My mom wrote this on a mommy advice paper at my sister’s baby shower. “Don’t listen to people who say you have to love every moment of parenthood. I miss when you were little but I don’t miss when you threw a tantrum in Kroger about your flip flop being too loud”
I know this is supposed to be funny but honestly this is deep. This is basically what every mom (and a lot of dads) has to go through and nobody even realizes.
When I’m out and see a Mom dealing with a toddler having a tantrum or a misbehaving child I tell her she’s doing a great job. Everyone needs encouragement. I know I did.
I’m a mom of identical twin toddlers and I just realized that all the random criticisms from strangers have been men - “you shouldn’t be feeding them treats” , “don’t feed your child focaccia” , or “don’t you want a boy now”- all the women have asked if I needed a hand lol, there are nice guys of course but realized random strangers commenting have been guys haha
you said pack A toy. I have a 2 and 5 year old. I’ve seen a lot of great actors in my time but that man deserves an Oscar just for the emotions he invoked with just those FIVE words
Then you missed the point. The point is that though their can be tough times, children grow up into adults that have their own families and your family grows. That's like not having friends and forgoing a beautiful relationship and future good memories for fear that you might argue or fight sometimes.
@@teresai1877 No, it's like not having friends or forgoing relationships because doing so would chain those people to you irreversably until you die. Or until they die, in which case your life is ruined too. Oh also, you don't get to pick them yourself.
@Username I don't think so. This just shows that the parents we think we'll become isn't necessarily who we are, and that because parenting is hard, we often become our own prents, not always in the best way. This is just a humorous way to show that. Maybe you're just a judgmental person, and may not have kids of your own. See, I can guess as well as you can, even though I don't know you any more than you know me.
This made me cry because I was so hard on myself for not being a "good mother" but my kids seem to understand and know how hard I worked to keep a roof over our heads.....so for Mother's Day, I honor them for being understanding and forgiving
Big hugs, Christina. I am a new mom - my three-year-old just discovered laughing maniacally while throwing everything he owns on the floor. You are a good mother. You were a good mother then, as well. Well done!
I think kids know how a parent deep down feels about what's important. What I mean is if you're desperately working to feed your kids and give them the basics because you love them and they are important to you, they'll know. You probably had to tell them no more often than you wanted to, came home tired and irritable more often than you liked, but it is surprising how often kids understand, even if they were upset at the time. I think it is far more hurtful to children if a parent is absent because they prioritize work, constantly rationalizing the choice that they have to do so to pay for the quality of life for their family, yet never really getting around to spending time with that family. It isn't the same thing, and children can normally tell difference when a parent would spend more time with them if they only could, and when a parent just rarely does so despite any promised intention because they keep putting work first.
Not neccesarily. There really are different experiences. Imagine that what the clips showed mother doing - yelling and anger - that this is all it was. No bullying, no unfairness, no judging like a crazy person, no scapegoating, no lashing out like kid is the punching bag, no shit like this. That she was fair and tried her best - and because she was human she obviously lost her shit sometimes - but that was it. It was surface emotions and when they passed she wanted to again be the best mother she could be, supportive and non-judgemental. I can imagine if that was the case the daughter wouldn't remember yelling. I have few friends who couldn't stand their mothers as teens - they crossed twenty and practically built their mothers a shrine (they had no kids, just 20 year olds normal and stuff). Asked about it they explained that they were little hells and their mothers wanted what was best for them. So I can imagine it's real. See, thing with parents is that you could swear left and right and believe it that they weren't bad - because on the surface it looked identical - sometimes mom lost her shit, but she loved you blabla bla. But underneath the surface there was genuine toxicity, resentment, expecting the kid to meet parent's needs, inadequacies and ways the parents was hurt by own parent - now seeing how vulnerable the kid truly is while being the parent, losing their shit how could their own parents hurt them like this if it's plain and obvious this little shit is so fragile and dependent and vulnerable - acts awful, but it's actually obvious who is stronger - that sometimes makes them go nuts and they never realize those things in words. There are bad parents who look good. There are good parents who look bad. You can tell by being a kid and touching this place inside of you - the daughter in the sketch had a good mother. I, for example, didn't. I had a mother who used me as emotional punching bag and then, when I was 20 and screwed up university, run out of saved money I had to come back home because I had no place to sleep - used up friends and all that, no cash which was specifically saved for survival - it was freezing cold, I spend 4 hours outside the gateway to the house - she said no. She saw me and said no. I made it clear that I will sleep on frozen pavement otherwise - she was ok with it. At one point | called her and asked if my old coat is in the closet and can she bring it out cause it's cold. She brought it out and went back to the house. She never felt bad about it. My entire family insists I was such a nightmare (gee, wonder way, maybe being constantly psychologically scapegoated had some impact) that my mother was right to do that. No fault in her. And I imagine this video doesn't depict this mother - it depicts a mother that would be horrified by that. She got angry, she lost her shit, she made mistaked and couldn't take it - but there was a whole bunch of things she didn't even consider doing and behaviours she wouldn't do to her enemies - because she believed those are evil/dysfunctional. There really are thousands of different experiences of being a kid.
My mom never yelled at me or spanked me, but she did make me sit at the table for hours until I finished my dinner. Probably why I quit eating for a few years but whatevs ♡
@@xdlr22 Wow. I bet you did well in school. All I ever wanted was to be outside. Dinner table time growing up was very stressful. My step dad was very strict and he would hit people with his butter knofe if they reached for something instead of asking to have it passed. I sat as far away from him as I could. I can still see that slice of ham with black stubble still on the skin. How can a person expect a child to want to eat that?
I have to say what I think is underrated here is how the dad is not a lazy slob. I mean he’s distracted and exhausted too but he’s right up in there looking at the poopy neck and counting the crayons. You don’t have to insult one parent to celebrate the other.
I thought they were going to go down that route and he would walk in and walk back right out during the blow out part but he didn’t and then the crayon scene I was impressed
Most real commercials with parents in them, over the last 20 years, have shown fathers as weak and stupid. I'm really sick of that trope. Companies need to give it a rest.
I really thought that when Heidi called Mikey for help on the baby shitting out of her diaper, Mikey would run away. No, he just made some comments out of shock but he still approached to help.

