- Let´s fly on the 5* Qatar Airways “World’s Best Airline” in the highest cabin of service: First Class!
One always has very high expectations at Qatar Airways, so imagining what it is like to fly them in the best possible cabin!
Well, terrible I’m sad to share. And a complete waste of cash/miles as it is almost the same product as Business Class with a few minor differences, that only being some meals or wines.
Everything else, from blankets to glassware, to chocolates and toiletries are all the same. At 3x more the price, or more!
Join me on this journey and see for yourself why one should never believe all the things Skytrax says. If you can’t do First Class right, you are directly not the world’s best airline. Period.
First Class stands for opulence, difference, luxury, being a step ahead and giving experiences beyond expectations, and the Qatar Airways A380 offers none of that in First.
We start this journey in the most wonderful way at the Al Sawfa First Lounge in Doha. This lounge is stunning and the staff are perfect, a stark contrast with what was to come.
This was the first time I ever wrote a complaint about a below average experience that I did not deserve having (as it is promoted to be the best) and the Qatar Airways customer service could not have cared less, they even gave me completely wrong answers. So, I leave the video here for you to judge for yourselves!
(To share an example of an answer: my soup was served lukewarm. But Qatar’s customer service claims it was hot.. How would they know? 🤨)
I do hope you enjoy and save yourselves the money and expectations for a First Class flight on QR and better spend it elsewhere, where giving you and experience of a lifetime is a guarantee.
But let’s put a positive spin on what we have!

I love the fact that you actually tell us each airplane's destination city. I've always wondered this when plane watching.
It’s a lot of extra work to find that out but worth it! I also always want to know where they’re going.

In the past, the "First Class" was actually a thing in Qatar Airways when they flew A380s regularly and there was a service difference between the business class and first class, then they retired them and had only Q-Suites, which served as both business class and first class. Then, the Qatar Airways and Airbus dispute started that resulted grounding of aircrafts and no deliveries, so Qatar Airways were forced to get the A380s back-up in the air again. Thankfully, the dispute being settled newer planes will be delivered as well as those grounded ones will be back in service again and they'll retire all these A380s. So the Q-Suite will eventually replace all these old "First Class" that are mainly available on the A380s. Anyways, I hope you'll enjoy your next trip to get your mood back up.
Thanks for the lovely explanatory comment. I am quite aware of the development inside of QR. The thing is that you really can’t sell this First Class at 3-4 times the price of Qsuites. I would then have flown Qsuites to BKK. But I chose First Class. It is really no excuse to offer almost the same service as in Business Class.I wish it were written somewhere.
Just like calling Business Class in the Gulf “First Class”. I recently experienced “First Class” of the ex-Al Maha A320.. No words really.
My next trips on QR since then have been an up and down, there is no real consistency. Many comments here say the same. It seems like many people are overworked and stressed, it’s just a vibe you sense.
I did an empty flight from SFO to DOH and people were just running around like headless chickens for no reason.
But then I also had a flight to Lahore where I had a crew that was so good he should be working on space ships.
I hope the former glory returns as currently there is something not right..

On the hard product I agree with your assessment. The seats are simply not on par with its competitors. Same goes for the food. There is no material difference with Qsuite and frankly I like the privacy on qsuite much better. On the soft product I think were unlucky. I have flown two times QR first class and the service was excellent (DOHA_BKK red eye). Either way, thank you for the excellent review. You got a new follower.
I like drinking, the first class has better drinks so i would choose to do this on points

Many of you encouraged me to write QR about my experience. I did.
And QR’s reply was as mediocre as the flight. I gave them some constructive feedback which was just met with 50% excuses and 50% explanations.
According to QR: “My soup was served hot”, “My IFE was working as the crew saw me watching TV”, “And I should have mentioned shortfalls”.
I’m sorry, but I was already asking for A LOT and mechanical shortfalls should be checked and fixed prior to passenger boarding and not be experienced inflight in First Class. Period.

