Yes! Your timing could not have been more perfect--I love the Greek Fire video and have shown it to my classes the last couple of years, and they enjoy it. I'm covering the Medieval period right now and will be talking about weapons next week! I am so stoked to show them this! Thanks!
I love this video but as a historian I have to bring up that the longbow was not really used by formal Medieval military units until the Battle of Falkirk under Edward I, about 80 years after the Siege of Toulouse. Longbows were so devastating in the hands of the English that they in fact replaced Crossbows in the English armaments by the time of the Hundred Year's War, not the other way around. I highly recommend the work of the leading expert on Longbows, Clifford J. Rogers, to see just how game-changing the true longbow was in the development of English warfare. Not only was it significantly different and more powerful than the bows described in the early 13th century discussed in this video, but it also was so impactful that the English used them until the advent of the firearm in the mid-15th century. For the resident longbow expert, see Rogers, Clifford J. “The Efficacy of the Medieval Longbow: A Reply to Kelly DeVries,” War in History 5, no. 2 (1998), 233-42. For the armament records, see Dan Spencer’s “The Armaments of Dover Castle, 1320-1437,” Journal of Medieval Military History: Volume XXII, edited by Kelly DeVries, John France, and Clifford J. Rogers, 113-42.
This was awesome! love the graphics. Great job! honestly i am almost preferring this channel to the tierzoo videos. which is weird cause i freaking love that channel! you do great work
They were great for that specific meta. Mercenaries and militiamen were plentiful in medieval times, so a weapon that didn't requiere a lot of training were OP at the time
I will add that the way full plate armor hampers mobility is mostly through the stamina cost it takes just to wear the thing, let alone with the visor down on an active battlefield. properly fitted plate armor had minimal effect on dextrous factors like range of motion.
Hey TierZoo why didnt you mention this second channel from your main channel? I'm sure lost of people would enjoy this. Not only the style and how you describe things like a video game very entertaining, but this amount of quality is something to he applauded
It's neat but I do prefer the more runescape aesthetics and I don't know what happened to your mic in the first minute as there's a bunch of static there but I hope to see more of these videos more extensively in the future!
1:51 Crossbows depending on the quality and maintenance does have longer "Effective" range, crossbow bolts smaller size actually makes it lighter on the flight, reducing air drag than arrows. 2:35 The Medieval Era armor mostly focused on the Chainmail and half plate/Brigandine, while Plate will came into play, arrows are still important to pin the enemy in place as while the great helm chainmail wearing knight with shields are harder to kill, they will advance slowly under the hail of arrows. at Close-medium range Crossbows does have more piercing, though it still depend on the quality as crossbows that can be reloaded with one hand cannot deal more damage as crossbows that requires 2 hands to reload, the Cranequin assisted Crossbow are by far the strongest since you literally need a mechanism to just pull the string into place due to how heavy the limb strength is. 4:50 While it's true that Crossbows are more expensive as even a joke of A getting a Crossbow man is far cheaper than getting a Crossbow, training and discipline is still needed, especially in maintenance as Crossbows main strength is in it's limbs and most Crossbow Manuals urge even the Peasant Militia to only ready the string unless the crossbow will be used to shoot. Basically the Longbowmen have the advantage of being well trained so the ones you get while not numerous are skilled at using and maintaining their weapons. Crossbows on the other hand requires some investment in materials and Workshops producing the Weapon, however the range of personel who can use Crossbows are wider than Longbows, so an unarmored Peasant Militia to experienced Brigantine armored Mercenaries can wield Crossbows. A bit of a tip for the Gunpowder video, make sure you get the Mechanism and Firearm type right, the 13th Century Hand Cannon would be extremely different than the 15th century Matchlock Arquebus and 17th Century Matchlock Muskets, not all Pre-WW1 Firearms are Flintlock Muskets.
Idk if its just me but the music is a bit too loud. Makes it a little hard to hear the V/O, just saying cause I want this channel to pop off like TierZoo
I would like to have some comments about your video: 1: Longbow still can pierce armor like crossbow, as the mission "Battle of Crécy", English clan longbowmen took the high position and they outplayed the full amoured knights of French clan as their arrows pierced through the armor of French calvaries as well. 2: Longbow requires longer time than crossbow indeed, but longbow was used also as a type of hunting weapon, so call for an army of longbowmen who already specialized in this weapons was not that hard, yet it stil required a signifficant EXP to master. 3: Crossbow has several moddify patches to improve loading rate and power, while longbow kept its simple shape time by time with no slot for improvement, this is why crossbow was so popular. 4: Also thanks for the upgrade patches and support attachments, crossbow actually can be reloaded faster. And longbowman although have hinger fire rate, they also out of arrows pretty fast, so most of longbowmen wouldn't fire at their maximun speed, so the fire rate in combat of these 2 weapons were somehow equal. 5: The role of crossbowmen and longbowmen in gameplay depend on what the clan want to perform: Longbow use for harash enemy economic units and stand by military unit in large scale while crossbow can use for close - medium range battle and one-shot-kill. Anyway, great video, just something I found and hope that the next video will be longer and more information.
This is some of the coolest shit Id be super interested in a making of vid at some point as this is ludicrously good looking but I have ZERO idea of how much of this is from scratch or what tools were used
You're mentioning plate armour but the siege in question is from a time before medieval plate armour. Crossbows do not penetrate plate armour. Todd, from Todd's Workshop, has a series on that.
Does this video lack an outro so that people don’t stop playing before the end and you get a debuff from the algorithm? (Came here from your Twitter account, where you mentioned the algorithm)
crossbows would be a good tech to bring into battle during the medieval age, but the high strength stat needed to draw it makes it unviable for most ranger classes. and the stronger classes spec'd their stats for frontlining with a sword.
We're so back
so Barack
Finally

Welcome back!!!
Holy crap I recognized the voice and immediately checked. Tierzoo!!

longbows were giga OP for sure. It's just the issue of training the archers that made crossbows viable for militias

Oh YEAH, you already know the 🔔 is rung
Depends on the situation but generally yes
I like the Brown Bess more.