This is very true, but it seems to me that it's become more of a challenge with the last couple of generations. It feels a bit like there are poor examples nearly everywhere you look. Empathy has become something of a rarified quality, and it's quite essential to living that sort of life. I'm moved by your post, but I wish it wasn't so atypical.

If I know comedy writers, something like that was most likely in the first few drafts, before the writers' room realized it works better as a sweet, touching tribute to motherhood rather than a sketch needing a punchline.
It's really not, though. You can hear the British inflections throughout. Love Emma Thompson (LOVE), but her attempt at a neutral "American" accent isn't great. Something tells me she might be better at a southern American accent, given how exaggerated it is, and how good a performer she is.
Today marks six months since my mom passed away, and my first Mother's Day without her. Glad I cherished all the time I had with her and get to follow in her parenting footsteps sometime down the line. Hope everyone has a Happy Mother's Day

Watched it once, laughed my butt off. watched it a second time, was on the verge of tears thinking of my mom and grandmother. How can a SNL skit be both hilarious and heart warming at the same time.
My dad has raised two teenagers with a some help from our mom (my parents got divorced when me and my brother were very little) and I gotta say, he’s doing great! The amount of times he’s had to help me with my homework while I’m tired and cranky and just want to go to bed is astounding. And he’s a teacher! His day is filled with parenting even when they’re someone else’s kid! To all the parents of young children, it gets worse. But at the same time it actually gets better! Your kids get more independent, they can be safely left alone for longer and if you do things right, they won’t hate you when they’re teens. Make sure you can trust each other. Aproach them as someone that is too young to know or understand anything, but as a friend. And remember to acknowledge your mistakes. I know I find it annoying when adults make it seem like they know everything and that they are always right. Hold their hand when they need it or ask for it but remember to let go at some point. Everyone has their ups and downs and everyone needs help every once in a while but trust me, it will be all right. With love - an 8th grader who loves her dad Ps. Thank you to all parents ❤️

