You see, the problem is that the model 42 was too expensive to manufacture, and benchmade was actually loosing money from it, so they had to stop making it.
exactly, eventually, people will stop buying their products. Maybe they could release the 42 and put the price up to cover the COST like a business should. That way everone wins
deezebee2 calm down, it's a single company that's getting too cheap to listen to customer demands, the only reason they make money is because they're so damn overpriced, people with too much money to know what to do with buy them like candy. you can customize a $20 butterfly knife to be just as good quality as a $300 one
John Rafferty If you can "customize a $20 balisong to be as good as a $300 one, then we would all be doing it, and be rich as hell from the resale value.
I've got a Model 42 and a 62T and this is all pretty spot on, but I will say that I actually appreciate the deficiencies of the 60 series for practice purposes because it's great for building finger strength and dexterity as I have to put more oomph into my tricks and the shorter handles forces me to be more accurate.
The 42 just looks better, in addition to everything you said in the video. It's blade is slicker, and the handles are more defined and overall nice looking.
Yeah I've been told this before about other discontinued knives. I just covered it cause many people do own the 42 and a lot of people ask if its worth pursuing over the 62 despite its inflated price.
I have a feeling I'm going to like the 62 more than the 42. I miss old school, heavier balisongs, although I'm a big fan of my 51, I don't flip it as much as I use it for EDC tasks. I flipped my Twist more than I did my 42, simply because of the added weight. I would have liked the Kimura more, but I hated its balance and shape. The 62 looks like it'll have every feature I want in a balisong. Great video as always, KZ.
10 years later, I wonder what you and all the commentors feel about the BM85 Ti that sells for $625? Channeled Ti blocks, CMV30 mag latch and massive. It feels amazing- looks incredible and almost made it into my collection- but I found a 62 brand new at a Scheels store. 10/22
I need to get a hold of a knife maker that will take me design. I have been working on it for a while now, but i dont have the exact lengths. I just know what the materials will be and what needs to go into the knife to make it the right weight.
knifezoid im thinking to buy the bm 42 but i am worried that the screws will loosen up that it will fall apart. im from philippines how many years you've been using your bm 42? any problems?
i am into balisong flipping, i think the bench made 42 is the best looking knife, and i love everything about it. i have never personally touched one, but in a few years i want to get two of the absolute highest quality balisongs made. two 42s are what i really want, but they are out of production and i would settle for two 62s.
i think the 62 flips better than the 42. the added momentum from the steel and the tighter tolerances make a big difference for me. i do have different preferences than most people though.
Well if they come out I have heard of people using red loctite when putting them back in. But if the are in there solid you really don't need to. Plus you can't really apply it since they are pressed in there.
Nice Review, I got a BM63 and was wondering what is the significant diffrence between the 63 and 62 as what i see is just the blade on 63 is pointier, longer and sharp as F.
ok, the 42 was a masterpiece.. everyone thats ever flipped know that. nothing else can live up to the 42 but the 62 is a damn fine knife on its own merits.
+subversive775 Except the Alpha Beast and Replicant. Some people like the 51 over the 42. There is also the Arc Angel, Basilisk, Ti Basilisk, EDOC balis which many people prefer over the 42.
i've owned a lot of those knives (besides the arc angel and ti basilisk) and the 51 and bradley are my favorites. and im not saying that a lot of people don't prefer the alpha beast (thats an awesome knife btw) or any of the others to the 42.. but the 42 is like the gold standard. while finding an 42, AB, arc, or basilisk will run you upwards of $400, the price of the 62 is fairy good for what it is. yes, for $300 they could have made some better choices but it is still a nice knife.
+subversive775 quality wise I can't argue. It is typical Benchmade which is top notch. But flipping/handling I think you'll find most people are in agreement it just isn't there. I do not see it used in any flipping/battle videos.
Loosey is CEO I'm VP, and Matt is our lead maker. There were 200 pre order ABs on Bladehq, but I think they are all gone now. We definitely want to make more but are focusing on getting these 200 out first.
Oh wow, so you guys all started it up and he heads it? that's awesome! If you don't mind my asking, do you know when the next production run will be available for pre-order on blade-hq or is there a better way to order an Alpha Beast?
I’m glad I was able to find a 42MC, in my opinion the best EDC Balisong Benchmade sold. I would say my 42-400 is better for EDC but since they’re so rare I’m scared to get it scratched or anything lol
yep. still have both the g10 and ti basilisk. believe it or not i haven't sold any of the balisongs for guns yet. the 62 doesn't really compare to the basilisk but i'm surprised how much i like it.
Great comparison. Lot's of valid points. I must say I do agree the 42 is gonna be the better flipper in this case, although I wouldn't mind giving the 62 a test drive someday.
Mad skills dude! Question - I have been reading about balisongs in general and one website kept mentioning to Loctite the tang pins. Do you need to do this on a Benchmade???
I don't think it was meant as a direct replacement. I don't know what their marketing strategy was exactly. If it was I'd say it falls short. As a stand alone new knife it's high quality for sure. Just doest perform as a flipper as well as the 42. Ti is definitely more expensive and harder to machine than steel.
