Yeah, Karl's logic there was great, haha ! I love how Karl with play along with any of Ricky's hypothetical situations and give it some thought before answering, no matter how ridiculous.
i love this episode. Karl basically found the split between controlled and automatic processes in the brain. he identifies the controlled part as "himself" and the automatic part as "his brain" and I feel like most people unconsciously do this anyway, at least to some level that being said, listening to the way he's describing it just leaves me in stitches. he's such a precious human lmao
The venomous frog was a perfect example of how Karl's brain works (or doesn't work). He hears a frog has enough venom to kill 1,000 people➡Karl 's brain➡there's a frog going crazy killing a lot of people. Onion!

Your double dose of Idiot Abroad followed by The Ricky Gervais Show the next day is so great. This has been a weekend highlight for me as I'm trying to get my sleep patterns back on track. I totally agree with you when you talked about doing what you want even though you think you're too old for it. You're completely right of course. If you like something, your age shouldn't even be a factor unless your physically or otherwise incapable of doing it. Surely Ricky knows that a chameleon changes its colour based on mood, not it's surroundings. Which is why it can do it if it was blind. A cuttlefish can change colour to match it's surroundings, but it's a myth that chameleons do. I remember once when Ricky said that monkey's don't have opposable thumbs. How did he get that so wrong? How does he think they hold bananas etc? :) And yeah Karl should not own a pet. Your expressions through the cat and dog stories were pretty much what I was thinking, too. Poor dog and cat :( Anyway Mandy, stay happy, stay in the moment and stay safe :)
Thank you! 🤗 Ricky thinks he is a lot smarter than he actually is. He gets a lot of stuff wrong. And some people just shouldn't have pets.. 😓 I have heard and seen so many horrible stories... Anyway, hope your sleeping patterns are improving Rusty!
@@MandyCaneLane With Rusty (the real one), I got him from the RSPCA dog shelter in Gibraltar before they put him to sleep for not having a home. I took him for a walk, and as we got back to the shelter, he jumped up on my leg. It was all he could do to tell me he didn't want to go back in there. So, I said to them "I'm taking him home". I was with him for about 3 months and we got on great. But he barked all day as I was out at work and there was nowhere there to let him off the lead so he could run around. No grass, just concrete in Gib. So, I made a call to my sister in the UK who had 4 other dogs and 5 acres of land in the countryside, to ask if she'd take him. I knew he'd have a better life there and be able to run around to his hearts content. She said yes, so as Rusty left with the pet transport people to go to UK I cried my eyes out. But I knew that I was doing the right thing for him and giving him a better life in the countryside. So Rusty has been with my sister ever since, the other dogs accepted him and now him and my sister are inseparable. He doesn't leave her side. Now that I'm back in the UK, I go 2-3 times a year to see her and the dogs. And I take them out for walks (as you've seen). If only Rusty knew that I borrowed his name for my UA-cam channel and how many people around the world know about him now :) I don't have a dog myself at the moment but I think one say I'll rescue another one. I do get 2 cats who wander into my back garden most days. So I started to feed them. They used to run off when they saw me, but now they don't. Now, they have the confidence to come into my house and sit on the sofa and one loves to be stroked. Anyway, dunno why I mentioned all that but that's Rusty's story :)
Your point about things being socially "unacceptable" as adults, such as going on the swings, is identical to a sketch by Scottish comedian Limmy. Who I highly recommend. Much of his stuff, including this sketch (which is very poignant as well as comedic) is available on UA-cam - "Limmys Show" is a good starting point. [Edit] And I entirely agree. I love going to the local bowling alley/arcade on a night out, in my late 30s. It's also got a liquor licence, which helps :p
When I was about 5, I used have a shirt with big picture of my face on lol It was a bit of a thing in the early 90s where they could put photos onto shirts. Was something my mum got me for some reason 😅 we got some old camcorder footage of me in it somewhere lol
I am so with you in regards to the age thing! It drives me mad! I have a job, I have friends, I socialise, I go to the gym, and people have nothing to say about that. But I also love and play video games, and suddenly people are like, "Video games? Aren't they for kids?", or the worst one: "I don't know how you have time to play video games..."... like these same people don't get home from work and watch Netflix for 3 hours lol. Anyway, your sentiment of "just have fun!" is exactly how it should be. Life's too short to think any other way!
