I went on a trip in the summer of 2023 to Tokyo and we were deciding if we should visit Yokohama. While I wanted to see the life sized RX-78, I didn’t want to lose a day in Tokyo to go to Yokohama, and I figured it would be there for the next trip to Japan. That’s when they first announced it was being taken down that March, and I was so upset, feeling like I had missed my chance to see it. When I saw it got extended I immediately decided we’d be going to Yokohama, and luckily we got to see it before it’s gone. I feel extremely lucky now, and I’ll always cherish that memory.
Pilgrimage is the best way to describe it. Being able to see a life sized RX-78, was a dream come true, and to see it moving was too incredible believe.
I understand completely why they might want to take it down. But it's kinda heartbreaking really. Put aside the fact that it's based on an anime we all love. This is truly a masterpiece of engineering and building in general. The world can look pretty grim most the time and I often think about how dull certain landmarks look and how eerie things like the giant sea puppets look and ancient statues. But here in Japan for a time stood this incredible brightly clad beacon of love and celebration for a Mech that captured the heart and imagination of so many of us for year's. I can't comprehend what an absolute joy it would have been for the engineers who grew up watching the show to get to work on this. And for us gunpla fans who devote hours to building the kits to see The closest thing to a real Gundam standing proud on that Dock is just incredible. I never got to see it in person and that saddens me but photos and videos of the thing and an entry in the GBOWR is still an absolute punch the air moment for this guy from the UK. My only wish is that they find a place for this beautiful machine to stay instead of it being dismantled and thrown in crates to rust. My dad told me about the joy of seeing Christopher Reeves taking flight as Superman when he was younger and what a profound experience seeing that movie for the first time was. I told him that's how I felt seeing The Gundam the first time. Alot of money these days is spent on developing equipment for profit and advancements to our lives and that's a good thing. While the Gundam was constructed probably with money in mind it also felt like it was just built for love and appreciation. I think that says a lot about Japan as a country and it's people ❤
I appreciate this video. I wasn't able to see the Gundam in person, and I don't think I can before it closes, so watching this was really cool. Hopefully for the 50th anniversary they do something like this again
We went there this past January and it was really bittersweet. On one hand the movement might seem unimpressive because it's rather slow (which is obviously understandable) but on the other, once you immerse yourself with the display, the atmosphere, and the amount of technical prowess it took to actually execute everything, it's pretty incredible. It was pretty awe-inspiring but also really sad that it's finally going away and my wife and I are so glad we made it before then. Also the there's a note there from I think Yoshiyuki Tomino himself that's really wholesome. He mentioned that however simple the moving gundam is right now is due to so many technical hurdles that our current tech cannot handle, and that he's hopeful that future generations will eventually make a better gundam.
@@RumblesBettrI mean hey, Tomino did also say that if you want to see a better moving gundam, maybe you can try understanding the problems they faced and come up with a better solution.
@@ascensionindustries9631 i don't think we really have the technology to get a mobile powersource strong enough to move the gundam, nor have strong enough materials to withstand the G forces of moving something with that much mass "quickly" without it falling apart
I visited the F00 Gundam last month for the first and last time, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. I went with some friends and we went in expecting a show, but we happened to be there just in time for the Gundam Awakening show where Amuro's spirit appears inside the Gundam's AI. None of us expected it and I think it'll be a memory that lives in my head forever. I also had to get the 1/144 F00 Gundam & G-Docks kit after that. I'll miss that Gundam, but the experience was worth it.
When I saw it in January I was blown away with how clean and new it looked despite being outside exposed to the elements for five years. All in all I was blown away with the statue and it made the entire trip worth it alone.
Thanks for the shots of Sakuragicho. I used to live in Yokohama and it's very nostalgic. I'm glad it hasn't changed. I loved walking by the water and seeing the fish jump out.
I wish I could have seen it and I feel a little sad I wouldn't be able to experience all that, but from a financial standpoint, I get it. I can only imagine the cost of operations and the monthly maintenance bills. It would be difficult to break even. Goodbye, rx78. Rest well.