Are they a poor choice? The crowned spine can be used without bothering to flip open the blade at all. Sort of as a more dangerous koppo stick. I have been considering the model 62 despite its inflated price tag, but my use for it would be primarily as an edc/tactical blade. Can you tell me some reasons why it would be a poor choice for this just for arguments sake? I really feel that the balisong design is more sturdy than say, a spyderco military, with its liner-lock mechanism.
Hey, I used to go onto the flipping arena all the time, then school and jobs got in the way of flipping. I've been lurking alot lately, and got back into flipping and have noticed that you and loosey are both now associated with bladerunner systems. Now did Matt Cook come to everyone at the flipping arena and ask what they wanted in a production balisong?
tronjon23 The 62 is basically the same knife but with stainless handles. Honestly I like the overall design better than the 42. If they'd just add a spring latch it'd be perfect.
Tony Flow If it was a spring, disc style latch, and the handles were milled not sandwich construction I would buy the 62. But $300 for the crap that it is, is not worth it.
Hey there knifezoid! i was wondering if you might have a fix for my issue. I have a polished titanium knife, but find the handles get super sticky. Tried powdering my hands which sort of worked, but can gum up pivots. Drives me mad as i can do all my combos way faster with cheap trainer coz the steel doesn't stick to my fingers lol. Any help would be appreciated. PS love ya videos.
High polish can actually be grippy depending on the finish. If you really like the finish you may have to stick with it and just use powder. Otherwise a brush/less polished finish might suit you better. But that would require refinishing and I'm not sure how much it would actually help. Also, try a G10 knife, tends to be less sticky.
I'm looking for a good butterfly knife and I'm not sure which one to get? I'm asking you because your a pro on these questions. Could you give me a couple recommendations.
when you refer to weight affecting the damage are you referring to the damage to the knife when it hits the floor or the damage to your hand when you cut yourself?
All I can say is, if they bring it back in some new way/shape or form... I say just Frankenstein the 2. The 42 handle as far as construction, weight & length with the spring latch, but with zen pins & have a rounded crown like the 62. Now that's a dream bali!
I'm looking for a good Bali just for flipping and having some fun. So without going over $200 what is a great fit and finish, light and a overall great platform? Thanks for the help,
Yeah, I was a little disappointed in how it performs as a flipper. It's smooth and has great tolerances (and sharp ass D2), but the dims and weight are too far off to be considered a go-to flipper. Great review. You were spot on... except the pb's in 42's. ; ) hehe
Benchmade should just satisfy every single person who wants a decent balisong and remake the 42 in a cheaper material. Thats why people are purposefully buying the cheap china clones of the 42. Blame Benchmade, not the people buying the knife.
Was going to buy the 62, then I found out it had a t latch and was heavier. Did Benchmade get bought or something? Seriously I'm liking their new knives less and less. The 51 Morpho is okay though.
So...I live in Canada where I can only really flip with trainers due to legal issues. Would anyone advise me getting the 62T? I want to effectively master the balisong, I am curious if the 62 will hinder me at all.
Looking at buying one myself, mate. It really is the best one to go with. Same exact weight and dimensions as the real 62, so yes. This would be the way to go. Best regards!
I actually recently received the prodigy. It is a world of difference from the CCC I was flipping. My only issue with it is, it is very pinchy around the tang, i actually cut myself on it pretty often.
Definitely, but i'm getting better at working around it. Moves like the cherrypicker almost get me every time xD. All in all i would still recommend it though. The prodigy trainer is leagues ahead of even something like the BM62T. Something about the BM62T that really puts me off is the weight.
Well, it depends on where you live, I don't know about balisong laws in Germany but they're legal in the US depending on local city/state laws. They are definitely illegal to public carry anywhere in the US because they count as a concealed weapon. Gun laws here in the US require them to be shipped to a local gunstore where you're background-checked/cleared to buy them, depending on the state laws. I'm sure gun laws in Germany are stricter.
I learned more 150 tricks and many difficult with heavy balisong 6oz same size same weight than the 62 and it’s very nice but I know what you think about him but i find the 62 and the 6X are very underestimated.. ok BRS is better but it’s so difficult to find and buy them, and they are so very expansive.. i love my 6X and I’m really thinking with training you can make the same performance with a 62 or 42
Your first comparison... The latch... And I already don't like the 62. Man I wish I could get my hands on a 42. I've wanted one for almost 5 years now and I can never find one. Probably won't either.
where can i buy bailsong? you barely find any online. all i can find are the training ones, and im really interested because you can now legally carry them in Texas.
It's a shame, I have had about 4, $5-10 Balisongs that lasted for about a few weeks each, and have become very advanced with flipping, and wanted to get a 42, just recently I realized they are discontinued. I want to get the 62, however the handles as steel and T-latch make me not even want to go near it, However I know there are legit 42's out there, not the fakes, where you can buy, would you know were to get one?
Because of the war, Titanium cost way more now then it did 6 years ago :/ But still BM should be able to produce an amazing flipper for all its customers.
I bought a 42 a few years ago for only $300. Then I lost it. I just got a 51 to replace it and I absolutely love it but I still lose sleep over that 42.
Damn your fingers are a mess...

