If you have a TD 17, sell your pads and replace them with the PD105 and the PD85 pads, you will find the difference to be night and day. I have played the TD20 module through a PA, but not the TD 12. If the TD 12 is a mini TD 20, then it will sound exceptional for stage work. Further, you can always route it through Superior Drummer, to acquire even better sounds. Additionally, you can purchase a Midi to USB interface and connect the TD12 to your laptop.
I totally agree. TD12 kit is basically TD20 with couple less inputs and sliders. It has exactly same OS and soundsets, which is very good even by today's standard.
This video is packed with so much useful (and correct!) info about the TD12. In particular I can add that yes I have removed the bottom bar of the rack, converted to a Yamaha acoustic kit with Rdrums and Jobeky triggers and am using the TD12 module with Addictive Drums 2 and it's such an improved experience! If you're thinking of converting, just do it, so much good info out there like Vdrum Tips, thanks man, I've learnt so much from you!
@@samueldette6401 Honestly? Not really. Its been 2 years, and I enjoy playing it once I got used to the pads. What really helped was getting DrumTec TD17 Module sounds. Loaded those in and the kit sounds super realistic compared to before and especially the cymbals now sound almost too good to compare to actual cymbals. Definitely such a great kit and very portable and easy to setup.
TD-12 for life 😎🤘🏻 Seriously, I still recommend it for people on a budget when they want to trigger VST. There’s still no module with a better price-value-ratio out there.
Is the TD 12 still the best bang for buck value when it comes to triggering Superior Drummer 3? Or should I go for the TD20W or 20X or TD30? Tried the eDRUMIN10 but that trigger Interface is to nerdy for me, can’t dial in the settings correctly
Hello and awesome video. i have a question, on my td-12 on the snare drum i only can play in the centre of the head. could you show me how to set up better to be able to play on the entire snare head?
Thank you very doing this video. I have had this kit for 10 years, and play it every day when home. The only thing I have had to replace is one rubber hoop on a rack Tom, as I had some set up as a cymbal. After finally destroying the head on the kid-85, I went and bought a kd-9, and actually prefer the feel, big enough for double-kick, and barely moves!! I have destroyed rugs and floors with those spiked feet in the 85. My module does have the lines in the display screen, but totally useable and works no issues. For the past 1.5 years I have been triggering with Superior drummer 2, and it’s awesome. NOTE: Due to the lack of USB, I highly recommend buying the Roland UM-one midi to USB cable. It’s not cheap, but works damn near flawlessly. I have been wondering for years what would be best pads and pieces to use for those additional two aux inputs to fill this out, and our customization ideas sound perfect! Bigger snare (though I never really though it was too small...) and the extra Tom, and a better ride which gives way to another crash..awesome! Thanks again!

@Layne Lane Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
legs of kd-85 have spikes u can screw out or just use foot pedal spikes to keep it from moving. worked for me for about 10 years, never had issues with moving kick using spikes. Td-12 is amazing module with 3 trigger ride and hihat foot splashes. Just need to upgrade tom pads and the feels like real drums
The clamp on the kid-85 that holds the arm that the legs attach to also fits the Roland rack... I just dropped the center brace of the rack and clamped the kid-85 right to it...kick literally can’t move.. just gotta adjust the Tom mounts to work for you since the kick is now attached in a spot a little farther
I have the td12kx, lost the love for it, but now back at it again. Just want some more realistic real time sounds for practicing. I tried SD2.0 but still had some input lag
I played for years on my TD 12. It was a special edition from Drum Tec. It came with the VH 12 Hihat and 2 pd 105 and 125 pads. After a few years I bought a Drum Tec Pro snare and sold the TD 12 module. I'm still using the rack from the TD 12. You were on my channel in the past. Now I bought a new Drum Tec kit but I will keep on using the drum rack. Great video and the TD 12 was really awesome, and I never had issues with my VH 12 in combination with the TD 12. Brilliant video, thinking of upgrading my td 11 module with the td 12. I found it second hand for £385 which is a great price considering it's features and I only trigger VST and never usually focus on the module's on-board sounds.
That's a good price. But you need cables too. I'd do the same though. The TD-12 is a much better VST trigger. You probably can even get 280 pound for your TD-11.
Yeah exactly, if I do make the trade off/upgrade I'll probably buy the cables from drum tec, since they sell them with the names of each pad, ie: hi hat, kick, snare, etc

True, but still, the pads are not ideal and if I have to compare the 8” pads, the PD-85 is still a better choice for me. I really like the PDX-12 tough.