Awww, the ending! That was so sweet! My mother died 12 years ago, I do remember some choices she made I didn't like, but I so wish she was here to make some more.
Mine put Vaseline all over the TV himself and stuck a glob in the vcr. I didn't yell just cleaned him up. He found my Bobby pins and was sticking them in the wall socket getting zapped. I miss that tiny guy.😪 Love Mama
When my son was 18 months old my mom bought him a super fuzzy navy blue winter coat w. leggings, matching hat, for Christmas. I put it on him, walked to my room to get my coat, came back to a snowman. Very quick little guy had grabbed baby powder and completely covered all but the hat. He looked so shocked I just laughed. He's grown now and has 2 children.
I wish a mother's love was unconditional. Most mothers have conditions set on their kids in order to "earn" her love. Like my mom. She always said she loved me, yet made me feel like a burden and a disappointment. Childhood was both confusing and very stressful for me.
it isn't hate in 'sensu stricto';for a kid this is how he/she perceive when his/her mother is a mixing of frustration and stress; perhaps when you have your own kids you will understand your mother better. And the parents' "unconditional love" includes always good and bad moments.
It's not hate at all. It's a struggle of finding balance between being a mother filling a role 24/7 and then still somehow being a person. I love my daughter unconditionally but my struggle comes with feeling like that's all I am is her mother and the loss of my own identity
@@laurendesiree854 that's because people over there (USA) have kids usually before they develop themselves and actually form a full identity perhaps. Way too young. If you wait till you are a fully grown person and have formed an adult personality, I think it won't be as much of an issue. Well for most people, some never fully develop an identity at any age I guess and others try to find it through motherhood. Kinda pathetic
The only thing missing in this video to make it perfect is a scene at the end showing the baby smiling, laughing or giving a big hug.. to show that really all of the struggles and hard moments are so WORTH IT for those sweet moments of IMMENSE love, connection, and intense happiness you get to experience with your child. ❤️ It truly is magical.
This is so me, but back when, our kid is almost 18 and my Mom is still my Best Friend and my biggest go to for help, advice, etc. God Bless All Moms and everyone who is a "Mom" regardless of genetics!
The "poop upto her neck" happened to me (not me, my 2 month old) last week, while on a 6 hour journey, on an airplane. Was so much fun, if i had a parachute, i would've even jumped off the plane.
My Grandson did that to me while I was babysitting him, it literally was up to his neck, me and my husband had to tag team to get him cleaned up, so much from someone so little, and yet he smiled all the way through.
I felt this. And the end had me in tears. It's so easy to beat yourself up as a parent and think you're not doing it 'right' and that your kids will hate you, when really they hopefully know you were doing the best you could and no one is perfect. All those times you accidentally lose it and you're exhausted from not sleeping and staying up with the baby, and being barfed on and poop explosions and you're beyond frustrated and cry out 'why won't you f*cking sleep!' that is real life right there. Here's to all the parents doing the damn thing and getting through life one day at a time 😊🙌

Awww, I’m over here crying. We all have those moments where we’re like “I don’t feel like I’m enough.” But our children don’t need a perfect parent. They need you. Just do your best & that’s enough.
got to say, I watched this after spending all day making the kids clean their rooms which always ends with me having to literally give step by step instructions on picking up the toys and putting them in the box less than a foot away. , dealing with stuff like a kid pealing paint from the walls and pouring the contents of a glade plug in out onto their bed (yep, that room is never going to smell the same again.) and finally getting a shower for the first time in three days after all the kids actually went to bed without a fight and this made me tear up a little while I laughed.

