  • I made an enhanced version of this song 3 years ago and it was a disaster! It had over 80,000 hits but it had to be deleted and replaced.
I knew I had to redo it but I kept putting it off for 2 years and then the other day I got an E-mail pointing out how bad that recording was and I knew it so here you go. After 9 hours of working on this song I still had 2 more hours in mixing the tracks and tweaking the EQ's.
What you hear now is very close to what I wanted this song to sound like. This was another one of those songs that give me an excedrrin headache because of the out-of-tune instruments on the original recording. Something is definitely off and I think it's the bass guitar and something else.
My first strokes in the beginning of the song with an E chord (with a 12 string tuned perfectly) would not blend in properly and that tells me something in the original is off tune. So finally I have a replacement for the

    Love was the game
    Fool was my name
I thought you'd know wrong from right
But you ran to his arms tonight
    Shame, shame
We had a good thing, baby
    Shame, shame
    He doesn't love you, baby
    Shame, shame
    He'll only break your heart
And leave you standing out in the rain
    Shame, shame
    I was your clown

You call him up on your stage
But he's acting out every page

The Producer on this song, Steve Rowland, was an actor in the late 50's, early 60's who showed up playing punk gunfighters on a bunch of TV westerns. I think he may have even played one of the Clantons on Watt Earp with Hugh O'Brian.

First of all Thanks to Kenn Wingle for a great sounding version of this song. There is so much going on in this song production wise. It was way ahead of it's time in 68; unfortunately though the production was a little muddled on the original. I have a country band and we are covering this song on our EP and this version really helped us hear some of the horn lines and harmonies and well everything going on . Totally agree one of the most underrated songs of all time. Could anybody give some info on the instrumentation used in this song? Is that actually a lap steel playing those licks throughout? Also is there any place I could see the Lanterns playing this live?

Fabulous! But...the lead singer's vocal is a bit low in volume at the beginning (:12 - :28). It finally gets to a normal level by :34. This happens again at the start of the 2nd verse (1:02-1:18). Back down again at the refrain (1:33 to about 1:44.) Overall the sound is so much better than the original 45 that it's hard not to choose this -- even with that lead vocal cycling up & down. I grew up with this song, own the 45, and played the heck out of it. A terribly overlooked tune, but it was easy to do -- lots of great music in 1968 vying for chart positions !

With your great ear, maybe you can settle something that has bugged me for over 50 years, Kenn. When this came out and we were listening to it in the dorm in the days when a great stereo system was our only form of entertainment and the contest was to see who had the best, we could never decide if they were really singing "Shame Shame" as in the title, or "Shame Shane" as was rumored. Not hard to follow. When this came out we thought the song was saying "Shame Shane". Reference to a guy named "Shane" the singer was addressing. Impossible to tell, even in this version, if it is "shame", or "Shane" the second time. Only the songwriter knows for sure.

Agree that something is slightly off --- but feel you made it sound as good as possible. There's a subtle but very perceptible, electronic amplifier interference on the original tape. They might have been using a fretless, electric bass because some bass notes sound slightly off, others are right on.