Lorenzo Franchini All I can say is I have never had a problem with my display, I guess it's just pot luck, as far as the sounds go; I've never used any module that had more than 2 or 3 bass or snare drum samples that I really liked, but at least you can modify them in the td12 and the onboard sliders make it ideal for live work. Great video! Very informative as always. Could I add extra inputs by slaving an additional TD-12 module instead of ddrum DDTI as your example shows? Would it work similarly?
I just setup my roland td-17kvx and I have that same extra midi module, too bad I can't use it, then again, I can pick up this module for under $400 on ebay!
Awesome, I've seen some people like that guy with his awesome metal edrum kit, who pair two of these babies togeather and they plug in a thousand pads! And maybe even use it with VST. One of the most underrated modules ever!
Oh yes, Fake Smile Revolution! He uses 2 of them, I know. His set is awesome. He did not see the point of buying newer ones as VST drummer. He is right though. Why spend 2k on Roland TD-25s when he can get 2 TD-12 for 1K? :D
Vdrum Tips definatelly, currently I'm an owner of a TD25KV drumset and using Superior Drummer 3. So if I want to expand my set a bit more I'll have to buy something like a TD30 because there are no TD12 modules left to buy, except used which I do not like, I'm not a guy who buys really used stuff. Safe to say, awesome video!
LeToplache007 I came across many TD-12 module. They are where all in good condition. A few scratches, but that’s it. I buy ONLY used:D I am the opposite of you:D
Vdrum Tips Hello sir I am looking to buy my second roland and wanted to ask you a couple of things firstly is the td17kvx a better option for just home practicing or are they about the same level how are their sounds compared? is the td12 too outdated? and do these 2 sets have the same cymbals thank you so much.
how is the triggering compared to the newer models (td25, 30, ...)? as you said, the td12 supports positional sensing but it seems to me it only distinguishes 2 zones on the snare (center and outer) 10:12
Great video man! For the same price, would you get this (without hi-hat) or would you rather choose a Millenium MPS-750/850? This would be my 1st drum, so I'd use it to learn the instrument & practice quietly. Thanks!!
Thanks for the video. However i cant figure out how to remap cymbals. All i need to is to change ride to crash and crash to ride. Help would be appreciated.
I have an custom/upgraded version of the TD12 kit (with KD120, large ride, VH12 HH, large snare, etc), alongside the actual TD12 module, and i love it !
Hi,i am using vh11 with td12 but i never had a nice sensitive and perfect performance like you did in this video.Could you please share the settings you are using including advanced please?thanks so much
stikkman61 It is the most popular e-drum module according to my polls, I have one aswell. I see it as kind of an industry standard. However, even the TD-30 is not needed for certain types of drummers. Some are good with a TD-12 or 20. It depends on the individuals budget:)
would you recommend to sell my td9v2 module in order to get a second hand td12? I never use the on board songs; only superior drummer 2. I have pd 125 &105 pads and vh-11 / cy-15 cymbals
Camilo Venegas The TD-12 has better triggering capabilities. It is definitely an improvement, however I would do that but only with Superior Drummer 3, not with version 2.
I tell everyone this! Somehow everyone discredits this unit and swears by the td-17 which is pretty close in price now on the secondary market. The sounds kinda suck but you can tweak them and get em sounding decent if you take the time to dial in eq ,compression, and all the other editing features available. For $400-$600 range I’d take the td-12 over a td-17 all day
Hi. Lovely video about my trusty td12. Questions:. How do you connect it to pc/mac? By midi to usb cable directly or through a sound interface ( say Presonus, Focusrite or even Roland capture )? How do you then update to the latest version of the firmware ? Can you detail the whole procedure please ? Thanks !!!!!!
jeffroganesh Well that depends on the interface. I cannot describe the update procedure of any possible interface:) The best way is to go to the website of the interface manufacturer and check for updates. They most likely publish a workflow.
In the td-12 is there any other way of updating the firmware other than using usb to midi cable? And if there isn't, is there any other cable (cheaper than the original Roland's) that you recommend?
A friend of my guitar player is selling this kit as best offer. How much should I offer him ? This is in Canadian dollars. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. Thanks for the demo review. Well done !
drummerjen You need a usb midi interface for it. I am releasing a video soon, however, there is an instruction on the Roland site. Google it and read trough the steps. It is a very risky update. Doing it wrong can kill the module. I did it twice though, worked well.