I've flown that product a few times and agree with your review entirely.
Back in 2015 there was a real differentiation between F&J classes, but now that QR effectively want to get rid of F, it's like they don't care.
My advice if flying QR is to book a q suite seat and pay for access to Al Safwa, which is worth every penny!

Another masterpiece my friend👏, I really felt for you as when I saw it I got excited, Qatar Airways FIRST class service all the way through. A great shame that the same level of service didn’t continue onto the aircraft. I do hope they refit or improve such qualities, people pay a lot of money and they expect high level of service throughout. No surprise on the Cabin Crew as there usually priceless shame about the rest of the experience. Always a good way of taking it, laugh and carry on! Great work 👏👏

The lounge was indeed a complete different experience vs on board. But even the lounge was terrible a couple of months ago as it was packed with new employees but that’s all much better now.
I believe they’ll get rid of the First Class all together but until then I also hope they improve this product as something has to change to differentiate it from Business Class..

I got the same flight back in March in the other direction, sitting in the seat behind yours. Unfortunately the departure time from Bangkok was 01.50 so I didn’t really experience the first class service at all. I had a few glasses of champagne before takeoff, next thing I remember was one of the delightful cabin crew asking me if I would like my bed made up . I slept all the way through until about 15 minutes before landing in Doha . I had grand plans for the flight , eat my caviar and salmon , have drinks in the bar with a fellow Brit I met at check in , have a good breakfast etc etc , sadly I missed it all. I deliberately only had one gin and tonic in the lounge while waiting for boarding so as not to be too tired 🥱, but alas, I can’t do late night these days . Qatar is a splendid airline and I will try to do a first class sector on a day time flight before they do away with first class completely. 👍 All the best . AB

Well, Singapore Airlines also has their ups and downs in the Economy Class.. But yes, Suites, First and Business are top.
After flying weekly I really think that worlds best is just whatever suits your needs on the day. For me it depends how I feel, who I travel with, where I’m going..
But yes, SQ in the top 5 for sure!

If I remember, QR had actually a full F class service prior to Covid-19. Now I think this is just a temporary 1st class, but still no excuse for "the world's best airline" to have a business+ service.
I like that name, Business +.. But it wasn’t even that.
And it’s not only that it is a temporary First Class, they also try to sell people Business Class as First Class on intra GCC routes. I arrived from the UAE on a terrible recliner seat A320 without IFE and it was called First.
This is just making fun of people. When you fly Kuwait Airways or Emirates in First it is a Suite guaranteed!

@@TheLayoverAviation maybe the middle eastern first class is to use the 1st class lounge, since the business class lounge is already full as ever. But for long haul 1st class they should just mark it as Business+ similar to Malaysian Airlines.

Great video, shame about the inflight service. Recently flew BA First, combo of miles and £s, and the ground staff were impeccable, the flight crew were just plain rude on both flights. Going on Emirates First next month (A380 for the first time), I do hope it's good as I actually paid serious cash for it - once in a lifetime holiday - so splashed the cash as we say. Keep up the great work, I chuckle at your commentary a lot. 🙃

I don’t mind if the do present it this way. But don’t claim you’re the best if you can’t do it good. The promises are so many when you fly them..
Every other airline has a unique and incredible First Class product except for QR.

I believe I flew this same plane just the reverse route "BKK-Doha" and it was a night flight, blah I was in Business class, during a huge lightning storm...I hope next time it's a day flight ;) Weird how they just ushered you into the FC cabin with no "Hi Mr. Alex How are you" I think the flight crews are overworked as the flights are mostly all packed now ;( I'll have to agree that the food quality has been sliding a bit since the first time I flew them. But it's still good! I'm really impressed about the room/Jacuzzi bath in the First class lounge area.. I wandered up there once but of course couldn't enter ;) someday! If you get a chance Try ANA the room or their FC product. Their hospitality is superb!! Thanks again for the awesome video and taking us along with you!

