Are Old Flagship Electronic Drumsets Still Worth Buying?

- If you've ever been on ebay, you've seen them. Older flagship electronic drumsets. They are over 10 years old, but still cost $3000. Why is that happening, and are they still worth buying? My answer is: it depends. An older TD10 will go for $2300. Not a good price at all. Dated sounds, older drum pads. A DTXTREME III will go for $2000. Is it worth it? Maybe, but the pads are all rubber, and again, dated sounds. So really it depends on the drumset price and condition. But I'd be careful before buying any flagship drumset. They are overpriced at the moment. I personally don't see why a drumset that came out a decade ago should still cost $4000. Just my opinion though.

Back in 2011 I bought a TD20SX with PM30 monitor, DW hardware, all new. I still have it, it is the most beautiful electric kit to play on. So reliable and durable. I feel that Rolands and Yamahas, even the old ones have a massive edge over Medeli, Alesis and Behringer.

Just recently discovered and subscribed to your channel as it is rare you get honest down to earth reviews and information on e-drums. Okay, both my kits are old but would never part with them, but it’s great to see the progress since my first Simmons back in the 80s. Sadly I can’ afford anything new but it’s great to know what’s out there. As for prices on used, it’s like everything in life, if you really like it and want it, you buy it for the best deal you can afford at the time😎
I had a Yamaha DTXpress 4. It had the large snare, full hi-hat pad that went on an actual hi-hat stand and the large multi-trigger cymbals. I played live with it and it was great.
I had one too back in 2010 and it was great. I regret selling it to this day.

Great edrum vids mate, loving the artist ones on Danny Carey & of course Rick Allen, his edrums really pushed the tech & ideas at that time.
The original Yamaha Dtxtreme was quite readily available here in Australia, I sold a few when they came out. The pads were a shallow wooden shell with a coated single ply drum head over foam rubber & a rubber ring on the metal hoop. They were quite loud like a firm practice pad & the sounds in the module are recordings of real Yamaha acoustic drums which is why the module still sounds great. They do look fantastic too

I just saw you talk about that beautiful DTXtreme III kit and remembered seeing one for cheap on Reverb - but they only called a DTXplorer III portable kit a DTXtreme II kit! LOL What a shocker of a difference!
I also saw what looked like a cool kit - a TD-10 - for a decent ($1500 or less?), but again... it's a really old kit, and I'd have to travel around the States to pick it up!
Man... I just wanna grab a 4 grand loan and score up a brand new TD-30 kit... I really do! Then I'll just use my DM10 as additional triggers to fill in around it - or maybe just use that one at home for practice (I do love my DM10!)

I am an owner of this beautiful piece of history:). I know that it is no longer interessting to most of drummers, but still it has some great functionalities though the outdated sounds and so on. As well as there are almost no videos on it.

I bought a cheap e kit in 2007. It was single zone pads. After changing the rubber pads to mesh heads. Then had the oppo in 2012 to get a used Millenium MPS-400, again with rubber pads.
Swiftly converted to mesh heads, then in 2020, had the oppo to get a TD-8 module for it.
Now along with an HD-8 pedal an CY8 cymbal for the hi hat, Alesis real (snare) drum.
It was complete, I'm luving it!
You make excellent and informative videos! I bought at Yamaha DTX Extreme II about 5 years ago for about 1K . . . I also had a Roland TD-15 Kit at the time . . . I quickly went BACK to the Roland TD 15 and just bought bigger pads. Mesh heads were MUCH more comfortable to play than the DTX rubber heads and the module for the DTX was not intuitive.

Great video. You mention the TD-20 and skip to the TD-30, but I think right now the sweet spot for a used flagship might be the TD-20x/TDW-20. The module can be had for $800-900 used (basically a $300 premium from current TD-20 prices) and it's really a major upgrade from the stock TD-20 sounds. Paired with some nice drums and you have yourself a great e-kit.

Hey Justin, you produce some solid videos, thanks for taking the time, it really shows. In looking at the flagship kits, once you take away the module, is a good set of pads and hardware, still a "good set of pads and hardware" regardless of the vintage,, has that part of the technology really changed much (tupperwear rubber ones aside).

An interesting thing about the original DTXtreme is that it has hardware that can be used on acoustic drums. Even if you can't sell the whole kit, you might be able to make some money off the YESS mounts, lugs, and screws. Those kits might be worth more as spare parts than as a whole.
Solid info. Got my TD 10 in 99 and still love it. A few triggering quirks aside. I and to add the upgraded cymbals, and maybe the expansion card, but it works for me, and any session I’ve needed it for. I do miss an acoustic kit at times, but it’s not killing me. That TD 50 KV beckons unto me, it’s siren call so sweet to my ears. Then the whole $$ thing brings me back to reality.

