New Italian reseach explains how guppies, endlers and other livebearers avoid interbreeding with close family members. This information has amazing aquarium hobby implications, from meaning that we dont need to worry about inbred guppies as long as we introduce at least 2 blood lines. Also this shows that ultimately the female of the species is in almost total control of her offspring selection through cryptic female selection or choice. So how do they choose which mate's sperm packet will fertilize their eggs and reproduce with them? by using a chemical known as "OF" which slows the motility of sperm and thus allows specific sperm cells to fertilize the available eggs ahead of any less desirable ones.
the craziest part? no many how many times she is "violated by male guppies forcing themselves on her, she will be able to get rid of their DNA

This video over-hypes the impact of CFC. Yes, CFC has been found to bias paternity but only slightly and with lots of variation between individual fish. The video suggests that female guppies "wash out" 100% of unwanted sperm. According to the actual researchers, the average bias against inbred males was only 10% via CFC and OF (ovarian fluid). Paper documenting this is: Gasparini C and A Pilastro. 2011. 'Cryptic female preference for genetically unrelated males is mediated by ovarian fluid in the guppy.' Proc. Royal Soc. B. 278: 2495-2501.

I actually went off a paper that David Reznick sent me to read that a student of his published a bit more recently than 2011, I'll have to go read that one again as well. It followed the 2011 study on inbreeding and added the variable of nutrition and the carotenoid levels in the fish and environment. Genetics are crazy! I thought I had 2 male fancy guppies, and 10 Mutt Leopard guppies. Some how 2 years later I have 15+ male Japanese Blue (3 sword tail, 5 pin tail and 4 lyretails)l
endlers now . 6 delta tail Leopard guppies and 3 mosaic tail guppies. Females range from reds/blues/yellows and greens. 2 New females are Black Moscow guppies from a local breeder. I'm excited to see what their new babies will grow up to look like.

A big thumbs up! This is by far the most fascinating video for me that you have posted. I saw something in males I wanted to share that you may already know about. I had a female I kept away from males and fed her lots of varied foods including live baby brine shrimp. She had beautiful colors and was the largest female I have ever seen ( I just lost her 😥). I added her to the community tank when she was about 8 months old and every single male in the tank wanted her. They no longer chased any other females. I finally had to take her out because I would look in and there would be 4 to 6 males chasing her at a time. Someone told me it was because she was a new female but I also added three other unknown females at the same time and they were mostly ignored for this female. It was very interesting.

Hey Alex, thanks for sharing. Back in the early 60's when I started guppy breeding I had a guppy book that explained similar genetics. It also explained how to breed them if only starting with one pair. Breed mom & dad, breed daughters to dad and sons to mom. Then out of those offspring breed sister and brother. Next introduce new blood/genes to the line to avoid problems and deformities. I'm really interested to know how just a couple of pairs can constantly interbreed for generations without causing problems. Humm...
P.S. My wife is getting me started back in the hobby after a 20 year hiatus. ;)

Hi James. What you are referring to are the "Mendelian Laws of Inheritance'. Mendel made a very comprehensive study of inherited genes, colours, size behaviour, and so on in fish, birds and other animals. These laws are very accurate and are still very much in use today.
I just setup a big 55 gallon a 10g and a 2.5, I’m doing cobra females and endler (I have two bright yellow to blue two tip tails like you have and the wild looking red green black with black dot wild endlers with two fun red tales. I also have endler females with a black tail guppy with a bright pink front half and pink tip fins

So yes, inbreeding continues to threaten the captive ones. Imagine most pairs sold by backyard keepers and petshops are actually brothers and sisters of the same batch and they produce just as well but of lower quality and shorter life.

