Music video by Chris De Burgh performing Don't Pay The Ferryman. (C) 1989 Mercury Records Limited
Greek mythology requires upon death the crossing of the river Styx upon the ferry operated by the ferryman Charon in order to enter the afterlife. Failure to successfully cross means your soul would roam the shores, haunting the living until granted rest in Hades. Waiting to pay the ferryman until getting to the other side is to guarantee passage to the afterlife. What a vivid story of that passage
Chris De Burgh had some of the best songs of the 80s. Underrated
Chris De Burgh. So underrated, but a bloody LEGEND ❤
I lost my father 20 years ago. In his funeral, i put in his coffin a coin of 2 euros. Althought in Greece we are christians orthodox and not believing in dodecatheon any more, we follow these traditions.
I wanted to pay the Charon the ferryman, to cross the Acheron river to the Ades underworld
Wonderfull this respect !!!
Bless you fren, sorry for your lost.
lets hope he remembers this song and does not pay until he is over to the other side!
I'm 38, my father played this for me when I was a child, still gives me the same chills did when I first heard it. I feel like there is a 7 hour epic TV saga that could be based on this. After 2000+ listens It still gets to me. Strap one up and disappear into this for a bit... Fucking brilliant.
I'm 51, dont worry I like this song but when I was a young kid I would listen song on the radio a singer named Sir' Cliff Richard & he had a song out called Devil Woman and after each time I would hear this song i would think there was a scary Woman up top of hill where I use to lived when I was a kid growing up.
.
Chills????? I’d say the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when you hear
Put em under pressure if that’s the case
I get that feeling mate. Put it well
I’m 38. And my father played this for me when I was a child. And.. well you already said it
Yeah, but Charon‘s price is mandatory… 😩😩😩
I grew up with Chris De Burg music in Iran, it was the only music that kept me going.
Music was the only thing that kept anybody going back then. But I believe you: Probably even more in Iran.
Same my guy, in iran also! I was a 5yrs old when my uncle (20 at the time) gave me his cassette and I fell in love w music since then.
You need epic music just to put up with living in Iran.
Where do you live now?
Jesus what an unbelievable voice, completely forgotten.
From the decade of brilliance.
A superb song.
This song is a timeless epic!
Enough said 👍
True true
U have said straight facts! :)
Definitely 👍
Chris de Burgh is great
I was 16 when this song rocked my world way back in 1982 and happy to say ive been pumping it loud for 40 years on cassette tape, CD, mp3 and now youtube, im now 56 and it still rocks my world, thanks Mr Ferryman.
Me too. Loved it at the age of 16 and still loving it at the age of 53.
My wife and I each have a One Penny coin dated the year of our birth (1953) - one is English, one is Australian and when we pass over, it will be included with our ashes so we can pay the Ferryman and we will follow the advice to pay when we get to the other side.....
Oh man... there are soooo many great songs out there, and i know most of them, i'm sure. But that doesn't mean a thing, if i don't remember them so i can look them up. Even this song, i heard it on the radio today and recognized it. But if i had never heard it again, it would've been "lost" to me forever... if that makes sense
There are songs like this that you enjoy every single word, every single music instrument, every second of the video. And you cant get enough although the years pass by. This is a pure masterpiece. A timeless classic!
The forward to the book "The old man and the sea" says, "No single word in this book could be changed to make this story better" I often think that when I hear this song.
@@jimmywrangles it's not about "The old man and the sea" it's about the belief that placing coins over the eyes of the deceased allows them to pay the ferryman for their journey to heaven/ a better place.
"Don't Pay The Ferryman"
It was late at night on the open road,
Speeding like a man on the run,
A lifetime spent preparing for the journey;
He is closer now and the search is on,
Reading from a map in the mind,
Yes there's the ragged hill,
And there's the boat on the river. And when the rain came down,
He heard a wild dog howl,
There were voices in the night - "Don't do it!"
Voices out of sight - "Don't do it!
Too many men have failed before,
Whatever you do,
Don't pay the ferryman,
Don't even fix a price,
Don't pay the ferryman,
Until he gets you to the other side;" In the rolling mist, then he gets on board,
Now there'll be no turning back,
Beware that hooded old man at the rudder,
And then the lightning flashed, and the thunder roared,
And people calling out his name,
And dancing bones that jabbered and a-moaned
On the water. And then the ferryman said,
"There is trouble ahead,
So you must pay me now," - "Don't do it!"
"You must pay me now," - "Don't do it!"
And still that voice came from beyond,
"Whatever you do,
Don't pay the ferryman,
Don't even fix a price,
Don't pay the ferryman,
Until he gets you to the other side;
Don't pay - the ferryman!"