I'm the same, love my gaming and had about 2 people react negatively when I said I was into my games because its just for kids apparently. Thing is games are different nowadays, they're more realistic and more mature with voice actors involved and everything but screw it I still play old skool games too that were more for kids, who cares like 🤷♂️. What's funny is that these same people probably watch equally childish stuff on Netflix or whatever themselves. All of us are big kids really.
Enjoyed watching Mandy weighing up the philosophical implications of Karl's worldview! My take on the Onion episode - It was appealing, and no matter how you slice and dice it, Karl's multi-layered undercutting of Ricky had me in tears.
Ricky is one of those friends who’s smart enough to understand the concept but isn’t smart enough to explain it to someone who doesn’t already understand it. That’s exemplified in this episode like you said.
@@fiverx2159 Yeah, just look at how long it took Karl to grasp that it wasn't the poisonous frog that did the biting, despite Ricky clearly saying so several times.
It has nothing to do with intelligence. It's about knowledge. For example, Ricky has a self-professed love and passion for science, but he's not a scientist; he's a comedian. So while he may pick up on scientific concepts on his own and gain a basic or slightly more than basic understanding of them, he doesn't dive into them like someone who works in that field would. That doesn't make him unintelligent. Identifying that as a sign of not being "smart enough" is like calling the best carpenter in the world daft because they don't understand the physics behind black holes. It's simply not their field of work.
Another example is Ricky explaining the "if enough monkeys type on typewriters they'll eventually write the works of Shakespeare" thing. Karl thinks Ricky is saying the monkeys will learn to read and write but Ricky is speaking about probability
Karl is always onto something if only he could get his point across. In the case of the brain, it’s even been shown that ‘something’ fires in the brain a fraction of a second before we make a decision, so the idea of a meta brain or even more subconscious thought is not ridiculous. You realise that Karl really does have nebulous thoughts; he just can’t explain them
The irony of Ricki asking Karl about Freud and then minutes later not understanding that Karl is talking about the conscious and the subconscious... Karl is mostly stupid but I think the inclination to analyse his own thought processes is quite a rare form of intelligence.
Karl is once again right about the brain and Ricky and Steve didn't understand. Many things in your body work automatically, like the lungs. You can use some willpower to control them but otherwise they work by themselves. The brain is the same. Ever walked from one side of town to the other while thinking about other things, then even if you ask yourself, which way did I go, you don't remember all the details? That's because your brain was on auto. But we have the ability to take it out of auto and direct it consciously.
This show, is always fun! We often forget..it was a podcast.. One of the first ones.. Joe Rogan has similar toons, but only sometimes the content is good enough to be animated, and only 2 minutes or so.. ...But this podcast with Karl, gave us 3 seasons.. There are some guys, who are unique, sometimes touching the ridiculous, and sometimes the genious, like they had to been invented..Karl is one of them!
If I could get into the brains of animals, they probably would say "We don't appreciate being locked up in cages, fish tanks, etc." They would probably be appreciative that we tend to them, but they want to roam free. We didn't have houses and cages and tanks and leashes to put them in at the beginning of time, and sometimes we weren't even around to tend to them, and they survived on their own. Good thing for them, we now have the vet for when they're injured, but yeah. I understood Karl on the "brain" part. Like, when we lift our arm. It's amazing how it only lifts when we decided for it to lift. And I guess the "onion" part, here, would be when the heart beats and when we breathe. So, I'd say we control the brain AND the brain controls us. That "no picture" guy is a vampire. 😂
Chameleons don't change colour to camouflage, it is a common misconception! It is a way to regulate their temperature and to communicate with other chameleons.
When they were discussing having a mirror on the moon and there was the back and forth where Ricky asked, "How would you get it on the right side of the moon - always facing the right way?" Then Karl asked, "Does the moon move then?" and Ricky answered, "Yes"... Ricky was kind of wrong. The Moon does rotate, but it's at the same rate as its orbital motion, a special case of tidal locking called synchronous rotation. We, on earth, only see the same 'side' of the moon. If you did put a huge mirror on the moon, as long as it was on the part that always faces the earth, then you would always see it.
