Very cool to see rod repair actually being done. With the outrageous cost of new stuff these days, a little bit of knowledge, skills, and persistence can be extremely beneficial to those of us who don't have a lot of money to throw around. Thanks. 👍🇺🇸
Thanks Matt!! I am semi-retired now and you definitely sparked an interest in me to get into rod repair and building. Man, you are the best! Bless you and that special family of yours.
Matt, you are definitely an all around Pro,and I love your rod building and repair videos 👏👏👏 I also noticed Gambler has come out with a copy of Core Tackle, which is flattering, but I’m not a fan of copycats. 😮😜🍀🎣🍀
I've been wanting to get into building rods and repairing rods... I got into working on/building firearms and do a bunch of tinkering with hunting rifles every year and all the people I do work for also fish so this has been something I've been thinking about for a while now. I know it can't be extremely hard and it'll give me a little extra income every year so I gotta just dive I to it and figure it out. Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!
Mud hole is great, have the best selection of tips & guides, I'm planning on getting more tip & guides, I have many rods that are missing them, I hope to get started rod building, I believe I could do it since I'm a machinist & it would be a great hobby, maybe even make a little money! Thanks Matt!👍🎣
The more I learn about rods the more I want to start building my own. I was using the Ugly Stik GX2'S and other composite models and recently I got a couple graphite Ugly Stik Carbon Inshore rods. They have fast actions, they're very light and way more sensitive. Composite rods are good for live bait, trolling and some lures but they're not great for light jigs or Texas rigged soft plastics. The graphite rods are much better. But they're expensive. I'd like to start with a 7'6" rod specifically for 1/8-3/8 jig heads and soft plastics if you can recommend a blank. Last Friday I went to a tackle shop I'd never been to. It's almost all saltwater stuff. I told him about Core Tackle Hover Rigs and Tush hooks and he wrote it down. We looked at Google so he could see them and he immediately understood why they're good. So I hope he makes an order and starts selling your stuff. The other local shops didn't seem interested or the wrong person was working. Anyway I've told some places to try to help you out.
This should be encouraging to you. Check out how Kistler Rods builds their rods. No fancy equipment necessary. Just attention to detail and experience.
G.Loomis NRX seems to be the go to world wide. For something cheaper, match up the specifications. I'm not exactly sure, but I seen to recall KISTLER is starting to sell Rod Blanks now.
@@secretbassrigs I was curious about the blanks Matt uses but I appreciate your help. I was hoping he'd tell me the number for the right blank from the brand he uses. Those graphite Ugly Stiks are nice but they don't have a 7'6" model or a lighter model, just what I'd call a medium and a medium heavy in 7'. They definitely cast farther, they're more sensitive and they're lighter than the composite rods. I fish in the saltwater, mostly for flounder but I also fish for redfish and trout, and this will be my first winter on the Chesapeake so I'll try to catch stripers. I use 10 lb braid most of the time and the heavier action rod will probably get 15 lb braid. I'd like to build a 7'6" rod specifically for flounder on the beach and from piers or docks or my kayak. They can hit pretty hard sometimes but they can be very subtle too. So maybe what I want doesn't exist, but I need a very sensitive rod that can throw jigs and Texas Eye jigs and stuff like that a long way, be able to set the hook yet sensitive enough to feel a soft bite. So I think another 6" would help with distance, but I don't know about the rest.
Go for it! I’d recommend contacting Mudhole and they can match up their MHX blanks to any other manufacturer blanks so you get what you are looking for. Also thanks for the Core Tackle support!
Hey Matt. I’m going to do exactly that. I’m going to take up rod building this winter and see how I do with it. It seems like choosing the right blank could be a real challenge for the uninformed such as myself.
Wow. That is a nice eye guide measuring tool I would love to make my own bait caster rod and spinning rods it's been a dream of mine I love Pier fishing 🎣
one thing thats worked for me for getting the last line guide off, i heat up the very end of the guide, and let the heat conduct through the metal to loosen the epoxy so i dont damage the very end of the rod blank with the flame of the lighter. Butane burns extremely hot, nearly 4000 degrees F, and ive damaged a couple of rod blanks before someone gave me that tip a few years ago. This only really works well if the ceramic insert has popped out and you need to fully replace the tip, i wouldnt do it if youre just regluing the tip back on, but its still a pretty safe way to make sure you dont damage your blank though.
Matt one of my rods broke between the tip and the first guide down from tip . Should I just use the guide where it broke as the tip guide now or remove and put on a replacement tip ?? Thanks
Thanks, Matt, this is very helpful. What if it is an eye further down the rod? I have one, I love this rod it is so sensitive and was my go-to for ned rig fishing. The insert popped out of the second eye down, and I lost the insert. Is it advisable to heat the rod and try to replace the whole eye?
Hey Matt, could you possibly do a video on replacing a broken guide that's down from the tip. I have several Dobyns rods where they broke off on the foot of the guide.
Matt, I have a 6’8” St. Croix Bass X spinning rod that broke about 3” down the rod. Would you just put a new tip on it and reduce the length or should I repair the actual rod itself?
Yes Matt, I'm guilty of it also! Just finished one for my manicanic. Just haven't got it to him yet. Ceramic guides are by far the best, but the ceramic can also crack. This is bad on the line as it nicks and cuts the line. So guys keep an eye on this as well.
Mostly for cosmetics and a nicer transition. Some people think it helps reinforce it a bit, others say no. I think it helps a little bit but it is more for looks.
so can you replace an insert without replacing the entire guide? i have a spinning rod that a guide insert fell out of and was wondering about that. btw i have a small mom and pop tackle store that sells the hoverrig in Lexington ky
you can reglue an insert in but it is not a good long term solution and if done improperly can damage your line. Tell your tackle shop thanks for carrying Core Tackle!
@@MattStefanFishing that shop i about an hour north but I make trips that way a few times a year to give them some business. Its backwater outfitters in Lexington ky.
They carry a wide range of blanks. As far as I know BFS is just a lower power rod that is usually used for spinning made as a casting rod. Blanks don't care how they are built
I love doing rod repair. However, you make it look so easy that I'm afraid folks will screw it up the first few times. It's super easy, for us. Not that it's hard, but proper technique takes a few runs. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND people take your advice and look at the Mudhole tutorials.
First rod build was a complete failure. Bought two more blanks and having at it again. Don’t think I mixed my thread epoxy long enough. Threads were still sticky after 24 hrs in the drying machine.
Mixing epoxy can be the issue but you need to make sure the epoxy is exactly the same or it will take longer to dry. Room temperature can also make it take longer.
So matt that looks like just large hot glue stick. Lol. Expensive glue you use. Thanks for that video. Didn't realize how easy you made that look. When in reality. Someone has his fingers all glued together and too his face too, because that's what he does when confused. Touches his face Lol. Can't wait to give it a try. What epoxy did you use
I still can't believe I went cave man mode and used pliers to try to straighten my tip guide on my rod. That ceramic just disintegrated. Gone. Reduced to atoms. But hey, at least I'll have spares now that I had to order a kit.