Think about it like this, if a male who is lively and colorful, and is easily hunted, one that has made it to adulthood is strong because it hasn’t gotten eaten even though it’s at a disadvantage

Interesting, I have a slightly different story though. I think the ones u discussed happens in more spacious environments. For me females do not really have a choice in a more controlled environment. Siblings do conception almost 100% in smaller tanks. So, there is no dumping of male material in there.
On multiple males impregnating, different clutches at once, I believe you. I did that experiment before and phenotypes came out with the appearance depending which male fathered it. But my theory is that it uses up all its eggs for the batch at the same time uses up just enough pocketed sperm to the amount of eggs and saves the rest of the sperm for the next batch of eggs.

the boys get to control 2 things...how flashy they are vs how fast they grow. So if it's a dangerous pond they decide to stay silver and put all energy into growing fast and growing big.... then change colors and sexually mature later...if theres no threats to fry then the males decide to grow small and slow but have super bright colors which attracts females and they mate younger

I started with 1 male guppy, and I think 2 females, and bred that line pure for 25 years, till my kid decided that they should have new friends. I had zero problems with inbreeding. I think that birds, also have no inbreeding problems. Could be that some embryos died in the womb, like high fins.
Yeah they avoid visible signs of inbreeding really well. Its when they start being born with crooked spines or babies that die within a day or two, that it usually first shows any issue
I saw a video on this study a couple of months back. Very interesting on how the females can save or reject sperm from males and that they remember who they mated with even a year later! That the females can retain sperm from the males they choose for up to and in some cases longer than a year.

Just picked up another pair from the Wet Spot. Ended up being a trio as a smaller female ended up in the bag too.
They are White Cross Endlers. I assume Cross in the name means they're hybrids? Can't find any info on White Cross.
I think it's due to a cross with the Silverado endler at some point, but I'm not sure either

I have a question that I hope doesn’t sound like anthropomorphising or sheer craziness, but, (I’m a newbie, so please excuse me), I have different colours of Guppy, 2 shimmering yellow etc. I have found that they hang out according to who looks most like them self. My Red tail one lost his counterpart & is not joining in with others. I put a female in a Perspex birthing tank & another of the same black & mauve stayed swimming by her side so obsessively that I moved her away gently to let her chill out, but she went straight back to keeping the other one company!
I figure if you can’t help me understand this, then who can hehe. But, any comments that may be an insight into this would be great!

Not a silly or strange question at all! They often do- infact tend to be attracted to their own color and body types. This is not universally true, however- in the wild guppies and endlers tend to be attracted to males with the most orange and a specific grouping of red, pink or orange dots..in the case of those wild fish, if turned out that the most scarce vitamins and nutrients in their diet were also those found in foods /fruits and insects with carotenoids and anthocyannins. So the males showing the best orange and red, also had more than enough of the beta-carotine and anthocyannins.
If I recall another scientific journal article, they tried to make the things associated with blue pigment -scarce in the diets and then the fish switched to preferring blue... but the bottom line was that the most healthy individuals usually had a set color pattern that depended on locations and resources available in their diet... so they tend to have presences for things like speed , stamina, size and muscle tone first, but also things like patterns (stripes in grassy areas vs. Spots in rocky streams and silver reflective bellies in open waters.
And in captivity, if they have all their nutrition met from fish foods, they seem to default at least 70% of the time to picking the most genetically similar tank-mates as long as they aren't first generation related

It sounds like you have a western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis).

She is large and has black vertical lines on her eyes. Also tiny black dots on her fins. Any ideas what she may be? Thanks! I enjoy your videos!! USA
Sorry, without a picture or link to a website that has a similar looking guppy, it's impossible to know for sure.
If you let me know if she has long or short fins, what base color or colors she has, if the dots are on just the tail rin vs the whole length and ideally you need to see her babies or the male she was mating with to get an idea of what she would produce.

@@Fishtory She is all clear with short fins that have the tiny dots on them. The vertical bars on her eyes extend down under her eyes, sometimes. The bars come and go under the eyes. She is about 1 1/2 inches long, so kinda large. She had babies as I was bringing her home from Petco. Two survived. She did not eat any. If I can get a pic of her, then I could send the pic to you. Her 2 babies are 1 month old today. They are getting the barring too, on their eyes. Thank you so much for replying!!

