Man, this is one of the best comprehensive reviews I've seen in the community. Awesome work Calvin. You covered a lot. I think if I get asked this question I will just send them your way, haha.
Last week I PM'd you regarding the Bradley Kimura V. I took your advise, pulled the pin and bought the knife. I love it. I've flipped both the 51 and the 32 and I like my Bradley. I will have a leather pocket sheath for it though. Thanks for the advise and your videos. J.R.@ Knife Thursday
I cannot find a Kimura anywhere online (in stock). I know this video is 5 years old but do you have an opinion on the Bear Ops Butterfly knives? It seems hard to find anything good around $100 anymore. Thank you.
Xel If you're looking for a really solid balisong still check out the maxace dmg. Comes with a trainer blade and live blade and is around 120 bucks. It holds up really well as well.
Thanks for the video! I have never owned a balisong before but find them really cool an interesting. I have decided to get the Bradley Kimura VI based on reviews from you, cuttlerylover, and other sources. Hopefully once it arrives I will be checking out more of your flipping tutorials!
I want a new butterfly knife but a benchmade is WAY out of my price range. I would like to have one that I can change the blade between a trainer and a real blade kind of like a model 42. Something cheap but not too cheaply feeling I want something that will last. Can you give me some options. Thank you.
For users looking for a beginner balisong, I would hightly recommend the benchmade BEBM004. I got it because I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy tricking with a butterfly knife and it has worked great! You can find it for around $30. Great knife!
Dude, i love your video. i am new to the knife market and after losing my old leatherman juice i wanted to get a real knife and have my sights set on a balisong. after watching this video im thinking about going with the Kimura III. THank you so much for helping me decidde!
No it's terrible the screws come out so easily if you flip it a ton like me. I learned the hard way. I'd save up money and get the best balisong in the world bench made model number 2 it is in my opinion the best of the best.😉
I bought my BM 42 when I was in middleschool. I'm becoming old, and I still have the thing and it's still great. I have a 51 and a black blade Morpho as well and I love them both. The 42 beats them for flipping, but I've EDCed the 51 for years in cargo pants and the black morpho for years in black dress pants. When you're buying titanium and steel products, don't cheap out. I thank the 16 year old me for buying me my favorite knife.
And this is a knife that takes time to make. They are benchmade, that's why they are so expensive. Handcrafted. Also considering the rarity of some of these knives.
+THESTORMGAMERhps lol they are nice knives theres no doubt benchmade makes quality kit. I live in oregon extremely close to the factory an i knew a few guys that worked their in the early 2000s and they say the mark ups are ridiculous. Also to soaring staraptor these things are wayyyyyyy cooler than a cell phone.
I bought a $10 balisong just to see if it's worth investing in a more expensive one: he's right, one of the sandwich construction handles just split into 2 after like 3 hours of just opening and closing it, nothing more complex.
I recently purchased the 53 a week ago, then returned it, and looked for a cheaper "work" butterfly. I returned to buy it and never looked back. I wanted another butterfly, I carried a CCC for about 2yrs before it died. Then I got some extra money, and planned to purchase a B915 triage. But I just didn't like the thickness of that knife. I got the 53 instead but as you said it is not a flipper, but so far a good work knife. I just wish the handles were aluminum, or at least had steel liners.
50-150 Squid industries(ship worldwide) Boker plus trainer(a bit harder to get) 150+ Modded regular benchmade or brs(some or easier to get than others) Hom rhapsody( I don't know if they ship worldwide) Brs barebones( package could get lost but worth it)
@@Themo2005 I personally don't recommend a Benchmade 62 even if it is possible to get one because it weighs a lot more than a normal benchmade or bladerunnersystems balisong
I love my 32. I can't afford a bunch of knives, but I did go out for the 32 and I chose it over the 51 because of the size of my hand. The 32 fits me much better and once you adjust to the size and weight, it's great for flipping. I can do aerials and spins quite easily, but when I go to say .. a solid handle Jaguar and back to the 32, it feels insanely light. And .. EDC is also great, even though it's illegal for the time being in my area, but that's not important. :P
Got the 51 morpho for a first. It flips, cuts, and is just overl a great knife. The bleeding caused by its sharp blade can be severe, so be careful (speaking from experience, my hand looks like a chefs cutting board :p)
+Austin shreve Do you know where I can get a diaper? Because this video made me shit my pants. I want to watch it again but dont want to ruin another pair of underwear
I know, the design is similar in looks though. But yes I wish they would too, I started flipping with a CCC but the handle play kill all my momentum and right now the only ones being produced is the 51 and kimura, but I think the community as a whole would like them to re-mill 42s.
+JUZZY BOXX You, sir, are a true imbecile. So what, Germany has strict knife laws. Why are you blaming it on the worst human in history and impoverished Muslims?