I really hate Benchmade. Why cant they just listen to their damn customers? I mean, just once, one time. For one product. We want the 42!!!
You see, the problem is that the model 42 was too expensive to manufacture, and benchmade was actually loosing money from it, so they had to stop making it.
deezebee2 benchmade users should go on strike and refuse to buy their products until they re release the model 42 !!!!!
exactly, eventually, people will stop buying their products. Maybe they could release the 42 and put the price up to cover the COST like a business should. That way everone wins

Lol
@@knifezoid your still making reply’s after almost 9 years? Dedication

Two Bit Lol that's realistic.
The 42 just looks better, in addition to everything you said in the video. It's blade is slicker, and the handles are more defined and overall nice looking.
Your rollovers are wicked and so fluent! Im getting my hands on a 42 soon and that was just a God sent for the price I got it!
Yeah I've been told this before about other discontinued knives. I just covered it cause many people do own the 42 and a lot of people ask if its worth pursuing over the 62 despite its inflated price.

would love to see a flyti 62 vs 42 comparison.
Kra cranium I would also want to see this

A little bit of both.
knifezoid dude, great flipping and the fact your humble about it thumbs up and subscribed.

I never got to experience the 42s beauty.... But i have a 67, and i like it a lot :).
How does it flip?
Well. It flips..
Not really well then,I guess
i wrote that comment like after a week of having it and being in the honeymoon phase of the knife....
now its just kinda eh,...
So I did good when I bought the 51 instead I guess
It's like a snap on wrench vs a craftsman
Is the balisong-butterfly symbol etched in or stamped on the blade?
Ti is a lot harder to machine depending on grade. Keep in mind though the 42 was cast ti. But casting ti is not an easy process either.
Do blade of 62 is the same of 42?
Great comparison. Lot's of valid points. I must say I do agree the 42 is gonna be the better flipper in this case, although I wouldn't mind giving the 62 a test drive someday.
On the 42 are both sides sharp or is one sharp cause it look like on the spine it has a sharp upper spine plz respond btw good video

I preordered one of those alpha beast in blade HQ. If you don't mind me asking. When do you think they will in.
I have no idea about UK/international knife laws. I"m sure the info is available on a govt website though in your country.
Could be argued either way. I'd be curious what other think of this opinion.

why cant they just make more 42s
The reason it was discontinued is because of the cost of titanium has skyrocketed.
so why dont they make the same type of spring latch then or keep other design with just a different alloy
tronjon23
The 62 is basically the same knife but with stainless handles. Honestly I like the overall design better than the 42. If they'd just add a spring latch it'd be perfect.
Tony Flow If it was a spring, disc style latch, and the handles were milled not sandwich construction I would buy the 62. But $300 for the crap that it is, is not worth it.
Aidan G.
Milled stainless handles would be way too heavy.
I doubt it'll ever wear it down. I have heard of them getting loose on older BM models but it's very rare, however, it can be fixed.
Any help would be appreciated.