I am inspired by the video and will go to the factory for the first time in march. Kudos to you I really feel your love for gundam and am willing to go experience it too.
SO glad I got into this franchise when I did. With WfM last year I made the journey to see the Rx78 at gundam factory and Unicorn at Diver City while on my trip in spring. I feel so fortunate to have been able to see it before it's gone. While it's not doing backflips, the atmosphere from the music and voice lines made it feel so special. Now a life goal to see the other 1/1's!
Thank you so much for this video. As a fan of Gundam for more than 2 decades, I haven't been able to visit Japan to see any of the statues so it's sad to hear them closing one after the other but you did a great job documenting the experience.
I'm going to japan for the first time this march and im so glad i going to get the chance to see the moving gundam (as well as the other 2 life sized ones) even if i was a dumbdumb and bought 2 tickets for the wrong date and then another 2 tickets for the correct date costing me ~20000 Yen (2 ppl) for visiting the giant gundam and climbing the scaffolding for it.
I was happy I was able to visit it in summer of 2023. The guide was super nice and we were the first group to go on the platform. So that meant we had a few extra minutes for our self. It was an unforgettable experience. When the main show started we were at the highest platform, while I didn't understand Japanese the whole experience and music made me cry. Here I was a 30 year old feeling overwhelmed by everything and seeing a gundam move for real. I hope the do something like this again in the future. For all gundam fans to enjoy.
I went there October 2023 and oh boi it is a joyride and a dream come true as huge Gundam fans. Seeing this again made me tear up. Sad that it is going to be closed for good. Glad that I was able to watch and look at it closely before it shuts down for good and I will cherish this experience forever in my heart.
So glad I went in early 2023. Gonna miss it. I do love the messages from Tomino apologizing that you came all the way here and it's not moving on it's own and other mech show creators saying that giant mechs in real life are preposterous and awesome at the same time.
Because of GFY, i fell in love the city of Yokohama and i explore more Yokohama and i visit also Tokyo especially in odaiba where Gundam Base Tokyo and RX-0 Unicorn Gundam Ver. TWC is located
I went here on Christmas Eve 2022; my study abroad uni had told me I needed to get out within 48 hours on the 22nd, and my flight wasn't until the 25th. I decided while I was waiting for my return home, and as a Christmas present for myself, that I might as well go to Yokohama. The day was clear and warm for a December, and I remember the place still being pretty crowded as the salt from Tokyo Bay gave everything a little scent of the ocean. This, plus managing to go to the Odaiba Gundam Base where the Unicorn is, still stick out to me over a year later. It was the one day in Japan I decided to do things that I wanted to do, with no one and nothing holding me back. At the time, having to leave the country so suddenly made the emotions dull, but now that whole day and reaching a place I thought I'd never get to fills my heart with a gentle warmth of nostalgia. I'm working on returning one day, but it's sad to hear that one of the two giants I met will no longer be there.
I finally got to go for the first and last Time last month during my first trip to Japan, it was amazing seeing it and all of the people there that came from all over the globe to see the Gundam
While I am sad I won't be able to see this masterpiece with my own eyes seeing this video was really cool. Many thanks for you spending the extra cash so fans like myself while not being able to see the White Devil first had we still get to a birds eye view of it without the added death attached to it. I've been a Gundam fan sense it first air on Toonami when I wss a kid so seeing a sight like this really makes me feel like a kid again.
I am just not getting into gundam and gunpla, this was going to be #1 on my bucket list for once I graduate high schools, how I will never be able to see if unfortunately, however I’ll still forever collect gunpla and watch your channel 👍
I happily visited this beautiful location on my last trip. honestly sad to see it being torn down but at the same time I cannot wait to see what they build in it's place. Hopefully some new gundam movements
Hey, i actually scheduled a trip from the farthest place in south america to japan based around this guy closing. I just got back from there and even though id been to the country twice before, going not only to yokohama but also fukuoka and daiba for the holy trinity of life size gundams before the f00 was gone was magical. Truly sad that it'll be gone in a month.
