  • If you are a fan of Japanese anime or manga, you would find many stories where the characters enjoy colorful and delicious looking “bento” meal boxes.
The bento are not just in the world of anime and manga, but they are still deeply rooted in our daily lives today.
Many children will bring bento to schools that their parents have made for them in the morning.
There are many seasonal traditions like hanami where we enjoy bento outside, and almost every convenience store or supermarket in Japan sells them all year round.
But when did this culture start?
Why and how are they enjoyed?
So today, I will explain about the history of bento boxes in Japan, as well as how they are enjoyed today.
In the latter half of the video, Kazu, Harumi, and I, Team Let's ask Shogo, will eat three of our most recommended “eki-ben” you can buy at Kyoto station, so you can take a closer look at the actual bento enjoyed in Japan today.
This video is especially recommended to those who have plans to visit Japan someday, to deepen your knowledge about the culture before coming.

When I didn’t know the real meaning of why bento boxes were a thing I was once asked why the Japanese ate out of those special boxes, and I said “Well I’d rather have my lunch in a super cool box like that instead of some cheap crappy plastic Tupperware.” Cus like, practically speaking, it’s not much different from from a lunch box here in the west. And in all fairness, the lacquered boxes are super cool and very beautiful.

Thanks for explaining! It's interesting how each Bento was designed with a different purpose in mind. I enjoy shopping in Japan especially in lifestyle shops like Tokyu Hands or Daiso because they don't just sell stuff but stuff for every purpose. It's not just a knife its a knife to cut fish. It's not just a cooking timer its a cooking timer for the perfect half boiled egg etc.

We have bentos here in Hawaii. But the average quality had gone down over the years. It take a lot of pride and effort to make Japanese food and American grocery store workers are usually lazy 😂. I been to grocery stores in Japan and man their bentos are so good and inexpensive for what they give. Too bad when I saw them, I was already full from eating at a restaurant or festival (lots of cheap, yummy street food are sold during summers in Japan, pre-covid era and hopefully soon after covid era).

When my family visited Japan in 2019 we decided to take a flight from Tokyo to Osaka and then take a train to Kyoto, rather than take the shinkansen. (For that that don't know, ANA has discounted domestic airfares for foreigners to promote visiting all of Japan. Our flight was half the price of taking the bullet train, and traveled in 3/4 of the time faster.) So while they weren't strictly "eki-ben" we nevertheless had some wonderful bento from the Haneda airport in Tokyo. We all got different ones and shared the food amongst us before taking our flight. It was delightful.

One year after but Im vegan and was fed very well in Japan. There was always a fried tofu and a tempura vegetable option at the bento truck. It’s a large tofu patty but fried like the fish and chicken bento options. And possibly the most delicious tofu in the world.
There are sooo many vegetable options, and the desert cubes they always put on our plates were plant agar based gels, not meat based gelatin. While Shinto is very common there are also many vegetarian, vegan Buddhists so many many options for any diet.

A reason some people may not take into consideration is that maybe he works for a company that won't like it if their employees put themselves out there on the internet. If he shows his face online, he could potentially lose his job.

@@LetsaskShogo Thank you for answering! It's really honorable! :) of course, I understand that they are supposed to be eaten on trains, but why do Japanese do these kind of dishes if there is no possibility to warm them up? Why don't they offer sandwiches? You know, they 're easy to eat, don' t need warming-up... Maybe Japan is not a big sandwich - eater country? I think so... Breakfast, lunch, dinner? Doesn't matter... Eggs, beans, rice, fish, some soy sauce and everything is fine. Don't get me wrong! I'm jelous of it! I would eat them every day, too! Just wondering how come to their mind? that 'We make some fine warm dishes, but give them to eat cold... If you are hungry, you' ll eat them anyway '? Interesting the idea... But once again, they are really fantastic, beautiful and I' m sure yummy, too! :D greetings from Hungary anyway and your channel is really great! A New subscriber :D

Im looking for a bento box, it cant be pinku (thats japanese for pink) or any girl color. It has to be of 2 or more kotoba (thats japanese for 2 compartments) and has be be chibi (small) sized. And has to be really kawaii (cute). Also It has to be about 10-20 bux. And you have to post pics of it first (i want to make shure it's kawaii (cute)). And it would be nice if it came with matching chopstick holder (WITH chopsticks). OH! and it CANNOT have any cartoon pictures, or be made out of plastic. It has to be made of ceramic, or something like that. Also it would be nice if it was made in japan. and not in china or corea (korea) or whatever. I have found a bento box similar to the one im describing in e-bay, but it was 1 kotoba, and i dont want my gohan (rice) to touch my other things (it can get wet and i would not like that, plus 2 compartments looks more kawaii)

I've researched about visiting both Japan and South Korea and noticed that I might have trouble finding food because I'm vegan.
I understand it's easier to find vegan food in China due to the long history of Buddhist veganism.
I do admire the reverence the Japanese have towards food both while preparing and eating.