I have a td10exp. Was surprised how good it still sounds compared to my brothers td50...
I still have my TD-10 from early 2000's but I put my own set together instead of buying the full kit. Look for modules for sale and put together your own kit. For bass triggers I took a tom tom and cut it in half, put mesh heads on them and ddrum triggers. They lay flat on the floor and the beaters are inverted. Lower cost, GREAT LOOK!
Well after watching this, I'm thinking my recent pick-up of a Yamaha DTX920K for $2200 on Reverb was a pretty sweet deal.

i went down the route of only wanting roland.
i bought a td6 with rubber pads and over time
bought and swapped its parts. i now have
pd125s and cy15s for that bigger feel.
its mounted on a pearl square rack.
all i need to do is replace my TD9 with
td25 or 30, although as its home use only,
the td9 is a great module. I like roland as its
a very upgradeable brand. in UK we have WHD
roland style kits that are great for the money.

Selling my DTXII kit, VERY Hard to find but moving on to VAD506. Honestly the DTXII is loved by every drummer I know that has heard it. I've played studio gigs and sounds amazing to this day, it's highly underated

I have seen a extreme iis for £390. Four toms, two crashes, ride and hats. I was tempted a while back when it was £500 but got cold feet because of its age and the fact that the pads are rubber.
I have also seen some hard-core followers say that this was as good as e drums got back in the day and improvements have been minimal since.
What do you think? I know you can't say whether or not the kit itself is viable, but it is promised to be in good condition and the pictures look good.
If I were to indicate an interest, what should I look out for and how should I test it?

yes the orginal DTxtreme may be rare - but I have one and use it with the DTxtreme 3 module - i like the fact it uses normal drum skins...I paid 1500 NZ for the kit itself a few years back, its probably still worth that ...and the module has lots of features that still make it current as you can load samples into it and layer them. been trying to find one more matching tom but they never seem to come up, so will get an alesis strike one and recolour it to match.
What about the DDrum4SE? :)
I love that drum module, and I'm really sorry Clavia didn't improve it to this day. (2Box might be considered as a successor, but that doesn't really get upgraded either)

I still have my TD10 I'm currently upgrading it with a laptop running AU's. The sounds blow but it triggers fine. I'm using your channel to see what are some good options.

Absolutely! I still have my TD-10 from the early 2000's. Be sure to look up how to replace the internal battery before you start saving kits.

Great video. But, why didn't you mention the 2box, which brand new is less expensive than used all of the above, and still, in many ways, is a lot more competitive than the current flagships?
I just bought a TD20 off Reverb for $2200 about two months ago-
Something that I think you forgot to mention is that the value proposition with this *particular* option is that all of the pads are *fully compatible* with newer modules. All you need to do is drop in a TD30 module and you effectively have a tricked out TD30 for under 3 grand (figuring you can sell the 20 for $700 or so, and pick up the 30 for $1400).
Kind of a lesser extent for the TD50 due to those pretty trick digital pads, but the upgrade package is what? $3k? So 5 large and you have a FULL TD50.
That was my mentality at least.

Also, I'd add (sorry for commenting late), that trigger technology hasn't changed significantly. I think the value is in the trigger, not necessarily the brain. You can upgrade the brain, kick, and hi-hat and have an amazing kit for nearly half the price.

Just got a TD 10 Module with the white shells Got it for some extra triggers I thought to myself dang I should have asked 65Justin what he thought about old models but Got the set for 900 was going to ask if I got a good deal I knew you would have a video on it also picked up some iron cobra powerglide 900s and pork pie seat got the other ones from Sweetwater after I learned from you that you can wheel and deal with Sweetwater Awesome videos man keep up the good work I’ve learned Almost all I know on these beasts from your vids I just started with edrums and learned a lot so far from here

When you are so tired of the sounds that you don't want to practice anymore.
Roland TD6 for $300 is a good deal though. Sounds are ok and its still fun to play

