Though sometimes it becomes a rule of three, "Kanin, Ulam at Sabaw" (the third term referring to soup, which some claim the rice has to be eaten with as well). I guess those sort of rules of eating plain rice with something else are common sense to many.
I need to memorize Kaname-san's respect to food speech. I've been eating past the point of being full because the first time I left food, the dining hall staff thought it was because I didn't like the cooking. No, I'm just full! I don't eat a lot! Your videos, Kaname-san are always very educational and I enjoy listening to your content. It helps me with listening to pitch and pronunciation of words. I think moving the Japanese Subtitles to the top and the English subtitles to the bottom would be more beneficial. I find myself wanting to read the English subtitles instead of learning the Japanese Kanji or listening to the words you say just because it is simply easier to read the English subtitles. or have an option to turn on English subtitles so that us Japanese learners can just focus on the kanji and listening to pitch and pronunciation
I agree with this. As much as I try to ignore the English and practice my listening comprehension, my eyes just go straight to the familiar English. I'd have preferred the English to be elsewhere on the screen or hidden in the subtitles options.

おかず (okazu) seems similar to what we call "ulam" in the Philippines. "Ulam" is anything we eat with rice because rice is also our main staple. "Ulam" is usually salty or savory, but anything can also be "ulam" based on preference. In English, it's called a "viand".
Hi Kaname. I absolutely loved this video for listening practice however I have a suggestion. Can you please use UA-cam's own subtitle feature and seperate between Japanese, English and Both? The reason I ask is because I use an app which allows me to extract unknown words from subtitle files so I can create vocabulary flash cards in Anki. Videos like this are extremely helpful for my learning so I would like to make use of them in my vocbulary revision too. Thanks
Southeast Asians are also very familiar with the concept of rice + side dish. In Indonesia we call side dishes "lauk" and yeah they are generally salty and we eat them with rice and try to make sure that the amount of rice matches with the amount of lauk

Japanese rice is so good to stick chopsticks in: it's moderately sticky and the chopsticks stay in one place beautifully... it's crazy that it's a taboo.
The reason has to do with funeral rites. When a person dies, you set a bowl of rice and stick the chopsticks in as an offering to the deceased. Obviously, not an image you want to bring up at a pleasant time like eating. Also, passing food with the chopsticks reminds people of passing cremated bones during funerals.
I noticed the ほ sound here is more like a spanish "jo". Does that belong to a particular local accent or is it standard practice? (or even a personal thing?)
The way Kaname explains the most simple concepts of Japanese language and culture, the way he breaks it all down, really helps me remember why I chose to live in Japan over 5 years ago. He's so good at explaining things from the ground up.

おかず (okazu) seems similar to what we call "ulam" in the Philippines. "Ulam" is anything we eat with rice because rice is also our main staple. "Ulam" is usually salty or savory, but anything can also be "ulam" based on preference. In English, it's called a "viand".

There's another meaning of okazu in Japanese that is naughtier. It's the material you use when...pleasuring yourself. Magazines, videos, etc.

Hi Kaname. I absolutely loved this video for listening practice however I have a suggestion.
Can you please use UA-cam's own subtitle feature and seperate between Japanese, English and Both? The reason I ask is because I use an app which allows me to extract unknown words from subtitle files so I can create vocabulary flash cards in Anki. Videos like this are extremely helpful for my learning so I would like to make use of them in my vocbulary revision too.

Southeast Asians are also very familiar with the concept of rice + side dish. In Indonesia we call side dishes "lauk" and yeah they are generally salty and we eat them with rice and try to make sure that the amount of rice matches with the amount of lauk

Japanese rice is so good to stick chopsticks in: it's moderately sticky and the chopsticks stay in one place beautifully... it's crazy that it's a taboo.
The reason has to do with funeral rites. When a person dies, you set a bowl of rice and stick the chopsticks in as an offering to the deceased. Obviously, not an image you want to bring up at a pleasant time like eating. Also, passing food with the chopsticks reminds people of passing cremated bones during funerals.

I noticed the ほ sound here is more like a spanish "jo". Does that belong to a particular local accent or is it standard practice? (or even a personal thing?)
The way Kaname explains the most simple concepts of Japanese language and culture, the way he breaks it all down, really helps me remember why I chose to live in Japan over 5 years ago. He's so good at explaining things from the ground up.

the way you are talking japanese is it your daily style or is it hust for us to understand better? i love the clear and slow way taht you speak thats good to understand but i would love to hear a daily speaking style so im not falling in habbit to this teaching slow style
I did not know 鮭 (salmon) can be pronounced "しゃけ" (I learned it as "さけ")
さけ is just a slurred version of しゃけ, regional variant.