The reason its outdated because its only a temporary solution to the a350’s problem so they have no desire to upgrade them and the ceo isnt a fan of over the top first class products. Finally qa received they’re first airbus delivery in over 2 years to retire they’re old fleet soon. Also you probably knew all this so why didn’t you avoid it unless its just to review how it holds up

Your shout-out to your son was great and reminded me of a fun story. We don’t have planes flying over my area often at all. But when we do, I check out their flight path on a famous app. Also, at work during supervision 😂🙈 and will share it with my students. Last week, a plane flies overhead and one of the kids shouted: Mrs. Thomas where is that plane going??! 🤣✈️ he beat me to it!

My flight from Melbourne to Qatar and Qatar Viana was fantastic. One of best flights and the service was fantastic. Food was excellent. Cabin crew was very friendly and Great service..
Yes, it is good, but not consistently. I have both great and mediocre flights with them. It really depends on the day. Very glad you had a good experience!

I agree the in-flight standard was not up to scratch...BUT PLEASE....use a different transition other than used in this video with the occasional jarring noise.
It was a just one time thing in this video with this “futuristic buzzing” like showing what I missed from Emirates. It won’t be done again!

Totally useless First class. As i fly Qatar all the time i havent upgraded to First just because the business is so good. Little bit the same problem JAL has with their premium economy. The economy is just too good for you to pay x2 for premium. Think same here with QR first class. Great video and fun to see for me that flies this route every month.

Had also my problems with QA, but more with the ground crew. However, my wife and I will fly from Amsterdam to Doha in October, Business class. I'll hope we will have a better experience since flight crew was always very attentive and nice (eco and business class).

Hey there! I’ve had issues on ground but mostly because there are a lot of new staff and they’re lost. That I understand. But to pay top notch and get the worst First I’ve experienced makes me angry.

Thank you for your review. I flew Qsuites from Mel to Doha to LAX and then Qsuites return in June this year and from what I just watched I think Qsuites are definitely the way to go. As I fly solo, I love the Qsuite and the privacy that comes with it.

Yeah, the ANA liveries are terrific. Pity they only fly Hawaii. How about Tokyo - London, or even better Tokyo to Teesside! (Look it up)
@@amazer747 i believe the only reason they still have a380s is because of how high demand their hawaii flights are, and im guessing their 787s/777s are sufficient for the other routes
Great video as always! I love the meticulous approach you take, from fine details of observing the EK29 takeoff to London, to the start to end experience of your trip report. It makes it all the more fun and engaging for the viewer. Do&Co who I believe do the in-flight catering (correct me if I'm wrong) are very rated, but it seems that even on BA, the airline has made the switch from beef to lamb in several classes which seems like cost cutting post pandemic. Nevertheless, safe trip in Bangkok!

Their A380 was stored in Tarbes , yep they are bringing them one by one after a two year gap, hope they will fix all the anomalies. All in all rest of the trip exceptional! Nice Alex.
So on my next flight I’ll be on an A380 that is performing the first trip after storage and it was all fine.
The problem on my flight is that nobody really did their job properly prior to passenger boarding.
A friend of mine told me that they check most functions on the First Class seat to ensure they are working.

Qatar airways business class is their strong point. They have simply made it so good that first class seems useless.
Business Class is a good Business Class. At QR it is not First.
If you fly First at SQ, EK or others you’ll know why it’s not the same.
I think they should just get rid of it.

