- In this video, I introduce a very common pattern of story-telling in Japanese. When people tell some stories to their friends, people oftentimes follow some certain patterns. In other words, if you learn those patterns, that will help you to talk like Japanese people do. You can introduce the context of the story first, then tell the processes before the main event. So in this video, I explain the pattern so that you can tell stories in Japanese just like Japanese people do.

昨日は同僚と居酒屋に行って、それからカラオケに行って、俺だけちょっと疲れたから早く帰ってきて、家でビール二、三本飲んで、映画見て、シャワー浴びて寝たかな。
一生懸命勉強して試験に合格した。
大地震が発生して建物が崩壊した。
田中先生には本当にお世話になったので、今日プレゼント(を)用意しました。
このスイッチを押したら、電気がついた。

スーパーで買い物してたら田中さんに会った。
この前さあ、森さんに「ちょっと太りましたね」って言ったら、すごい怒られた。

携帯のライト(を)使おうと思って、
こう携帯を手探りでこう探してたら、
手が何か柔らかいものに当たって、
それ触った時に渡し「ゾワ」ってなって、
「これ顔だ」って。
「しかもこの顔、ヨウコのじゃない」って思って、
もう私叫び出しそうになった時、
そしたら急に電気がついてさ、
パッて見たらそれおじいちゃんの顔だったの。
おじいちゃんが私の目の前に立ってるの。
もう怖くてね、私人生で初めて腰抜かした。
もう動けなくてさ。
そしたら洋子がそのおじいちゃんに、
「すいません、ここ私たちの部屋なんですけど、何してんですか」って聞いて、
そしたらおじいちゃん「真っ暗だったから部屋間違えました」って言ってそのまま出てったんだけど。
もうねえ、私その時本当に怖かったの。
うわー、それは怖いね。私でも腰抜かすわ。
でしょ？私まだその時の顔の感触残ってるもん。
でも普通停電だからって他の人の部屋に入る？
まあでもそこは湯治に来てるお年寄りが多いし、多分ボケてたんじゃないかな。
鍵かけてなかったの？
うん、鍵かけてなかった。そこ古い旅館だからさ、オートロックじゃなくて、鍵かけるの忘れちゃった。でも今度からは絶対かけるようにする。
うん、そうだね。でももしかしたら本当に幽霊かもよ？幽霊だったら鍵かけても無駄じゃない？
そんなこと言わないでよ！私それでもトラウマになりそうなんだから！

ねえ、今夜どっか飲みに行かない？
あ、ごめん。今日はある人とディナーの約束しててね。
ある人？まさかお前女の人じゃないよな？
女の人だよ。
まじかお前！誰よ？
先週ジムで知り合ったんだ。
ジムで？どうやって？
いやあ、その子ジムで一人でベンチプレスやってたんだけど、
それでこう潰れそうになってたから、俺助けてあげたんだよね。
そしたら「あのー、私初心者なので、もしよかったら一緒にトレーニング手伝ってくれませんか？」って言われて、
俺その日本当は足のトレーニングする予定だったんだけど、
その子なんかすごくかわいくて、
だから一緒に胸とか三頭筋とかのトレーニングすることになったんだ。
そして、トレーニング終わったら、
「あのー、また一緒にトレーニングしてください」って言われて、
そして連絡先交換してさ、
そしてこの前LINEで会話してたら、
「今度一緒に食事に行こう」ってなって、
それで今夜一緒に食事に行くことになったんだ。
うわー、いいなあそれ。俺もうジムで10年ぐらいトレーニングしてるけど、一度もそういうふうになったことないぞ。
まあ俺は普段の行いがいいからね。まあそういうことで、今夜は無理だわ、ごめんね。
はいはい。まあせっかくのデートだし、楽しんで来い。
おう！
んでお前、この前のデートどうだった？
あー、あれね、まあ最初はすごく楽しかったんだけどね。
最初は？なんかあったの？
うちらちょっとおしゃれなイタリア料理の店に行ったんだけどね、
で、ワイン飲みながら色々話してて、
結構その子と息が合ってさ、
ワインも結構飲んで、ちょっと酔っ払いながら話してて、
俺もすごくいい気分になってさ、
うわーこの子めっちゃ可愛い！
性格もタイプだし、うわー幸せだな！って思ってたら、
「そういえばまだ話してなかったんだけど、私夫がいるの。一応念のため話しておこうと思ってね」って言われて、
俺もうね、その時心の中で「うわー、マジで…」ってすっごいショックだった。
まあ彼女の前では平然を装ってたんだけど、「あー、そうなんだ」って言ってね。
でも心の中では本当に落ち込んでた。ほんと、失恋した気分になったもん。
うわ、それは最悪だね。
ほんと。しかも俺そんときちょっと調子に乗って「今日は俺のおごりだからね」って言っちゃったからさ、
結局おいしいワインとか料理とか頼んで三万ちょっとしたからね。
もうさ、俺女の人が何考えてるのかわかんないよ。
夫に飽きて、浮気でもしたかったんじゃない？
それだったら「私夫がいるの」なんて言わないじゃん。
ねえもし人妻だと知ってて、誘われたら行った？
行かないよ。俺はちゃんとした恋愛がしたかったんだよ。
俺が欲しかったのは純愛だよ、純愛！
俺なら行ってたけどね。俺なら不倫愛だろうが浮気愛だろうが、人妻愛だろうが、愛ならなんでもいいし。
よく言うじゃん、Hの後にはIが来るって。
バカ言え。俺らは日本人だろ？日本語では「あい」が始まりなんだよ。

