear after waking up from a 5 hour flight, walking into a busy airport, definitely hits you in an emotional way. More so when the flight you took is away from home.
When I saw the length of the video, I thought "I do love this theme, but how is he going to elaborate around it for this long?". But as usual with you, it was no drag. It was a journey, and everything I didn't know I needed right then. Thank you.
Another Pokémon cover? This is super great, amazing job!
My childhood has just hit me like a truck listening to this cover
I was just listening to “The Descent” and thinking “I could use some more of Carlos’ piano” then I go to my notifications, see one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite video games (the first one I owned in fact) and I could not be more ecstatic
I am literally crying holy crap this is so good.
I'm not crying. No.
My old childhood friend gifted me his Emerald (Smaragd in German)
and I started playing, the first time enjoying Gen3 on the GBA, it was fantastic.
Sadly 1-2 months after giving me his game, he moved 500kilometres away. :((
I still have the game, will never sell it.
The perfect track to catch spindas to! Ty Carlos
I was excited for this when this popped up. The Skarmory route. The place that made everyone assume Skarmory was gen 3 because no one found it in Silver. I wasn't sure what to expect when the cover started but as it went on it got better and better with building up. I really liked it.
I remember finding this channel years ago for old Sunshine covers (Delfino Plaza, Ricco Harbor, etc). Seeing the growth from the already great talent has been a real pleasure - so happy to see the channel is alive and well to this day!
I'm not crying. Ash went into my eyes. You know how route 113 is!
Lot's of time spent on this route to get my glass made! Maxed out on Repels to avoid Spindas(btw one of my favorite double battle Pokemon). Feelin dynamically volcanic. I remember buying this game with my lunch money in my high school days finally getting backlit handheld devices.
Tunes to relax to when trying to complete an Emerald 2 Nuzlocke
NOT YOU COVERING MY FAVORITE GEN 3 SONG AFTER I STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN OVER SINNOHVATION
What a journey this track takes you on! Thank you for sharing, a privilege to get to hear that theme through your ears. EPIC 🔥
The buildup to the sax in particular was very impressive.
That piano really defines this piece, so effortless!
This perfectly encapsulates Pokemon Ruby for me, the track is so warm yet so mysterious. And of course it would be remiss of me not to mention the hopeful undertones that permeate throughout the track, a feeling that is key to the Pokemon franchise.
Wonderful!
That timing change around 3 minutes is slick AF!
First new vid with the new logo. Feels like the beginning of an era.
3:50 the jazz STANK FACE on bass Carlos is taken to new levels
I legit fell asleep to this. Crazy good
My favourite song of all time from the main series Pokemon games, this just made me so happy :)
I was literally just listening to your 2014 album when I got the Patreon notification! Reminiscing because I just helped my kid sister start a file on my old copy of Alpha Sapphire, who's now the same age I was when I first played Emerald 😭 Thank you Carlos for giving us a new soundtrack for our memories!
Actually one of my new favorites from you! Cool time signature and changes in tempo. You're a musical genius at work
I already praised this to hell and back in your Patreon chat (everyone join to hear these early!), but my god. Everything is so perfect in terms of structure, voicing, articulation and improvising.
9 minutes of a song from gen 3! This makes me so happy thank you for doing this. Hoenn will always be my favorite region, it feels like home :)
What an awesome Birthday surprise!!
If the Pokemon weather channel existed and used this, I'd tune in all the time
I have been waiting for this for so long!
do you feel that? that is the feeling of having heard a great song and having it change your life for the better just so you know.....
That's beautiful. Thank you for this.
ahhh yesss brings back fond memories of spinda massarces for the sake of EV training
My favorite route theme in Pokémon getting a beautiful Jazz cover? Of course I'd click the instant I see it!
This made my day, so thanks. It'll make hoarding ashes for furniture more not as daunting.
One of my favorite childhood songs. Absolutely incredible cover, thank you so much for doing this one!
This is my favorite song from all pokemon games.....amazing cover
This is so nice. Really love that you took your time with the piano and synth at the beginning for so long
Holy shit you’re right that route absolutely did give me an unhealthy idea of how cool it would be to walk around in falling ash. That shit’ll fuck your lungs up if you breathe it.
