Indonesia is by far my favorite. Because they really just confused the hell out of the Mongols by surrendering super quickly, directed all their forces to wasteful campaigns whilst feigning loyalty, and were generally just such bad subjects that the Mongols decided it wasn't worth it and left. It has a similar energy to malicious compliance.

The reason why the Mongols suddenly left Java was because monsoon wind will soon end and they doesn't want stuck on hostile island for 6 month, they intended to come back with proper army for invasion of about 100k vs 30k on this punitive expedition (which was originally to punish Kertanegara but bro killed by Jayakatwang so the Mongol capture and executed him) but Kublai Khan died and Raden Wijaya just come to fill the power vacuum.

For the context: Odorico of Pordenonne visited Java during the reign of Jayanegara in Majapahit Empire (2nd king of Majapahit) & reported that the Javanese kingdom had seven vassals under it & engaged in several wars with Yuan dynasty but successfully repelled it.. this was already many years after the event of the Sino-Mongol's defeat from Raden Wijaya (1st king of Majapahit)

The Japanese beach defenses didn't really fail. They inflicted grievous losses on the Mongol armies from their shore defenses, causing the mongols to stay on their ships where they were eventually hit by a storm. The madlad Japanese were actually getting onto boats THEMSELVES to attack mongols in their ships, which caused the mongols to lash their ships together so that they could better respond to these Japanese naval raids. It was the lashing together of ships that meant they were terribly equipped to deal with a storm. So if it wasn't for Japanese military success the Mongols would not have been severely affected by the typhoon.

    • @peekaboo1575

Interesting. I was aware that the Japanese offered heavy resistance and that the Mongols went back to their ships to figure things out, but I never knew that the Japs were also preparing to board the Mongol ships and that this led to the Mongols being at a poor position when the storm came.

Fun facts: The mongols invasion of Vietnam is surprisingly similar to the Napoleonic invasion of Russia, half a millenium later.
Both armies seemed invincible going into war, both relied on their mobility to overwhelm opponents.
Both had rapid early success, captured the capital cities but the vietnameses and russians abandoned their capital and employed attrition warfare.
As the war dragged on, the mongols and the frenchs were then severely weakened by guerilla attacks, the weather, diseases, lack of food and other logistic problems.
When they retreated, they faced ambushes and counter attacks and suffered catastrophic defeats, to the point their grand armies were close to be wiped out completely.

option 4 is quite funny actually.
kublai khan's army came to java to punish kertanegara of singosari kingdom for not paying their tributes to the khan. when they arrived, kertanegara was already usurped by jayakatwang of kediri kingdom. so they tried to tax the new kingdom, which they failed.
so a guy named raden wijaya of majapahit, who was allied with the deceased kertanegara of singosari, worked together with the khan's army to depose jayakatwang of kediri.
after achieving victory, raden wijaya invited the khan's officials back to his estate to collect their tributes, but warned them not to bring weapons, as princesses cannot handle the sight of weapons. 200 of the khan's men came unarmed to the estate, got shanked immediately (well whaddya expect), demoralising the khan's army, and proceed to chase the rest of the main mongolian army back to the ocean with ambush tactics

The most impressive thing about the Mongols is that they conquered so much land and countries that they were the biggest empire to have ever existed on the planet, but left zero structures behind. No statues, no palaces, no giant walls of a city, not even a freaking bridge over a river or something. And that's because for all their conquering, they never once stopped being a nomadic civilization. Sure, they had VERY fancy tents, when you are the ruler of most of the known world you get to have the best tent ever. But its still a tent, it doesn't last centuries, its not supposed to. When a Mongol saw one of those epic palaces in China, they were all like "Yeah, that palace is nice, but with this tent I can go anywhere."

I see some comments that give too much credit for Japanese defense effort at the time.
But let me remind you, It is STILL the typhoon that carried the whole defense. Sure, they gave them some resistance to some extent which the Mongols experienced from everywhere they invaded, but they quickly adapted their tactics and eventually overwhelmed them.
They were not only skilled at their superior horse archery skills, but also close melee combat as well. During their campaign on middle east, they dismounted their horses and waded into melee or resort to artillery as they faced mountainous terrian or fortress.
They didn't conquer the half of the world with no reason.

But the Mongols weren't even invading Japan. The Soldiers used for the invasion of Japan were mostly soldiers from previously occupied cities, as well as them not having many horses, because you can't carry many on a boat. Therefore the Mongol army that I vaded Japan was a totally different compared to the usual Mongol armies. Far worse, low on resources, low on morale, lots of communication issues
The Mongols had the advantige in good commanders and a likely bigger army, but from all we know, there is not enough reliable information to judge if the Japanese would have won the second invasion regardless or not.
However, the story that Japan got dominated and got only saved by the hurricane is just untrue. It was more like a rather equal battle, at worst just favouring the Mongols a bit, which then got made a lot easier for the Japanese

    • @信衞門
      @信衞門 2 місяці тому

During the second invasion, the Mongols set out months before typhoon season because they knew it would happen. They weren't stupid. And yet they failed to make a proper landing on Japan, causing them to be washed away when the typhoon season inevitably arrived. Sounds like a skill issue to me.
Also the majority of the soldiers were conscripted Chinese and Koreans. They weren't the same soldiers who did the conquering.

The first Mongol invasion of Japan was different from the second Mongol invasion of Japan. During the first invasion, the Japanese beach defenses failed, the Mongols captured the beach, and the Mongol armies penetrated miles inland. The Mongols went back to their ships for the night to resupply and was then hit by the typhoon. During the second invasion, the Mongol fleet was split into a smaller Korean fleet and larger Southern Chinese fleet. The Korean fleet arrived in Japan first but couldnt defeat the newly constructed beach fortifications, so they retreated to some islands nearby to wait for the Chinese fleet. When the Chinese fleet arrived, both fleets got hit by a typhoon.