***** He accidentally said blade instead of knife near the beginning of the video. A 5.5 oz blade is really heavy for a balisong, and if the blade was that heavy the handles added weight for a knife that size would add up to almost a pound or so.
But you do! The only sub $200 brand you've recommended is BK. And that's my argument - it may have different materials, but b&s builds with excellent quality. I own several, and I also own a couple benchmades as well, and I'm telling you that the only differences I've noticed are weight, how long the blade holds an edge, and the latch system, which I definitely can say is better on the Benchmade, but could never be implemented on a b&s without ruining the design
You can tape the blade, electrical tape seems to work good, it won't affect balance, and if you don't put to much it will close just fine. I taped a cheap one, I don't think i would do it to an expensive one though.
The 51 was abit downplayed in this video. They have a different tang design which is a very good one, and has a VERY strong g10 handle, plus I don't know about the bradley but it has a spring loaded lock making it easier to open but grips extra tight when locked closed.
i would choose a larger one because it would be easyer to flip and a hevier one if ur intrested a bench maid 51 morfo cuz its not REALLY heavy but its a good beginer
You got that right, as soon as I got mine I flipped it for maybe 5 minutes before I grabbed the wrong handle and closed it on my pointer finger. Ended up with 8 stitches and a chip out of the bone.
The Mayhem is a Bradley design manufactured by Benchmade, just a heads up ;) I could see where you where going about the knives as flippers but at the end of the day a knife is a knife is a knife lol. I guess we all have our preferences, personally I love the 51 over the 42 as a flipper. I dont edc balis but a 42 as an edc would be my choice ;)
kimura blades are soooooo good for the price. anyone who wants to try flipping should start with this. then buy more if you want to continue and progress. but i got my kimura V blade and it is amazing.
Thanks so much for such great video…I’ve just begun collecting & flipping, and hopefully someday have a collection as awesome as yours!! Keep up the great work dude!! ✌🏼
thanks man ive been trying to decide between a kimura or smallfly im going with the kimura most likely for flipping currently im flippin a filipino hand made love the videos keep it up bro
Kimura VII for $82!! A sweet deal!! Im pumped, coming in 3-5 days! free shipping, originally started with a $22 jaguar, good to start with but i want something nicee!
I never saw this comment. But thanks! The kimura is always a good choice. There are better options no doubt but not for anything close to the price of a kimura. Glad you like it!
You know man, I'd have to say overall, all things considered the 51 is the best choice in that group. It's not super expensive, the materials are awesome, it flips great, it has a pocket clip for EDC, and it's high quality. It's not the best at anything, but its quality is greater than the sum of its parts. Just my .02
Intent used to be assumed benign. When I was in school, carrying a small knife was quite common and no one got stabbed. Knives aren't the problem, people are the problem.
I just bought a pair of K2s and they are indeed really prone to rusting. The humidity here is tough. They came oiled and perfect but rusted badly in less than month. Bladehq was hard to talk to. So I snitched and the people at bradly called them. After that they agreed to buy them back... I paid $180 for my 42 but in all honesty I would spend twice as much to replace it if I had to.
@mpb0401 bm 51, smallfly or kimura. you will have more control with the kimura but you will be able to go faster with the 51. Any kimura (2-7) is basically the same. and it will be easier for you to learn tricks on a heavier bali. plus kmiuras are around 90 dollars so that's a big factor as well. as far as collecting goes you should get the SmallFly from bladehq.com
You are right that it comes down to preference. I love a knife that is as good looking as it flips. I like quality materials and tight tolerances. With Bear you will not get this. IF you want a cheaper knife then by all means (and i have said this countless times) get a bear because when it comes to "cheaper" knives Bear is the better option. Bear has had sooo many quality issues and people these days are just more into the higher quality knives. You act like all i reccomend is 200$ + knives.
@sirhorsechoker Unfortunatley in some areas, you cant do anything about it, I pretty much leave my Kimuras in a bath of oil and they are good so far, but i know some people have to pretty much just let it happen.
I used to have a mtech twist, it did the job to teach me the basic's untill I lent it to someone and they broke the blade,. Ive been wanting a kimura since.. think im going to grab one :) What type of tool cabinet is that? model? looks fancy :)
Butterfly knives are not illegal in the state of Alabama. If you keep it concealed, then it is considered a concealed weapon which is illegal. The penalty in Alabama for a concealed weapon is as follows.
really good video Calvin! im a beginner with butterflies/balisongs but im thinking of buying the bradley 3 and one cheap training knife to get my skill up.
You can buy them online, bladehq, bladeops, etc. They dont give a crap... I think (not positive) that is you are a collector (having three or more balisongs) it is legal. But I'm not sure.