I think the recent summers of smoke here in the Pacific Northwest have really changed my perspective on that vision 😆
It was already my favourite route now its also my favourite Insaneintherain song!
Your cover works amazing well with the jazz genre. Takes me back when I played in my pre-teens and caught my first shiny, a Spinda.
Been a fan of you for years now, my sister listed on her gift wishlist your 3 disc Sinnoh musical collection for her birthday this year. I bought it and during our birthday, we both enjoyed listening while catching up and having life discussions.
Thanks for all that you do, your arrangements are incredible
LETS GO. Seeing an upload from Carlos just brightens the day for me automatically. Thanks for everything, and fantastic fuckin work on this one too.
It's heckin' gorgeous all the way through.
My man wasn't satisfied with one piano he can't be contained
an ABSOLUTE CLASSIC. got my head spinnin'
Your music always makes me cry. Thank you.
The first 2 minutes made me cry from nostalgia
Walked in expecting ash and soot, and you gave us fire 🔥
The entire song was absolutely phenomenal. That drum beat at 3:06 was so damn tasteful!
Yoooo best route in Hoenn. Thank you so much.
Insaneintherain must have the Ability "Serene Grace" because this calmed me down and was genuinely beautiful. Fantastic job, seriously great stuff. Been watching you for a few years on and off, you just keep improving and you were already an amazing musician before.
Well, ain't this a throwback. I found you way back when you first did your Gen 3 covers. Route 113 was my favorite theme ingame, so it's not surprising that Spinda's Lament low-key changed my life. I've gone far and done a lot since then, but the kid in me was right here in the soot storm the whole time, spinning in place.
You made the beginning sound like I’m in heaven
This is as if Route 113 was on Sinnoh and you're traveling at night. I love it so bad.
I remember sitting, playing Ruby, and coming to this route to sit and just listen and watch as the ash drifted down from Mt. Chimney. It's funny how memories work like that; I know I was always just staring at a GBA, but it feels like I really was sitting in the tall grass.
Route 113 is my favorite part of my favorite game, and I'm thrilled to hear you do it justice!
Found Carlos on accident about 4 years ago especially with his jazz video game medley series I’ve fallen in love with his music a truly amazing composer I’ll be here to stay he’s by far my favorite musician of all time he has so much talent
There isn't a lot of music I can see myself listening to with my eyes closed. I just don't get stimulated enough. The intro part before the drums come in though? I could listen to that forever. I could live there.
This whole rendition is fantastic.
As gorgeous as your sweeping orchestrations are, I'll always have a soft spot for your small band arrangements, and this is up there with the best of them!
I'm actually terrified to think of what you could make out of this soundtrack. GO EASY ON ME
I always liked how this song sounded kinda like snowman. Also just a nice song in general. Cool to see you do an updated cover of a classic!
I've been anxious for a Back to Your Littleroots Redux album ever since we got Sinnohvation, very excited to hear this!!
one of my fav underrated route themes that i hoped you would do omg
オリジナルよりも切なさが増しててすごくカッコ良い!
Carlos pfp change? YOOOOO. Time to grind those volcanic ash furinture items!!
I am a HUMAN NOW and no longer a white saxophone
@@insaneintherainmusic You have gained too much power. Limbs? You've gone mad I say!
@@yashchoksey9748 Insane, even.
Thank you so much for this, it inspired me a lot during my writing nights. Best version of this theme out there!
Let me say this again: YOU'RE KILLING IT. Thank you for this awesome adaptation and execution.
When I read the title I knew I was in for a treat, this is one of the best melodies and you brought so much to this tune I am amazed. Thanks for this piece
I've have no words. Your music is amazing!
Wow! This is just *chef kiss*. It's always wonderful to see you flex your piano chops, and this track (as I'm sure you know from experience) really allows a powerful space to do just that.
Truly, you've come a long way.
One of the best arrangements you've put out imo. Your drum playing really brought this to life more than anything else for me
I got chills right at the very first chord on the synth pad. LOVE the metric modulations and style changes!! You got the energetic yet chill balance just PERFECTLY! Just inspiring.
The faces and smiles you do when playing are proof about how much you love playing and you feel connected to the songs you perform. This is why your tracks touch people's souls so fondly.
Keep up the great work, man. You're just awesome.
Absolutely loved the drop
That opening pad is _warm_ .
