This is Styx and their best. I still remember putting this on my turntable and listening to when it first came out. What a thrill the unfolding of this song was. As good as this live version is, if you like the song, you'd really like the studio version. Oh, and BJ--that swinging, rotating arm motion on the guitar is what Pete Townsend of The Who was famous for, and with him it was generally referred to as 'the windmill.'
Styx "Lady" from 1974 is their breakout single. It was all over the radio and I can still remember everything about the song because I was only 4 years old. It's one of those first songs you can remember so far back...and that's pretty cool!! Thank you for sharing Styx with us, they are a great, respected rock band from the USA.
This is actually from the movie Styx- Caught in the Act. It's the story of Charles Kilroy(Dennis DeYoung) and Jonathan Chance(Tommy Shaw). The rest of the band also played dual characters- James Young, John & Chuck Panozzo
This band is my favorite live concert. They are always running and moving across the stage entertaining band❤❤❤ I've seen them several times, because they are so much fun....
Renegade has been my top favorite from this band since I first heard it in the 6th grade (waaaay back in 1978). Another one that Tommy Shaw sings on is "Too Much Time On My Hands" (my 2nd favorite song from Styx). I've always preferred his voice over Dennis DeYoung's... A few other favorites are - Don't Let It End, Show Me The Way, Babe, Best of Times, & Lady. I saw them in concert once & they end every show with this song. The place was dead quiet during the Acapella part, but as soon as the beat dropped, the entire stadium full of people were on their feet & dancing, singing along, clapping, & stomping their feet during the chanting to the heavy drum beats. It was so loud that you could barely hear the band - LOL!
The studio version of this song reminds me of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, this live version sounds more like Southern Rock. "Snowblind" is my absolute favorite. 💗💗💗
One of my favorites from Styx. I think I wore out the groove on the album "Pieces of Eight". I like seeing you all rocking out to the songs from my youth. The lead singer this time is Tommy Shaw, Denis DeYoung sang on "Come Sail Away". The "Paradise" that was sung at the end referenced "Paradise Theater" another great album by Styx, pick any song from that album.
To answer BJ's question. That is the whammy bar that is on the guitar that he is using. It bends the note with vibrato or tremolo as you are playing. Wawa pedal is an actual pedal setup you use your feet with and alters the tone and frequency of the notes it is used on.
" Blue Collar Man" one of my favorites by them . Off group but this song always reminds me of the band Bad Company from their debut album Bad Company the song.... Bad Company LoL ✌️♥️
Led Zeppelin signed Bad Co to Swan song as a result of the great Peter Grant. Grant and Zeppelin changed almost everything regarding live shows, gate percentage and record control. Not to mention no opening act, instead Zeppelin would blow out 2.5 hours straight no more 20-30 min headliners like the Beatles.
You can thank the show Supernatural for reintroducing this amazing song and band to the current generation of people and music lovers. Personally my favorite Styx song of all time.
Tommy Shaw is one of the best singers ever. He was also in a band called Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent and Jack Blades from Night Ranger. Check them out.
Now you can go and check out the super group “ . Damn Yankees “ !!! The singer from this band is the singers for them Tommy Shaw Ted Nugent Jack Blades from Night Ranger !!!!
The singer, Tommy Shaw, was also in another group called Damn Yankees. It was a supergroup that also included Ted Nugent. Check out their song "High Enough". It is amazing! :)
This was from the live album Caught in the act. They are the only band to have 4 back to back platinum albums in a row. Not even the Beatles could match that feat.
The lead guitarist isn’t using a pedal. He’s using the “whammy bar”, a metal lever attached to the guitar that allow the strings to bend all at once when you push down on it. The bar moves freely but when you press down, toward the guitar, the strings bend. This is what he is doing at 4:57. You can get a good close up view of the whammy bar being used in Jimi Hendrix’s version of the National Anthem live at Woodstock, and Stevie Ray Vaughn playing Jimi’s Voodoo Child live.
