Resetting your trip counter can help too when filling up
How do you do that
I always hated this on my 2005 Honda Shadow Spirit. So glad my Phantom has the gas light instead. It's not a good feeling when you are going 70 mph down the freeway and you lose all power with traffic barreling down on you, then you have to blindly shove your hand under the tank at highway speeds trying to flip that thing over. And then the always dreaded forgetting to flip it back after refilling. Terrible ancient technology that should never be used in 2017. Just my 2 cents.
yeah its absolutely ridiculous not having a fuel gauge, makes no sence at all.
THIS JUST GOD DAMN HAPPENED TO ME TODAY ON MY SHADOW.. hence why I’m on this video now lol
That sounds difficult and scary. I was going 5 mph and it was scary enough at an intercection.
Fuel lights malfunction way too much for me. I have been completely stranded because of fuel light malfunction issues. At least with a reserve setting I know when to fill up, and I know that I still have fuel to get to a gas station.
One of my favorite YT channels. Love every vid. Keep up the great work!
Gray Bailey thanks gray, if that's really a picture of you. Then you are my beard role model
Yep, that's my beard. I'm at 18 months now and actually cut off 4inches last week.facebook.com/George-Bruno-Luxury-Hair-Experience-1699093200318262/?notif_t=page_fan¬if_id=1493331798729451
Amen.
always check your reserve switch before taking off too. jokers sometimes turn it to reserve when you aren't looking.
Guilty.
that`s when you slap the person for touching another persons bike haha
Thank you brother 🙏🏽 God Bless
Happened to me just days ago. Thank God for that reserve.
Thanks for sharing. Very helpful video for a new rider.
Thanks this helped me!
Thank you and I’m big fan
Super helpful brother!
Have the exact same bike at home,My first motorcycle. watching your test ride videos helped me find what I was looking for. Thanks for the videos always enjoy watching.
I’m about to take my 2001 Suzuki intruder VS800GL on a 800 mile trip this helps a lot since my bike don’t have a gauge
Very help full
Ran out of fuel at 1:35 a.m coming back from work and It was kinda of getting started to rain then I remember this guy talking about fuel reserve, so I went on youtube and started watching it while on the bike
Shawn's pretty cool. SRK dude.
Thanks bro
That’s one good looking bike right there I have the same one
10 to 15 miles? Try 20 to 22 miles. The owner's manual for my 2000 Honda Shadow Sabre 1100cc says the reserve part of the tank is .58 gallons. Since they get roughly 40mpg, that's about 20 miles you have before you're completely empty. ~ Also, on a 2000 model, all the way down is ON, straight up is RESERVE, and halfway in between, facing forward, is OFF.
Good to know 😎👍
What happens if u never use the reserve fuel. does it go bad after a long time ?
I have a lexmoto venom 125 and new to riding, my gas is on the dashboard and flashes and sometimes on emergancy and back to 2 bars, how do i know if i need gas or oil? Very new to riding! Feedback would be great
Hey man....
I am a disciple of Christ AND just bought an aero 750.
Thanks for this.
Is there a hack or mod to add for an aeroto ad a gadget?
I'm brand new to riding, I have an 08 bonneville. I didn't know about the reservation tank... while riding it sputtered and died...I fell off and broke the clutch. Maaan I felt stupid and defeated when I found out about the reservation tank....man.
does it apply to all motorcycle?
Great video, I just bought an old 1996 Suzuki Intruder and wanted to make sure I was doing it correctly (I was). However, here's a question, lets say you ran out of gas, put it on reserve, get to the gas station, where would you leave the switch to fill up, on reserve? And lets say you forgot and put it back at ON, the reserve is now affected, would I just put it back on reserve for the gas to go down then back to ON? Thanks in advance :)
From what he said, it’s not two tanks, just that you switch to a shorter intake hose to use “reserve”. So it wouldn’t matter when you switched back to “on”. Probably good to always have a filling routine so you don’t forget to set your petcock to “on” before getting back on the road.
With the Shadows, you'll have around 0.7 gallons of gas left in the reserve. You can get roughly 30 miles on the reserve but don't test your luck at highway speeds, fill that puppy up as soon as you can. :D
+Hunting The Game good to know thanks
Hunting The Game on my 06 shadow when i switched it to reserve from on it still wouldnt fire back up like i didnt have enough gas. does that mean the petcock is bad
Not necessarily. There are a couple of things to try to rule out the petcock or the reserve fuel tube: Fill the tank back up and switch the petcock back to on. Fire up the bike and then switch the petcock back to reserve. If it cuts out, either the Petcock is bad or the fuel line for the serve portion of the tank is clogged.
I think I'll make a video on this topic in the very near future once I'm done with the rebuilding carburetors for fun ;)
I inherited a 1984 Honda V30 Magna that has either off or on for the fuel... no reserve setting. It has a fuel light that stays on when the tank is full. My solution is to stop riding that bike and I bought a 1975 Honda CB550F that has the features that the V30 is lacking (kick start and some other things) but it doesn't go as far between fill-ups. Now I'm looking for a bigger gas tank that will fit my 1975 bike. A 6-7 gallon tank would be nice as long as it isn't too bulky and "in the way", but I don't know where to find what I'm looking for. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions?