Thanks for the how-to video! Can't wait to see you build a complete rod!!
ive got lots of rod building videos where i make the complete rod!
Great video, you can really save your time and a boatload of money doing these simple repairs…good stuff!!!

The good news is that a lot of retailers are already carrying Core Tackle now.
I can tell you truly love fishing & building rods and do it purely out of your love for fishing, subscribed man

youd have to just put a new tip on it. i dont thin trying to repair the rod 3 inch from the tip would be very successful IMO

Awesome
what is the thread for on most factory rod tips? reinforcement I assume
Mostly for cosmetics and a nicer transition. Some people think it helps reinforce it a bit, others say no. I think it helps a little bit but it is more for looks.
Decoration
Matt I noticed you don't wrap tread for the rod tips? Just a personal preference or do you have a reason not to?
no nead to its just cosmetic at the tip. I glue and then put epoxy over the connection point
so can you replace an insert without replacing the entire guide? i have a spinning rod that a guide insert fell out of and was wondering about that. btw i have a small mom and pop tackle store that sells the hoverrig in Lexington ky

Mud hole has all the videos one could want to learn to build rods! Agree completely!
Seems like most people stop before the epoxy. If you needed to replace this new tip in the future, how would you remove the epoxy?
You heat it up

Bummer you could have mixed a new batch and gone over them or removed the sticky stuff with alcohol and started over

I’ve wanting to try and build a rod just never pulled the trigger
Take a Mudhole class. I highly recommend it!

Why not use the epoxy directly on the tip?
i did put epoxy on the tip
I meant only epoxy, no hot glue.@@MattStefanFishing
