but i need to work on my PSU cus it ain't got long enough cables...
Hey its my job i can do that!!! but i still will turn it off and get it out of da case...

I'm building a PC for the first time and just when I think I've got it all figured out a question arises. I google it and there's Linus! Your videos are so appreciated Linus and Co. You answer everything I need and save me a ton of time from reading through forums. Thank you!
so, 5 months since this comment.
How is your PC and what does it have?
Lucky you I just built my computer and forgot about the fact that you cant get custom cables without a modular cable. Rip me :D

I was literally thinking the same
But fully and semi modular do COME WITH all of the cables in the box, right? There are just not (or not all) connected?
yes
(3 years later) How has your PC build been?

Great video Linus. Basically, semi-modular and fully-modular PS's are for enthusiasts who prioritize aesthetics and a seemingly minimal boost in airflow. Non-modular PS's are 100% ideal for a budget rig like the secondary one I just built

I noticed that as well.
LOL . thanks xD

LethalClips It's not about the length. It's also about the girth :p
No offense, but the ONLY power supply that has died on me in all the years I've built PCs was, in fact, a Cooler Master. They make great cases for the price though.
I have one, Coolermaster Thunder 700watt. I have It running a gtx 780 and it works amazingly. No problems.
Maybe yours was just faulty in a batch of 100'000. Anyways you get what i mean and personally i dont own a coolermaster PSU. I have a 685 orion and it works just fine.
There is a CM PSU running in my dad's system now..... It's been running nearly 24/7 for the last 9 years, only downtime was to fix broken parts and clean it.... Never had a problem with the PSU though.
Cooler master actually makes a really good PSU!
The thing to note is they don't actually make PSU's, and the same goes for many others like Corsair and XFX. Seasonic made most of CM's recent units, such as the V series, and those have been fantastic.
once you go Modular you cant go back.
I love eating bugs, as long as they come from the ocean... and are called lobster or shrimp.
Bugs from the ditch are fine too if they're called crawfish
Haven't built a PC in many years, and was confused by the description of "modular" on the power supplies I was shopping for. Had absolutely no idea what "modular" meant. Kids of today have things so easy! Back in my day the cables were all attached, and we LIKED it. Thanks for the knowledge.
After the sad story about the public swimming pool I actually watched the ad...
"Why compromise performance for aesthetics when you can do both?"
I see what you did there, Linus.

Fully modular is easily the best and worth your money. If your power supply ever fails just unplug the cables and put the new one and and reattach the cables. If a cable fails or needs to be replaced just swap it out with another cord

for a PSU newbie like me, many thanks for the awesome video mate!
Finally, a good ads transition. Thank you Linus and Cooler Master. I will gladly watch any ads if they are presented like this.
Easily the most entertaining tech youtuber out there. Linus, y u so funny.
hi
Love me some Fully Modular PSUs. Corsair RM series has some pretty nice modular cables.
I have the RM750! Really nice cables!
I agree. I am not too big on the colorful braided ones. I like keeping my cables in the background and the flat black ones that come with the RM series are really nice. That and Corsair makes excellent products.
I feel like the chroma-keying is a bit off today... I can see distinct outlines around the left arm.
Also lighting is a little off towards the corners - when he was moved to the left of the video, there was a noticeable shadow that was cut off about 2/3 along the bottom
Xeon927 Who gives a fuck?
I agree.
ryan smith i do^^
ryan smith When you work with cinematography a bit, you learn to see these things. I'm not saying that Linus Media Group are terrible because they didn't pick up one small mistake - it was just an observation. If they fix it, that's great. If they don't, it's not the end of the world. What's you your ass?
I'm glad I picked up a modular when i was thinking about using my non-modular in my new build. Airflow is up, and helps keep the room cool, and does look good.
I actually used 70% of the cables included with my Corsair RM750 power supply!
Oh, and finally you advertised a good company (I mean other that HotSpot shield!). Corsair is a good company for PSUs!
How is ur RM750 running, because I am also thinking of getting that psu, but I have heard that apparently it can get very loud at certain points?
Geeker Its dead silent, I find the complaints are mainly from people putting it under load. Its not loud under load, its just louder than when under a low load since the fan doesn't even spin at low power, and spins up at high, obviously making it a stark contrast. But to be fair, in my rig atleast, when its under load the GPU far outweighs the PSU noise.
Geeker i have one and dont think its very loud i never heard it actualy and the rest of my system is also very quiet. and i only use 3 cables at my psu until i get a gpu though
Geeker
I cannot tell it is on! My Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler is louder! It is a solid, powerful PSU! I cannot even hear it when I render using Sony Vegas Pro 13!
ok, thank you for reassuring me. Will surely get this this psu for my rig.
I really like the way you did the advertising for CM in this video. Having it at the end is really much better than in the beginning.