Do you think the TD-12 is better than the TD-11 in terms of dynamics and triggering? I use the TD-11 with SD3 and I’m thinking if I should upgrade to the TD-12 to have better expressiveness to take advantage of the Drum-tec Pro snare I just bought. Would I get better expressiveness or are more inputs and Positional Sensing all I would get? - not that these are bad things 😄
Lorenzo Franchini The TD-12 is more expressive, however also slower in terms of latency. It does make sense in your case, because of the snare and SD3. But keep in mind, the TD-12 sounds are not as good and the module is from 2005-2012, while the TD-11 is from 2012-2017.
Hello, great video, very detailed ! I got this kit and I was wondering : can I put my own samples that I've buy on the internet ? Like the Buster Odeholm drum kit for exemple ?
@@Vdrumtips1 Hello, I seen a video called a video called "Badass Metal Drum Kit converted to E drum" when the guy use TD12 module to connect a PC to play with the kit with his own sound. So , if I got my presets on FL Studio, and then connect my kit in midi, could I play with my own drum presets ? Or should I use another logiciel ? Thanks for answer man ;)
The Roland TD-12KV and the Millenium MPS-850 have the same amount of parts and the rest is similar too. Of course the Roland has better build quality, more sounds and a slightly better module but how's it that the Roland is well over $2000 and the Millenium about $650? Because their physical difference is not as great as the price difference.. Btw, I've combined a Millenium MPS-850 with an Alesis Turbo Mesh on one rack. Wann see that?
If you don't need lots of cymbals/toms, go with TD-12. I had a 12 module but sold it and got a 20 when I wanted to add more cymbals (unnecessary really). They're very similar.
Hi Mr vdrum I have a td4 module connected to an acoustic kit with piazo transducers. All works well except the 14 inch floor tom which has kind of double hit I suppose, I cannot tweak it out, can you think what I might not be adjusting?, great vids by the way.Chris.
Chris Bell Bigger shells are always more tricky to trigger. I would recommend a quality trigger (R-Drums or RT-30) and a good mesh head (Roland , Drum-tec). IN the module: Download the user manual and learn all trigger parameters. Try to understand them and you will be able to cancel the double hits.
Thanks for that, the manual is a good idea lol, (I actually have one written on paper lol)last night I cured it with some rubbish practice pads I purchased, placed between the head and rim but, this increased the volume immensely and not really acceptable, still less than acoustic kits though (this might help people with the Yamaha ead10 mesh heads scenario) thanks again for sparing the time, Chris.
There are some people on UA-cam that show how LCD screens can be fixed. I will try this method when i get a chance. However, the KD-85 replacement parts are still available. So no problem there.
@@Vdrumtips1 I tried to get the Module repaired and the technician informed me that there's nothing that can be done for the screen which is bummer cuz the module still works... Now I'm considering maybe a TD-30 Module instead of rebuying a potential down the road broken td-12. I also think about the TD-17 but I dunno yet.
@@AlexandreC2100 I bought a TD-17 Module which came with a Bluetooth feature and a USB plug. I still have the TD-12 module lying around. Kinda forgot about it. The only ''downside'' with the TD-17 model is that it has 1 plug for all the pads except 2 extras. It means that some cables are a bit stretched out cuz of my wider rack setup but it really does a good job.
Great video! Just upgraded from td-4 to td-12. What a difference! Love having individual volume knobs. I'm thinking of getting the vh-10 but Roland hasn't said if it'll work with td-12.
Great man! Thanks. I'm confused in which kit I should buy. A used TD-11KV (cheaper) , a used TD-12 or a brand new TD-17KV (too expensive). What do u say?
It is always a good idea to upgrade from CY-13 to CY-15. However, it depends on the way you want to use the module. So there is no general answer to your question. Check the strengths of the TD-12 and see if those match your way of using it.
I’ve had one of these from new… Went to check out the current line up in a drum shop. The rack joints on the new ones are plastic junk, and the mounts for the drums look flimsy too, even on the top of the range models. Price has stayed the same, quality has gone way down!
Tien Davis It is subjective as to what better sounds are but it depends what you want to use the module for, if you want to play live the TD 12 is a better option because of the onboard sliders. The importance of having your own mixer on stage cannot be overstated, and yeah as everyone says; spend some time editing the sounds to your liking.