I'm currently looking for my first Edrum set. I currently live in an apartment and was looking at either the Td11k or Dtx522k. I just saw a Roland Td-10 on ebay for $750 with the option to make an offer. The seller lives in the same city as I do, so I can pick it up and save on shipping. It looks like it's missing a cymbal though. Would this be a good deal?
It is pretty amazing how much some of these older electronic drums sell for...IMO, Roland still holds the crown for "the" e-drum market, but some others are competing pretty well...I'd considered buying a used kit when I bought the DTX532K, but after many hours of weighing my options, it was just as cheap (for me, I was already locked into Yamaha with the DTX400), so I bought new...
I honestly could care less about module sounds, I use vst's in my daw for my sounds...I have Steven Slate Drums 4, BFD3, Superior, with all kinds of expansion packs to go with 'em, along with all kinds of other drum vsti's that run in Kontakt..Sound-wise, they're all pretty hard to beat...What I hate are how my pads look...I wish I could find some Roland/Alesis pads that look like real drums, without paying a fortune...That's why I'm considering going the diy route for my toms...But, I still might just buy some single zone mesh head pads & call it done...By the time I factor in the drums/shells, triggers, mounts, etc., it's getting pretty close to the price of a Roland/Alesis/GoEdrum/etc., so I'm still debating...The "troubleshooting" thing is weighing on me too, I know I could get a diy-e-drum to work, but being able to plug it in, then adjust my module is appealing too...If $$$ weren't an option, it wouldn't matter, but I'm on a fixed income, so I have to watch how much I spend...I do like to eat sometimes...hahaha
Great channel dude, I think I've went back & watched all your videos now, very informative on a subject that I really like...
I actually have the COMPLETE Roland Flagship from the Late 90's (with a couple of fun extras) that I learned to play on as a kid (32 now) because it was my fathers and so I understand the sentimental aspect of this kit because I remember my father having that same enthusiasm. Especially when at that time they were highly recommended by Pete Townshend who would record pieces of music and send it to other musicians or artists to layer. People hate on the feel of the drum head or the rubber on the cymbal and I understand that, however I also feel that those people were also never in a school band or drum line where sometimes you had to use practice pads. There was no was my mother was going to sit there and listen to me learn my rudiments over and over again. Two years ago my father died of cancer and so I am actually willing to sell mine as it is in great condition. I can no longer play at the right price. What does "at the right price" mean to me? It means that I want it to go to a good home and to someone who has that same love and passion for percussion as my father did his whole life but also understand that electronics do phase out without upgrades. I will say one thing that was not mentioned in this video is that the boards can be updated and while you cannot necessarily change the timing you can make many of the other features better by putting in newer better cards. Another thing that was not mentioned is that unlike other brands that make their newer products non compatible with older models, that is NOT the case with the old school Vdrums so some of the things you mentioned about them not being worth a certain value is slightly misleading. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I know plenty of people that love the original models because they mark a significant milestone in changing the way music is created and played bringing it into the more digital age. I also know many people who swear they will never touch an electronic drum kit because it "lacks soul" and never develops "character" from wear and tear. Regardless if a true musician is interested or even wanting to get their child into percussion the way my father did with me as a starter kit, I would be willing to talk about options.
Anyone who says an electronic kit lacks soul has never played one properly amplified. I run 4- 18" subwoofers and 2-10" Yamaha Club Series Monitors through a Mackie 1400 watt amp. BOO YEAH!
Agreed, the original Yamaha DTXtreme kit (wooden shells) is very rare, my guess would be that anyone that can find one and buys it, would be more as a "collector's item" than a playable kit.
I’m an avid user of the DTXtreme, found it for $600 at a local music shop, it’s absolutely amazing, and has surprisingly good sounds.
The nice wooden shells are perfectly playable with a 2box drummodule!! With this module you can make the necessary settings and with mesh heads very usable!
About 5 yearsish ago I picked up a dtxtreme IIs, It didn't have the original module and I think I paid $1100 for it. It came with the Yam sound system, two satellite speakers and a big amp.
I set it up at home and then I went hunting on ebay. I picked up the original module for just under $300. I then replaced the hi hat with the newer version. (can't remember the price) and the same with the kick pad. I bought an addition tom pad and a couple of cheaper yam cymbals to act as splash and chinas.
I probably have 1700 invested into the kit (plus loads of spare parts). It sit's in my basement and is basically my sons kit.
If and when he moves, it's his. If he doesn't want it I'll try to sell it but I know I'm not going to get a profit out of it.