is there anywhere you can pickup a 42 for a lower price?? maybe used or something?
I'm looking for a good butterfly knife and I'm not sure which one to get? I'm asking you because your a pro on these questions. Could you give me a couple recommendations.
when you refer to weight affecting the damage are you referring to the damage to the knife when it hits the floor or the damage to your hand when you cut yourself?
Carl Moore kinda both but I meant more of the hand in this case
so what is a better knife for flipping the 42 or 62?
thanks for telling me to choose a bali that you can't even get any more. great advice!
Are the body screws the same for both models?
All I can say is, if they bring it back in some new way/shape or form... I say just Frankenstein the 2. The 42 handle as far as construction, weight & length with the spring latch, but with zen pins & have a rounded crown like the 62. Now that's a dream bali!
Benchmade made that knife. It is the BM 42-400. BUT, they only made like a 125 of them.
what is that little open cap box right next to the benchmade box?
I'm looking for a good Bali just for flipping and having some fun. So without going over $200 what is a great fit and finish, light and a overall great platform? Thanks for the help,
What knife did you get
Man, what an awesome comparison!
I have a question, do you carry your balisongs out and is it legal where you live?
I've gotten cut up on the most basic openings so it could happen anytime. So bring bandaids!
i want to get a balisong. Any sugestions?
Where do you get that pocket clip?
Mine is a 42 MC which came with a clip stick from Benchmade.
Could you do a comparison with the 51 in terms of flipping?
Yeah, I was a little disappointed in how it performs as a flipper. It's smooth and has great tolerances (and sharp ass D2), but the dims and weight are too far off to be considered a go-to flipper. Great review. You were spot on... except the pb's in 42's.
; ) hehe
how many years have you been flipping? great stuff man.
Where can I buy a benchmade 42 balisong ? I can't find on ebay or amazon, help ! Thanks.
My hands hurt just watching this video
Is 62 good for beginner tricks?
Cant believe I missed out on the 42. Hope to flip one someday. 62 it is lol great review
I think I did a vid on zen pins vs tang pins. Man I should check. IF I didn't it'd be a good subject.
If I were to get the replacement parts for a 42 and re constructed one would that work as well do you think?
you can't just get replacement handles and blade.
Benchmade should just satisfy every single person who wants a decent balisong and remake the 42 in a cheaper material. Thats why people are purposefully buying the cheap china clones of the 42. Blame Benchmade, not the people buying the knife.
a aluminum 42 with zen pins might be nice cause i've heard of tang pins having to get replaced like calvinnation's . that would honestly be amazing
Was going to buy the 62, then I found out it had a t latch and was heavier. Did Benchmade get bought or something? Seriously I'm liking their new knives less and less. The 51 Morpho is okay though.
Whats up with the flytaniums?
So...I live in Canada where I can only really flip with trainers due to legal issues. Would anyone advise me getting the 62T? I want to effectively master the balisong, I am curious if the 62 will hinder me at all.

Jerzeedevil
They have a section for balisongs, and also one for used knife buying and selling (all knives, not just balis)
Correct Weight has now been annotated.
How did u get a pocket clip on the benchmade 42?
What the hell?!
They basically just downgraded the 42 and called it better! -.-

where can i buy bailsong? you barely find any online. all i can find are the training ones, and im really interested because you can now legally carry them in Texas.

please tell me where i can get one. if i can find one then maybe i won't spend the grand on a darrel ralph lol.
Because of the war, Titanium cost way more now then it did 6 years ago :/ But still BM should be able to produce an amazing flipper for all its customers.
Ah, double posting here but a quick look on wikipedia shows that "the knife is illegal in The Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand and Germany."
That extra half inch is everything
Makes a difference for sure.
has any one replaced the 62's washers with phporus bronze ones if so did it flip better
I bought a 42 a few years ago for only $300. Then I lost it. I just got a 51 to replace it and I absolutely love it but I still lose sleep over that 42.
You should find it, thats like 400-500 bucks depending on the wear.
Where did you lose it I’ll find it
@@donahue2508 Some ranch in Idaho
bm 42 with pocket clip?
the BM42 retailed for 180?
where can i buy the original one?
What do you have to do?
Does anyone have any idea why Benchmade decided to go with a T-latch on the 62? Seems like a step in the wrong direction tbh.
very nice comparison, thanks for the video.
Yeah I'd agree. But no way BM could do it for the same price. Ti is much more expensive and hard to machine.
If you want a self-defense knife, get an Out The Front. They're really intimidating.
