The Golf Mk V is to this day my favourite iteration of the Golf. The shape, the interior, the noise, it's peak Volkswagen. I also loved the truly, deeply deranged Golf W12 they made.

Henry never fails with his informative, and enjoyable presentation. I too think that the Mk5 is the best GTI - brilliant build quality and fantastic chassis. I had one for 9.5 years ( don’t ask why I sold it!) but now I have a mk7.5 GTi performance dsg. I would have liked to seen an edition 35 (mk6) in there. Perhaps a feature length video review of all of the GTi inc the editions- Ed 25,30,35,40,45.

I 2nd doing AE GTIs. I had the 25 AE that was sold in North America as the 337. It was a lightweight Reflex Silver GTI with recaros, red stitching, 18 inch BBS RCs a 6 speed manual, body kit and single exhaust tip out the back. Other markets offered different colors.
You hardly ever see them in these type of comparisons.

My experience living with my MkIV GTI for 12 years was it was a wonderful car for nearly every life situation, the precision while driving was lacking but when I went through the car around the 7-8 year mark and refreshed shocks and bushings and stuff, I went a step stiffer on engine mounts, subframe mounts, and suspension bushings and it just unlocked the potential of the car. The chassis rigidity and suspension geometry are inherently built in the car. The lack of precision just came from their choice of rubber being more comfort-focused. They're getting old now but the MkIVs were definitely higher quality in terms of interior and monocoque than competitors and even the MkV in a lot of ways.

Super geek question: I always thought the MK5 GTI had the older EA113 engine? When did it get the EA888?

I had a MkIV VR6 manual and thoroughly enjoyed that car. Overall, we've had three GTIs (MkIV, MkVI, and MkVII) and the MkIV usually gets overlooked in these kinds of retrospective videos. I, however, thought the VR6 powertrain paired with a manual transmission was a total riot to drive. Unlike our MkVI, the MkIV VR6 was super-reliable.

My first car was a MKIII as well! A 1994 GL with the 2.0 ABA engine. I think it was 90HP new? By the time I got it in 2002 who knows… But I loved that thing.
I have a MKVII R now. It’s amazing how clear the lineage to the MKV is, especially the interior (and the fact that you’ll curb the rims if you even look at a sidewalk). But if I had to replace it I can’t think of anything I’d get besides another one.

  • @Trendyflute
    @Trendyflute 2 роки тому +2

Sorry to be a Golf pedant but while driving the MkV you say it's the birth of the EA888 engine; it's actually the EA113 in the MkV and most of the MkVI cars, the EA888 came out more like late MkVI-early-MkVII time. Both 2.0 liter turbos with the same bore and stroke but different block materials and compression ratios, etc., etc. And for the sake of completeness it's worth pointing out that EA113 and EA888 are both engine families that encompass the 1.4s, 1.6s, 1.8s, and even three cylinders. EA888 has become shorthand for the GTI's 2.0 liter turbo but it's more complicated than all that. Cheers for the wonderful video and collection of cars!

VW seems to be doing the same things with the GTi badging as BMW has done with the M3. They keep bringing out so many variations. Then the R took over top spot...Make the GTi the sporty model with a club sport model above it. Sell the basic version as a sport or something. And keep some distinctive look from the normal model. Many years ago I owned two different 16V Jetta sedans (1988 and 1990) with the GTi 4 light grill added. They were enjoyable to drive without the risk of losing your licence. But the game has moved on.

A bit disappointed with Henry quoting max torque numbers like they seemingly matter for performance. I would think he would be more knowledgeable about that stuff with his long experience. This old myth needs to be put to rest already.
Ah well, not everyone can be really into the performance technicals, just because they like cars.
My favorite is the "edition 30" mk5 GTI, but this one looks pretty good.

so a few stickers, a red piece of trim around an ugly (subjective) rim and a different but the same sounding exhaust constitutes a ‘special edition’.
The motoring industry certainly understands the stupidity of the buying public and takes full advantage of same.