From behind, WHATEVER YOU DO!!!!!
what? what do you mean?
+1946 1946 I was saying the next line.....
Ben Džeymar FC aha, i got it.
Brilliant writing
Fantastic artist, the best storytelling song writer there as ever been, brilliant song,he is so much more than lady in red.
Wow
His Voice...
That damned voice...
I'd like to hear the chorus w/o the effects, but i bet i'd be blown away anyways. :)
"Don't pay the ferryman, don't even fix a price" - try popping over to the Isle of Wight with that attitude! Love this song :)
I used this theory on our local Brisbane ferry, the Citycat. I was subsequently kicked off the ferry. Unfortunately, this song does not provide good advice for the modern way of life !!
JuanDinger265 well you pay your taxes beforehand too... and when you get old and need pension they treat you like trash...
the fact that this is accepted today doesn't make it any right... life is though, but try to enjoy - it is the only one you get :)
Pisser... i spat my bourbon while reading this comment, top marks mate
lol, it aint cheap.
JuanDinger265
Lol x
lol mate
Forty years ago, music fans were told "Don't Pay The Ferryman"! Words hold true even to this day in 2023!
So true
Another fabulous ‘story song’ from a great artist. I might play this next time I am on the Shields Ferry crossing the Tyne and only pay when I get off. “You must pay me now (Don’t do it)”.
Ha ha !!
Why have I just found this absolute gem! WOW!
Love this man's voice and his talent for creating stories is amazing!
WHAT.???!!!!...Get n your Ferry..your grading........ 1.5/10.Very Poor!
I currently so obsessed with this song again ^^ it's just too damn good
So am I , heard it on the radio a couple of months back got hooked on it again, Great song.
Yep its a belter, nearly 40 years old as well !
Great tune and lyrics. Truly underappreciated artist. One of my favourites from 80's. Absolute classic.
he had a few cracking songs in the day
One of the best songs EVER,never on the radio anymore
I can just about remember when this song was released in September '82
I instantly liked it ❤❤🎉🎉
Who could dislike this song seriously 😊
I was 4 years old when Chris de burgh released this in 1982
Chris de burgh
A singing and songwriting genius
Superb song 🎵 👌 👏 ❤️
Funny how songs have good n bad memories well this 1 takes me back 2 the early 80s when my high school crush played it thank u n much love from Australia 🇦🇺 X🇧🇪
Crossing the Styx river with Charon, the ferryman. Hades and the Underworld is on the other side. Greek mythology.
One of my favourite tunes ever...what a voice Chris has 💚
,,Don't pay the ferryman
Until he gets you to the other side"
❤
Completely addicted to this song ever since I first heard it a few weeks ago... This hadn't happened for a long time now, feels rejuvenating!
When i was young, i was obsessed by Chris De Burgh and his songs. I gave myself a promise that sometime i will enjoy those songs in live performance, but i never did.I am very sorry about this, but i keep hoping !!!
RESPECT ! 👏 Merci.
A fantastic song. Can't hear it without singing along.
Omg same! 😂
Don't do it! 😀
I was about sixteen the first time i heard this song and thirty years later it's still one of my favourites. Epic voice
Chris de Burg is a true talent up there with the very best his voice is a testament to his greatness btw Don't pay the dude...Forget the price you need to reach your journey before you negotiate.. Awesome share!
who can say "no" to a song like this one? Chris ROCKS here like never before.....
Immense song.chris at his best.
Spanish train will always be unforgettable to me......reminds me of coming home from nursery...mum on her knitting machine.......this banging out of her stereo .....love you mum.......miss you even more
O love this song. I actually got to see a multimedia adaptation of this song in 2005, with a large array of computer-controlled slide projectors playing individual still-frame 35mm slides in such rapid succession that it looked like an animated film.
Still better then anything written now
Chris de Burgh. I miss him.
Loved seeing and hearing him sing this in concert
yes, Chris is now 50 years a legend! So I produced a tribute song with lyrics combinated from several if his song titles. Look for "Tribute to Chris de Burgh" on UA-cam or your favorite streaming service in a few days! Thanks Chris for all!
Man, i remember well back then. This was the first song I knew from that guy that so many "cool" Kids laughed About. It was sometimes not so easy being a fan of Chris. But it was worth it. So many years now. I am not only a fan of him but he Always had a place not only in my Cd and LP racks, but also - I am not to "cool" to say it Deep in my heart.
O wait shit I lost track of time... 2 hours straight listening to this I know all the lyrics and I LOVE IT!! BEST SONG EVER!! u rock Chris De Burgh!
used to listern to CDB cassette on the walkman as a kid in the car on the journey when going on holiday to France. Always remember this song coming on when boarding the ferry across!