My last trip was in late January, and I shelled out and got all the themed stuff I could afford, like the bottles, cups, and tags. As you said, the exclusive kits were mostly gone, so I sourced my 1/100 somewhere else. I'm not going to be able to visit it anymore, and I'm devastated, but I'm still honoured I got to see this marvel of engineering in person.
Managed to visit Gundam Factory and all the other Gundam statues (Odaiba and Fukuoka) during my December trip last year. Considering that my next trip to Japan probably will not be until 2027...I am so glad I did that trip.
Went there last year, and the best photo I got was... Our boi making a "I'll get a, erm..." curl fingers having no idea what to buy shot. (thinking of that burger bright was having I guess?) And given I didn't get to go to the cafe, seeing what is offered here, this filled that bit of gap that I missed out. Thanks! Still feels a tiny bit of a tourist trap imo. I hope that tastes good at least. That robot assembly line when I was there actually tripped up and drop the mini RX-78 it was assembling. Everyone, even the staff there had a chuckle while it was being reset. The servo motors used in it's construction was mind-boggling huge. The whole thing is an engineering marvel in and of itself, with or without the gundam. Not everyday you see a animatronic the size of a building moving.
i went to Gundam Factory last October. thankful that i decided to just go for it without the knowledge that it will be closed in March. even bought the extra ticket to go up and observe gramps from up close. had ice cream while having the best seat facing gramps afterwards. walked home with 2 gunplas as well
Saw it once when I lived in Tokyo about 2 years ago. The food was mediocre but getting a good view from the top hanger was worth it. Picked up some merch as well. A shame they have to tear this down. A LOT of hard work went into building that.
When I went this past August, the "food trucks" mostly just had bottled drinks if I recall, I bought some because it was about a ~3 hour wait for my chance to go up on the Gundam dock, and it was incredibly hot. Also ate at the cafe, though I don't remember now what was on offer, did spend way too much on the shop below (Shirt, 1/48 gunpla, the Metal Build). One thing I was surprised by was that they stopped handing people models since I went. Back then, they were still giving people a model, but it was a lower than entry grade in black recycled plastic. Must have stopped since they were closing and didn't see the point in having any after the close date.
I went there earlier this year, sadly it was the 1st day of the year, which happened to be the day earthquake struck, I was on the tower when it happen, it was shaking slightly but the saddest part was that the show was canceled, I didn't get the full show while I was on the tower, but other than that it was pretty chill, I did took a lot of pictures like you said lol
I honestly didn't know you lived in Japan. So jealous. Though I did live in Japan myself when I was a baby/very young child. 82-86. My dad was in the Air Force at the time, and that is how we got there. I hope to one day go back there at least once.
My Robotics Engineer arse couldn't see this masterpiece while it lasted... Barely second semester, wanted to go to witness this in person and now I'm dying without ever experienced it.😢
Thank you for this wonderful video!!! I will never get a chance to see this live due to time. But I can live through you. Also huge fan of the channel. Been following for a long time.
Great video! And let me just say, I don't care what the general consensus among the western fanbase is: Gundam Seed is great and it cemented my enjoyment of the franchise as a whole. So it was nice to hear the Seed soundtrack in the video!
during my 2 weeks vacation in japan i went on the 10th of february with my friend familly to see the moving gundam, i was able to see 2 shows, the testing show with music and the second one up there close to the gundam with Amuro ray possesing the gundam. I wanted to see the gundam at this time before it leave but also it is a day before wonderfest 2024 on the 11th. I gotten a bottle of the place and a model kit also thought i iwsh i could order a sd version of the moving gundam
Went to Japan last November and half the reason I was so motivated to go was because I knew they had plans to take it down this year. Still surprised they aren't making it permanent but hopefully it's not the end.
I got to go last year, and the merch and food definitely felt more exclusive back then. Don't forget to tell people that the regular shows have official translations online! The story is about the F00's test pilot being haunted by the AI ghost of Amuro. Btw, the food stalls beside the dock had alcohol and some snackfare, like those twisty potato things.
