    Thanks John. Good stuff, clear explanation. I have a 97 F250 with E4OD. Often slams into third gear when up-shifting on a hill (no tow) and/or when up-shifting with a tow load on the flat or uphill. Seldom if ever happens on the flat unless accelerating hard for a merge. I think I know where to start looking now.

    Thanks, I think this is the best video I have seen on the accumulator springs, my Expedition is doing the hard shift from 1 to 2 slightly 2 to 3 and smooth 3 to 4. Going to tackle this job this weekend.

      David Smith We get them in often with many broken springs however I am in Colorado and we have to climb mountains constantly in our cars. Our shop in California never has the issues we do here and the one in Texas has less issues then either shop. I think climate has a lot to do with failure of transmissions now days to be honest. What do you think?

      John Perkins it actually was not the springs, I replaced them since I had them and was in there. That was my last try at a fix so I let it sit for a while then took it in and they took some stuff apart to test and everything tested okay, when they put it back together the problem wouldn't repeat. I have been driving it for almost a month with no more problems, I think it must of just been a loose connection somewhere.

      That was going to be my next quess. That plug fools even me sometimes. Also under the air breather on the driver side it has a wire harness that loves to rub on metal and cause all kinds of problems. Check that and rewrap it as needed before you have an issue. Its very common on that suv.

    Old video I know but a lot of good information.
    My 02 f250 has a weird 2-3 shift. Its not hard but does a weird double bump as it shifts to 3rd. Rpms dont flair and it happens fast. Doesn't always do it and it varies in severity depending on throttle position. WOT is actually very smooth.
    You're in 2nd, rpms rising to the 3rd shift point, bump bump, now you're in 3rd gear.
    Like it bumps then bumps to 3rd. Very hard to describe.
    I changed fluid and filter @ 136k. No change in performance. Usual fuzz on magnet and there was pepper flake like metallic debris in pan. Looked identical to the flakey powder used in shotgun shells. And ideas to where I should start?

    John...great video. I have a 1994 Ford F-150 with an intermittent shift problem. Occasionally it will go neutral... Rev... I'll instantly get off the accelerator a couple of seconds until it shifts smoothly back into gear. I've taken it to several reputable shops and each one has a different diagnosis. From the internet I've gathered that it's either the Neutral Safety Switch or Leaky Capacitors in the Computer... do you agree? I have rebuilt two 700R4 and one A4ODE...so I'm not totally ignorant...just don't want to take a shotgun approach to this diagnosis and repair.

    yes we have a shop and rebuild them on site. many places sell them rebuilt. transtar. wit. pa parts. sonnax has one I think also

    The TPS on my truck started missing up and it would cause my truck to change from 2-3 then 3-2 real fast a bunch of times. I replaced the entire peddle
    Assembly and now when my truck goes from 2-3 it is a very hard shift. If I am little on the throttle it bangs into gear, if I am wide open it does a very long slow shift. If I got 3/4 throttle it shifts normal.

    Great video. Can you use a shotgun cloth tip and solvent to clean those bores? Do you even need that? Can just rinsing the bores be enough to prep them for reassembly?

    The 4r100 in my lightning has a kick to it, but 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th is brutal, especially when you floor it. It's very violent, and getting reverse to engage takes like 2 to 5 seconds it's annoying.

    Thanks John great video. The issue I’m having is a late shift from 1st to 2nd gear. The trans is rebuilt and has been working perfectly until recent. I’ve had the psom checked and seems to be in good shape. Any ideas what the issue could be would be greatly appreciated.

    I took my like pressure valve apart because i thought that the spring was broke because it was floting like you show.. well when i took the retainer off i pulled the end out with the o ring ok them i tillt it over and the big weaker spring fell out and so did the smaller heavy spring . well which direction does the washer and small spring go.

    I recently lost 3/4 gears but still had reverse, and it ended up being a stuck shift solenoid pack. I know this because I pulled valve body and accumulator body, disassembled/reassembled and had the same problem. I had a buddy come over with his snap on solus scanner and he opened and closed my shift solenoids with the scanner and it shook loose whatever was stuck in solenoids.
    I am curious though, What would be the cause of soft shifts now that trans is shifting through all the gears. Springs are intact and not broken. Truck shifts better when pulling my trailer than it does not pulling. Just curious.

    Thanks for the informative video. I have a 96 bronco with the E4OD and intermittently will have the transmission feel like it is slipping while taking off. It will shift hard through all the gears, then go back to shifting normally and correctly a mile later. Any ideas? Thanks.

    I thought this would be my e40d trans kick problem from 1st to 2nd. Turns out its not. Cause i rebuild my acumilator and isntalled a shift kit with new sorings. Still does it lol sucks!

