Neil Innes should have as much money as Elton John and Paul McCartney. He's a delightful talent! And it's not just doorknobs that come off in your hand!
Fookin' hilarious! I grew up with Elton John's music playing in heavy rotation on my Classic Rock station, and there were some songs where I thought, "jeez the drugs must've been good back then!" I mean, some of those lyrics! But he's regarded as a genius, and I say "live and let live." He and Bernie made a good living with it, so who am I to criticise? Neil Innes does a brilliant parody here, capturing the essence of what is worthy of ridicule in Elton's songwriting and performance. The glasses were spot-on! And remember, "it's not only doorknobs that come off in your hand!" 🤣
Also: I just found out, Thanks to a UA-cam suggestion, that the Phrase "Godfrey Daniel(s)" is something called a minced oath and it actually means "God Damn Them". Famous comedian W.C. Fields used to say it, when appropriate, in his films. If you do a quick search for "Godfrey Daniel W.C. Fields" You'll find several clips of him saying it.
Once again Neil proves that he was an undisputed musical/lyrical Master! Thanks for posting this, too! I just got that "Anyway it's not just doorknobs, that come off in your hand" line. Well played Mr. Innes!
Neil is an absolute gem of a human being. Met him & the Rutles in Aberdeen last May. He was so lovely & down to earth, as were the rest of the band! Such a wonderful talent. Hope to see them again soon.
An Elton John parody, getting influences from many Elton songs, but I would guestimate 70% from "Border song" Make a loop alternating Godfrey Daniel and Holy Moses several times and you'll get it.
Who exactly is it that are holding up the DVD release of this series? I remember Mojo magazine talking about the subject and cryptically stating something along the lines of "Word is one party wants too much money, and surprisingly it's not Eric Idle..."
It's a great song because on the surface it looks like an absurdist tossoff, but it's really a great moral lesson. I thought about it a bit. Growing up in the West, we were always taught not to "take the Lord's name in vain." This song beautifully ups the ante, and adds value: It points out that all cursing of one's circumstances is based on a faulty premise--that the universe is at fault when you're unhappy--and reflects one's own personal issues. And it does all this in a funny little song!
Many years past the original comment but I do not hear Brooklyn owes the charmer but i do hear Border Song by our Elt. Steely Dan wasnt as nearly as famous in the UK as Elt was in the world. If any similarity it unintentional Im sure. This is PARODY of the Elton John Bernie Taupin kind.
Those are the greatest Elton John glasses that Elton never wore.
Neil Innes should have as much money as Elton John and Paul McCartney. He's a delightful talent! And it's not just doorknobs that come off in your hand!
Neil innes is the best little known musician/songwriter. What an amazing talent. RiP
I believe in believing, I'm deeply concerned!!!!
Fookin' hilarious!

A bird in the hand, equals two in the bush and ill never change my mind..
God this may be the most underrated human in history..
Once again Neil proves that he was an undisputed musical/lyrical Master!

I love this song.. And the glasses.. :P
I love the Rutles and now I love Rutlon John!
it nice to hear a song that doesnt have a second meaning something that you can just listen to and not have to figure it out. Its relaxing somewhat
timing and frasing ...greatly done
the lyrics are just so bloody good....grrrreat stuff
300% Bernie Taupin
I think Innes might have meant it to be a parody of how thrown together and pseudo-esoteric Taupin's lyrics were.
God I love Neil Innes
wonderful, a wonderment and so Neil. Love you Man. Why don't you tour in Dublin. We'd all love to see you. :)
this is such a great song. both musically and in the lyrics. The costume is also 'different' XD i want those glasses!
Classic Neil, my man
Elton John said the Bonzo Dog Band was a big influence on him. Well, how bout that?
Absolutely love this!
I love it!
love this song and his voice!
Thanks for uploading this!!!!!
His little pianos and bigs boots. Everett's big glasses!
Love the "glasses".
It's a sketch from Rutland Weekend Television, post Monty Python venture from Eric Idle.
The observation of the Beatles from Bootle made the 'Rootles' almost superior to the observed ones.
genius!
Still looking for that perfect occasion to use "Godrey Daniel."
Elton's got nothing on Neil!! He's the man!
bless him!
hehehe... very stylish attire
Wow, I unironically love this song. Does it specifically parody anything in particular?
Is a style parody of Elton John.
An Elton John parody, getting influences from many Elton songs, but I would guestimate 70% from "Border song" Make a loop alternating Godfrey Daniel and Holy Moses several times and you'll get it.
@@rogernorton9904 Good ears my friend!
Yes - Elton and Bernie!! (Bernie in particular)
That's the thing about Neil Innes, It's like he took the general feel of an artist's sound a made it his own.
Who exactly is it that are holding up the DVD release of this series? I remember Mojo magazine talking about the subject and cryptically stating something along the lines of "Word is one party wants too much money, and surprisingly it's not Eric Idle..."
I don't think Neil Innes could have written the words to this song. It MUST have been Bernie Taupin! 😜
Aye, and Taupin wrote How Sweet To Be An Idiot. . .
@@Blacky474 nah that was Oasis. Woteva!
Hope Elton hasn't seen this! Or W.C.Feilds! Godfrey Daniel! Fan-tastic!
Love the outfit and song. Countdown to when lady gaga rips it off 3, 2,1 .....
top
from 2.03 :)
Look at those pupills benath that "glases" im an urban spaceman baby i got "speed"..
What’s the first line he sings here?
I think it's impressive :)
Neil totally understood the absolute shite and corny lyrics of Bernie Taupin ... He also understood the greatness of the actual music ... Excellent!
Elvis With dada
was it neil innes that did a song called...they came from the sea , been trying to find it for ages...
Yes - I vaguely remember it, too. Was it one of those Grimms songs that included spoken word?
It's a great song because on the surface it looks like an absurdist tossoff, but it's really a great moral lesson.

Lyrics. Listen
Funny, but I can hear almost as much "Brooklyn Owes the Charmer" in this as "Border Song". Not that Innes was afraid to wrestle two genres at once.

its actually from i think a sketch from early monty python blackmail sketch i could be wrong oh wel whatever