Great video! You said everything I experience with my TD12kv! I've expanded it, changed out the ride for its bigger brother and use it constantle with EZDrummer 2 and SuperiorDrummer 3. I even have my old TD6 attached to it to expand it with more cymbals! Here is a link to a video: ua-cam.com/video/cPaLz7QVrlw/v-deo.html

LeToplache007 I came across many TD-12 module. They are where all in good condition. A few scratches, but that’s it. I buy ONLY used:D I am the opposite of you:D
Vdrum Tips we all buy what suits us best, I personally don't like buying used because it may be broken
How do i change the midi mapping inside this module? When i plug it in GarageBand the closed hi-hat doesn't have a sound.
Would you recommend purchasing a used TD-12 module over the new TD-17? I'll be triggering acoustic drums to VST. Thanks!
Depends on the usage. VST triggering is a good argument to buy a TD-12. Another one would be expandability.
Vdrum Tips Hello sir I am looking to buy my second roland and wanted to ask you a couple of things
firstly is the td17kvx a better option for just home practicing or are they about the same level
how are their sounds compared? is the td12 too outdated?
and do these 2 sets have the same cymbals thank you so much.
Still have one but not playing it anymore. One day I will re-surrect it though
I would probably sell it if I would not use it.
how is the triggering compared to the newer models (td25, 30, ...)?
as you said, the td12 supports positional sensing but it seems to me it only distinguishes 2 zones on the snare (center and outer) 10:12
What's the size of this drum? How much space do I need for it?
Wow amazing video! Had no clue the 12 was do good still 😃 thanks a lot
Great Video. All good things to consider.
Very informative. Thanks
Great video man!
For the same price, would you get this (without hi-hat) or would you rather choose a Millenium MPS-750/850?
This would be my 1st drum, so I'd use it to learn the instrument & practice quietly.
Thanks!!
This is vastly superior.
Thanks for the video.
However i cant figure out how to remap cymbals.
All i need to is to change ride to crash and crash to ride.
Help would be appreciated.
Just change the sound of each separatly, you can't "exchange" but you can change both to the other
Great review. What happened to your custom drum set with the TD-30? Is this old video footage?
This is new footage and I still have my Custom TD-30.
Yep that hihat issue . Always needs to retighten
I have an custom/upgraded version of the TD12 kit (with KD120, large ride, VH12 HH, large snare, etc), alongside the actual TD12 module, and i love it !
Nice, I would have done the same. Great upgrades.
Hi,i am using vh11 with td12 but i never had a nice sensitive and perfect performance like you did in this video.Could you please share the settings you are using including advanced please?thanks so much
Make sure your module is updated to 1.11. Else I am using a standard setting. I set it up like written in the manual.
What are your thoughts about the TD-30 module - I think it's the best overall V-drum module on the market today, thoughts?
stikkman61 It is the most popular e-drum module according to my polls, I have one aswell. I see it as kind of an industry standard. However, even the TD-30 is not needed for certain types of drummers. Some are good with a TD-12 or 20. It depends on the individuals budget:)
Vdrum Tips I like it but it's way too overpriced.
Awesome video. Very informative 🙂
do you think this module would work well with the ATV hats and rest of their cymbals line?
No, I know it does not work so well with ATV hi-hats. The ATV hi-hats are more for the aD5 and Pearl mimic.
would you recommend to sell my td9v2 module in order to get a second hand td12?
For $400-$600 range I’d take the td-12 over a td-17 all day
I agree, I would also rather take this one.
Hi, could you please tell me how to set up the VH-13 with the TD-12?
And if there isn't, is there any other cable (cheaper than the original Roland's) that you recommend?
no, you need a MIDI USB adapter. Try this one: amzn.to/2EfcCii
Could you do a video on the Roland td17kvx vs td25kv
A friend of my guitar player is selling this kit as best offer. How much should I offer him ? This is in Canadian dollars. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. Thanks for the demo review.
Well done !
Halli ich möchte diese Schlagzeug kaufen wie teuer sin sie?...
How do you update the module? Does it have USB to connect to a computer?
drummerjen You need a usb midi interface for it.
I Play it every day👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Hello, great video, very detailed ! I got this kit and I was wondering : can I put my own samples that I've buy on the internet ?
Like the Buster Odeholm drum kit for exemple ?
Mr Str Thanks, no, the TD-12 does not have this feature.
@@Vdrumtips1 ho... sad
But thanks for the anwser !!!