@CandCJones the bear and sons 114 is a great beginer balisong fro 30-40$ its the best one for under 50 in my opnion you can buy it with a demascus blade to for a exta 10 bucks if you want it is on the hevierside tho but if thats what you want its a solid knife and wont break on you easily
Benchmade is selling a new model. Model 62 made from D2 tool steel. So just saying, if no one wants to dig up a 42, the 62 is almost the same with a edited blade design. The 42 is an elongated blade, the 62 is wider and with less curvature more for use and slicing.
If you search for videos about why not to buy cheap balisongs you will see some where the handles broke because they were made of cheap metal or thin metal. You'll see some people describe how the cheap screws that were used got stripped from being re-tightened repeatedly or fell out and got lost. And, of course, cheap knives in general don't come with a warranty, so if something goes wrong you're on your own.
I have a 51sbk, and a Bradley Kimura IV BK, both of which I was able to have shipped to me, with proper circumstances. I thought Calvin might know other/easier ways to get them here or what sites he ordered them off of.
if i may say something about the smaller balisongs. the smaller ones are better for people with smaller hands. I'm five foot and not very big, when i use or carry the full size knife, quite frankly the knife is bigger than me. the smaller knife also allows for greater control when flipping when you're small. it works for us ladies. and we can carry it in our boot tops... just saying
Calvin, Im planning on spending no more than 100$ on a Balisong. But I'm still deciding on which to get. Which balisong do you recommend that's under a price of 100$
@blueray301 the 42 is the best so far, but no one knows much about the 62, it hasn't been released yet. but the 62 is rumoured to be the BM42 with newer technology. don't quote me on the though.
if you just want to flip it get a balisong training for like 15 bucks off amazon im trying to get save up for 1 and im at 6 bucks like 5 left to go and i can get a decent one
sooo i'm guessing I won't be able to get a decent one for like $40 bucks?
I dont think theres mutch of a difference between em. Just looks and name.
+FireAspect lol you've got no clue
+Canyon F You can, Depends on what your looking for, I got a fake BM42 for $25. Although its not the feal BM42 it is very nice would recommend.
yes you can. you can get a Bear and sons but they not sharp and that is part of flipping. I have to of those and that's why I'm watching this video.
no
you should make an updated 2018 version (since a lot of great models have been discontinued since 2011 or even 2013)
Man, this is one of the best comprehensive reviews I've seen in the community. Awesome work Calvin. You covered a lot. I think if I get asked this question I will just send them your way, haha.
Wish I could still find a 42 for that price range lmao
I love the sound the balisong makes its like music to me
put it in slow motion :) it sounds fucking awesome

I think (not positive) that is you are a collector (having three or more balisongs) it is legal. But I'm not sure.
@CandCJones the bear and sons 114 is a great beginer balisong fro 30-40$ its the best one for under 50 in my opnion you can buy it with a demascus blade to for a exta 10 bucks if you want it is on the hevierside tho but if thats what you want its a solid knife and wont break on you easily
@MPSecare Very true! And yes you have to watch out for that latch thats why I havent latched it up even once since It got here in its package.
in california, you can get one, but also carry it around with you on the street.
Benchmade is selling a new model. Model 62 made from D2 tool steel.
So just saying, if no one wants to dig up a 42, the 62 is almost the same with a edited blade design.
The 42 is an elongated blade, the 62 is wider and with less curvature more for use and slicing.
@WARRIORMASTER330 Save up for the kimura for sure, I should have talked about that a little more.
Man those knives are pretty! Wish I had the money to buy one.
What about the Kimura 7? Is that one the 'same' as the other also? I think it looks the best out of all of them.
I'm five foot and not very big, when i use or carry the full size knife, quite frankly the knife is bigger than me. the smaller knife also allows for greater control when flipping when you're small. it works for us ladies.
and we can carry it in our boot tops... just saying
I just bought the blue smallfly, great vids. Good work.
Heelo , please take the time to read this.. Where did you get that balisong case and for how much ..please reply and i like your videos
Calvin, Im planning on spending no more than 100$ on a Balisong. But I'm still deciding on which to get. Which balisong do you recommend that's under a price of 100$
Maybe aluminum? 440 stainless? There has to be an alternative.
I'm having a hard time deciding what balisong to get. I really want it to be under 200. I plan on doing a lot of flipping.
@blueray301 the 42 is the best so far, but no one knows much about the 62, it hasn't been released yet. but the 62 is rumoured to be the BM42 with newer technology. don't quote me on the though.
could you also start with a bear and sons just to see if you like flipping. not that I need one , because i'm not a beginner anymore.
I liked the Kimura III and V. Nice vid!
if you just want to flip it get a balisong training for like 15 bucks off amazon im trying to get save up for 1 and im at 6 bucks like 5 left to go and i can get a decent one
@RDS5284 Yes sorry did I say BM designed it? Also I am surprised you like the 51 as a flipper and the 42 as a edc, completely opposite, haha
Love.the tanto on the Kimura 3.