Neplať převozníkovi, píseň mého mládí. Moc děkuji.
If, like me, you were somewhat perplexed by the boats name: CHARON in Peter Brooks cartoon The Times Newspaper TODAY of the Grim Reaper coming for Sunak and his Cabinet; it actually derives from Greek Mythology where the Ferryman (Grim Reaper) who brought the Souls of the (politically) dead across the River Styx, or the River Acheron to Hedes which THEN instantly connected with me on Chris de Burgh's song 'Don't Pay The Ferryman" which NOW has TRUE meaning. I'm a big fan of Chris de Burgh as was Princess Diana and I have four of his CD's/LP's in my collection
Don't pay the ferryman a wonderful song as good it is for the 1980 thank you sharing it
I used to listen to this in my bedroom chilling and my my mum used to pop in and check on me when I was playing this album on my cassette tape I love this song and and miss you so much mum thanks for looking out for me ❤❤
this is a very chilling song to this day😧
Had not been a fan of CDB!🤫 My brother in-law and sister loved his stuff - i couldn't see it? Then this ... and I thought that's pretty good....! Many years later I realised that it was produced by one of the greatest of all time - Rupert Hine! And - wow can you hear his influence! So CDB - all power to you - great voice. But - put that with the amazing RH - and ... well it's a yes from me!!😂
Fantastischer Text. ❤
Chris de Burgh hat diesen Song fürs neue Musical "Robin Hood" adaptiert :) Heißt "Freiheit für Nottingham".
Don't pay the ferryman 1980 song is as wonderful it was thank you sharing this song
This song is genius, I love it. This song inspired me to become a lover of mythology and the occult and all things supernatural. No, I don't believe in magic, Im a skeptic, but I have spent decades studying it; it's a fascinating insight into human nature.
Chris de Burgh has a inborn quality to create an atmosphere of exciting mystery, suspension and passion!
This was my dads tape, every time we went in that old Carina it went on! Memories
His best song.
Always been one of my favourite songs remember hearing it as a child and am 38 now
I heard it life 1 week before. It's still such a great song
Banging tune ❤
I think Chris De Burgh is the best.
One of Chris many amazing songs. Sad that the majority of people know him for just the Lady in Red, whereas he has recorded some corking rock tracks
I agree. Lady in red is probably the least favourite of the many songs from Deburgh.
I prefer his older stuff like this and the traveller eastern wind is a great album
Well said
@@davidcampbell2032 me too.
Crusader is another of his greatest.
My first ever heard song of CdeB in the early 80ies - and it infected me (well, quite an unapropriate word nowadays but it WAS that way) immediately. It was simply his voice - and the music was very different to all I had been listering to until then. The first albums were bought by my parents who had been fans in the first time too but not as deep as I was. By the time, I became the greatest CdeB fan in my family and went to several concerts of him in the 90ies and 2000s, when I was old enough to do so on my own. My first concert was on my 13th birthday in Dortmund (1987).
Used to play this song a lot in Zimbabwe🇿🇼🇿🇼when I was so young.over and over
Have taught my 10 year old this song!
This song is just fucking timeless, I'm so glad my dad introduced us to this when me and all my brothers and sisters when we were kids because we'll pass it down ourselves.
The Ferryman on the River Styx in the Underworld in Greek mythology.
what a powerfull voice he has love it
Ein echter Klassiker. Sowas gibt's heute nicht mehr
This is one of the best songs ever.
Epic ferryman story
Of his best Album the Getaway 1982
HIGH ON EMOTION!
I can never listen to this just once.. truly underrated.
Chris has had some classic songs I mean listen to this song and that voice it’s one of the most recognisable voices as soon as you hear it you know who it is, I mean yeah he wrote some classic power ballads and of course the “The Lady In Red” now that’s a classic love song apparently he wrote it about his wife, He is one of my favourite artists of the 80s
From Ireland to Ireland...
Our best ever singer songwriter...cheers Chris!!
One of the best by Chris, Very well done sir.
Ein super Lied von Chris.
This man's music is fantastic.
So glad I've found it

Absolutely in love with this song & Chris has the most amazing vocals & the instrumentals are phenomenal...
Timeless
Best time of my life when i was listening to this song 🎵 ❤
2021 and I’m still listening to it
Im from dublin and a mate of mine worked in a pub called the ferryman I asked him to play this song.o
Obviously i was refused.
Sneaky bastard. Of course they refused.
ha ha
When i was little, my dad used to play me his songs and translate them for me (I’m Swedish) and all of his songs my dad played for me I would think of as him telling me stories, and those stories were my favorites. His songs makes me so nostalgic in the best way possible
2020 still listening for ever
What a masterpiece!
Many memories!🥰
Fire song!
Legend ❤