Suzanne was cooking chilli con carne with those ingredients. If Brits are buying kidney beans, it's almost always for mexican food. When Stephen said his family shouldn't have pets, I'm guessing next animal they're gonna buy is that frog that "goes mental and bites a thousand people to death" that's probably why the parrot looks worried.
You should totally do a fall guys stream that we can all play with you. Even if it’s only half an hour. I love fall guys, haven’t played in a while though.
Having gone to University in Coventry in 1980s when there were dark sides suchvas Hillfields though good Irish pubs 😊 & Always say never go back, though with this I am wondering 🤔 be interesting in finding how Coventry has grown What do people think Should I drive back for a visit for the day ?
Karl and his family being terrible pet owners is a running theme. He's talked about how they "went through loads of cats" when he was young and he didn't really care. He has said things like: "you get used to it", "don't bother with a liver operation for a cat" and "if a cat gets stuck up a tree, leave it up there, get another one". He's all heart...
14:50 I thought Karl was trying to express the difference between producing a shopping list with brain in gear, as a conscious task, vs the onion popping into his head as a fleeting recollection. Karl did not identify with his subconscious self and attributed this subconscious recollection as a third party intervention 😁
There are videos on UA-cam that are only 8 minutes long but the subject is so dry and boring that sometimes I can't be bothered to watch all of it, but with Karl, it's like, oh, half an hour has just popped by. He really does fill a moment with interesting stuff even if sometimes it's nonsense. 😂
Wow someone else that loves onions? Everyone seems to hate em because of the onion breath but honestly onions go into so many meals. How come you can't have em any more??
@@MandyCaneLane I looked that up when you explained it, months ago, and saw the explanation for what you were talking about. I'll have to look it up again to remember exactly what it said. 33:08 or if there's a kid on the swings, push them forward so hard they just go round and round. 😋 Hang on, I haven't thought this through, cause then they and the swing would be tied to the overhead bar. Meh, just tell them Jackie Chan is signing autographs over there.

3:16 "At no point am I gonna lick a little frog's head. Not when it's alive, (n)or when it's dead." Karl went all Dr. Seuss there! Hearing how Karl and his family kinda neglected pets bummed me out too. Take care of your pets!!! (I know YOU do, just a general message to everyone) Your mom sounds cool! You're never too old to do anything. My mom went back to university in her mid 50s for Psychology, she still plays games on her laptop and she's 70 now. I h ope you can convince your mom to try the hair dye, even a little bit. Great reaction as always. Have a good one!
People frown on men my age playing on the swings, most parks are closed at night so I don't swing much these days. heh, Not that sort of swinging! Most Swing sets are small now, they've removed all of the large swing sets and replaced them with tiny 1/3 size for little kids. You made me picture an animated Miranda kicking a kid off a swing and then kicking it in the ass! In the style of the show!
I wish you hadn't said we should do younger things when we get older coz i've been debating whether i should learn to ride a motorbike and was finally veering towards being sensible and not doing it, then you said that! 🤔
Have you checked out Ricky & Steve's live London radio station x f m.done before these shows.Karl was just a radio producer full time.this is how they met after Ricky & Steve had become celebs after the office.England loves you😘
I think in this episode is another example of Ricky and Steve rubbishing Karl's questions when there is actual something interesting underneath to discuss. Ricky says there isn't a duality but 99% of the brain's processes we have absolutely zero control of or even awareness of. It's not like philosophy of mind and consciousness is settled.
Totally understand the other body thing. Nobody else would know it isn't your body, but you would; so you could be confident with it, and wouldn't feel ashamed as some people do with their own. There's some deep psychology in that subject actually, and Karl basically came up with the idea for the tv show Altered Carbon years before haha.
Karl just does not know how to articulate his thoughts. I think he was referring to consciousness when discussing his brain. And animals do learn from humans.
