Sometimes, base is best. And in the case of the Lexus GX, I actually think this *cheapest* grade makes the most sense, even if the Overtrail looks cooler. What do you think? -Tom
Thanks for another wonderful review of the GX, Tom! I do think the base model represents best value for the estimated price. However, i have a deposit on the sports luxury and one of the reasons is that Mark Levinson is only available in the top model. we have the music system in our ES hybrid and it is outstanding. Any idea, how much the sports luxury gx is going to cost. I think it would be around $150-170k on the road.
I’m with you Tom. I would love the seven seat option in the Overtrail. Need the extra seats for ferrying kids and their friends during weekdays, and the 4wd goodies for my weekends.
Overtrail looks good and tempting but for me would have to be compared to the LC300 GRS spec. Looks similar coin. I like the more compact size of the GX though.
Hey man to each their own. Disliked the interior at first but it’s starting to grow on me. It’s definitely better than the German alternatives. Keep it up!
The over trial will be a game changer, it will be head to head with the GR sport and for those who are over the inherit issues that come with modern diesels the high powered petrol engine will entice a fair few not to mention much better looking inside and out !
In America, we have a strange situation. Many Toyota dealers are adding addendums ($$$) to the MSRP and Lexus usually does not do this therefore, a base Lexus GX will be slightly more expensive than a base Toyota LandCruiser 250/Prado.
I didn’t think so. I ran the same curvy roads with both grades and the E-KDSS made only a very, very marginal difference if anything at all. Off-road is a different story where you really want E-KDS.
I love the GX so much, but I would go for the First Edition Prado that may be priced similar to the base GX, would love the extra power but will settle for the top specs in the First Edition. Besides, the 2.8 appears to be reliable
@@maribogukun depends on your needs and wants, the RX is a nice smaller compact suv the GX is bigger fitting up to 7 but with more outdoor capabilities with luxury accommodations
Unfortunately, many luxury car manufacturers are going/gone that way. Mercedes-Benz have been optioning vinyl covered seats in their vehicles for decades. They call theirs "MB Tech", if I'm not mistaken. Buyers simply assume it's leather because it's a luxury car. I believe BMW & Audi have done the same thing on some of their lower-end models. But funny that not a single one of them call it "vinyl". They all have fancy name for it. There is also an ever increasing buying demographics which bans all animal products in vehicles they buy - like genuine leather. And these manufacturers want to cater to these groups too (and lower cost at the same time).
I'm seriously considering the GX. But it all depends on how much of a premium it is over the equivalent Prado. If I go the GX route, it will have to be the Overtrail. And will compare it to the Prado version (ie. GR Sport). And if the extra is negligible, then I'll seriously consider the GX. Otherwise, sayonara GX.
I can get over many of the changes they made for this version of GX; however the two biggest let downs are them not including EKDSS or the legacy KDSS on every trim level, they are only making it available on the overtrail which without this the truck doesn’t ride as nice and has a lot of roll. Which is why he is saying you have to take your time around corners because they removed KDSS lol hop in a gx460 then the 550 you will notice the difference almost immediately. Second thing is the gas tank why is it so small; with it being so small and having poor gas mileage, I’m confused why they left the v8. Would’ve been nice to have a 3rd row as an option for the overtrail but hey….
Mate love your reviews. if - only if Lexus offers an enhancement pack for the base model with Mark Levison audio system; not going to happen... based on what we know about Toyota - they might consider bringing it on in 2-3-4 years - only IF they have to stimulte sales volumes (with current demand on GX/LX... no way) & that would be only available on mid trim or above models i bet.
I'm considering this vehicle, not a fan of the Panasonic stereo considering the price point. As I'm slim in frame I will be interested to test drive once we have them in Australia to see how troublesome the seats will be being made for a wider framed person. The main reason for not considering the Prado is the 4 cylinder turbo diesel. For such a large vehicle it needs more power, especially if people plan on towing boats & caravans. Lets face it if you own these types of vehicles chances are high that is why you are purchasing. @chasingcars would a 2024 Nissan Patrol be a good alternative if seats prove bothersome?
Defender will be MUCH nicer to drive. I had one. Trouble is the dealers and the small issues the LandRover will eventually have. Could be any time the LandRover will be troublesome. Sold mine after 5 weeks of small issues from the factory that LandRover didnt want to sort out. I have the GX550 on order!
Thanks Tom, I have a sports luxury on order, decision process was based on the only grade with the mark levinson sound system, leather and ambient lighting..I still have a ? in ride fron the 22 inch rims, however I figure if the ride is a bit choppy, I should be able to go back to the 20 inch rims...see how we go Delivery should be November, I am told this model spec should start arriving October
We actualy need a petrol hybid as I don't see any benefits in using a diesel hybrid - unless I'm missing something really obvious. The new LC250 (Prado) with the 2.8 hybrid diesel has exactly the same power output as the non hybrid engine with only a slight improvement in fuel economy. The hybrid adds more grunt at lower revs which is a good thing with petrol engines but overlaps with what diesels do best by nature.
Thank you so much for reviewing the base model always like your reviews at this price point in the US looking at this GX or Genesis GV 80. Thoughts on which one?..as a daily driver, wanting luxury and space
What trim does the Overtrail have. Is it leather. And are the front seat comfy, as the 2023 110 Defender I have is not, they are very hard on your bottom and lower back.
The most annoying thing about Toyota/Lexus is the hump in the floor. They can't seem to engineer around it like everybody else. Also kind of annoying that the Overtrail only has two rows. Yeah, I understand the preference by off-roaders, but we all know most of these vehicles won't do any real off-roading. Even less of them going through custom off-road builds, as most people aren't going to take a vehicle of that price off the lot and modify it. Just give the Overtrail an optional 3rd row that can be removed by the owner when needed.
Not so sure. I can't see one 300 series on car sales under 100k! Defender is still the same, nothing cheap. I think this is going to hold it's value very well unless it's got 100,000klms or more then you might see some deals.
Amazing vehicle except for the dismal 12mpg city consumption. These will sit on car lots for decades. Its 2024, if we cant get over 30mpg, its a beautiful, expensive gas station parking lot.
I've had a GX for 18 years - loved it, BUT this new model is the ugliest thing I've ever seen. If I want a jeep, I'll buy one. No longer interested. Very disappointed.

Well balanced as in it's not a 90 degree V? Hope it's a much nicer engine than the new diesel in the 300.
Great review Tom!
Is the fuel capacity 80L?
Prado drivers like myself thinking about upgrading will dislike having to stop for fuel so often.

Only if it's petrol and not a diesel hybrid as they don't make sense.
Word from the inside is it will be a diesel hybrid, and they will be here earlier than originally planned. Likely mid next year.

Lovely but I couldn’t buy thirsty petrol in 2024 ….and for touring Australia diesel is preferable
Wait, the trims are different in Australia? It's premium, premium+, overtrail, overtrail+, luxury, luxury+ in the US.
Yes, the trims are different here as described.
Does the cruise control go under 40kph or does it cut out like the one in the prado and the land cruisers
Really nice but $110,000 for a vehicle with vinyl trim? Drinks too much fuel and the fuel tank is far too small too.