Hey mate so can I ask you a question. Since alot of people believe once a guppy is pregnant theres no point introducing a new male for a few rounds of birth since she can hold sperm. What I gathered from your video is that what I thought might be wrong and that infact she can at any point let go of stored sperm and let a new male breed with her and have his fry even if she was pregnant before ?
tats possible.I had a female(now dead)had fry which were grey and gold 50% each the grey ones were half black guppies while the gold were red coral Delta guppies.The same female gave birth to another group of fry the next month all good but when they grew up there were to grps one had a bluish Delta tail(my red coral Delta male) and snakeskined dorsal while the other had platanium dorsal and anal but had a red heart shaped tail(cool mutation from father which was heart shaped).So in total my guppy had 3 males sperms but containing 2 at a time.

B-4 they empty all of them to rebreed again to a NEW male?
totally, she may choose to use the first one's sperm for life basically, but any of between 3 and 7 (5 average) males can be stored and selected for the best fit for environmental and health conditions...if predation goes up, amazingly they'll pick a males sperm who has sundued color...however usually if they mated with an orange or red marking endler or guppy, they select that individual due to it being indicative of vitamin and mineral access
they can do it for life off one time... as my videos on female selective choice in livebearers shows, the female can have more babies at nearly anytime...sometimes they hold 4 or 5 mature fry and like 30 tiny ones from a newer mate ...so technically they could stay pregnant, however they tend to wait 45 to 60 days between fry batches and usually after 2 spawns with the first male, she'll switch it up..... ....jjust make sure to move all her fry because most likely you wont be able to tell which male's dna won, until they show color and the females will probably all look too similar in most lines to tell...so you gotta make sure none of those fry females grow up in that tank to contaminate it

Well I won't need to worry as much about inbreeding compared to other fish species, and if you had all red guppies it would be likely that they would be the ones to breed most with females since the females know it means they had a diet with enough nutrients to form those bold colors.
Are they ALL endlers in there? Or are some celestial Pearl danios? The fully spotted ones are confusing me.

Inter breeding is when you put a male to his daughter and so on, after 3or 4 mating the gene are same. You can do female to son mating .Male's will display to show his fit with good genes.
I like you. I started with a metallic blue bodied snake skin red tail guppy then bought yellow neon females 7 years ago then every year I introduced anew beautiful male every generation I got away from the original male. The blue dimmed and spots in tails are now starting to go away from my strain so now I'm doing the opposite being patient and looking for the traits I desire in females. Got more tanks bought a strain of females with blue fins and spots .after reading on guppy genetics I learned my mistakes are all from focusing on males not females. But all my females are large and colorful. Half the size of feeder gold fish

Back in the day I used those little box filters in 10 gallon tanks. Frequent water changes are key of course keeping water parameters and temp consistent. A variety of foods are also key, protein and vegetable. Enjoy!

This is not true i had 2 endler guppy species the santa Maria bleeding heart and the blue star endler i got 30 Fry and then the patents died because the heater in my shed broke and now they are breeding so they dont choose with what male they mate.
Ok, this story is not making sense due to missing info and spelling or grammar issues. But im guessing you are saying you had 4 guppies... 2 pairs of 2 different strains. Then the female of one group died and yet she still mated with a male outside her strain? (Like a blue female spawned with a red male).
So the problems with your assumption is that you think a female guppy actual picks a mate in her strain... like they pick a mate that looks like the same strain as themselves?
Because a female guppy may easily decide her own line of males are not as attractive another line's males. Guppies don't have the cultural and human notion of an US v. THEM due to color. They DO sometimes have a notion of which males to have fry with, because of inbreeding, though. That is to say, guppies prefer non-sibling or non -parent/child breeding, if given an option.
The other 2 important things to remember here are these:
-1.) Female guppies can't "say no" to male guppies, beyond trying to swim away and out maneuver the males which constantly try and mate with her.
2. Even if she mates with a male that she does not want to have babies with, it is likely she will retain his sperm for a time. Her "Choice" comes when she decides which male's sperm to use, out of the samples she keeps inside herself. This means that female guppies can save sperm beyond a single pregnancy. In scientific studies, they've documented female guppies having up to 7 batches of babies after only being with 1 male for 1 day! So a female guppy who has been with mature male guppies could in theory, have a batch of fry using the sperm from her very first set of fry.
She could be blue and mate with a blue male...then be in a tank with red males and no blue males and she may have 4 batches of fry that are all red and then have a 5th batch of fry that is blue! EVEN IF she hasn't been with another blue male for over a year. In studies they seem to be able to keep up to 5 different male's sperm...and she chooses from the sperm she stores internally, not which male to spawn with period.
*Last note- all this is sort of ironic, since many of the color traits are expressed on the Y chromosome