    I have a 2001 F350 4x4 that want shift out of low, Rev slips really bad but will move, truck was running fine and then this started without any notice has 184K miles, Do you think its time for a rebuild or can this be caused by the valve body?

    that should be a 4r70w transmission. look at pan and compare to pics of a 4r70w. unless its a f250 or a ford "rare bird" they are know for doing that. stuck in 4th is odd too. usually they stick in 2nd or (limp mode)

    Nice video. My transmission has a hard kick in the first couple gears. sometimes it goes away entirely. other times it kicks super hard. Is it possible that broken springs will cause an intermittent hard kick? or is my issue something else

    Hi I have a 93 f150 2wd e4od transmission, was rebult 2yrs ago shifts great hot or cold but when you try to drop to passing gear it winds and will not drop in gear,like it slips, it will do the same by shutting off the od button

    2000 f350 7.3 4r100. shifts lazy from 2nd to 3rd and lazy shift from 3rd to 4th. 3rd and 4th have engine brake all the time. will rebuilding accumulator body fix it?

    Hi, you seem to know more than a lot of people. I have a 97 f350 7.3 cab n chassis.. when its cold it shifts fine, until few blocks then it won't leave 1st...if it does by over revving and letting off throttle it skips 2nd and goes to 3rd momentearly then to OD. but no engine light or flashing OD light, the other day I pulled a 24K load on trailer and I kept OD off and drove it like I stole it....and engine got up to 205 degrees and it started shifting just fine.....it does this everytime, I've changed fluid completely twice, changed the TRS and the OD, and speedo work fine. I thought third band was going bad and was going to drive till it quit, but its been 8months of driving. I just manual shift to 2nd then back to drive which then it usually just skips to OD, and then If I try to turn OD off it stays in OD with convertor locked until under 30mph and hit brake to release conv lock... I haven't tried getting codes since no flashing Od light or eng light. strange it wont shift unless cold or borderlined overheated? hope you can give some insight of what you would think Thanks, Carl

    Honda valve that float back and forth best thing to use to test it is a air hose move back and forth over the slots quickly to test it I work at a transmission shop and that's what we used so you want it damaged the boards

      Honda is a whole other deal. cpc valves are the only ones to really worry about and you have to replace the tcc regulator valve from sonnax. you can not remove a 4r100/e4od valve with air if its stuck. maybe a cpc valve on a Honda maybe. but a note for you is if a valve moves with air then its probably not bad.

    So how come adding extra springs froma. Rebuild kit also still kicks hard? But having just 1 spring in each spot the trans doesnt want to shift. Having the 3 springs in 1 spot drives well but still kicks hard lol

    Is this a repair that can be done while Trans is in the Expedition? Is there a rebuilt part you recommend for the Accumulator Body to replace it like take the old one out and install the new one? Do you repair these-do you have a shop? Sorry for all the questions but thanks! Great video.

    Good video. I had a n issue with a 4r100 after rebuild lost all drive operation. Any idea on what valve would be causing that issue. All housing were air tested,support,pump etc. All internal parts,sprags are good. Leads me to believe it was a bad valve. Any idea on wich valve would cause this concern

    I have a 91 f150 e4od. It will not move in drive until you turn off overdrive. Then it runs great. Once up to 60 I turn od back on and can continue accelerating in od. However if you give it enough pedal to downshift it goes into neutral. Any ideas

    Just had my 4r100 rebuilt. All gears shift hard . guys giving me the run through first he tried telling me my o2 sensors were causing a hard shift. Them it went from that to him telling me he doubled up some sort of spring in the accumulator body. I know this guy fucked up somewhere and doesnt want to admit it. There were bolts missing , it was about 4 quarts low. Should it be shifting hard or shoukd it be smooth like it was prior.

    I have a vehicle problem that I need help with.......I have a 2000 F250 and the transfer case explodes on me on the freeway! Im thinking install another case and Im good to go! Right? Wrong! I had to remove the front driveshaft at the scene on the break down and proceeded to drive away. The truck lost a sensor on the transfer case and the truck only wanted to go 5 MPH! I thought maybe the truck needed that sensor and that was why the slow speed. I got truck from Morgan Hill to Hayward on city streets at 5 MPH ! Made a lot of people behind me mad, but the trip was all on city 2 lane roads. I got a used transfer case from a Craigslist seller and still the truck wants to do its 5 MPH! Did I ruin the transmission?? The truck still has its reverse and forward gears, just the truck somehow went into a "limp mode"
    Any help would be appreciated.

      you need to check the wiring to the transmission and see if you have any codes. takes a special scanner to pull those codes. autozone scanner will not work. they will say it has no codes. find a trans shop that will scan it for free.

    I'm pretty sure I have the OD clutch issue and possibly the direct clutch as well, it bucks coming into and out of OD, but what parts kit do you recommend for the fix? Having trouble tracking the parts down.