「んだけど・んですけど」is really giving, "So what had happened was..." as if prompting the other person to get ready for the story because here I go sorry in advance LOL This is very interesting way to handle stepping into uncharted territory and being so polite about it. The context you always provide is great, Kaname! Thank you for your lessons. They help me expand my Japanese every time I see a new lesson. Again, you provide so much context that many text books don't. Thank you for being so thoughtful when creating lesson plans for us.
Did a miss the lesson on, 「わけ」? Because -on my hands and knees pleading- I would love a lesson on using it. I am terribly bad at it.

@@MiaMartel64 I agree with the other user's comments. Kaname explains it way better! I just happen to feel in this contextualized situation, instead of only meaning "but" it works as a sentence softener to prepare the other party to either: Enjoy the story or in case they don't enjoy it and you waste their time, you've already kinda prepared them to know you shoulder some burden. I'm leaning towards the second part because it seems like a lot in Japanese, if you speak or if you listen, the burden will always fall upon you that 'you could be causing an inconvenience so be as nice as possible'😭😭😭
Do Japanese add the "けど" with the "んだ" similar to how we use "like" (of you haven't noticed it is used a lot without any real meaning) in English.

I lived in Japan from 2014 to early 2020. Since returning home, it is hard for me to advance my Japanese or even review what I knew before, but I think this channel will be a help. I also found a monthly Japanese speakers group in my city. They go to a boba tea place nearby and only use Japanese with each other for 2 hours. I plan to go next month (I just found the group and also just had my son this month), and I hope some people will want to do weekly phone calls so we can practice Japanese more. My goal is ACTFL "advanced" or higher for 2024 (like JLPT N2 but tests all four skills and can be taken more often/via computer), as I was about JLPT N2 near the end of my time in Japan, and I'd like to at least keep my level. I also plan to use Japanese as much as possible at home with my son, because out of my husband and I, I am the only "bilingual" one, and I want my son to know a second language. 😅

I really enjoy these lessons. In Hokkaido, so many people use さ so often, or at least it seems so compared to say, Honshu. Appreciate the intense detail, and loved that final joke I, H. lol 🤣

Could someone explain the joke for me please? Like I know that I comes after H in the English alphabet, I just don’t get the hidden message.
@@Shaw_My_Guy Yes, but both alphabets start with the same letter A (Ai). When he says Ai he refers to 愛(Ai) which means love and sounds like I.

Great video. Very clear explanation of grammar. Grouping the grammar points inside of a category like storytelling makes them more easy to understand . A video on tense and aspect would be useful under this category as well, I think.

Woooooooooow I had no idea how much nuance there is when conveying how you feel about something in a casual setting. I wouldn't know how to describe how English achieves this. Maybe we rely more on tone or something. People rarely teach such thorough lessons on a single Japanese word or concept! I love it! It is much easier to study one concept in depth than to only sort of study the basics of multiple concepts and words all at once. Studying “storytelling” as a subject in Japanese is something I’ve never seen til today 😊

Seen plenty of ~けど without anything following it. Like かなり 人がいたよ！ 会場は 小さかったけど Like many things, ~けど IS NOT "but", it's something else. When translated it only sometimes functions as "but". For example, in Lithuanian we also have the same "but". But (no pun intended) we do have sentences with ~けど that would translate to Lithuanian with a completely different word coming at the front of the first clause, and in English it would be with a "but". Japanese is a completely different language group, so it is best to not compare Japanese sentences to English. Just focus on understanding how the ~けど and other parts of language function. Like with たら that he explained or とき. Only look at the translation to get the meaning of what is being said, not the meaning of separate parts of the sentence. When you do that it helps the brain make necessary neural connections for instant comprehension.
It is the same with many of the kanji meanings. You can attach few English words to one kanji but it is not these words. Like 浴 for example. Bask in the sun, bathe in the shower etc. 浴 is like this concept of being showered with something. Could be flowers, compliments, sun, water. Just with different/appropriate parts of speech attached to it. Though sometimes kanji it might have other unrelated meaning, perhaps related to the Chinese language.

Hi Kaname-san, do you think you make a video about こそあど when telling a story or talking about the past? I only ever find information about この、その、あの when the object can be seen, but not a whole lot of information about using them about abstract things or story telling usage.
You can also say ですが to introduce the topic, or maybe that is just for asking a question.