Hey, kannst du mal ein Video machen in dem du erklärst wie man die Firmware beim Td12 updated? Er hat kein usb Port
Tip Too Video! Thanks 🙏
TD-12kx?
what is the best sounding electronic drum module or drum set ? and what set is the quietest set for playing in a condo ?
The TD-17KV with a Roland KT-10 pedal.
Review the td10, could be interesting
Hi, Mr. Tips! I love your videos!
Would you mind telling me which module you think is better-the TD-12 or the TD-20?
Thanks!!
He says in the video that the TD-12 is better.
If you don't need lots of cymbals/toms, go with TD-12. I had a 12 module but sold it and got a 20 when I wanted to add more cymbals (unnecessary really). They're very similar.
What's the hihat stand you are using this called
It has the pedal beard AS my bass drum pedals
It is a Pearl H-900
So what can be done for the Screen ?
Is there still replacement parts for the KD-85 or it'll be wise to move to another pad ?
There are some people on UA-cam that show how LCD screens can be fixed. I will try this method when i get a chance. However, the KD-85 replacement parts are still available. So no problem there.
@@Vdrumtips1 I tried to get the Module repaired and the technician informed me that there's nothing that can be done for the screen which is bummer cuz the module still works...
Now I'm considering maybe a TD-30 Module instead of rebuying a potential down the road broken td-12. I also think about the TD-17 but I dunno yet.
@@EmondJeremie same problem. What did you do?
@@AlexandreC2100 I bought a TD-17 Module which came with a Bluetooth feature and a USB plug.
I still have the TD-12 module lying around. Kinda forgot about it.
The only ''downside'' with the TD-17 model is that it has 1 plug for all the pads except 2 extras.
It means that some cables are a bit stretched out cuz of my wider rack setup but it really does a good job.
@@EmondJeremie theres a company called WOT tech that makes replacement screens for td-20. Not sure if they fit the 12 also.
Great video! Just upgraded from td-4 to td-12. What a difference! Love having individual volume knobs. I'm thinking of getting the vh-10 but Roland hasn't said if it'll work with td-12.
Oh yes, that is a huge jump. I guess the VH-10 works. But I am not 100% sure. Would be great if someone tries:D
Just a question:
Can u do rimshots on this kit? And this kit is sensitive to side sticks?
Thanks.
Yes, you can do that with every Roland set, even with the very old entry level ones.
Great man! Thanks.
I'm confused in which kit I should buy.
A used TD-11KV (cheaper) , a used TD-12 or a brand new TD-17KV (too expensive).
What do u say?
Shame! Shame! HAHA. No worries. Great video btw. TD12 is actually really powerful
Is it worth it if I sell my TD-11 module and get a TD-12 Module?
Also, sell my CY-13R to buy a CY-15R?
It is always a good idea to upgrade from CY-13 to CY-15. However, it depends on the way you want to use the module. So there is no general answer to your question. Check the strengths of the TD-12 and see if those match your way of using it.
Does anyone know how you would record audio with a Roland TD-12KV?
With an audio interface and a cable:)
The td12 is much better than the td11 ?
It depends on the way you want to use it. Both modules are made for different user types.
I’ve had one of these from new… Went to check out the current line up in a drum shop. The rack joints on the new ones are plastic junk, and the mounts for the drums look flimsy too, even on the top of the range models. Price has stayed the same, quality has gone way down!
Yeah the ride definitely needs to be larger
What drum module has better sounds? Td 9 or td 12?
I'd say TD-9. But you can edit the TD-12 sounds.
Vdrum Tips thanks a lot
Tien Davis
It is subjective as to what better sounds are but it depends what you want to use the module for, if you want to play live the TD 12 is a better option because of the onboard sliders.
The importance of having your own mixer on stage cannot be overstated, and yeah as everyone says; spend some time editing the sounds to your liking.
One of my goals in life is to save enough money to buy a flagship Roland kit lol
Are you a voice actor? You sound like the guy in the intro of Apex Legends
Wow Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the drums!? I didn’t know this! 🤷🏼♂️
❤❤❤❤❤
How much is this ?
Diemen Sniep How much it cost? Well I got it for 1200€ on the second hand market. But the price depends on the seller, the condition and the country.
Would the td 12 module work with atv drums? Would you get this module over the atv ad5 module?
Joe Rainey Yes, all Roland module work with ATV drums. The hi-hat might not be as good as a VH-12 hi-hat. It is worth a try.
Nice video! And great setup!