Thinking to get a 850 watt semi-modular PSU so I have some "future proofing" if I want to SLI in the future or just overclock my current system. It is a bit overkill for an i5 and a gtx 970 but I plan to upgrade in the near future and will want to keep as many components as possible possibly minus my case, gpu, and psu, and mobo etc.
i've got a colermaster 750w semi modular power supply and are extremely happy with it:)

My concern was always the projected lifespan of the PSU, but I guess that concern is negated as long as you're not getting real cheap ones. The first PSU I ever bought was modular, and I absolutely love it because there's not commonly an overabundance of room in computer cases to stash unused cables.
Is that a Pebble, Linus? How do you like wasting $150+? I got to hack one of those and I must say, it's an Alpha-level project. They shouldn't even be selling them yet cuz they do suck quite a bit

don't eat bugs linus. that's not a nice thing to do. maybe you should eat glitches.

Linus Eats Bugs As Fast As Possible #ndintro
Hey, thanks. I was hung up on whether to buy modular or non modular! Now, I'm gonna buy semi modular. ☺
+Nostro200 , well, no one near me is dying. I'd help them if they are in need.
Damn, you are an effing stereotype.
+Nostro200 ... I'm not in Europe, you idiot, I'm staying in India. I can't get what your problem is.
+Bavani Sankar don't mind the elderly white men, they tend to lose their intelligence
Luis Ramirez thnx Luis Ramirez! 😁
+Nostro200 that cry baby lol is over 900000
Another good thing about fully modular is if one of the cables breaks it can easily be replaced instead of buying a new power supply.
why is "all japanese capacitors" a good thing i dont get it. . .. . what am i missing
japanese commitment to standerds, and the impression that u get, just like asian are `smart'
+elandre van wyk Japanese standards for capacitors are higher because a failed capacitor is a fire-hazard, and Japan is super prone to flash-fires due to the compact nature of their cities.
+Alvis Gwa lol stereotype
Nichicon, Nippon Chemicon, Panasonic and Rubycon are considered 4 of the best capacitor manufacturers in the world. They are all based in Japan.
Samuel Doye Nippon Chemicon is used A LOT. Rubycon I don't see that often.
I appreciate that you guys shout out other channels that are competitors because they make quality videos. well done guys it's nice to see people who made it help other people make it

124 bugs XD
Ajani Amedee 125 bugs

127, yes ofcourse... duuh!
Fully modular is also really helpful if you want to run your system on two power supplies, which is fairly common in SLI setups.
Bugs are a delicacy some places, you'd like a few. Eat them! :3
I just got a In Win 650 Watt 80+ Gold fully modular power supply. It works great! If one of the cables goes bad some way, I just order another one.
I like Modular PSU's they just get the job done although I do prefer Seasonic
So does that mean you really, really like modular Seasonic PSUs?
Yeah Reliability wise it hasn't let me down yet
Corsair psus are re branded seasonic psu's..
randomname Not all of them, most are Channel Well. AXi are flextronics... I think only the AX series and something else are Seasonic.
Sangeet Khatri none of the RM are Seasonic. 450, 550, 650 and 1000w are CWT and the others are Chicony.
The video that we really need is one explaining 12V rails and how many we really need. There are a lot of people out there who think that all PSUs must have at least 2 rails or they're crap and will die or blow up within a year and don't understand that, while having 2+ rails is usually good, it's not always worth the extra cost unless you are sure that you have the money to spare and that all of the rails are strong.
Please do an episode about sata ans sas please
This reminds me on something. who the hell uses eSATA? I have never seen it be used for anything haha!