What about a bike with fuel injection with no gauge? For example...the Honda Fury. What was Honda thinking not adding a fuel gauge? Would adding one really take away from its so called "minimalist" image? I love that bike but heartbreaking it doesn't have a simple fuel gauge. That should be standard equipment on every modern bike
agreed
When filling the tank, do you have to fill reserve, switch it to “on”, then fill the actual tank? Is it actually two different tanks your fuel comes from? Or when you fill your tank does it fill the tank and then overflow into reserve, automatically filling both? I’m getting my first bike tomorrow and for some reason can’t wrap my head around the reserve lol
He shows it in the video, 2:13, the reserve just sucks fuel from a lower point where there is still gas
How do u restart that bike after u run out, I’m having a hell of a time
Gotta say it, Sean's beard is amazing.
+MattkovGaming yes !!! That's one for me and none for Caleb
Old video but worth trying. I have a 06 v star 650. Was riding home today with about 90 miles on the trip odometer. Ran out of gas. Nothing in the reserve. It was in the ON position prior to running out. Pushed it to the gas station about half a mile away but I would like to avoid it happening again. Still working on getting it tuned up but is it just a finicky system? I know I need to adjust the idle control and more than likely rejett. Looking for other possibilities. Thanks
Dang...if we could a drop in fuel gauge. 😊
Actually this only partially solves the larger problem. Normally you should set your odometer to zero when you fill up. Then monitor how many miles you have ridden . However Honda makes the odometer gauge which is covered by a plastic(polyethylene) that becomes deteriorated by the sun and later becomes difficult to read during the day. I have talked to Honda service. There is no real fix ,short of buying a new speedometer . So if you're more than a few miles from gas when you switch to reserve ,you're screwed
“Aktcbually”
So if you ran out of fuel on your bike and you put it on reserve when you fill it with gas should you fill it on reserve or on
Fill up with it on either. Just remember to put it back to on after filling
Hi, i ran out of gas yesterday, my shut off value was in the on potition i swithed to res and there was no gas in tank. not sure what i need to fix, any ideals.
If it's my daily comment do I need to shut the gas off every night? Does the fuel pump or anything overflow? I got a 2002 honda vt1100
No, you dont have to shut off the fuel it wont hurt anything by leaving it on but it's a good practice to turn it off. If you ever develop a leak in your fuel line it would prevent your gas tank from emptying all over your bike and garage floor. But it wont harm the bike if you leave it on.
I didn't quite get when you should turn it off. Can someone explain?
A petcock is a small shut-off valve used to control the flow of liquid or gas: on, off, and reserve. The reserve position accesses the bottom portion of the fuel tank, where you want to get gasoline asap! The wise riders always look before venturing out, and make sure it is set to on, this way if you run out of gas- you still have that reserve amount of gas left in the tank. (There is no seperate reserve tank) Needing to switch to reserve, should be very rare. It is just there because we are all human, and sometimes don't top off the tank enough. The position of the petcock does not matter when you are filling up your tank, does not effect how much gas goes in the tank. Just be sure at some point, before or after filling up, you turn back to on before heading back out.
Today ran out of gas on HD 883 and opened the valve to reserve everything worked. Got gas and only took 2 gal should have been 4 gal with this tank. the first time it did this... what happened? Does anyone know why?
God damn... learned something new... and here i just walked my happy ass to the gas station to buy a can and some gas :((((( Now I understand why I still heard some sloshing around in there.
Lol I had mine on reserve the first and last time I ran out of gas. Luckily I wasn't too far from a gas station so I just put it in neutral and started walking it about a half a mile
8 minutes? They must have edited because this was only 3:27- great info as I had no idea how the reserves worked!
I was expecting something els lol title mislead me
Can you install Fuel gauges on older bikes
That's what i want to know too
@@sle2979did you ever find out, i have an 08 shadow aero
Stop at every gas station !!! Duh!
no guage or petcock
Did I hear a family of ducks? Lol
Me also
Seriously? Why the hell wouldn't they just make a fkn fuel gauge for it in the first place
Because back in the day, people kept track of how far they could go on a tank of gas. A fuel sending unit is also expensive which drives the price of the bike up making it unaffordable to some of their potential customers. I'm going to pick up a bike tomorrow that has a faulty fuel sending unit that costs close to $100.00, and will take over an hour to replace. A mechanic will probably charge at least $100.00. The bike should go around 20 miles on reserve which should be more than enough to get to a gas station. I've never had a bike with a gas gauge on it, so I'll never miss what I've never had to begin with. However, there is a blinking light that is probably going to irritate me until it dies.
The good way to not run out gas it
no driving it
I am currently on the side of the road, and my fuel is already in reserve… oops.
This video was 8 minutes long with 5 minutes of content lol ?
Dragged out the render section a little too far in whatever program they use. lol
Bubba Maloy I'm showing 3:27 long