One thing that's irked me about this diary is Karl saying we all look like mimes in photographs and Ricky backing him up....how many mimes do you see standing still? He's thinking of human statues 😅
I think the point is that miming is about movement and a picture won't quite cut it. The more accurate statement would've been that *nobody* looks like a mime in a picture.
To be fair, Karl had more than one decent point. He just explained it rather poorly. The: "a lot of people treat their pets like humans"-bit isn't far from the truth. He just went with exactly the wrong examples, like: bathing them. xD
Mandy, you are like the perfect apertif before lunch - light, fluffy and delicious! I think this episode should be called Kruel Karl - that poor dog! 🐩👀😳
I kind of get where what he's thinking about blind people having affairs - relationships in general shouldn't be too different, but specifically for affairs it's more likely (just imo) to be based on attraction/lust than romantic feelings... age limits is a good point as well Everything else was a complete WTF, and some of the stuff about pets was just downright worrying
Yeah this is one of the episodes which there are many that prove that Karl or his family should never have animals, shouldn't have kids either probably but definitely not animals. He thinks having a pet is just to throw food at it sometimes and maybe it will protect the house.
Karl was probably talking about the conscious mind versus the subconscious mind. Ricky didn't pick up on it. Split brain experiments/studies kind of prove Karl right. He had consciously moved on from the shopping list but subconsciously he hadn't. Half of the shiat "you", i.e. the entity of free will in your body, think you are responsible for thinking or producing is actually generated subconsciously. Karl isn't really wrong here. Much of Karl's contemplation is too intelligent and goes over the average Joe's head. And somehow that turns into Karl being the idiot lmao
Hey Mandy. You are no doubt aware that Karl has been proved right about so many things he’s said over the years. From his idea of a person starting old and growing younger into a baby and there have been many many others. The latest is that there a scandal that has just broken that there has been systemic theft of items from the British Museum. This proves Karl was right to say that ‘they’re just as crafty in museums. Pocketing stuff.’ Ricky and Steve mocked him but, yet again, he’s been proved right. Just in this episode Karl was right and Ricky was wrong. Strange as it is, the Moon always presents the same side/aspect to the earth. That's why we never saw the 'dark side' of the moon until the Apollo missions. There are, in fact, mirrors already on the moon that astronomers bounce lasers off and back to earth for measuring the speed of light and other experiments and that works because the moon always presents the same face to earth as it orbits us. So, put that in your pipe and smoke it Ricky! 😈
Ricky talking about how to keep the mirror on the moon facing the correct way annoys me. The moon is tidally locked, the same side faces earth at all times.
10:40. This is what baffles me. You understand that this guy is given all the information, but still rejected all of it to fit his own narrative. He is lying to himself, and others, completely disregarding truth and reality, for a bizarre tangent. A lot like conspiracy theory people, like flat earth people and Christianity. It’s so bizarre that you know all this, and then you say you love him. Fuck! I don’t understand, but then I guess that’s my burden.🌿🌸

😖🥺😓
Mandy is a swinger 😂 she likes swinging in swings.
ricky is wrong. the same side of the moon is always facing earth
Ricky is actually wrong a lot 😅
Yeh was going to say. Gervais is so sure of himself too. 😂
14:50 I thought Karl was trying to express the difference between producing a shopping list with brain in gear, as a conscious task, vs the onion popping into his head as a fleeting recollection. Karl did not identify with his subconscious self and attributed this subconscious recollection as a third party intervention 😁
We are far more than our conscious self
If only Karl could word his thoughts properly, the world would be a better place, LOL
This is the one we've been waiting for
🙌🏻
I approve of Ricky’s salamander listening to a lot of Linkin Park
Hahaha, me too Chester! 🤣🤣
I want to see a show where Karl tests chameleon’s 😂
He would be so pissed off at how it isn’t like the cartoons 😂
Lol!!
I think if you put a chameleon on a mirror it's brain would short circuit and explode.
He thought of the onion because he rolled up the paper into layers. I have no proof of this, but now I cannot un-think it.
Lmao Jonathan!
Wow someone else that loves onions? Everyone seems to hate em because of the onion breath but honestly onions go into so many meals. How come you can't have em any more??
