My mother is Silent Generation. The poodle skirt thing drives her nuts. "NOBODY wore those!" She was quite the clothes horse in her teens and 20s, followed all the fashion trends, was a size 0 when she got married. Crazily enough, she was a farm girl who worked HARD and could lift more weight than a lot of men! She got paid her farm wage, was clever at sewing and made extra sewing and doing alterations for others, and loved going to town on Saturday nights. Her favorite saying, "Just because I'm a farm girl doesn't mean I can't look fantastic!" always makes me laugh! She's still farming and sewing!

@@ItsJustKylie- women couldn't have a bank account by themselves until the 70s in some countries (no, not the ones Americans love to call uncivilised after they colonised or made war with them but the "civilised" ones) and were considered stock value for multiple reasons and do you think they truly had an entire choice of what they were supposed to wear when wearing pants for them was considered a crime? No. No, they didn't. That's why some women and even men had tried to change things around by demonstrating this sexism. I ain't dissing on the american 1950s aesthetic I love this fashion style but it would be great for people to not dismiss the fact those time periods were awful for women and even worse for queer and people of colour. Oh, I’m sorry, but we cannot talk about Coco Chanel without talking about the fact that she was a Nazi sympathizer. At the start of the war she started dating a very prominent German officer when Germany took over France. She started doing this for two reasons one to, hopefully free her nephew which she did, and two to to regain full profits from her perfume as when it came out in the 20’s she partnered with a Jewish family. Now during World War Two there was a point where any Jewish person who had a title in a business had to give that up, but this family was smart before fleeing to the states for their safety and survival they gave their portion of their business to a non-Jewish family, screwing Coco Chanel completely over and for good reason too. After the war she was question but manage somehow to get out of being arrested and hid out in Sweden. When she heard that a memoir might’ve been written by her former lover on his deathbed she made sure all of his medical bills were paid and everything, so that book would never have been published. She did make a come back like you said, with that same Jewish family she fought with for years and lift out her life like a celebrity until she died. She took great lengths to try and hide that from her past. We cannot deny the fact that she was a Fashion Great, but she was very very despicable evil person at the same time. Some try to justify it by saying that she was just trying to survive. Even if she was just trying to survive why go against that Jewish family that helped her so much? That’s what always gets me. They helped launch the perfume yet the minute she heard the Nazis were taking away business claims from Jewish people. She instantly started fighting them on it. Instead of supporting them and maybe trying to help them. Just something to keep in mind when talking about Coco Chanel.
