    The reason for its tight restrictions is in fact due to the very thing that attracts people to it: The Balisong is fun knife to play around with. Unfortunately due to spikes in emergency room visits from irresponsible users many jurisdictions have made the ownership, use, concealment and transport of this knife either restricted, prohibited or outright illegal.

    As a young boy in the early 60's in the Philippines, most of my boy classmates (plus me, of course) practiced the opening and closing of the balisong. Most of us owned at least one and were taught by elder brothers, cousins, or uncles. Nobody really expected to be aggressive with one, but many of us carried one as a defense well into our teens. It was nothing really special, just practical.

      The balisong was the rugged outdoors utility knife of choice of Filipinos before the Kabar knife appeared in the second world war.
      The original balisong knives are now super expensive! The cheapest I got to buy them was for P150 each. Now they are at least a P1000 each.
      How I wish I kept those I bought.

    I thought it was illegal because it's a hidden weapon...kinda.
    I mean, I can flip a karambit or any other fixed blade knife just as well, but the balisong is the safer option.
    ANYBODY who knows of butterfly knives should avoid grabbing the bite handle - the people who banned them know NOTHING about knives and probably watched too many action movies from the 80s or 90s where gangsters used them because it looked cool.

    • @MyDirtyHobo
      @MyDirtyHobo 9 років тому +1

      +ShadyFoX #fuckgoogleplus Pay attention to the video. He points out why it got banned, and it's not a bad reason. You: "The people who banned them know NOTHING about knives and probably watched too many action movies".............. The real reason: People were stupid and hurting themselves with them. Too many hospital/emergency room visits in relation to them. There's a reason Butterfly Knives are so widely banned/restricted, and it's not because "the people who banned them know NOTHING about knives".

    • @f0xyLuv
      @f0xyLuv 9 років тому +16

      MyDirtyHobo Yeah, so why aren't guns banned in USA? Same fucking logic behind that, people are dumb as fuck and hurt themselves.
      People always were and will be dumb, there's no reason to ban something just because a bunch of idiots doesn't know how to use that thing.
      "Oh, some people hurt themselves, because they were riding motorcycles? Let's just ban motorcycles so nobody gets hurt."
      It's the same thing - people get hurt because they try to show off, even though they can't do something well enough to be safe.
      They hurt themselves, be it getting cut while flipping a balisong or dying in a motorcycle crash while trying to do a wheelie.
      In both cases people try to impress and end up hurting themselves. So why aren't motorcycles banned? More people get more severely injured, yet they aren't banned unlike butterfly knives.

    • @MyDirtyHobo
      @MyDirtyHobo 9 років тому +1

      ShadyFoX #fuckgoogleplus
      I think you need to do some real reading before you start spreading stupid online. Clearly you know nothing about laws, I'd suggest looking up the United States Bill of Rights. Guns are legal because of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. If you want to learn why you're so hilariously wrong, the internet provides the means to learn. Use your brain, find your answers.

    • @f0xyLuv
      @f0xyLuv 9 років тому +9

      MyDirtyHobo I don't live in America, I used that as an (apparently bad) example. All I'm saying is that you shouldn't ban something just because certain people have no idea how to use it.
      Motorcycles harm more people than balisongs do yet they aren't banned. I'm not saying they should be, but if we use the logic behind banning balisongs, almost everything should be banned.
      Banning something won't stop people from using it, it will just encourage them. Same thing with children and swearing - telling a kid to not use certain words makes him use them, because he thinks he's so cool and edgy.

    • @MyDirtyHobo
      @MyDirtyHobo 9 років тому

      ShadyFoX #fuckgoogleplus
      Balisongs(butterfly knives) don't hurt people because they're banned. And yes, banning them has largely stopped their use. Obviously there's people that still do use it, in many places they're "restricted" instead of banned. However, to compare a knife to a motorcycle is just stupid. Same thing with comparing it to telling kids not to swear. You're being stupid. With your logic, people never used butterfly knives prior to them being banned. And kids never swore prior to being told not to. Wrong. Don't be stupid.
      Back to the matter at hand. They are banned because they caused injuries. It is easy for someone who does knot know how to handle a butterfly knife to injure themselves with it. Of course, there are those that know how to use them. And of course, there were those that knew how to use lawn darts properly. Realistically, life doesn't change because they got banned. We're long past the time of it's relevance. If you want one, rather than bitching about it, go do some research about it. Clearly you don't know about the laws in your area: "I thought it was illegal because it's a hidden weapon...kinda.", so go learn about them. If you already have one, find out if there are laws that enable the carrying of it. Don't sit there like an ignorant child complaining about things you don't understand. Educate yourself, then come back and complain. It's quite simple.

    So lets clarify a few things here. This knife is not "illegal" at all. These knives can easily be purchased, owned and sold in almost any state of the US. With certain permits dagger bladed versions can even be legally concealed and carried. Illegal in most people's understanding means = You cannot legally own, sell , manufacture, carry for protection, pick your teeth with it....this kind of knife, period. That is not the case even remotely with the Balisong or gravity knives or switchblades. At least in America.

    I'm certain that is not why it's illegal in the UK, well almost any kind of knife is illegal here now but I think this one in particular would be more because of the fact it can be hidden.

      As well as the fact that the blade is enormous.

      Many knives can be concealed easily.

      True that. An ordinary knife is also more efficient when drawn out compared to having to do flippy fancy stuff just to open a knife.

    Let's face it. We aren't mad at our government for the whole protection thing about the knives, we only want them because they look cool as fuck. That's why I want one at least. And is there ever such a thing a too easy to conceal? I think not.

      good user, m.A.A.d internet I actually think the handle itself looks pretty ugly, but the art, the motion, everything about it is so cool. Handle is just my opinion though.

    i have a dull one and one with a comb inside. at my school a friend had the comb one as well and yeah its not like this knife is dangerous in combat i think far from that. the more dangerous knife is definitly the karambit or as we call it scorpion knife.

    In Australia, it’s mainly illegal because it is a 1 handed opening blade. You can cause the same amount of damage as a balisong with a kitchen knife you just bought from the $2 shop.

    I practice my trainer balisong with two cross motor skills deployments. regular grip and reverse. I use to practice the flipping etc, but it takes too much time.
