I have been making bento lunches to take to work for about ten years now. They are a lot more fun and tasty than what I'd pack into a sack lunch, and this has also led me to learn some Japanese cooking.
You both switch between English and Japanese so smoothly lol it sounds so nice. I don’t speak Japanese (hopefully someday) but you both have great sounding English accents! Love your videos, this one made me so hungry lol
Thanks for explaining! It's interesting how each Bento was designed with a different purpose in mind. I enjoy shopping in Japan especially in lifestyle shops like Tokyu Hands or Daiso because they don't just sell stuff but stuff for every purpose. It's not just a knife its a knife to cut fish. It's not just a cooking timer its a cooking timer for the perfect half boiled egg etc.
My family and I love Bento boxes we order them quite often from a terrific Japanese Resturant near our home. The one Harumi had was presented so beautifully. Thanks as always
good thing i watched this while eating lunch or it would've made me so hungry. i'd love to know more about japanese regional differences in cuisine sometime!!

So enjoyable episode … what can be better, awesome company, food and fun all together… 😻 seeing this episodes makes me miss my friends going out, having fun and enjoying the food/drinks 😅 thank you all for sharing your thoughts on food (Kazu is so funny made me laugh 😂 ). I would choose the first bento (Harumi choice) because there is a little bit of everything . The best way to enjoy everything at once 🤩
When my family visited Japan in 2019 we decided to take a flight from Tokyo to Osaka and then take a train to Kyoto, rather than take the shinkansen. (For that that don't know, ANA has discounted domestic airfares for foreigners to promote visiting all of Japan. Our flight was half the price of taking the bullet train, and traveled in 3/4 of the time faster.) So while they weren't strictly "eki-ben" we nevertheless had some wonderful bento from the Haneda airport in Tokyo. We all got different ones and shared the food amongst us before taking our flight. It was delightful.
You're teaching me everything I ever wanted to know about Japan. Way more than I ever wanted to know. Are you worried you're going to run out of content ideas?
Okay, now I am hungry! They all looked delicious. Unfortunately, the Japanese restaurant that was near me, and had really good Bento Boxes, closed. And I always liked the custom of the ladies covering their mouth when they laugh. Apparently, judging by Harumi's actions, it's done while eating and trying to say something as well.
When I didn’t know the real meaning of why bento boxes were a thing I was once asked why the Japanese ate out of those special boxes, and I said “Well I’d rather have my lunch in a super cool box like that instead of some cheap crappy plastic Tupperware.” Cus like, practically speaking, it’s not much different from from a lunch box here in the west. And in all fairness, the lacquered boxes are super cool and very beautiful.
We have bentos here in Hawaii. But the average quality had gone down over the years. It take a lot of pride and effort to make Japanese food and American grocery store workers are usually lazy 😂. I been to grocery stores in Japan and man their bentos are so good and inexpensive for what they give. Too bad when I saw them, I was already full from eating at a restaurant or festival (lots of cheap, yummy street food are sold during summers in Japan, pre-covid era and hopefully soon after covid era).
In Nara, I bought sabazushi wrap in kombu at a train station, and it was delicious. This type of sushi isn't common in America, and I haven't found in my city. Bento boxs are sold in many Japanese grocery stores, and many Japanese restaurants use bento box to serve set meal.
I don't prefer seaweed either! Especially when it overpowers the flavor of everything else. This was a very fun episode. Those bento boxes looked delicious!
@@LetsaskShogo That's exactly right! We all have our individual tastes and preferences. It's better to be honest about it. Life is too short to eat foods we don't like.

One year after but Im vegan and was fed very well in Japan. There was always a fried tofu and a tempura vegetable option at the bento truck. It’s a large tofu patty but fried like the fish and chicken bento options. And possibly the most delicious tofu in the world. There are sooo many vegetable options, and the desert cubes they always put on our plates were plant agar based gels, not meat based gelatin. While Shinto is very common there are also many vegetarian, vegan Buddhists so many many options for any diet.
I tend to bury my eggs in salt & pepper, and can eat beef 9 days a week, so I would probably choose the Kyoto Beef & Dashimaki Bento (I've never eaten a leek, though).
@Shogo, I have 2 questions, Question 1 - How easy is it to find Bento or other food that is without wheat - if you have an allergy. Question 2 - Would you do a video on actually using chopsticks, some of us just find that a challenge! :-) Thank you for your great content.
Thank you very much for your comment! I believe if you ask the staff at the Bento shops, they will provide you with some options! And about the video about chopsticks I already made one recently😊 ua-cam.com/video/GKeJ8OZV2xU/v-deo.html
That’s so funny you don’t like seaweed because I’m obsessed with it. I want so badly to have regular access to kombu but I can never get any in small town Australia. Plenty in Sydney. I found out that actually seaweed is in my ancestors diet too. My family on both sides are Irish and believe it or not seaweed is a major part of Irish food in some areas too. You wouldn’t think it but it’s the honest truth. How cool is that.
Harumi's looked the most appetizing to me, but they all looked amazing. So much craftsmanship. I've always wanted to learn how to make sushi, but I'm terrible at making rice TT. Just yesterday, I made rice that was both mushy and crunchy 😅😂😢😭. How?!