I am so proud of and happy for all the people who take it on, and especially those who can't have their own and adopt a child and make a positive difference in a Childs life. That is one of the most special things to exist.
Really? It’s the least relatable one in my opinion. So many of my friends have psychological trauma from their mothers. For a very solid portion of the population, we see that our mothers were obstacles to being mentally healthy. In our own life and motherhood we make a choice to be kind and loving, unlike our own mothers. Anyone who relates to this at least on the level of feeling their mothers were so loving is very fortunate.
Jenna Of course not, but the underlying theme of the sketch is that the adult daughter remembered her mother as being a good and loving mother. Anyone who can relate to this had a mother who at least was loving and kind, even if flawed. If you relate to the sketch in that way you are lucky. Many people wish they had that Emma Thompson stereotype of the “flawed but loving” mother.
Vegan Candy I absolutely cannot relate to the mom you described, unfortunately. My comment was meant to highlight the sarcasm of this & reflect mostly on the flaws of the mother. I was given a narcissist for a biological mom. I ended up very lucky to be raised by her mom, who taught me important life lessons & how to be a loving mother myself. I didn’t know that I would have to use those lessons as early as I did & literally become my brother & sister’s mom, in every sense, including legally. But knowing how thankful & appreciative they are to me, for that, means more than anything to me. I also have 3 biological sons of my own that are my driving force in life & I am everything you listed, to them. I am sorry you seem to have been dealt a shit mom as well. It definitely makes us unique & resilient people 💜

Very accurate representation of true motherhood and being a Grandma. The true story of things.
Good old Gramnesia!
dietotaku: Perfect word! I’ll have to use that again!
What? This is true? Well, FUCK having kids then!
Dude, the giraffe part nailed it. All of this has reassured me that my husband and I aren't failing as parents and that everyone is just bullshitting.
You nailing it I’m sure. It’s just the hardest job on the planet.
Most of them are just lying or are letting the other do most of the work. Never take what people say socially at face value.
"I don't even remember you yelling at me" is hysterical and ridiculous. That's the part we never forget.

Most real commercials with parents in them, over the last 20 years, have shown fathers as weak and stupid. I'm really sick of that trope. Companies need to give it a rest.

Being a good parent is really tough. To raise children with good values and to bring them up as good citizens is a huge responsibility.

WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT HOW AMAZING HER ACCENT IS?
I'd like to talk about it, I'm a fan of accents 😄 but since she's so amazing it wasn't too much of a surprise
It's really not, though. You can hear the British inflections throughout. Love Emma Thompson (LOVE), but her attempt at a neutral "American" accent isn't great. Something tells me she might be better at a southern American accent, given how exaggerated it is, and how good a performer she is.

