I wish I could smash the like button more than once. I'll collect rods from people, I've even pulled 2 from the lake bottom. I'll cut sections from a rod and insert & glue as you did. The one thing you didn't do is wrap the broken section, I'm artsy, so I probably would have wrapped it with red metallic thread. But that's me. Great job as promised

Hi Matt, great video! I am super excited for you to show us how to build a chatterbait rod! I’ve been wanting a special rod for chatterbaits and building my own rod. Really enjoy your channel and getting great content every day!!!! Thanks!!!!
Hi Matt. Thanks for the great video. My opinion is that rod balance is more important for the function of a rod than it’s overall weight. Im not saying that weight doesn’t matter but my favorite rods are the old Loomis Crankbait series 906 rods. They made the handles a bit short and they were uncomfortably tip heavy. I added a rod balancers to them which adds a couple inches to the handle and balances them. Now they’re a great versatile rod for cranks, buzzbaits and chatterbaits and they’re more sensitive. Btw I’m with you on the NE or the juicy style IPAs. Sooo good!
yep! thats why i mentioned that overall weight of a rod is not that important. the balance can make a heavy rod feel light so when someone tells me a rod wighs.4.9 ozs it doesnt mean much if its improperly balanced IMO
OK soooo now your brining back memories, I grew up in NJ fished with my dad off the beach in the ocean for years. He built or rebuilt every rod we had. would love to see you do a few vids on rod building. Lots of other channels are doing bait making i think you would be the first on rods...
You mentioned using electrical tape for covering the cracks/blemishes on the blank. Ive been using the wraps that are sold for tennis racquet handles to hold my reels onto spinning rods without reel seats. It has an adhesive, stretches some and fits tight. All with a great grip.
In the future I would use electrical heat shrink. It’s cheap and will give you a smooth rubberized texture with no adhesive residue like from tape. I’m saving this video for future reference. Thanks for all of your info!
Way to go "Wreck it Matt" good looking repair. I found a company called XHF heat shrink tubing that makes some great stuff with heat activated adhesive inside the tubing. Im not a rod builder but I've found their stuff to be helpful for rod repairs and other "oops" as well. Thanks for the detailed repairs.
I use this method to extend butt length for casting purposes. I find rod blanks at flea markets and use them instead of a non-tapered shaft. They slide into the butt end and need no arboring. Snug fit. Sand the outer part of the blank and epoxy it in. Then I use cork rings and make anew handle using files. Tru-oil completes the job. No extra weight and so far flawless performance.
I made a crankenstein last night and went to bass pro today and saw lunker hunt is selling up sized " beetlespin" arms and blades that would work well like you mentioned in your video on the topic
Heat shrink tube works well also. I prefer that over tape. Two part epoxy first if you want. That’s how I’ve done a few. Or in like the case of yours. Strengthen like you said with a arrow and cork butt it.
Thank you Matt for the informative videos. I have a 6' 10" Med heavy fast action rod that has a clean break above the first rod guide about 4 inches. How much of the insert should go into the top and bottom half? I've read several different answers, but trust yours. Thank you.
