  • Most people will never swim 100 miles in their lifetime. But Sarah Thomas is different. She swam 104.6 miles in a single swim.
    Sarah has paved the way in ultra-marathon swimming, and currently holds the world record for the longest unassisted open water swim and the first 100-plus mile swim in current-neutral conditions. And that’s just the start of her incredible swimming resume...

    What an incredible person! I knew about her crazy 4 way English channel crossing but not about the 100 mile swim or the North channel crossings. SO amazing!!!
    Personally I find this stuff a lot more inspirational than olympians and (speed) world record holders. Don't get me wrong, they are amazing too, but they often have so much support around them, funding, nutrition e.t.c that the average person wouldn't have access too.
    Thanks for making this video on her. She totally deserves it!

    I think the longest I lasted in a cold pool was about 15 mins, then I just gave up. This was not long ago, maybe about a year and a half. But these days I just won't even tolerate swimming in cold water. I've never actually done freestyle swim in the ocean, so I can only imagine how much colder the water is. Incredible how some swimmers can do these marathons without a swim suit.

      What about her? She told a good story. Wrote a book, what she wanted to happen, didn't get her Cuba to Florida swim ratified and a Netflix film is big news. She could have followed Sarah Thomas's and most other ultra distance swims conforming to Channel rules but chose not too. At best she was the third person, second woman to make an assisted swim from Cuba to Florida

      I think the difference is open currents (current assisted) vs neutral currents (no currents). Pablo did it because of using the Gulf Stream currents to aid.

    • @swansswimmer
      @swansswimmer 16 днів тому

      That swim was current assisted.
      "In a record-setting current-positive marathon swim in the Atlantic Ocean in the Gulf Stream off the eastern coast of Florida on 19 July 2021, he swam 100 km in 11 hours 7 minutes and 7 seconds. He continued to swim and proceeded to swim 200 km in 21 hours 21 minutes and 20 seconds. He then swam further, 225 km in 23 hours 54 minutes and 19 seconds, and ultimately swam a total of 250 km in the Atlantic Ocean in 26 hours 36 minutes and 18 seconds on 19-20 July 2021"

      The reason why Pablo did not break her record was because he used the current of the Gulf Stream to cross that distance, which is kinda like a form of assistance. To achieve this record, the swimmer must not gain a net benefit from the currents. Regardless, Pablo Fernandez multiple records are also worth much praising.

      His swim was current assisted, so his swim was much easier and it only lasted 26 hours.Her swim is the longest duration at 56 hours and she had to swim against the current. Much more impressive in my opinion.