I have some digestive issues and onions give me ridiculous side pains for days. Consider me allergic. I really miss them though 😓
@@MandyCaneLane Ohh that's a shame, sorry to hear that.
@@MandyCaneLane I looked that up when you explained it, months ago, and saw the explanation for what you were talking about. I'll have to look it up again to remember exactly what it said. But I hope the digestive issues can / will wain one day so you can enjoy and not have to worry. I'm sorry you have to live with that.
Wait till you see the episode where Karl goes camping. That's really in tents. 😀
🤭
33:08 or if there's a kid on the swings, push them forward so hard they just go round and round. 😋 Hang on, I haven't thought this through, cause then they and the swing would be tied to the overhead bar. Meh, just tell them Jackie Chan is signing autographs over there.
Ricky is funny at times the cartoon makes me laugh the expressions on their faces is funny
Agreed!
I agree...its neglect.
I love Fall Guys! There's no age-limit on fun! 😆 Now we know what you do in your spare time, kicking the local kids off the monkey bars 🤭🤭🤭 I think these podcasts were about 5 years before An Idiot Abroad started, so he does wise-up a bit! 😄
I’ll try not to fall asleep to this one 🤪
🤗
@@MandyCaneLane made it through 👍 pretty easy to stay awake mid day. Imma avoid Karl reactions at night going forward though 🤣 just drifted right off to sleep watching idiot abroad last night lol
@@Jbatley1 Lol! Hey, if it helps you sleep, more power to you!!
3:16 "At no point am I gonna lick a little frog's head. Not when it's alive, (n)or when it's dead." Karl went all Dr. Seuss there!
Hearing how Karl and his family kinda neglected pets bummed me out too. Take care of your pets!!! (I know YOU do, just a general message to everyone)
Your mom sounds cool! You're never too old to do anything. My mom went back to university in her mid 50s for Psychology, she still plays games on her laptop and she's 70 now. I h ope you can convince your mom to try the hair dye, even a little bit.
Great reaction as always. Have a good one!
Lol!! I didn't notice he rhymed!
And your mom sounds cool too! 🤪🤗
Lmao! Damn striaght, it's MY TURN!
I wish you hadn't said we should do younger things when we get older coz i've been debating whether i should learn to ride a motorbike and was finally veering towards being sensible and not doing it, then you said that! 🤔
Have you checked out Ricky & Steve's live London radio station x f m.done before these shows.Karl was just a radio producer full time.this is how they met after Ricky & Steve had become celebs after the office.England loves you😘
Not yet Mark! It's on my list though!
This was brilliant x
Thank you Charlie! 🤗
Thanks again Mandy. He won't lick a frog but he will kick a panda in the bollocks if he has to. (Idiot Abroad s3 reference)
And a duck up the arse
😂😂
He'd also kick a duck up the arse
Karl just does not know how to articulate his thoughts. I think he was referring to consciousness when discussing his brain. And animals do learn from humans.
MCL is just spoiling us now. Double shot of KP.
🤗🙌🏻
By the way know its a few vids ago but the turkey fact reminded me... I forgot to mock you for lack of ability of whistle 😂
😔
Soooo many things I could say here 🤔😳😣🥴 but you pretty much covered it, so I'll just say, Yaaaayyyy Mandy!🤗 and no, I'll see YOU soon!
🤣🤣🤗
One thing that's irked me about this diary is Karl saying we all look like mimes in photographs and Ricky backing him up....how many mimes do you see standing still? He's thinking of human statues 😅
Lol!!
I think the point is that miming is about movement and a picture won't quite cut it.
The more accurate statement would've been that *nobody* looks like a mime in a picture.
Try fleabag as well.great funny sitcom for women.really different when it 1st came out😘
Loved it I think your mum will be going raving soon 😮
Lmao!
We love Karl's onion lobe 🧅😃
Yes we do! 🤣🤣
Excellent Mandy ☺
To be fair, Karl had more than one decent point. He just explained it rather poorly. The: "a lot of people treat their pets like humans"-bit isn't far from the truth. He just went with exactly the wrong examples, like: bathing them. xD
Lmao! 🤣🤣🤣
Mandy, you are like the perfect apertif before lunch - light, fluffy and delicious! I think this episode should be called Kruel Karl - that poor dog! 🐩👀😳
Light is the skin tone
Fluffy is the hair
And delicious is the laugh? LOL!