I just upgraded my power supply to get a GTX 760, and I had got a CX500 by Corsair, and a msi GTX 760. Totally wroth it, and I've never upgraded a PC before, my first time. Thanks to linus build guides I did it without the manual... because there wasn't any.
This nigga dabbed in 2014 wtf! 3:53
He never even dabbed.
I like Cooler Master, I got myself a CPU fan from that brand, and it still works like a charm after 3 years of use.
EAT THE BUGS EAT THE BUG EAT THE BUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!
one thing linus did not mention about the "fully" modular power supplys is that it is easier to rout your cables from the component to the power supply so it speeds up installation.
WHY IS MODULAR SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE????????????????
rapper250 Semi modular isn't all that expensive but fully modular is
they are not, you can get a 80+ bronze for $40 thats fully modular, but if you want a better one it will cost more
+VideoGameCollecting101 and what brand is that? its not one you should trust
northern marine actually i got a cooler master one thats fully modular 80+ gold for $65, i got another one from someone else for $40 which is fully modular and 80+ bronze and it worked really well, i had it for about 10 months until i built a new pc and sold my old one to a friend for 1100
+VideoGameCollecting101 v650?
so what's wrong with cutting off the unnecessary cables?
what was that about me?
I have a Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 800W Semi-Modular PSU that I got to chose thanks to your videos Linus!
way won't you eat bugs ther a very good sorce of protien and low on fat
+Edison Trent yum
this was quite informative for me! much appreciated. I'll be checking out other videos on this channel. building my first pc (long time coming) and I had been debating on the power supply.

