- Hey everyone! Here is a quick tutorial of how to replace a rudder cable on a Seastream Angler 120 Kayak! Super quick and simple! I filmed this all on a GoPro Hero 8 and held it in one hand almost the entire time. I probably could have replaced the cable in half the time if I had both hands. GOOD LUCK AND TIGHT LINES!

Thanks Brother! Perfect video. Just what I needed.
Thank you! I am glad I could help!
Just finished replacing mine. Thanks for the video.
Glad it could help!
Thanks so much for this video. It’s very informative and you showed how easy it really is.
Thank you! Glad it could help
This video was helpful I used 1/16 wire from Home Depot hopefully more durable.
I have a spool of it as well from Home Depot.
I just bought this kayak and brought it out on water for first time.. and the rudder all of sudden stopped turning in one direction.. I realized the wire slipped and so I tightened it up and it still won’t turn in one direction.. the handle just don’t go that way.. any suggestions?
Wouldn't flipping those rudder bolts over, reduce the angle it's meeting the rudder from the boat, and be easier to get your allen wrench in there to tighten. Just a thought. I'm ready to purchase my first kayak, but I'm really torn between this one and the Hammerhead Whale Shark. Decisions, decisions.....
I have never heard of a kayak called the hammerhead … hmm
Is the kayak easy to stand and fish? I’m 6ft 230. Thanks for the video!
Definitely! Check out the video review I did of it on my channel. It is very stable
@@TheBassquatchHunter thank you Insure will!
When you push your rotor forward towards the seat does the boat go to the right?
It’s true to direction. Turning the handle left, goes left. Turning right goes right:)
So I was able to replace my wires but so don’t have the range of motion that I used to have. Plus the directions are not backwards. Any pointers on how to fix this?
Make sure the cables are tight in the back before tightening the bolts on the rudder. Also, make sure the handles goes back on the way it was taken off. I had the same issue on one and it was because the cables had ply in them for being loose. If this doesn’t help, shoot me a message on Facebook and I will do my best to help you out :)
Have you had to replace it since? Wondering if there's better material use for the cable.
Only one time on this kayak:) all depends on use and abuse:)
@@TheBassquatchHunter Man, I wish I hadn't bought this thing. The cable broke after a week of daily usage, I replaced it. Then the whole handle just sheared off. The kayak and drive aren't bad, but there's no way I can take this on Lake Michigan like I hoped. This steering system is just pitiful.
@@Pugsgunsandstuff sorry that happened. That is definitely frustrating. Luckily, they have amazing customer service and support. Shoot them a message and they will most likely send you whatever parts you need to get her back on the water! I gave one of my seastreams to my good buddy and he has only had to replace the rudder cables once or twice in a couple years and he beats his up a lot! Definitely not a normal part to brake at the handle.
@@TheBassquatchHunter They did, definitely good people. All turned out well anyway, got it sold to a friend who doesn't need that level of reliability and stumbled on a new bigwater 132 for 1800.
So ive ran it to a problem with my son's flash. Cables have broken twice. Shop ingot the kayak from replaced the cables and broke again. Got new cables in the kayak all set up but for some reason cant get the steering to work. Any suggestions?
Did the shop do the cables? They are extremely simple so they shouldn’t be screwed up. It is the same process as this video. If you tighten the set screws on the rudder mount for the cables too tight, they will snap right at that back bolt. I have had one rudder cable snap on the seastream in 3 seasons and the flash has been with stock cables since I got it when it first came out. Just make sure you do not over tighten the set screw at the back. Is that where it is breaking?
Also, shoot me a message on Facebook messenger on my personal account to make it easier. If you search “Mike McKinstry” you will see my profile.
Can you give some feedback on the Seastream quality? Would you recommend buying one for a first kayak?
It is a perfect first kayak for sure! It is stable, lightweight (compared to other pedal drives) and will make you want to get out more!
@@TheBassquatchHunter thank you very much!
what is the cable size?
What’s the cable size?....2.5mm?
Is it safe to assume that ALL Seastream owners will have to replace the ruddle cable at some point? Disappointing. You probably should have replaced the other cable as well. Just seems like a matter of time.
Nope. I made it clear in the video that it was user error. I over crimped the cable and caused it to be weak and I also heavily tested the kayak as a demo so I ended up starting to weaken, so I took it off and decided to share how to do it in case anyone had any questions about how to do it. How would that equate to you assuming that everyone has to replace them? I had it for quite awhile and used it heavily with the cable that I damaged myself.
I'm on my second replacement in 1 year. And I'm not over tightening...
Just bought mine, and 3rd time out it frayed and snapped off. But, I might have tightened it too much when installing.