I was there last May to see the gundam in person, too! my one regret being not going up onto the viewing tower. which, in hindsight, was the right choice, because it was CONSTANTLY raining when I was there...AND I left my jacket back home in Singapore, so my ass was freezing, especially in the rain...also, the only viewing I could get was for the evening, and we had other stuff to do, so.....yeah. And yeah, I was surprised by the zip lock bag for the pudding cup too. I went with family, and they thought it was for the nori(I got a Haro one). I had to go up to the counter to ask them to prove a point. TBF, that cup seems to be more of a souvenir kind of deal, and they probably arranged it to be that way for storage purposes.(because it's probably easier to just let them take it home, than have to waste some staff's time to collect it back from the return station and wash it...and make people running off with it a non-issue(because they fully expected that kind of stuff to happen, even with locals).
I went on december 2023 and oh boy one of the best experiences if not the best experience in my first trip to japan. I was amazed by the real size of the gundam, my girldfriend took lots of photos for me and we were chilling until night time she told me she got the tickets for us to the platform and I couldn't believe it. Before taking the line to enter she gave me my engagement watch. Truly an unforgettable experience. Days before I i gave her her engagement ring on Sanrio Puroland... What a great travel. 😊 Kinda sad that they'll be taking the real size gundam away... I wanted to go sometime again...
Wow. I didn’t realize they were going to be closing it down next month. I actually went there today and felt the same way about the store there. Completely underwhelming. Still glad I saw the life size RX-78.
I’ll be going next month! So excited to see it before it closes 😢 but I am disappointed to know that alot of the gundam base exclusive gunpla is not available anymore there. Oh well, maybe I can get some at Diver City.
the amount of money they make on plastic markup must be pretty profound if they built something like that as a temporary installment. like, not even 10 years!? thats absurd!
I'm gonna see it on the very last day its open. Fingers crossed I get a ticket from the lottery for the sendoff event too, so I can hear tomino himself give a speech
As impressive as it is to see, I can't imagine how painful it is to maintain it. It is closed every Tuesday JST. I think that might be why it has a limited lifespan as opposed to the others.
I'm a bit bitter about them taking it down already. It's not the first time as the original life-size was also taken down originally, but it seems so short, and they put even more work in it. I wonder if the maintenance (and space rental?) and other recurring costs are so high they fear starting to lose money. Last time I went to Japan was just before COVID and going back to see it was definitely on the list. Sadly life is sometimes a b... Well you know the saying I guess. Enough that not seeing it seems irrelevant now, but I still hope they can cook something else Gundam related for my future trip.
Do to unfortunate circumstances. I had to cancel my trip to Japan. And I was going to go on March 15. I really wanted to see this in real life. Oh well, guess some things are not ment to be.😅
This video definitely wasn't delayed by copyright and rendering issues.
I haven't had tanghulu for years. Normally it's hawthorn with or without fillings.
Bandai made tons of money selling Tamsshii sets. Some preorders lasted for minutes or even seconds.
I can’t believe they’ll be taking it down, such an impressive animatronic and beloved by Gundam fans
consuming too much energy i guess
.....and it coincides with japan's military budget increase before the gundam is decommissioned.
Not like they could keep it up since maintaining a walking giant robot isn't exactly cheap.

Barely second semester, wanted to go to witness this in person and now I'm dying without ever experienced it.😢
pro tip: the gundam mobile ensemble the color of the ball depicts the gundam/gear set like for example: stark jegan ball is blue 'yes this is true'
😢My heart gose out to gundam factory. Rx78 is awesome, only if u could drive the rx, but amuro ray can. Go Gundam. Keep up the amazing videos Kakarot😊
Thank you for this wonderful video!!!
I will never get a chance to see this live due to time.
But I can live through you.
Also huge fan of the channel. Been following for a long time.
One of the reasons I am visiting Japan next month before it closes.
Great video! And let me just say, I don't care what the general consensus among the western fanbase is: Gundam Seed is great and it cemented my enjoyment of the franchise as a whole. So it was nice to hear the Seed soundtrack in the video!
