So happy to finally be doing this tune! I’ve played Rude Buster a few times at live shows since DELTARUNE came out, and I always prefaced the performance by saying that “this is the one tune in my set list that I haven’t uploaded a video of”, and now I can’t say that anymore! I loved a lot of the music from DELTARUNE, but was sort of hesitant on making full covers of it, since the full DELTARUNE game hasn’t been released yet… but I saw that enough of you wanted to hear this song that I got over myself and did this one, haha. I don’t think I need to express how much I like this song, considering I’ve enjoyed Toby Fox’s compositions enough to make a full album of UNDERTALE music!
For this particular arrangement, I was super excited to be able to use my upright bass in a featured role for some points in the tune! In the past couple of years, I’ve grown to be a fan of Japanese jazz fusion piano trios like H ZETTRIO or Fox Capture Plan that play stuff that sounds game music mixed with EDM, but orchestrated for a piano trio. In these ensembles, the upright bass always stands out to me, since it has such a unique round sound that’s accented by really percussive attacks on notes! That was a sound I was really going for here in the bass part, especially when the bass plays solo! I ended up rerecording the bass part a couple of times using different mics and positions to get the sound just right. In the end, I settled on using my new AT4040 condenser mic (looks like my good ol Bluebird bit the dust - it isn’t working anymore, so I had to buy a replacement!) to capture finger noise, and my AEA N8 right on the bridge to get the round low end, and ended up blending those mics together. Throughout the arrangement, there are a few times when I do this EDM riser kind of thing on the bass (which is possible because the bass is a fretless instrument!), which is a technique, I totally stole from GoGo Penguin’s tune “Garden Dog Barbecue”, which was also a major inspiration for this arrangement.
I also got a new set of congas recently! Playing with the Sinnoh Fusion Ensemble helped me realize how big of a role auxiliary percussion plays in making a sick groove, so I wanted to invest in some congas that I can use on future recordings to add an extra layer to the rhythm section! My conga technique is… not the best, but I’m working on it! I think the congas are very versatile and can utilized in a lot of different styles of music! 🙂
This arrangement has a fair few time changes in it, I just wanted to throw em in for fun! There’s also a section after the percussion trading solos that references “Field of Hopes and Dreams”, which is the central melodic motif in DELTARUNE… and I love the song so much (it’s my Animal Crossing town tune!) so I figured I’d throw it in, haha.

As someone below me said, the attitude of this arrangement is really strong. It makes the individual instruments stand out quite a bit, particularly the flute and piano.
I'm also SO happy you've started using the double bass! It's been one of my favorite instruments for a while, especially due to the rich deep tones it has(and just like the saxophone, I have yet to learn it....gotta change that...). It's going to sound incredible in the slower, bossa nova covers. I think the Consouls' bassist is a great example! Hopefully you're having as much fun with it as I think you are!

@@Liravin Deltarune is in kind of an alternate dimension of Undertale, and a good amount of Undertale characters are in Deltarune. The gameplay is also really similar.
@@Liravin There's some Undertale characters that make appearances but that's about it when it comes to it being related to Undertale story wise, it's basically like an alternative universe type deal where the game is its own separate world from Undertale.

@@Firefox-Udon Once you listen to enough music with 5/4, 7/8, or honestly any other odd time, you just get a feel for it. Counting it out isn't necessary once you can feel the odd times.