RM 850 here, its fully modular and I really like it! Saves loads of space. However this thing is small, not really long at all :?
Yes little subtitle at 2:21, that is indeed true.
I have built 2 pcs so far I have learned 2 main things. Dont cheap out on a case and the power supply Next time im going to buy a mould one but the case this time I used was really good
EAT THE BUGS! !
There is one other benefit to modular style supplies. A lot of them have a set number of outputs, but you can pick the other end of the connector you need. For instance, if you only have SATA drives and nothing that uses a 4 pin molex, you can just use modular cables with SATA ends instead of adapters to convert molex pins to SATA style. It's not just about being clean, it's about being able to pick the connectors you need most.
Lol bottom right 2:19
i got a smart 750w semi-modular in my build, it is overkill, but i dont regret it, cable management was a breeze and everything works wonderfully.
power supplies are really important, and going from a cheap-generic one to a mid-high range psu just feels great
I'm building my first pc and just ordered a Corsair cxm750 semi-modular psu, hopefully it works fine.
You missed the fact that non modular cables are like super ugly rainbows
+chickennuggetstyle Katsup and Musturd
+SquidPlays And licorice ;)
Gert Brink Nielsen Lel, you talking about the heat shrink?
depends on the psu.. some are completely black and others are rainbow
Even the Rainbow is ugly ass
For personal preference. I would get a semi modular so that way I can keep my PC organized for one, and two if i need the wires I take out, I can just plug them back in. A non modular power supply is just to restricting as far as organization goes.
4:41 kill myself
I have a cooler master m2 720w semi-modular psu and I'm happy with it. Only thing I don't like is it is not "Silent", even under low load.
Remember that video about anti-static and how you said the outside of the bag wasn't electrically resistant and it absorbed electricity and static? WELL... you need to do another video and go back on that, BECAUSE the inside of an anti-static bag is made out of the same dang material as the outside of the bag! Test it. Put up one of those things for testing for a static charge and you'll see the outside of the bag is totally resistant to electricity/static. SAME THING TO PEOPLE WHO THINK THE OUTSIDE OF THE BAG ABSORBS STATIC! Actually TEST it!
Nope, you just don't understand *how* an anti-static bag works.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-static_bag
what on earth are you talking about?
LinusTechTips What I'm talking about Linus, is that it's safe to put the motherboard on it's antistatic bag. It won't fry it or anything. It's completely safe. Watch Carey Holzman's Mythbuster video if you don't believe me.
Zap_12100 I wanted to continue the conversation, :( don't just drop me a couple of wikipedia articles and leave it at that. I mean I KNOW how they work. Come on, we can calmly have a discussion!
The issue comes with powering on the motherboard while it is on the bag... something that many reviewers say is a bad thing to do. This is because the bag is "slightly conductive" - you risk shorting something out if you power it on.
But, as always, it's advice - ignore it if you want... better to be cautious, than to potentially fry something.
I actually prefer non-modular PSUs because they have all the connectors I need right there. I had a semi-modular PSU before, misplaced the box in a storage room somewhere, and then I can't get the 2nd PCIe wire that I need.
there is more likes than views....
lol
Welcome to the internet. You must be new here. You should educate yourself on the way that UA-cam tracks views to understand why there are more likes than views. You can do this by typing in the search bar above "301 views" and learn the answer to your dilemma.
Chris Hicks At no point did he refer to the inane comment of "hue hue 301 views"
Grats on looking like a knob.
George Orford Hue hue someone who doesn't understand what's going on.
UA-cam will never fix their view counter! Will they?!?
Joshua's Recordings UA-cam's view counter is, and never was broken. It's meant to work like that. If a video gets too many views too quickly UA-cam needs to validate each view to make sure it's not a bot or anything. They just choose the cut off point to be 300. Meaning it locks at 301. Use google next time.
I always choose the non modular version because there is some space between the power supply and the hard drive cage. You also can put all the cables under your hard drive or use the nzxt method and put a shield over the psu section. Why spending 10 to 20$ more for a modular power supply when you could hide your cables in the case?
+Sebastian Flocke ummm well aesthetics
Modular PSU's are for lazy people! =D
No buying a pre built pc is for lazy people.

All I wanted was to hear you talk about Transformers, so I could learn as fast as possible, how well they function as noise and surge protectors. I searched your channel for "transformers" and had to chew on this bug for 5 minutes without even so much as a mention of the word. but it's aight, If you make a video about transformers, please take note of the versions which are grounded, and ungrounded, and which I would want to use with a computer, or stereo. I'm concerned about preserving ground-references on my computer, and also high dynamic range in my stereo. I'm also interested to see how a transformer measures up against the technology ZeroSurge has in their surge protectors, which stores the surge and releases it slowly instead of shunting it like an MOV's, I'm wondering if transformers do the same sorta thing. Anyway, Thanks bud, I love your videos :)
I can see why you made it big on UA-cam ! Good job on all the videos
Deff keep supporting him Cooler master
I have a semi modular and it works for me. At the moment i use all the connected connectors ( minus 1 sata power ), and 2 of the modular cables. Rest are in the PSU case.
But i will upgrade to full modular when DDR4 systems are fully implemented.
holy crap the audio how far tech has come
I'm so glad I found this info out before my ibuypower pc shipped. I would have bought a generic psu for nothing but now I have changed my order to include a good rated Corsair psu instead. Phew! + $97 is well worth it to me now that I know info from this, various articles and blogs. I never knew one of the most (if not the most) vital parts of a pc was so under looked by many pc noobs such as myself.
Funny, the PSU, that V-series in his sponsor ad, was the same one I got as an RMA replacement from Cooler Master (because they apparently can't simply replace a fan in my original psu), and it failed on me within 3 DAYS! So much for "Top-of-the-Line"...
great video, saving up to get a modular power from coolmaster
Thanks for this video. Glad to learn what it is and find out everything I needed to know.
I'm doing fine with my corsair 650W non-modular one! It just isn't that messy and works for sure..