Love the channel and your work. This was a tad thin for me. Especially compared to the M3 series a while ago. The “edition” series of golfs is an interesting subset and worth a much deeper dive. I thought that’s what was going to be the subject here but unfortunately not. The 45 is a tad cynical from VW, with the 30:we essentially got the s3 engine with the larger turbo, the 35 kept that same engine in the mk6 suit and it was still a stonker over the stock car, especially with a mild tune. The 40 and the S were superb and creative, thoughtful efforts and rightfully highly regarded for all the additional detail VW obviously spent time working on. Now we have the 45 and my takeaway is it’s a cheap way to get the Akrapovic exhaust option….which is plainly not needed anyway..

Definitely not happy with the front end treatment on the latest iteration. It's just following the fashion for more agressive squinty-eyed headlamps and sharp features. This doesn't fit the Golf or GTI tradition and it makes the car less friendly; the rest of the body treatment is similar.
Let's return to rounder forms and a softer look, that fits the car well.

Fast forward to 2010 and I had a 20th anniversary GTI and then a 25th anniversary gli.
Really fun cars! My friend had a chipped mk6 gti that was wicked fast. I’d say that the mk6 and mk7 in particular are extremely fast and grown up gti’s where as mk1 and mk2 are slow yet loads of fun!

Started to watch with volume off, I thought Oh No, Henry has ''turned'' and is doing Dame Edna impression (those glasses).

This is probably a long shot but it would be great to see Henry compare the Golf GTI Clubsport S, Renault Megane RS F1 Team R26 and the Honda Integra Type R DC2. And if you're need of an extra pair hands, I would be happy to help 😉

Was the MK3 really that bad? Would be interesting to see a comparison against its contemporary rivals like the MK3 Astra GSI and MK5/6 Escort RS2000. All were about 150bhp, similar weight, similar suspension designs

Great video and enjoyed your selections for comparison. Hopefully we get some seat time from the real icons shown in the background in the earlier shot. Golf 7.5 R owner, and previous include MK1 GLi, MK2 Golf GT, MK2 Golf, MK1 Rabbit track car, MK1 Scirocco, MKIV 337, ... well you get the idea. -dc

Had two Mk3 GTI VR6s which I loved. After they were stolen, I got a Mk4 GTI VR6 which I still have and love. Would have replaced it but VW stopped putting the VR6 in GTIs, then made the cars 5 door only, in North America at least. Recently drove a Mk7.5 GTI and was utterly underwhelmed.

Mk5 my 1st proper car I bought from new, fully specced only £23k! Had it tuned on day 1 250bhp…5 years of fantastic ownership over 60k miles it still sold for £12k great experience all round.

Mk 2 GTi 16v in green with big bumpers and BBS alloys - loved mine. After many years resisting a Golf and driving 205 GTis I bought one - and never looked back. wish I still had one

Strange VW don't have all the anniversary editions in storage for these kinds of launch events, 25th anni and Edition 30 being particular favorites of mine! 45 is pretty lackluster, wheels are total dung and should be in tornado red, not special enough over a standard clubsport!

I had 2 MK5 GTI Edition 30's - One standard and one modified 2+, amazing car but aging now, and if i was to consider another golf, i think i still prefer the mk5 over the mk8.

Yeah, they cheated with emissions, they're dead to me. The software solution killed muy Touran. And I had a MKIV Golf before it. But same mistake not gonna.

@@julencin2000 Yes that was very unfortunate. Some of their engine designs have also been questionable. But on the whole I would say I like their design language, attention to detail and simplicity/quality of the interiors. They also sound great, I have a Petrol Polo Mk5 and I love it

My first car was a Mark III VW Golf 1.4 and I drove the living daylights out of it! I loved driving that car but it sadly lacked electric windows and AC, so on a hot day you were cooking in the driver’s seat! The only you could cool down was with the windows down whilst also getting a one arm tan!

Great video Henry ..personally I’ve had 6 GTIs over the years(and a VR6).. currently have my 7th which is a 7.5 dsg as my daily which I like but my fave was definitely the mk5 which I put 70,000 miles on in 3 years and was faultless..if I could find a really good low miles one I’d be tempted ..thanks for this..brought back some great memories 👍🇬🇧🏎

I had a MK2 Gti 16V in the 90's and a few years ago got the Mk6 R, also with a slightly beefed up EA113 motor in it.
I had a look at the newer models, but the electronic dash and the price puts me off.
My Mk6R is a really good bang for buck all rounder, especially here in Sweden.
Ice roads with good studded tyres and four wheel drive dies put a big smile on my face every time I take it for a blast. It never gets old.