Hi there, i have a couple of questions buzzing my ears.
I got an almost brand new Millenium Mps-150x kit last autumn for 200€, and for my home needs works pretty well, i midi output into Sd2 so i don't really care about module sounds.
But the mono ride, snare and switch hh are my biggest gripes, so i'm planning on upgrading the kit instead of buying a whole new one (very thight budget here).
At first i thought swapping with an Mps-450 module, it's still pretty cheap and being same brand it works out of the box, but there's no way to find a supported dynamic hh pedal controller, and Thomann suggested me the Mps-850 pads and stand controller, wich came 250€ total with the module, more the kit itself, so it's a big no for me.
After more searching i narrowed a bit:
Using a Ddrum ddti to trigger midi imputs, it should suport all the pads i have out of the box, and it's open to upgrades (that i'm ayway goin' to make when i have some spare money), but i heard it only support two zones triggers, but none about hh controllers, it support dynamic foot controllers like the Yamaha or Roland, or i'm forced to take a hh stand? Space it's a factor too as i have the kit im my bedroom near the pc.
Or i found a Roland Td-12 module for 190€, it's in good shape but the lcd, (as mentioned it lights up but nothing to read, it's something i have to consider before buying it if it's fixable, as i probably have to fiddle into options to make my kit working).
It's my actual setup ready to use? Being all mono pads shouldn't be a problem, so i could at least start to use the new module while slowly upgrading the set.
Or at worst i can keep it until i have all the right pads.
So, what would be the best option for my needs?
I don't care for mono toms pads, and i don't plan to add any more, i have set it up as my acustic kit, (kick, snare, tom, floor tom, hh, 2 crashes and ride) so i don't need of extra inputs or such.
The DDti seems the cheapest one, ( i found an used one for 100€) but the possibility of the Td-12 are tempting, but seems impossible to find a fully lcd functionig unit.
I'm on the fence.

Just adding, i found a Td4 module for 150€, it's still a good choice? I seen many video demos and it seems to works great, but still i don't get if it have stereo or tri zone cymbals support.

Still enjoying my Yamaha dtx2 xpress! Bought for 150 euro and add some pads en symbols. Tweek the sound and sounds good. Ofcourse the new are better but I have so much joy for a few euro.

Do you know if i can use a tp 100 snare pad (the dtxtreme 3 zone) with my dtxplorer kit? Would i get the crosstick and rim shot ability? . it sucks not having crosstick. ijust ordered one off ebay. For 50 $. Youre the most knowledgeable about pad compatibility. If i upgraded modules to say a dtx700 id get another. Chokeable crash output and a three zone ride ability. They run about 400$.
What do you think about the Td-12?
I've been trying to buy my buddy's td10 kit for year and your right, he's extremely attached to it. At this point I only want it to practice at home. My neighborhood is full of retirees so i can't practice on my acoustic kit
Get a TD-8 instead, I see them on craigslist and fb marketplace.
I found the deal of a lifetime a barely used elise's strike pro se with the 20-in kick drum. And The four tops not to mention a nice big fat 14 inch snare that comes on its own. snare stand the dude threw an iron Cobra hi-hat stand. 2k e even

bought a used Alesis DM8 pro and 2 additional sets (pad brands unknown). I got an additional Ion brain, but I have more pads than outputs!

I've got a TD-6 with an extra tom and cymbal. I'd like to update the setup. I was thinking about getting a TD-10 until I saw your video. What drum modules would still work with the PD-6 and PD-120 pads? How big are the gaps in sample quality between the different drum modules? I'm thinking about getting a used module on eBay.
Td10s are fine. I found one in excellent shape for $750.

I can buy a used set for 800$-1000$ here in Israel. The alternatives are less equipped sets, like dtx 450 or Td4/6.
The used Td9-11k goes here for 1100$-1400$ and are less equipped as well.
This is my first drumset.

That is a reasonable price for a good and [responsive module] e-drum kit. Plus DTX pads never wear out if dropped, rained/liquid spilled on, on banged around. Mesh pads are very delicate [easily punctured] and wear out. Also, mesh has hot spots on their head center.
I have one of the original DTXtreme kits - that use actual drum skins - that can be adjusted for tension ( great ) but use it with the later module, and find it ideal for what I want - and yes they are very hard to find ...probably because few wish to sell them..
I don't think a ton of them were made. That's why they don't hit ebay often. Glad you're is still working for you :)

Yeah I know this is an old video, however as a gigging drummer having a decent electronic kit set up at your home ready to go is a must. I purchased a TD 10 kit last August of 2018, I pick up the kit with a amp for 1100 bucks. After playing it for 2 months, I did order a trigger replacement and new head for bass drum. If curious I purchased the trigger from UFO drums. As far as the software being old, the drum sounds in this module sound great. Are the sampled with dual mics and so on. I don’t know. I use Steven Slate drum plug in through a interface using Reaper for DAW. Has worked great for tracking midi. Whole other subject I guess. Yes you can buy a 400 dollar electronic kit. I highly suggest finding a kit like a old TD 10 to practice on. Peace ☮️