Thanks for sharing your visit to Gundam Places in Japan :D
during my 2 weeks vacation in japan i went on the 10th of february with my friend familly to see the moving gundam, i was able to see 2 shows, the testing show with music and the second one up there close to the gundam with Amuro ray possesing the gundam.
I wanted to see the gundam at this time before it leave but also it is a day before wonderfest 2024 on the 11th. I gotten a bottle of the place and a model kit also thought i iwsh i could order a sd version of the moving gundam
Almost close to hijack a gundam while on top view. 😆
Went to Japan last November and half the reason I was so motivated to go was because I knew they had plans to take it down this year. Still surprised they aren't making it permanent but hopefully it's not the end.
Glad to see my bucket list forming more permanent goals that will never be met
Im so happy i was able to visit it last summer!
Thanks, I almost saw it last year but ran out of time. Unfortunately can’t go before it closes. Hopefully something else in the future.
im glad you went so that we could watch it
I was there last May to see the gundam in person, too! my one regret being not going up onto the viewing tower. which, in hindsight, was the right choice, because it was CONSTANTLY raining when I was there...AND I left my jacket back home in Singapore, so my ass was freezing, especially in the rain...also, the only viewing I could get was for the evening, and we had other stuff to do, so.....yeah.
Thanks for sharing and documenting your experience.May I get a chance to visit Japan one day with a similar experience
I just made my last visit today. Unfortunately, like my first visit last year, it was under rainy and cold conditions.
Kinda sad that they'll be taking the real size gundam away... I wanted to go sometime again...
Damn, I didn't know they expected to close the exhibition so soon after doing a whole video series on creating it on GundamInfo.
Awww, and I was looking forward to seeing it this April. Dang shame.
i really wished i could of gone to see it before it was taken down. hopefully fully moving gundams will come back again in the near future
nooo, i wanted to stop by in july this year.
oh well, i'll just spend a day with unicorn instead.. unless they want to take that down too
I'm there next week. Wish i'd booked a later slot. To see it in the dark looks amazing
Too bad I will miss the moving Gundam in my life, no thanks to my freaking shitty luck last year.
Ziplock bag to put the used glass in is kinda wild ngl 😂
When I went to the Akihabara Gundam Cafe I had the char's special tomato pasta with two long toasted bread as launching pads.....😅
9:50 "...burgers do still play a role in Gundam."
*shows Bright eating a burger*
*should have shown burgers from War in the Pocket*
And here I thought I might be able to visit it after my graduation
I saw it in November and i’ll never forget it 😭
I so wish I'd been able to see the life size Gundam in person. It looks so impressive.
It's not the end, it's the beginning, there will be another.
They also said the same thing in F91, but alas.
I never got a chance to visit this. I'm so sad
Truly a memorable video
the amount of money they make on plastic markup must be pretty profound if they built something like that as a temporary installment. like, not even 10 years!? thats absurd!
I was there last May 2023....unfortunately at that time they closed down the place for maintenance....
I'm still sad that when i went to see it last year. It was closed that week for maintenance.
9:50 no joke was expecting a picture of bernie there.
Kakarot197 is the sidequest master.
When I first saw this I thought it was fake but when I saw this actual video I new that this masterpiece was real
One of the Coolest thing Japan Has and they are taking it down
i probably wont ever see it in person but this will suffice
They shouldn't take it down now, as this year marks the 45th anniversary of the Gundam franchise!
Now I want that zaku glass cup!
That's no Zaku, Boy, NO ZAKU!
Maaaaaan. This makes me want to go there one more time 😭
Lucky i decided to go last year in japan for the 1st time. Manage to see it and the unicorn
While it is sad to see it go i doubt that it will be gone forever
I was Hoping to see this Before I get Too old.
Do to unfortunate circumstances. I had to cancel my trip to Japan. And I was going to go on March 15. I really wanted to see this in real life. Oh well, guess some things are not ment to be.😅