So yes, the females need to be the same for a true line... however many breeders only sell males, and so lots of keepers including myself, look for a female as close as possible with color ..then pattern, and use them to start back cross spawning the babies to the best dad you have with each new generation of females

Usually temperature or ph levels. Most fish will shift gender ratio based on those 2 parameters

it could be, but there are far too many variables to know without details on him, his tank, his history of spawning, the other fish in the tank and on and on

she can probably have 7 or 8 aka her lifetime in theory....more commonly its 2 or 3 with a single encounter.

most likely. while she could still produce more of the other babies if she deems his DNA inferior, they still tend to have babies with the most recent male they are fertalized by. i have a lot of "androgyns" or male who only developp a male look after a long time, and they are big, others are more colorsfull but little.
The giant pale ones are females, and the tiny colorful ones are males.
1) There is no way mathematically a fish that produces fry every month and dies every 36 months can sustain a colony in a closed system for 20 years with only 2 males and 2 females with no inbreeding.
Her storing sperm and producing multiple broods from 1 male further exacerbates the problem
Even without looking at the methodology (DNA/RNA testing vs fraternal expressed trait observation) long term systemic mathematic common sense says no way
2) the guppies we have are selectively bred through line and then colony breeding to get the patterns we see. Like 30 years of effort.
They do not exist in the wild. Colors are far more muted and a well fed male in a wild type is more colorful than beta male being starved out.
They still don’t have super crazy colors screaming “eat me” and stripes and dots are far more prevalent
3) it is far more likely that the OF marker is a subconscious system with her body dealing with the quality of sperm or a marker on the sperm itself than her remembering a male she mated with and then months later consciously deciding the 3rd male she mates with is better, then the 5th male thereafter is better because his color pattern (which once again won’t be as vivid or differentiated in a wild type) won’t get her fry eaten
The reason they breed so prolifically in the first place is because they ARE going to get eaten
4) A female guppy will gladly mate with her father or brother both in line and colony breeding. Depending on their genetics, with no ill effect. This is HOW we got the colors as bright and the patterns as wild as we have them now
There is no ethical/moral stigma in a fish colony and they do not avoid crossing based on F generation.

In most cases it’s a waste of time and effort. Either there is a trait/defect in the line which is exacerbated or there isn’t.

You do have good points, however just because fish crossing doesn't create visible defects, doesn't mean it's a good way to line breed. It's always better to inject diversity into the line, and "cousins" won't carry those issues usually. Ive noticed when i allow line breeding f1 to f2 that (maybe it's in my head ), but they end up with way more crooked spines and higher fry mortality... but they do look pretty usually.
Also i should say "reduced inbreeding" not eliminated or avoided ... theyll try and keep diversity or several steps of separation genetically according to that study

Im glad they liked the video and didnt feel like their time was wasted. Im a huge nerd at heart, but in school id rather do 0 homework and pretty much didn't even go to class, so the fact that you respect your teacher and learning enough to even watch a few seconds of this information- means you are ahead of where i was at your age.
Later in college i fell in love with learning and all things unknown or uncharted getting 3 different degrees. This video is just packed with information on genetics that change how we understand reproduction and evolution.
Imagine if human females could mate with 5 different guys and then decide years later - based on how healthy and attractive and successful their past partners were...and only have babies with the best one or two choices. It's really amazing that these little fish can do this- and also avoid inbreeding by sensing the poor match of genetic material....some humans still cant manage to do that. And you get cousins that are also siblings
Info that may change the way we view evolution and even things like how we currently use birth control pills- when perhaps there's a protein marker that we could allow humans to add to sperm cells, thus slowing them down and making them useless.
