Nanci Griffith - Late Night Grande Hotel

  • Recorded on VHS tape from the Today Show in the early 90s. This version of Late Night Grande Hotel, with James Hooker on keyboards and a simple string background, is what made me fall in love with Nanci. None of the heavy drums, repetitive and unnecessary background vocals or excessive vocal frills. Just pure Nanci!

One of the greatest singers of our generation. Saw her live twice and walked away in a cloud of emotions. Love you Nancy.

People overlook what a great singer Nanci could be. Great singing is about communicating feelings. She was a great songwriter for sure, but she could could sing straight from the soul. Like here. Wow. A heart-wrenching performance by a woman who's had her share of pain.

I agree, Nanci’s studio albums are GREAT but hearing the song and her be so vulnerable is what Nanci does best! Frank Sinatra said the Judy Garland “died a little every time she sang” and this is true for Nanci she gives all every time.

A masterpiece. Great class and elegance with a disarming simplicity and purity.
I am in love with this song from the first time I listened to it.
Nanci is cultured, refined and has an innate grace.
    Love Nanci

I had been a Nanci fan since the mid 80s, listening and singing to such songs as There's a Light Beyond These Woods, Lone Star Stat of Mind, Brave Companion of the Road, Listen to the Radio (with its Delta towns with satin gowns), Storms, Ford Econoline and, one of the best sing alongs, Sing One for Sister. When I got home from work on the day that I had slipped the VHS tape in and hit the record button before I left, the first thing I did was to fast forward the tape to find Nanci. When I played this version of this song for the first time, that was the moment I really fell in love with Nanci. While it has been a love that has been reciprocated many time since then, it has only been a love At a Distance. She has been a major part of my musical life ever since.

I have been a fan ever since she opened for Jerry Jeff at the Paramount and her Valentine's concert at the Cactus at UT.

Greg, unfortunately Nanci never came to play in Italy and I never seen her play; I think are very lucky people who saw one of her concerts.
Do you remember in which year the concert you saw was?

    • @FrancoS59
      @FrancoS59 4 роки тому

Nice story George, you've been lucky to follow Nanci for so many years. And when you see a song with this performance that you have entered, how is it possible not to fall in love ??
I tell you. Let's take the case that I knows nothing about Nanci and casually I see her with this song and this performance: but I immediately fall in love with Nanci.

Franco Semprini wish I could tell you exactly the dates...think my memory is fading...trying to get verification on that...
      I attended University of Tx...76 thru 78
      [Earl Campbell football days]
I believe she was playing in Austin at the time(Hole in the Wall) but never saw her. The Cactus opened Feb 14,1979. But that date does not ring a bell for me...That was a WED...I saw her on A Sat. and she even played the next day..but I had to work. So going back I saw her first at the Paramount...then at the Cactus....then got an autograph at the old location Waterloo Record store.[1987] where I met her Uncle Tootie.[Lone Star State of of mind]. Going back calendar wise the only Sat.in the time frame is Feb 14th 1981. And I know I saw her open For Jerry Jeff before the Valentine concert.I see a date in 1986 where Jeff and her played at Paramount but that was not the date I remember. When I come up with dates collaborating my memory I will ck back with you. So I think I saw her 1st time (79,80) time frame. During her career I saw most if not all her concerts in Austin. I think the last time [next to the last time] I saw her at the Paramount 1993 time frame[other voices album. I was saddened to here Eric Taylor [singer songwriter ] died last month Mar 9th. He was married to Nancy for a time.May he rest in peace.

The studio version is the one I found first, so I've been "imprinted" - that's the one I prefer, because it was the first. This is very, very well done, though. Admittedly, the studio version has more "fanfare" and is more "power-ballad-y"