Alex another epic report and no surprises for me to be very honest! I had to chuckle regularly but in all honesty for the price you pay which is a fortune it is outrageous!! Not escorted to your seat, no bubble top ups, beef like rubber and your private chauffeur??!! And IFE?? Interesting reply from QR but not enough to justify anything!! I love it when I fly into Amsterdam on EK and my private chauffeur is waiting for me to drive me 50ks north!! No fuzz for family to meet me!
I love Doha airport and visited business lounge a couple of times; the quietness is deafening haha! I flew QR a couple of times on its old and dated 777-200LR from AKL to DOH non stop in 2-2-2 business config. On demand dining was good (17 hrs non stop!) but didn't see you mention on it in your report!! And then the impossible time schedules! Every flight into AKL arrives at 3.00am!! Where do you go?? It is quite outrageous indeed, but as I was so frustrated I thought to flip it and just have a little fun instead.
My whole point of this video is that it just can’t be world’s best. One can’t make that statement if you you’re unable to offer also the best First Class or plainly beat others in every field.
Like you mentioned, no chauffeur service in Business or First. It’s so useful.
There kind of was on demand dining on this flight but I ate lunch when the crew prepared it for me without me expecting it yet. I said “later” and suddenly my table was being prepared.
I don’t want to sound like an EK fanboy, but so far they are consistent for me while QR is the far opposite of that. You never know what surprise to expect. And sadly this time it wasn’t nice.
I’ll try to take the flight to AKL soon, I found a good offer but now I just need the time.
Pro hacker tip: I know you got to South Africa a lot, the ticket will be so much cheaper if you book from SA to NZ and not vice versa.
I found JNB - DXB - AKL with Emirates for 3,500$ one way, in First.

While the aiport offers extreme luxury experience for is class passengers at qatar airways, but after you reviewed the firs class seat, i would preferably say that emirates first class is better than Qatar, in my opinion, as qatars first class seat lacks privacy, and many other small aspects which doesnt really gives the first class feels.
From a passengers point if view this is an excellent review. For Qatar Airways this is highlighting a disgraceful service, I do hope you sent this video to the head of Qatar Airways with a view to helping the mechanics rectify the issues and also address the required training of the aircrew. 🎉🎉

Hey Alex, thanks for a very honest trip report. It would be great to let QR know about your experience. Knowing Akbar Al Baker highest standards I am sure they would work on these faults (both in hard and soft products) and compensate you for your experience somehow. Best airlines and hotels always react in a proper way to faults
Hey Andrew. I did mail them and their response was as mediocre as the flight.
It made me very sad to be a loyal QR customer if one is not heard.
I am not even chasing a compensation, I just wanted them to acknowledge this happens and take some correctional feedback.
I was instead just replied excuses and explanations that angered me more.

Business class service on Qatar can be a hit or miss. Flying business class from DOH to IAD I had to ask 3 times for a tea. Finally I complained to the purser. I know the FAs can be written up but asking for something 3 times is a bit much. Sad to see the same thing happening in First class.
Jack, I fly with them every month and you’re right. There is no in between, just bad or great. But that’s also what happens when you claim to be world’s best; people come with high expectation.
A tea is something very basic though. Sad that happened.
And yes, some might get a call from a manager for telling the purser, but what to do. You pay a lot.

Can you please answer few clarifications if you don't mind. How do you know that the flight goes to XYZ location? And the age of aircraft? Even I observed in couple of your videos, a flight beside you in the air will be flying and you say its destination. I am very curious to know about this. This information will help other aviation beginners to bump up their UA-cam views and as well as your subscribers will gain the knowledge shared.

I've flown this exact first class and I have no idea why you would want a touch screen IFE? The screen is so damn far away you'd have to jump at it to touch it.
Great review. I respectfully disagree that it's too close to business. I've seen several "bloggers" on this DOH-BKK route criticize F. I don't think QR really shines for such a 'short' (7 hr) flight. I flew DOH-SYD (15 hr) in March in F and it was spectacular - attentive service, delicious food, and one of the best wine lists in the sky (yes, including EK F). Not everything is about price!. That said, your Riesling at 27:05 is $US250 - I've never seen that price point in Business (and than LP Alexandra for bubbly). My return flight SYD-DOH was similarly outstanding; the food showcased local Australian ingredients and was very well presented. I don't mind the (lack of) privacy on QR; I like to see the cabin and enjoy the ride - not shut it out; but that's just me!
I love the seat, the amenities, the bar, and the beautifully appointed bathroom. I'm not a QR apologist, but I think you were too critical and need to give QR F a go on a longer route ;) Everyone has opinions and yours is very valid! Have a great day.

