    Aw, I’m so jealous! I’ve always wanted a tank like that! You have such healthy green plants too Jeff! Keep it up! 👍

    Had a 30 gallon as a kid filled with platys, tons of different kinds and for a while the local pet stores were buying them from me (had about 15 huge buckets of extra babies that couldn’t fit in the main tank…it got bad) but it was always my favourite. All the different colours and patterns, once or twice I’ve gotten some babies that had absolutely no colour like it was albino; they were incredibly different than the silver mollys for example, even the eyes had no colour. Sometimes all black ones would pop up but my favourites were the blue/green lantern looking ones before they got largely popular. Never saw them before but I had a big chonky yellow mickey who had a random batch of them, though not as shiny and way more green.
    I’ve recently got my little rat hands on a 20 gallon tank that I gotta fix up but I’m hoping to get a few varieties of platys again, I’m a little too scared to try a different kind of fish it never really works out for me

    I also love livebearers Jeff & thoroughly enjoy your videos, I also love that you take the time to answer everyone's questions so thank you very much. My favorite livebearers are balloon mollies but I don't see any in your videos.

      Thanks. I've tried mollies a few times but for some reason haven't had success. Never had balloon mollies. The two types I had were sailfins and black mollies. I do have future plans to get mollies again. There's a warm spring near me that has mollies and several species of aquarium fish. I intend to visit it and try to catch some to bring home when I get a chance.

    Love the way you think! Every time I go to Petco their like don’t mix them they’ll crossbreed and I’m like that’s what I want lol I want a mosquito fish guppy or platy or swordtail hybrid

    Love that green lantern. I have a 125g platy/variatus/molly/guppy tank. If I wanted to breed some of the platies and variatus to get mutts should I just put one male and one female in my 10g quarantine tank for awhile and then just remove the male?

    • @jeffsaquariumhobbyenjoymen9468
      @jeffsaquariumhobbyenjoymen9468  2 роки тому

      Sure, you could try that. I've been letting my livebearers mutt it up by colony breeding. But I've been meaning to try some selective mutt breeding like that using virgin females.

    Hi Jeff, Love your videos. Would you define " mutt " for me please & thank you.

    • @jeffsaquariumhobbyenjoymen9468
      @jeffsaquariumhobbyenjoymen9468  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Cheryl. Mutts are offspring of parents with random genes. They're not pure strains or line bred for the purpose of developing certain traits. Much like a dog or a cat that is a cross of multiple breeds would be a mutt. Mutt might even sound negative, but really isn't, just the difference from a pure breed. IMO mutts are better than pure strains as there's more variety instead of all looking the same.

    Doesn't the gourami attack the guppies? I have a 75g guppies/platy tank and thinking of getting a gourami. any advice?

    • @jeffsaquariumhobbyenjoymen9468
      @jeffsaquariumhobbyenjoymen9468  6 місяців тому

      No. I've kept a single gourami in several community tanks and haven't had any issues with aggression. I'm sure the gouramis have eaten guppy and platy fry when opportunities were presented, but I think they're definitely suitable in a community tank, especially a 75 gallon.

    The first platy you pointed out looks like a hybrid between a platy and a guppy. It resembles a female guppy, but with a lot of features of a platy.
    I know people say guppy x platy hybrids are impossible, but if you breed two species together enough eventually you'll get a successful hybrid.

    • @jeffsaquariumhobbyenjoymen9468
      @jeffsaquariumhobbyenjoymen9468  2 роки тому

      I believe it's a hybrid between a platy and a variatus platy. Two similar but different species: xiphophorus maculatus x xiphophorus variatus.

    • @rnldmanuel88
      @rnldmanuel88 2 роки тому

      No platies and guppies cannot breed doesn't matter how long they are together. Platies can only cross with sowrdtails not guppies moilles or mosquito fish.

    • @bluebowser3121
      @bluebowser3121 2 роки тому

      @@rnldmanuel88 They can breed, it's just incredibly unlikely they'll sire viable offspring. Unlikely hybrids are possible in the aquarium hobby. Genuses don't really mean much. Take a look at the case of American paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) and the Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) creating viable hybrids. Given enough attempts any hybrid can be possible especially when they are very similar in lifestyle and anatomy. One guy managed to breed two "genetically impossible" plants together to create the Yellow Peonies you see grown in gardens across the world today. He attempted the cross with various strains of the same species and did over 2,000 hand pollinations until successful.

    • @rnldmanuel88
      @rnldmanuel88 2 роки тому

      @@bluebowser3121 I will say this for the last time and I want you to get that through your thick head . Guppies and platies are two different families. Guppies are from the Poeciliidae family, while platies are from the Xiphophorus. guppies and platies can’t crossbreed, so no matter how hard you would like to have a guppy platy hybrid, it is impossible.

    The video quality is really bad. Could have been so much better just keeping the camera still

    • @jeffsaquariumhobbyenjoymen9468

      Sorry about that. To this point my videos are very amateurish. I just look at my tanks through the phone camera, record, and ramble. Kind of sloppy this way, I know. I get that more editing /production is generally preferred. But there is a percentage of people, albeit small, that these one take, unscripted, home videos appeal to. My audience simply appreciates fish and the hobby and isn't too concerned with video quality. I do expect to eventually learn to improve and polish some rough edges, maybe a 2023 resolution, but likely with refrain from trying too hard to pander to the masses.