      Pull valve body and try to tighten the 3 13 mm bolts in bottom of case. 2 are 10 ftlbs and the one is 10 ftlbs don’t over tighten them

    I got a question. I need to do a trans swap and was wonder if u may answer my question. I I have a 95 f350 with the e4od trans and 5.8 engine, and I found a 96 f150 with a I6 engine e4od trans. Would it bolt up right or would I have to change the solenoid TC and what not. I hate to buy for nothing. BTW awesome vid I learned a few things

    Any input appreciated when I first fire the truck up and drive it revs up very high and slams into gear quite roughly but after it gets up to temp it shifts like brand new also when cold and your slowing to a stop once you take off it is stuck in 3rd or 4th and you have to go to neutral then back to OD to get 1st back and it shifts thru the ranges fine I'm not well versed in transmissions so again any help is greatly appreciated thx in advance

      Stuck valve. Might be pressure regulator valve or shift valve.

    warm it up and then put it in and out of rev till it feels firm. if it clears up then its in the valve body. if not then its time for a rebuild. if it was me I would drop the pan and check the valve body anyway

    I've got the 4r100 in my 98 f150 5.4 4x4.. it has hard shifts, goes into reverse and 1st fine.. still will grab those fine but when shifting from 1st to 2nd its hard and I have to let off the gas to grab it and same into 3rd.. im thinking of replacing the shift solenoid pack.. it has new filter and fluid what would you suggest?

    also if od light is flashing then that's the check engine light for the transmission. get me the code. only certain scanners can pull those codes. not a autozone scanner.

    Mine kicks out of gear or revs up at the end of second into third gear, like it slips into neutral for a sec and revs about 3-400 rpm higher if I am accelerating more than 3/4 throttle. Its normal if I'm not on the fuel. 93 e4od 7.3 idi

      I think you are missing a gear and just don’t know it yet. Shift it manually and check each gear. Most trans shops offer a free dio so get at least 3.

    hi John I have a question I have a 2004 f250 supper duty I took it to a transmission place today cause it feels like something is like holding the truck back when I'm driving twice in like the last two months I noticed it wouldn't shit in to 3 gear right away check engine light came on two months ago my michanic said it was coming up as shift solenoid today transmission guy said I need shift manifold and a service it has 116000 I am original owner thanks in advance

      also there is no shift manifold on any trans I've ever heard of. go to another shop but the repair is super easy for a d.I.y.

      Very easy task my friend. 30 torx. Inch pound torque wrench. 90 inch pounds. Unplug it before removing don't forget that. Be careful pulling it down or you will be replacing the vb gasket. That's not so easy.

    John I have a 2002 f350 that I end up replacing the computer ( it started with OD blinking and really hard shifting in all gears )
    The mechanic got the codes , he changed the selenoid pack check the wiring and put the new computer , truck runs good but it shifts hard ( not the bad now ) in 2nd 3rd or 4th depending how fast I take off
    It didn't do it before only after the OD started blinking
    The mechanic told me it's normal in 3rd but I been driving it for a week everyday and I noticed all that ,
    Any ideas what it could be

      +EDWIN VILLAFANE : valve body or epc/ soleniod pack is my bet.

    My 1996 F150 XL 5.0L is delaying while shifting third to fourth. A days ago it shifting betwen thirty and 35 miles per hour but now it shifting at 40 or 45 miles per hour and when i push all the gas it doesn't response, the engine just sounds.

    Hi, I have a 2004 Lincoln navigator and it does the same hard shifting on 2&3 gear but only when is warm or operational temp, when is first started of the day it shift smooth but after driving around start shifting hard really hard, I replace the solenoid pack and I flash the trans fluid new filter and I notice that it takes a little longer to start shifting hard but no much difference, does anyone know if the valve body my be my problem?

    Hey I have a 94 e4od. My problem is randomly it will have delayed shifts meaning it will rev high for a second or two and kick into each gear. I can also feel hard downshifting like coming to a stop. But 5 min later It can shift perfectly. Any ideas? I had trans rebuild their blaming something electrical. No code either both were scanned. Going on four years and still trying to figure it out thanks

      TPS pcm temp sensor coolant temp sensor transmission transmission trs or many other things can cause this. Pin out test

      I'm having the same problem in my 94 🙃 did you ever figure it out. Mines doing the same thing its really annoying

      @@baylenhulsey7800 no I did not and I gave up on it. After a ton of $$$ my last guess would have been how the computer and trans communicate ie bad electrical wiring somewhere

      @@baylenhulsey7800 my cruise would randomly shut off like the brake was being pressed that’s why I believe it was getting the wrong signals of what I was doing

    You know you have to take those valves out of that bore you just scratched all to shit. It’s a accumulator mainbody. It’s made for cushioning the fluid pressure “shifting” when the pressure engages whatever gear..
