Why anyone wastes money on computer parts is beyond me...
First of all, RAM is downloadable
A Potato works great as a power supply
Not to mention a potato processor is the most powerful and has integrated graphics stronger than the GTX Titan X
+BoilingHotCoffee I bought RAM once and it infected my Chrome bookmarks with links to porn websites. Now I download all my RAM online. It's much safer and my computer now runs at 17 hyperwatts
My downloadable monitor has a 69k resolution and 0.00000000001 nanosecond response time. It also has a 1738 gigahertz refresh rate.
Go download a pc
+BoilingHotCoffee I got 128 RAM with Cheat Engine! I can run GTA 3 on medium settings! Lags only when there are alot of cars. xD
I run my pc on a 135,000w Tasla supercharger, works fine.
I run mine on nuclear fusion
I use charcoal
tsuzukadesu omg dude thats like so 2017 get with the times
I run my on a nuclear reactor I built with components from smoke detectors
I run it on potatoes
I run my raspberry pi on a 1600 watt power supply
LOL! If I rectified and stored all the ESD that my ESD workstation dissipates, it could run a pi when I'm actively using it.
Not impressed, I run my Arduino from my nuclear reactors' 15 gW transformator station.
Wow, you're so outdated. I run mine at 15 Tera watts.
And I run at 12 NKNAWatts
No Known Number Amount Watts.
It's insanely much
i run mine from lemon juice
my PSU saved my home... when everything on fire my PSU explode and make a lot of smoke that turn off all the fire
This isnt csgo smoke dosent put out fire
It can...
Wtf?
WTF
Chrome r/wooosh
u scare me i dont want a power supply anymore i dont even want my pc anymore :'( my house will burn down
xD
hum that's actually a good observation.... here I wonder if some would resort to hanging the pc tower as if it was an air conditioning unit (bolted on a window frame)
Ask for help, I'm relatively non toxic. If you follow my advice to the letter, your house won't burn down, and there are tons of people who could say the same thing.
Thats why I always have fire extinguisher near my pc :)
Parking a Ford in your garage is a bigger fire hazard than any PC I've seen.
Soo the PSU calculator says I need an Arc Reactor.
-Was messing around with it.
Discord? You seem nice.
Same here
Ok just bought a ark reactor cost like 1m dollars but it was worth it i can run so much rgb which increases the fps so much like minecraft at 8000000 fps
Eww stolen joke
@@mylifeonthepeninsula9521 now all you need is a vacuum transistor monitor with a 460 GHz refresh rate to be able to play your competitive brony shoot em ups
The first 30 seconds is a rare insight into Linus' married life
its fuking amazing that after thousands of year we have men in space and recreate reality in electrical signals, yet we still don't understand women.
lmao true
i'm sure that there will be an equation to it
Epix Cole hand the man a beer when he cracks it, and a nobel prize while you're at it :)
***** uh huh. sure you do.

my girlfriends stress relief candles would most likely burn down my house before my power supply does
Does she need the candels because of you?
😂
Stress relief candles burning down your house. Thats ironic.
@@joeryan1514 You won't be stressed if you're dead.

I don't know if I watch your channel to learn or for fun. Maybe a little bit of both.
The thought of a PSU blowing out at any moment and taking your whole system with it is just terrifying. It's like suddenly losing your car, home, and most of your personal belongings at once.
And yes, my computer is like a second home to me, that I built with my own two hands. Losing it would be like watching my cozy log cabin in the woods go down in flames.
mcgibs It happened to my first computer, when i connected power into the power supply, but that computer is 15 years old now.
mcgibs technally its more like suddenly losing your cars engine..
Kent Madsen Best case scenario is just losing one part. Frying your motherboard and who knows what else is still a possibility.

I'm new to the PC building world and I've found your videos incredibly helpful. I have also become a user of your forum. Thanks so much!
**plugs in potato** **Turns on** "Huh guess he was wrong afte.." **BOOM**
The other day i saw a PC one of my friends built about 4 years ago. It had an i7 2700 and a MSI gtx 660ti, both of which were powered by a Vorago "500W" PSU, and even worse, since this sketchy PSU didn't have any PCIe power connections the GPU was powered by a 2 molex to 6pin PCIe adapter but only one molex cable was connected, since the only other one it had was connected to the hard drive.
I was amazed that the thing turned on, and even more when I realized that it hadn't blown up in 4 years.
This friend just told me that he had his ram die in this system....twice....
And then i asked him why he hadn't bought a new PSU, and he told me "because it is too expensive", but we all know that three sets of 8GB of RAM are more expensive than one decent PSU...
I told him to get a $60 Corsair CX550M, but nope, too expensive.
I am gonna get a Corsair CX650M
MultiJeje12345 the good ones are the ones with the gray sticker on the side. Don't get one that has a green sticker.
ElZamo92 okiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii... care to explain?
Linus is really enjoying himself with these Tech quickies lately. I like it.
I had an unbranded PSU before which exploded when I launched GTA 5
Serious?
Lmao
Cool. I'm waiting and trying my hardest to blow up my factory optiplex 7010 dt power supply but it hasn't yet.