around 5 years ago i bought a used DTX extremeIIs for the bigger pads and better module than I had at the time and i didnt regret it one bit. ended up selling my old kit and it turned out to be a super cheap upgrade

i was fortunate to buy dtx700 full kit with extra XP100 pads but without rack system for $450. Best deal of my life lol.
What about the td12... i think is good although it's old, it has positional sensing like td30-50 all the roland hi-hat are compatible (vh11-12-13) also 3 way triggering cymbals the only downside is it doesn't have USB port
I snagged that exact Yamaha dtxtreme 3 with the hex rack in MINT condition for 1900 bucks on eBay. Still plays like new, definitely worth it and a solid kit to boot. The rack alone is worth over a grand and is super adjustable and solid. 👍🏻 the sound quality and features are still up to today's standards, and it's an 09', it's worth every penny. If you're picky like me, I'd recommend Yamaha or a flagship Roland. Alesis are junk, the modules are crap, I've owned em all at one point.
What I'm trying to say is, keep your eyes peeled on eBay and Reverb. You'd be surprised what people want to sell for a good price like Justin said.

Perhaps because my primary instruments are keyboard and guitar, my judgement of drum sounds is limited
so the Roland TD 20 sounds best to me although 15 year old with no usb connector, which is fine for me 'cos my PC sound device has got midi in and out.
I guess just like in the vehicle industry, new models reduce demand for older ones, and therefore price drops
I've found a Roland TD-12KX going second hand for $1500. Comes with the hi hat stand and everything looks in good condition just by looking at the photos. You guys think it's a good price?
I know this video is old but does anyone know how well the td10 triggers? I could not care less at all about sounds. I just want something with a bunch of i/o and midi.
would you recommend an electronic drum set or an acoustic with triggers...because then you can change out sounds through the triggers ???
I would go with electronic because you have the headphone option, more sounds available and if recording, no mics required!

Actually, I had just been looking at your 'Beginner's Drumsets' video yesterday, and looking in that $700-900 range. Came across a DTXreme III today on ebay for $1,299, plus $100 shipping. Yeah, I know, it's a lot more than what you recommend for a beginner, and yes, it is 10 years old, but I think with three zones on the cymbals, three zones on the snare and toms, plus a high hat on a real high hat stand might make that a good deal.
But, what do I know? :)
SOLID. That is a lifetime setup. You could shop around for a lesser Price but these are not easily found. You could invest in the latest and hot looking Alesis kits too. Yet Yamaha has the great build quality as does the overpriced Rolands. The earlier kits have even better builds and quality control IMO anyways you look at it. Know that MESH pads FAIL eventually and sooner than you think. Yamaha pads are more robust and so rugged with great responsiveness.

65 Drums There's an occasional dropped note and some minor cross talk. I haven't yet figured out if it's the pads or just a setting still in need of adjustments. I am loving them though. Your channel has actually been an invaluable resource while I've been venturing into this newfound land. Hahaha even using your iRig trick to record my covers! Keep doing what you do man!!

I got a Roland TD 10 drum module I paid about 300 on eBay ( I want a Roland lol and I did not have alot of money) I had some alesis dm5 pro pad and I upgraded the bass drum pad to the Roland TK for 200 new and use real cymbals

Hell yeah im doin the same thing but i had an acoustic kit witht he hihat cradh and ride cymbals, hi tom , low tom, and bass drum , cowbell for effect :). Then my dad helped me dig out his roland td-6 electronic drumset and i rigged a combination of the full electric drumset plus the acoustic bass drum , acoustic snare, hi tom & low tom .i just blended it right in. After i mad a cusom sound kit with all the pads it slams now lmao

I just sold my DTXtreme III a month ago for about the price you said. I'm just curious about the emphasis you place on the sounds being "dated" on some of the older drum modules or such. I understand that newer sounds are getting closer to sounding like real drums, but I haven't always been concerned with the sounds as long as it sounds good to my ear. Maybe I don't know as much about e-drums as I thought, but I always thought that as long as the drummer playing the set was competent, it would sound good. Please explain
+The_Evergrey_Toa I get what you're saying, and the drumset does sound good. But I'm comparing those sounds to what's currently available today. When they are charging $2500 for an 8 year old drumset, It better sound incredible.
You are absolutely on solid ground. The DTXtreme III has the same internals and convincing sounds as the excellent DTX900 module. The DTX pricing is extremely affordable compared to the also excellent Roland products. Because anyone individual wants and promotes [yet may not actually NEED] a different brand at an exorbitant price does mean anyone should follow in their footsteps of personal opinions.