Styx was huge in 1970's... one of my favorite bands during high school years 😎🎸 If only they hadn't committed that crime against music MR ROBOTO in '83 😝🤬🤣🤣
This is from the live album caught in the act. As someone already said this is the only band that had 4 back to back platinum albums. Not even the Beatles could match that. Amazing band. When they toured in 1996 I had the opportunity to meet them when they played the Beacon Theater in NYC. Great bunch of guys
This was from "Caught In The Act." It was a rock opera type show built around the album "Kilroy Was Here." It is an awesome concert. The liner notes on the album has the whole story on it. I won't tell you how long I've been a Styx fan.
Amazing in concert and a plethora of great songs to choose from their many albums. Just stay away from Mr. Roboto for a while. Tommy Shaw the lead singer in this song is still very active with the youth and teaching and playing gigs with them. Have fun on this trip!!
This was the Kilroy tour. It was a concept album with a tour more like a stage show. To get the whole effect you need to watch the whole concert. This was the first time I saw Styx.
I know I've suggested this before; thanks! Styx has too many greats to name, but I'll also suggest Grand Illusion, and for that matter the entire Grand Illusion album. Great reaction; love you guys! -Joni
Thanks for the reaction! Just wanted to say thank you for all the enjoyment watching you two this year and I wanted to wish both of you and your families a very Merry Christmas!
Listen, I’m 53 years old. I was born January 1970 and I grew up listening to Styx because my mother loved his band.! I feel like Styx is very underrated. This is such an amazing band, and such an amazing representation of music during my time growing up! I feel bad for people nowadays, who didn’t grow up during my time and listening to the best music ever
Hard to believe this was the tour that broke the band up. Styx was SOOO damn great. Saw the Kilroy Tour 3 times including what was described as the concert that broke them up The Texxas Jam @ the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. No matter what was said that concert ( Texxas Jam ) was GREAT. Styx was on fire!! Thank you so much for playing this.
BJ he is just playing a standard guitar. He was using a series of hammer ons and pull offs with his left hand and a whammy bar with his right hand. The whammy bar takes some tension off the strings giving the guitar that whoa sound. All standard rock and roll guitar stuff.
These are some of the most down to earth, humble guys on the planet. And when they get on stage they give the audience every penny's worth. The only pedal guitar would be a pedal steel guitar, but it's not like most other guitars. All guitar players however, have a large array of electronic pedals or switches at their feet that do everything from adding reverb or echo to compression and stereo separation.
They were SO GOOD, live. Saw them on the Grand Illusion tour. NO pedal. Watch JY's right hand slide down to use what they call a whammy bar. Tommy Shaw is the singer and the other guitarist. He wrote this song.
IMO, this is Styx's best point A to B simple hard rock song, but they had many great songs, both soft, hard, and a mix of the two. To hear them do all their hits live, the 1984 "Caught In The Act" double album (recorded at Saenger Theater, New Orleans in April, 1983) is my recommendation, and from it, the song "Suite Madame Blue." In discord, we were speaking about the troubles America had in the 1970's, and Styx speaks about the nation metaphorically, as it was written in 1975. As a singer, I think you'll appreciate it. It starts soft, has a transitional synthesizer solo, before crescendo-ing with big rock guitar chords and a piercing solo. It's almost theatrical, but Styx was like that, as you noticed in the stage performance on this video.
I saw them the year before they broke up. Well Dennis left. Guy on the keys. I loved every minute of that show!! Absolutely one of the best concerts I have ever seen!!
Hi Asia and BJ, When I was 18 years old I was in the third band that backed up STYX at a show in Wisconsin before they really broke big but there were still 5000 people or more, it gave me goose pimples when we played the BOSTON song "More Than A Feeling", released that same year in 1976
That was not the normal song (the ending), it is from the "Kilroy Was Here tour. It was a concept album and a play. Stix still plays this song in their live shows, it just does not have the theatrics "add on" ending.
This video was from the Kilroy was Here tour which had a theatrical aspect in addition to the rock. I saw Styx on this tour (I was in high school). It was a fantastic show but also lead to the band breaking up for a while due to creative differences (Dennis, the keyboardist wanted the theatrics, while Tommy and JY, the two guitarists, wanted more rock). I loved it all, and still do. Thanks for the reaction!
That was the year that Styx got a little weird with their stage show during the Kilroy tour 1983. They wanted to create more of a Rock Opera with this show. Still great music. Looking forward to more Styx. Thanks and God Bless.