I can't wait for you to react to the episode titled "Leg Rubber" it is hilarious! 😂😂
Great reaction as always Mandy..👌🏻👍🏻
Haha, ok. Sounds like a fun one 🤪
I kind of get where what he's thinking about blind people having affairs - relationships in general shouldn't be too different, but specifically for affairs it's more likely (just imo) to be based on attraction/lust than romantic feelings... age limits is a good point as well
Everything else was a complete WTF, and some of the stuff about pets was just downright worrying
Yeah this is one of the episodes which there are many that prove that Karl or his family should never have animals, shouldn't have kids either probably but definitely not animals. He thinks having a pet is just to throw food at it sometimes and maybe it will protect the house.
Super sad. Too many people just shouldn't have pets but do 😓
Karl isn't dumb, but he is too insular for his own good. He just refuses to see things outside of his own perspective.
30 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
That must be a mistake 😮
My age? No... I kept track 🤣
Loved your reaction Mandy, but once again Carl learnt NOTHING!
Karl is a 'actor ' now, he was in Derek etc, sorry was using onion brain
Karl was probably talking about the conscious mind versus the subconscious mind. Ricky didn't pick up on it. Split brain experiments/studies kind of prove Karl right. He had consciously moved on from the shopping list but subconsciously he hadn't. Half of the shiat "you", i.e. the entity of free will in your body, think you are responsible for thinking or producing is actually generated subconsciously. Karl isn't really wrong here. Much of Karl's contemplation is too intelligent and goes over the average Joe's head. And somehow that turns into Karl being the idiot lmao
If only he could word his thoughts better!
Pocketing stuff.’
Ricky and Steve mocked him but, yet again, he’s been proved right.
Two consecutive Karl videos, am I dreaming? ❤❤❤
I love onions - you can't eat them you poor thing??
Nope. 😭
I feel the tears 😢...you ok with garlic I hope??
Wow, I just finished your new idiot abroad video this is great!
🤗
Prettiest girl in the world🤗
Ricky talking about how to keep the mirror on the moon facing the correct way annoys me. The moon is tidally locked, the same side faces earth at all times.
Ricky's wrong again. A chameleon doesn't change colour to match it's surroundings. It's nothing to do with camouflage. It's mood.
Who's says the park is only for kids and who makes up the rules?
Exactly 😌
Do a The Young Ones reaction, Mandy. you'll love it. ❤🤗
Mandy, I agree with Mr Guitar, but prepare yourself for EXTREME randomness if you choose this assignment. Go on, DO IT!
I need to know, did your mum ever go for any colour? 💇♀️
Not yet! 😭
@@MandyCaneLane Ugh, still putting it off 😔
@@kyletaylor-richardson yeah, a shame too, she would look great!
@@MandyCaneLane I’m in a ‘stop putting things off mood’, gonna get my first tattoo soon, I hope she eventually decides to go for it. 😊
Your eyes look motherly ... U preg? ... dont know if thats rude to ask... but im curious
😮 is that a thing!? Motherly eyes? 🤔interesting
Hahahahhaa. No I am not. I am motherly to my cat though. I even treat her like a person 🤣
@@MandyCaneLane who needs kids when you've got fur babies
@@friendlyneighbourhoodsteve4087 well I’m on the Autism spectrum- the „rude“ kind- but even I know that „looks like you gained weight“ is not the best thing to say to a young lady, so i needed something else… motherly eyes sounds even a bit romantic i thought 🤷🏼♂️
@@CanisLupus_666 good call 👍
Surprised to hear you coming out with onionphobic views.
Lmao! I actually love onions, they just don't love me back 😓
2:40 He is half French (Canadian) after all, hence the name "Gervais".
I come from the French too, but I guess the accent didn't carry 😅
You should not do stuff that you're too old for!!! Don't be immature!!!
