Paul Maric's reviews are renowned for their unparalleled focus on rear car seat comfort, particularly in assessing knee room, setting a gold standard for comprehensive evaluations in the automotive industry.
I got driven home in my 4wd one Xmas day and the wheel arch sticking in my back as I sat in the back seat for a couple of hours really pissed me off. I’m happy to have some idea of rear seat comfort.
Paul, think it’s going to be a bit higher than $110k. Emailed my local Lexus dealer after watching your video. $2000 to go on the waitlist and he said: “Estimated Price bracket is around $140,000 to $180,000”. The email had some snips of a presentation in it, which also stated 3.5T towing.
I’ve watched a fair few reviews on the gx and this is now the best. Thank you for the quality of this review; it appears one take but you can clearly see the thought put behind it because it’s not a ramble.
Beautiful, Toyota/Lexus pulled it off even with the land cruiser I think it need a redesign. The defender is a good car, but I'd take this over the defender just because of Lexus reliability...
Really keen to see the Prado version reach Australia. Never in my life have I wanted a 4x4, but that next gen Prado in the "First Edition" yellow/white scheme, really does it for me.
Paul - query regarding LC250 in the US, my sources tell me customers can choose colour and model variants for their order in the US, however in Australia all we hear is ‘stay tuned’ - is that true? When would Toyota release pricing, specifications and eventually the car in Australia????
@CarExpertAus ah very cool! Thanks again for all your autonomy content! Question: which vehicle performed the absolute best in all of your autonomy tests? Thanks! Looking for a car with the best system for freeway driving/long roadtrips!
That engine sounds like a winner. Not so much its fuel economy. I wonder what various solutions will be available from the after-market industry to solve the range issue. The new Prado will have similar range issues, now that it will no longer have an OEM auxiliary fuel tank.
Is there any update on whether we will be getting the overtrail plus spec here in australia? it seems like a bit of a miss if they are trying to compete with JLR- defender
I agree with you totally. I’ve always been an off-roader and always focused on that but now I have a spine injury and I struggle with chronic pain and I can no longer tour outback as corrugations absolutely destroy me. I so badly want to buy this vehicle but realise that my off-roading days are over but living in the bush the overtrail seems to make the most sense because the 18inch wheels with tyres with the larger sidewalls would make Our rural roads much more pleasant on our crapppy roads but I’d also like the massaging seats etc but it would appear that I cant have both. Such a shame, not sure which way to go 🤷♂️ will have to test drive both a decide.
I love this car. Looking at the price and engine specs, I dare say the natural competition will be the 300 series and not the Prado. Maybe for cashed up soccer mums, it is a touch smaller than the 300 and will sell on that in city centres. Fuel economy will push me to the 300 if I had the money.
Hi Paul, as usual you give more good detail and a very nice walk around. I’m amazed at how you find the on road drive nice while the other Australian fellow called it competent but nothing more. Gives one a balanced view and interest for a test drive. I have watched the USA based reviews but they never really add up as specs are not similar.
Price isn’t bad considering v6 up against the Defender. Any idea why they don’t have a 3rd row option in the overtrail model given it’s the only option with the 4wd gear?
For the additional towing capacity and according to Lexus most customers that use their car for off-roading remove the third row (the GX has been on sale in the US for a number of generations).
If you tow a travel trailer using a weight distribution hitch, a body on frame vehicle makes more sense than a unibody style vehicle. You can use max/adequate weight distribution without fear of frame stress as opposed to concern about body stress on a unibody vehicle. That for me is why a BMW or Audi is not on my list of competitors. I also like Toyota/Lexus reputation for reliability.
Hi Paul, I'd love to hear your take on if it is worth moving away from petrol/diesel engines to electric and if the tech is there enough now. I'm looking to get a new car but I'm worried if I was to get a petrol/hybrid, are petrol cars are going to be declining very fast over the next 5 years(in price and fuel expense) Is it worth making the jump now?
Currently it’s electric cars that have accelerated depreciation. It really depends which segment you’re buying in - if you’re over landing or towing I wouldn’t go near an EV. If you have home charging and primarily drive around the city an EV will be more cost effective, but just factor in the depreciation.
I always watch the reviews on this channel for as long as I can stomach at 2x speed, the unmitigated waffle is simply too much to bear, and you can get any information required without wasting your time.
The back opening glass window in the tailgate always worries me that it’ll become a source of rattling at a later stage? I’ve never had that feature so just something I anticipate?
It’s a really good looking vehicle. As a Toyota fan I’ve been disappointed at the lack of options and inclusions when compared to the Europeans, Land Rover in particular, I hope this bridges the gap.
Toyota stuff is generally pretty reliable. 4 prado’s, zero issues except the diesel, was glad to see the arse end of that one, the other 3 were petrol with zero issues with anything and yes used off road and towing
That roof glass would be using battery power I assume. Not sure the volt usage but something to note. Is there no diesel? I thought it was going to have that?
Once you drive Full Size SUV like Navigator or Escalade you will never go back to those smaller SUVs. The cabin space is just incomparable, the rear legroom is not there in all of those mid-size SUVs like for example GX. But generally, the design of GX is amazing! Hardcore rigid SUV in a luxury package.
Neither of those are available in Australia. Also, the GX is far better off road. Escalades never leave the pavement. If you want full size, look at the LX, which is superior to either of the models you mentioned.
Paul, great review and impressive vehicle, my only concern is if it's only offered with a petrol motor here in Australia, there would be limitations on where it could go given that some areas in the Australian outback/desert only have diesel available?
That's not correct. I've been all over Australia, including some of the most remote parts, all on a motorcycle. Never once had a problem getting petrol. Even the outback stations have it. Consider that a motorcycle doesn't have the range of this vehicle either. The Patrol, Ranger Raptor, and many other vehicles are also petrol, and in the outback. My Prado is petrol as well. Definitely never an issue.
looks fantastic - just wish it was prices sub $100K luxury - petrol - Off-road wagon, it competes with Nissan Y62 Patrol which you can get for less money.
I think it’s great and at Aus$110,000 or UK£60,000 it is certainly competitive. The UK will probably get the LCruiser version and with the 2.8 200hp/500Nm diesel engine. Will probably cost at least as much as this Lexus due to our ridiculous CO2 fleet sales targets. They will not wish to sell many of them unless they add fines for exceeding CO2 into the basic price.
It’s coming with a better engine than both the 3.3L diesel and the 2.8L diesel. I don’t understand people who bias to a fuel type but ignore the torque and other performance of a power plant. Modern diesels are not the diesels of yester year.
@@Stevegrande1 Haha I'm the opposite. Had a V6 petrol 4x4 and now have a 2.8 diesel and am glad I did. Yeah the petrol had more power, but towing I hated it so much and was very thirsty.

Soooo keen for this. I saw the TFL review. Keen to see your review with the Aussie lens!
curiously the TFL video didnt had the same offroad course/setup to this! apparently the course toyota built got washed over by a flood!
I also saw the TFL review but like to see the impressions from different reviewers and markets.
Looks like you got the hard track. Nice. Great to see an Aussie perspective on the GX.
I bet it's more expensive than Paul said. Also, fuel economy will be bad, but if you can afford the car, you can afford the fuel.
V6 Twin Turbos are performing for fuel almost on par with V6 that Prados sport if I am not mistaken.