All those two are way better vs this.. I specially enjoy EK First Class, but it comes at a price. So Qsuites is a more affordable alternative..

The BAR on this A380 looked beautiful, But honestly it is slightly small, Also the seating arrangement is not good for socializing, The fact that you celebrated a birthday on EKs A380 !! Good Job as always, The video didn't seem biased to me because i can understand the value of your hard earned money. And yeah i think Qatari officials have paid a huge amount to appear the "best" (Because they cant just compare themselves to their Emirati counterparts)

I’ve heard that QF a380 “first” is actually more of a business plus, give that there is no first on most of the fleet. You’ve sure confirmed that.although the wines do look great….
They should have warned me somewhere of that so I would have flown EK or SQ First instead. And yes the wines were great but it was not free flowing like in most other video’s as the crew was nowhere to be seen unless I called for them.

Maybe the year or so long A380 storage got to this plane with so much broken tech - should not have happened, but it is what it is. But agreed on there having been a major step up story for First Class over Business Class.
That is no excuse at all. And I’ll show you next video. I’ll be flying one of Emirates’ oldest A380’s which came out of storage the day before. And nothing went wrong, quite the contrary.

Great review video as always. I guess Emirates and Singapore Air are the first class to fly on for the A380. Maybe ANA first class on their A380 to Hawaii is good too. To bad that’s not a very long flight.
They absolutely are. They invest heavily in their First Class and are proud of it.

Just flew Syd Doha in First class, paid for the upgrade and wish I had watched your review before hand…you are soooon spot on..mine was an exact replica of your with added bonus of wifi not working and rude checkin staff ( no welcome at all) crew were OK, but even they were apologetic for the state of the A380 first class..they must get a lot of bad feedback..I am sorry I must have come across as a snotty brat ( entitled)..but really if no excuse for such bad offering..I am in process of writing to them and provide feedback but am sure will be met with same lame excuses. Thanks for the review and great video…like you I will be steering clear of QR in the future.
One question (I saw this in all first-class Vloggers' videos), how can you eat and drink so many foods and drinks (cold, hot, alcoholic, non-alcoholic) in a short amount of time even on those 12-hour flights together? Sorry to ask this but if I eat just several summer fruits together, my stomach will hurt several hours later. Sorry to ask, but I'm trying to understand how possible to drink coffee, juice, cocktail, wine, and champagne together without having any problem with the stomach or the digestion system?
you have to plan your pooping and also ensure youre in reasonable shape (exercise and diet wise) so save up the mixing of foods for that 10-14 flight and airport period.

So after tomorrow I’m going with my son and mother to my favorite restaurant in Amsterdam. I am looking forward to all I want to eat. The same happens on planes. I just love the dining experience ever since I was a kid. So it’s a special place for me where I suddenly have unlimited appetite. And I also want to show you all as much as I can.
I exercise a lot though. I either run 10km or bike 30km a day.
The drinks I have no issue with. I actually perform much better after some drinks. I’m actually now enjoying a third glass of Champagne at home while answering comments.
As long as it does not impact your health or those around you there is no real problem. My body handles and likes it. It depends on the person though.
I can’t talk for other video makers but this is my simple answer. When you’re passionate about something like I am for food, planes and drinks, there are no limits!

Hey Alex, great report and you're right, it's really not worth the money (jij bent geloof ook een Nederlander dus sowieso 😉).
I flew between Doha and my then home Perth WA Qatar First Class several times and always used my FFP.
All those times the service was much better than you have experienced now. The food is indeed the same as in Business Class with some additions. But was still very good.
Qatar Airways' response to your complaints is ridiculous.

Even if you spend well earned FFP’s it is a horrid waste of them in my opinion. I fly a lot with them in Business Class so I can recognize each single thing that comes from that cabin. It made me quite upset as I’m used to Emirates First where it is all different, except for some nut plates and liquor glass..