It's true that mother loves us unconditional BUT they also hate us AF at the same moment.
I wish a mother's love was unconditional. Most mothers have conditions set on their kids in order to "earn" her love. Like my mom. She always said she loved me, yet made me feel like a burden and a disappointment. Childhood was both confusing and very stressful for me.
Definitely not hate, but I get what you're saying 😂
it isn't hate in 'sensu stricto';for a kid this is how he/she perceive when his/her mother is a mixing of frustration and stress; perhaps when you have your own kids you will understand your mother better.
They finally gave Heidi a different role than her usual one, this was awesome. I always love the Mother’s Day skit as well.
This is the most relatable skit SNL’s ever done.
Vegan Candy did you watch it? She clearly is not a perfect mom.
It definitely makes us unique & resilient people 💜
This is perfect for an 71 year old man who lost his mom in 2008..blessing to you all you are all superb
“In the bedroom we’re still a married couple. She then preceded to fart and in disgust he covers his face” 🤪😜🤣😂
Legit
thanks for that heater of a play by play what would we do without you
Dan You’re being rude.
@Dan Jeez calm down. That's so unnecessarily mean.
Grow up Danny Boy.
Nice original sketch. Great job SNL
It was a nice skit, but it reminded me of the Amy Schumer one from last Mother's Day.
Not original, very much the same idea from Amy Schumer’s guest host episode
MsQuartermaine oh god well if Amy Schumer did it then it ain’t original
Amy Schumer wishes her sketch was as funny as this one. Something may not be original, but doesn’t always equate to being equals.
i just wanna know when "G^od damn it!" & "Chr^st!" became legal for network. Same with "Sh^t!" & "A$$hole." on cable. The FCC can't legally caption it, so idk what's going on? i don't mind it too much, esp. cable, cos i'm PAYING FOR NOT-NETWORK-TV. (That was the sales pitch back when cable was invented, i remember it.) As a buddhist, i think we need to be compassionate. As a Dem/Ind, 40 year resident in the state home of the Westboro Baptist 'Church': KANSAS, that one PHRASE, means i can't share this w/ my fbfs w/o getting jumped all over, & that's a shame cos it was funny!! Oh, well. Happy Sunday all!! ✌💗💞
Yes it’s hard and it’s good. And that’s life isn’t it? Most worthwhile things are hard too. There are rewards to being a mom that can’t be contained in words like when my 7 year old walked up to me when I was out of control wailing over my dad’s death and he put his arms around me, held me for the longest time and patted my back saying “shhh, shhh....” it’s was it surreal and one of the most beautiful moments of my life. What beautiful mercy From my child to me in my deep grief. Here’s to moms in all the glorious and hard and beautiful! Life happens in these moments! 🙏🏻♥️
Oh man, that's some good, sweet love you can't compare to another human in the whole world! That's it, that is the reason why we all do it. The love. There is nothing like it, no other love stronger and nothing more precious than the love shared between child and parent.
My daughter can sense my stress (work from home) and she will just hug me
WHY DIDN'T YOU PACK THE GODDAMN GIRAFFE???!!!
“Enjoying the show Cheryl???”
“Hell no!”
I'm pregnant with my second. Watching this and thinking "omg! About to go through all this again 😂😭
Are you married?
@@Jesuisderetour87 thirsty ass
oh my God me too!!!!!
Please only have children if you are married to a good man who’s willing to provide and support the family.
@@vegancandy9570 lolz. Thanks.
Well....that was a refreshing walk down memory lane...
I love this skit because it’s just so true. To all the moms. Happy Mother’s Day!
The fact Emma can look like a young mom with just a wig change is impressive
Really great skit! I'm glad media is finally showing the true hard work that goes into being a mother!
My wife was dressed for work, ready to go, picked up the youngest to say good-bye, and he COVERED her and himself in puke.
She smiled and took him straight into the shower... both still fully clothed. Kids are fun!
Happy Mother's Day!🎉🙌
Dude what were you doing? Help her.
She scrubbed him up then passed him off to me to dry and change him so she wouldn't be late for work.
TEAMWORK is a must!😉👍
@@MrJLCharbonneau A medal for Jack. putting the clean clothes on an already washed kid is truly the scut work of parenting.
kes S exactly, jack is a trash bag husband
@@safslut01 What a fast and harsh judgement from someone called slut. Why do you hate men?
I come back here just to watch the part " Enjoy the show Cheryl? Hell no.." i keep watching it repeatedly.. This is what they say a very brilliant short scene but the impact is forever😘
That part is hilarious!🤣
Emma Thompson is still stunning at her age 🥰😍😘🥰😍😘
Best skit so far 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
This was actually one of the funniest SNL skits I've seen in a very long time. Or, it could be lack of sleep due to a 2 month old.
Emma Thompson is a jewel, she is just wonderful
I love all the sketches they do like this
Fdelete
This was surprisingly sweet as well as hilarious.😂💕
This is my favorite Saturday night live skit ever. It's so freaking funny because it's so truthful, honest and in the end heart felt. Love it, it always makes me laugh and smile.
The best way to ever raise a child....be the adult you wish they'd become, from the moment BEFORE conception.