The video is very old but the topic is certainly always up to date. That's how I wanted to know. I have an i7 6700 stock, Intel cooler, 32 GB Ram, 4 fans, 2 SSD, 1 HD and a GTX 1070.
The PSU Calculator does a good job. He comes to 358 watts. My measurement showed when playing: a little under 300 watts and in normal operation about 90 watts. So my 500 watt PSU fits.

10 years later this video still holds up surprisingly well. Impressive
(CPU's TDP + GPU's TDP)*2 +100W = amount of Watts needed
TDPs can be found using a search engine
100W is for potential accessories
I got a 700w psu when I built my first rig. I Didn't realize that I didn't need that much power.
+Mat7hew_ I bought a 2000W on my first build because I was too lazy to learn how to choose one so I went with the biggest I could find... and my build didn't even hit 300W.

I've been using the same 650w BFG power supply since 2006 lol... this things been a champ. the companies been out of business for years and it still runs without a hitch. It's gone through basically 3 complete computers since I've upgraded plenty since I got it. It was originally bought for a dual core athlon x2 and is now running an i7-4930k. better safe than sorry... i use a PSU twice the watts needed, and an UPS to keep it safe from surges and line noise. it runs cool, helps cooldown the inside of the case and keeps the rest of the pc safe and solid
i hope PSU will start to come with internal usb com to monitor it's health (voltage values, fan rpm, voltage intake, etc) that would be awersome to see in windows
Dario Ampuy Your wasting power mate
I believe that you're pulling the wattage that your computer needs.

This was a very good video. I liked how you gave us a source to be able to find the appropriate amount of watts we should be purchasing for a power supply. I’m just building my first PC and I have to say I’m very satisfied with the build and I’m glad I found this video to help guide me to the right one
Bro You don't know how much of a fan i'm . i want to thank you for the last 4 years!
all your advise and knowledge
What PSU Should I get?
CPU: Intel Pentium II @ 233 MHz (maybe overclocking to 5 GHz wth some fancy liquid nitrogen)
GPU: S3 VIRGE-SX/GX PCI (375/385)
RAM: 128 MB
HDD: 3GB
Motherboard: I have no idea, let's see what I find in my attic
Cooler: attic time!
I would recommend a potato, as Linus has shown in the video. Any type should do, but I prefer Idaho potatoes. They also make excellent fries.
Evyatar Ziv Intel Pentium II best gaming processor!
a rock might be overkill try a hydrogen isotope that should be more than enough
Can some also help here too, what PSU do i need for this build uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/yt27Hx
relentless5321 I would go with a 600Watt PSU, but you should rather go with a 700 or 750 Watt PSU, if your planning to do some overclocking and or Want another graphics card.
you should've discussed efficiency rating
Thanks Linus, that link amazed me, I have a gaming PC and the Recommended PSU Wattage: 374 W! I have a 400 watt power supply so I am just making it but dont have to sweat it so much anymore till I upgrade. I must have the most eco friendly gaming system ever... crazy..

I bought a power supply named "Power Supply 700W" for like 25 bucks. Very legit
Seems legit.
can it get anymore legit?
sajid hossain Only if the 12v rail has lower A than the 5v.
Why would you buy over rated crap?
Got a cheap £20 850W PSU and it ran fine with a 200W system until I upgraded it and it blew up when I started to play Crysis 2, I bought a £35 600W Silver Power True and it's great!
I would never put a £20 power supply in my system. People don't realize that a power supply is probably the most important component in your computer system. Buy cheap, buy twice as the saying goes.
I wouldn't of really considered it but I'm poor and it was only going in a really low power system that had a 5750 and a core2 duo. which I have since upgraded.

A single gpu never needs more than 750w and that figure has a 20%safety margin built in. Your problem is much more likely to be a quality issue. Buy the best quality psu that you can , most of the manufacturers have a range of psu's, go with a higher end psu from a reputable manufacturer( such as Seasonic) and you'll be fine.
1000w power supply? for what, an iron man suit?
1:52 Ow..owow, my ears. No offense to you Linus from six years ago but you really have come a long way. Love your vids!