Flew to manchester with the emirates 380,on the road back with the qr a350 1000 , both economy, but i preferred the qr flight by far
Everyone has got their own likes and dislikes.. I will shortly release a comparative between the EK A380 and QR A35K. I will have to choose EK, first of all much wider seats, better entertainment and bigger meal choices. What I like about QR is that I earn tons of miles 😊
Nice video. The ground service seemed very 5 ⭐️. The FC seemed off? Honestly, I think they just offered FC to say, they have FC? TBH, FC lines have been blurred by their 1st class business?
Either get rid of it, or go the route of AF?
The ground experience was great indeed. Business Class is great but not really a First Class. Try SQ or EK and others in First and you’ll see how First still is an entirely different experience, not only a closing door.
They should stop offering it if they’re excuse is “our business is too good”. It is not that great. And people pay 3 times or more for First..
So yes, get rid of it!

This was my first First class flight, even the same seat, the experience of the first class lounge was the best one so far, I paid only 40 usd and 50k AAdvantage miles for the flight

@@TheLayoverAviation Actually my experience was not bad at all, my credit cards are also from USA so is pretty easy to earn miles, Im a Nomad and Im living in hotels so I use AA portal instead of Booking and you could earn way more miles than when you are flying

Yes, spend it on Business Class instead. It’s far better, most seats have closable doors. This First Class just feels like a cash-grab and run.

What a refreshing and totally as it was descriptive QR F Class experience. The first class crew must have been training in the J class cabin. As for the entertainment experience well !!! Wonder if the ostentatious CEO had a look at his F Class Product mishap 😂😂
The thing is that I also fly often in Business Class and find the service even more attentive there. I think the crew was maybe not used to this plane, I really don’t know..
I don’t think the CEO has time to watch, but the complaint has been send there and they couldn’t have cared less.
It’s typical of them. If they fall on their faces they have themselves to blame

I have a friend who is a very frequent flier with SQ. And when he had a horrible experience in SQ Suites and wrote about it the country boss flew to his city, invited him for dinner, gifted him his favorite Champagne and listened to what they could improve. That’s customer service!!

I have a question, Qatar is only operating its A380 to 4 cities and no other planes have first class. Is it economical for them to run a lounge for only 5-6 daily flights and 40-48 passengers? Can't they just send their First Class passengers to the Al Mourjan Lounge and use the remaining money to invest in their onboard product? Looking forward to the next video.
So QR also operate First Class on flights around the Middle East. Business Class is sold as First Class and it has those perks too. So each time I fly from Dubai to Doha Business Class is not sold, only First Class.

Yes, I presented the treats after boarding. The crew was nice, but just not running the show like in an exquisite ambiance.
The seat functions and such not working just has no excuse. It shows no attention to detail or care at all. Sad.

Qatar is not investing in first class cabin, actually they try to get rid of it as these is the latest trend in industry. They banking on Qusite which is the best in bussines so far. They only have first class on A380 fleet, so basically only 4 destinations where u can fly in first class, forethere so there is lack of interest to improve it. Also QR cabin crew fly more then 7 diffrent fleet (A320, A330, A350, A380, B777, B787, B737) which is crazy, so its not so usual to work in first class for them and thats why these finese is missing.

I wouldn’t say BKK is very high yield.. it’s one of the cheapest destinations to fly to.
It’s easy to fill airplanes but not with high fares.
And QR confirmed the A380’s will be gone in the next few years. I wish they stay a bit longer!
It has the best business class, best first class would have to go to Emirates in my opinion especially the game changer!

Great Trip Report as always! Qatar can't compare to Singapore, Swiss, Emirates, Air France or ANA when it comes to first class.. People have to start opening their eyes to the fictitious measurements from Scamtrax, who always rank Qatar high.... Money Talks.....

It is very obvious for me that someone is paying to be top airline. There is NO WAY QR Economy Class is better then Etihad or Emirates to call a few.. (and I spend $1000’s a year on QR). Only Business Class (IF you get Qsuites) is great. Anyway, I always love this chat. They’ll likely be worlds best next year too!

Qatar is known for the best business class,not first class and to be more precise is the Q-Suite. It is not a scammed report.