We do have sandwiches and all other alternative lunches too! But I guess as I have explained through this video, eating rice in the bento form was more common for Japanese people from the past😊
It’s first of all trying to avoid the chewing sound to be hard to other people, and also not showing your food inside your mouth to other people either😊 I have been ttaught this sinceI was a small child! I’m not too sure if it’s all Japanese though…
It might be because he probably doesn't want to reveal his face for privacy. I've seen some interviews by writers or manga artists and they cover their faces as well so as not to be followed around. 🤔🤷🏻
A reason some people may not take into consideration is that maybe he works for a company that won't like it if their employees put themselves out there on the internet. If he shows his face online, he could potentially lose his job.
Im looking for a bento box, it cant be pinku (thats japanese for pink) or any girl color. It has to be of 2 or more kotoba (thats japanese for 2 compartments) and has be be chibi (small) sized. And has to be really kawaii (cute). Also It has to be about 10-20 bux. And you have to post pics of it first (i want to make shure it's kawaii (cute)). And it would be nice if it came with matching chopstick holder (WITH chopsticks). OH! and it CANNOT have any cartoon pictures, or be made out of plastic. It has to be made of ceramic, or something like that. Also it would be nice if it was made in japan. and not in china or corea (korea) or whatever. I have found a bento box similar to the one im describing in e-bay, but it was 1 kotoba, and i dont want my gohan (rice) to touch my other things (it can get wet and i would not like that, plus 2 compartments looks more kawaii)
Hi, I'm from Philippines and we have our own purpose and name of bento. we just call them packed lunch or in my local area, "baon". the purpose is to bring lunch if you don't have money to buy one. if there are more just comment
I need to make a very long list to explain that😂 And I’m really not joking… it’s the one thing my friends are all surprised too, regarding the fact that I’m training in so many traditional cultures of Japan😅
Where you lived in in Wisconsin--or was it Minnesota? I've forgotten now. Please forgive! But on the salmon, smoked or otherwise, the 'L' is silent. So you pronounce it SAM on. To repay me for this highly valuable, useful tip, kindly forward a pound of sweet conger eel to my home address! Thank you (very respectful bow befitting of a senpai such as yourself.)

I've researched about visiting both Japan and South Korea and noticed that I might have trouble finding food because I'm vegan. I understand it's easier to find vegan food in China due to the long history of Buddhist veganism. I do admire the reverence the Japanese have towards food both while preparing and eating.

It’s first of all trying to avoid the chewing sound to be hard to other people, and also not showing your food inside your mouth to other people either😊
I have been ttaught this sinceI was a small child! I’m not too sure if it’s all Japanese though…
❤️❤️
😍😍😍
I will go for the fish and beef. The first one looked to herbivore for my tastes.
In my home countries we carry "Lunchboxes" to school and back only ror lunch cause of it's name
@Let’s ask Shogo -Your Japanese friend in Kyoto But, but, but *”weed” is awesome!!!! *seaweed that is!😂
So, she understands English but doesn't speak it?
I like cute bento boxes. There is a lot of work into it. You have to enjoy it^^
Somehow I get the impression that all of the individual bento boxes reflect their eater's personality 😅
Why is Kazu's face always covered? Maybe he's famous. Hmmm...
hes batman!
sus lol
It might be because he probably doesn't want to reveal his face for privacy. I've seen some interviews by writers or manga artists and they cover their faces as well so as not to be followed around. 🤔🤷🏻
Maybe just maybe…😅
A reason some people may not take into consideration is that maybe he works for a company that won't like it if their employees put themselves out there on the internet. If he shows his face online, he could potentially lose his job.
7:21 BANZAI !
I call it happy box 😂
Hi, I'm from Philippines and we have our own purpose and name of bento. we just call them packed lunch or in my local area, "baon". the purpose is to bring lunch if you don't have money to buy one. if there are more just comment
I did not know about that! Thank you so much for teaching us😊
Shogo I'm so hungry 😭
Shogo, are there any (Japanese) foods you don't like?
I need to make a very long list to explain that😂
And I’m really not joking… it’s the one thing my friends are all surprised too, regarding the fact that I’m training in so many traditional cultures of Japan😅
Shogo I love all your videos however may I point out 1 thing I think you should pay attention to....your hands can get to animated at times. You seem to move them around to much at time's. As I said before. I really enjoy your video's I just wish you would tone down the arm and hands movement
So. Japan made lunch boxes before the West made the picnic basket around the late 1800s & the culture of eating outside.
I haven't even heard of this but ok lol
I've researched about visiting both Japan and South Korea and noticed that I might have trouble finding food because I'm vegan.
I understand it's easier to find vegan food in China due to the long history of Buddhist veganism.
I do admire the reverence the Japanese have towards food both while preparing and eating.
We are hoping to visit some of the vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Kyoto soon! I hope you can look forward to it😊
@@LetsaskShogo oh that's wonderful! Yes please! I very much would love to see this!
Is vegetarianism widely practiced in Japan today? Would I see a vegetarian listing…for a friend🐦🐦🐦
I wonder why Kazu doesn't want to show his face?
or maybe he is very camera shy! i dont like to be on videos either and i often run away from view 😅
@@saffron1996 Honestly he probably just doesn't want to be recognized when hes out and about and I totally respect that
I am wondering why too…😅
I am hungry now. 🗿
How are chiness bentos?
Why do you pronounce Japan as Yapan?
It would be more salty as the dish is served cold.
The L is not pronounced in the word salmon normaly.
Please also include vegetarian and vegan options when you talk about food... it's very important for us to know what to expect!
Keep in mind that being vegan or vegetarian in Japan is not common at all. Not the way it is in the US or UK.
Thank you very much for your advice! We will definitely be careful from the next videos we talk about food😌
Bento for the Guys and bento for the girls it seems....