My CoolerMaster M700 PSU is still working after 7 years.
CM GX550 here, still going well after 5 years. I have another one that has gone 4 years too. They are really great, quiet PSUs.
Back when I did not know much about PCs, I had a CoolerMaster eXtreme Power Plus, rated at 390W. When I discovered it could not output that power, and was a crap unit, I completely lost trust in them.
What I want to say is, they don't always make good products, even if they have some of the best PSUs on the market.

that cooler master website is the hecking best! I highly recommend using it! Don't think cooler master is trying to sell you their power supplies because they really aren't!
if you don't know always go default 650 , if your planing on going with isolated liquid cooling go with the 850 supernova, if its Custom pump system you will need the calculator for sure.
i always go sightly above what my pc needs. currently my pc uses around 450w but i went for a 650w psu just in case in the future i decided to upgrade my GPU then i dont need to worry to much about upgrading my power supply.
that's a lot, a 500w should be enough for most upgrades unless you're gonna get a dual gpu in the future

One time I thought it was a good idea to use a room fan on a computer to cool it down. It worked unsurprisingly. Also I used a coffee filter on a case fan to prevent dust from entering.
I hate how every one of these videos is an ad for CoolerMaster...
Not really, he adds it at the end because and never oversells their stuff: CoolerMaster is a solid brand that happens to sponsor Linus and there for help keep this show alive. So I don't care if he adds a small advertisement for them at the end of the video and if you don't like it, you have the perfectly fair choice of not watching it even if it is as stupid as a reason as this.

Actually, the name is "be quiet!"
Just got my hands on an old crappy tower-pc from '02. Disassembled it and then reassembled it and it's still working, now I really feel confident about building my own gaming pc in the future :)
I have a Ryzen 2700x and a GTX 960 FTW, Corsair Vengeance 2x8 GB RAM, and a SanDisk Plus 1 TB SSD. I frequently run rendering tasks that only work on CPU, utilizing 15 threads, and leave one thread open for my usual 20 Chrome tabs, several videos, and several 3D/art programs.
450 watts works just fine.
PSUs operate best at half-load. A supply rated with a sustained load of 1000 Watts performs best outputting 500 watts. Since your PC usage scales up and down between idling and full throttle on rendering, your best bet is to make sure your PSU is just a bit above the max load. For most gaming PCs, 400 watts is in the sweet spot. 500-600 if you're using the highest end GPUs. If you use a 750 watt PSU and you're only running one CPU and one GPU... please don't.
I run my PC on EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G+, 80 Plus Gold.
Sometimes i open up my case to check if it is still there because it is too quiet.
I just bought an EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G3, 80 Plus Gold... doing custom mod cable replacements, so I needed fully modular, and I love the eco mode... doesn't even run the fan unless it needs to.
May be fan doesnt start!
No explaination on 80plus certification and efficiency?
It was sponsored by Coolermaster... they don't really care about certification either.
Linus thanks for the calculator tip! I've serviced hundreds of pc's and just always recommended to buy a "branded" PSU. 12 years later decided to google it.
My computer has a freezing issue while playing games, or before the games even start up. This usually only occurs on more graphics intense games like GTA V, or Battlefield, etc. The freezing stops everything, even sound, and can only be fixed by performing a force shutdown. What I did notice was that the PSU was pretty hot and that it only had 430w. I presume this is a problem with the PSU?

Thats fine, but in the future with upgrades you will have to push to a 600-750
500w for a 290 is pretty low. At least go with a 600w one, just to be safe.
Get a higher rated PSU. get something around 600-700W. I'd suggest Seasonic S-12II series Corsair (Preferably CS over CX) or FSP Aurum 700W. To be honest though I wouldn't go with a r9 290 in the first place. The card runs very hot and eats a lot of power. You can get a GTX 970 for a similar price. It has better performance and requires less beefy PSU.

Wonderful intro! LOL!! I really enjoy and appreciate the LTT team videos and recommendations; I always learn something. Thx guys!!
The bit at the start made me chuckle...
Hahaha when Linus goes to work stressed from home.
Consider this guys: Power in Watts = Volts * Amperes. Because the Volts your PSU must output are fixed by the ATX standard (12, 5, 3.3 and -12), that leaves you with the amount of Amperes a given powersupply can deliver. Now 1 Ampere is 1 Coulomb per second, a Coloumb being a unit of charge and therefore a certain (very high...) quantity of electrons. Thus, the only difference between power supplies with high and low wattages is how many amperes, how many coulombs per second they can deliver *at most*. In other words, how good of a charge pump they are. A powersupply is basically a equivalent to a water pump, only it pumps electrons through wires, not water through hoses. Furthermore, the pump is controlled to always run as strong as required to maintain a certain fixed pressure (the voltage). If your powersupply is too weak, that is, if your components demand too much power (they let too much charge per second flowing through them at constant pressure) and your pump cannot keep up, the pressure (voltage) drops.
Note that the powersupply cannot deliver the same amount of charge at each "pressure level" (voltage rail), thus you cannot expect to be able use your 1000 W PSU's -12 V cable as a 1000/12 A backwards charge pump ("lab power supply"). The amount of charge, of amperes, available on each rail is probably proportionate to the amount of cables of that color. Any given cable thickness can only carry so many amperes before melting... Not to mention the PSU will not be able to put all its 1000/12 Amperes on any single one of its yellow wires, only on all of them together. You need to distribute the amperes to different cables. That's why it's better to run two cables from your PSU to the two power connectors on your GPU, instead of using one of those Y-adapters or double ended connectors.