It looks like this version is from around 1983, during the "Kilroy Was Here" tour. The album and tour was designed as a reply to evangelical churches after the churches had public "Styx album burnings" because the churches claimed that the previous album "Paradise Theatre" was somehow about devil worship. I remember the time very well because as a Styx fan I was in attendance at one of their first Paradise Theatre shows. My first concert. It was a crazy time to be a Styx fan. I can only imagine how crazy it must have seemed to the members of the band.
Lol... maybe that's why I never got past the local tristate bar and club gigs, I forgot the Rockstar moves, lol. Especially that crazy dance. But yeah... Tommy Shaw is a beast, showed up a beast. The band said " High school??!!?...you're goin' on tour with us, kid !"
Tommy Shaw from Styx was also part of the super group Damn Yankees with Jack Blade from Night Ranger and Ted Nugent. I would check out Night Ranger and Damn Yankees.
Hey guys....Styx is presently on tour! They sound amazing still. Catch them if you can. They are perhaps the last of the 70's bands still out there and still sounding great!
Yes, they are definitely entertainer's on the stage(I seen them back in the 90's, with my now ex-fiancée). And, the guy who sing's this, is not the normal lead singer. BUT, he is also in another band(Similar to Bad Company, with the "supergroup" idea, of the 80's rocker's, who got together, just as Bad Company did), which is a "supergroup" band, where in both Bad Company & Damn Yankees, there are a collage of top band member's, where Damn Yankees, has Tommy Shaw(The singer of this song and normally guitarist for the band Styx, but tend's to sing most of Damn Yankees song's), Ted Nugent(Well? Isn't the name obvious enough!? LOL), Jack Blades(Night Ranger/Journey guitarist), Michael Cartellone(Variety of artist's he played with, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Peter Frampton, Accept(Which, y'all should check out their song "Balls To The Wall), as well as other's) and a few fill-in's from time-to-time. Now, similar to Bad Company, Damn Yankees, also had different guy's in the group, singing different song's, as to not hog all of the glory. They were all famous, before they were even in the band to begin with. So, they already had a taste of the big life, before jumpin into this project, with Damn Yankees. Now, the band Bad Company derived of Simone Kirke(Free), Paul Rodgers(Pink Floyd), Howard Leese(Heart) & Todd Ronning(Not sure which band's he was in, sorry), for their roster. And, the Bad Company was those from the 70's, while Damn Yankees, were those from the 80's...
Sprained my finger jumping over to this!!! 🔥🔥🤘🥰💜🎄
💯
I sprained my damn face getting to this!! 🤣😛
😆🧚🏿
👋😄
Thanks’ Lord for Styx🧜🏻♀️💫
Styx goes OFF on this rendition of Renegade!! Fantastic! Guitars are off the chain, the energy is crazy! Stage presence is awesome! Good times!
Tommy Shaw from Styx goes on Live from Daryls house and does
BLUE COLLAR MAN its very fun and you get to see how incredible Tommy Shaw is.
Yes . Everyone seems to forget that was the first hit
Bingo... I was 4 as well when it came out also
And to think Tommy Shaw(singing lead vocals on this one) was self taught and from what I remember couldn't read music....He is AMAZING!!
This is actually from the movie Styx- Caught in the Act. It's the story of Charles Kilroy(Dennis DeYoung) and Jonathan Chance(Tommy Shaw). The rest of the band also played dual characters- James Young, John & Chuck Panozzo

The video was filmed in 1983 But your right The 70s were FANTASTIC, In 1978 RENEAGATE Came out
The studio version of this song reminds me of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, this live version sounds more like Southern Rock.
"Snowblind" is my absolute favorite. 💗💗💗
Yes I would recommend snowblind as well
One of my favorites from Styx. I think I wore out the groove on the album "Pieces of Eight". I like seeing you all rocking out to the songs from my youth.

The epitome of a rock star song is JOE WALSH: "Life's been good."
“You’re fooling yourself (angry young man “ is a favorite song.. very inspirational.. I got to see STYX in L.A Forum 1980
The song came out in 1978 The video was filmed in 1980 ,, It was a blast being a 70s Brat lol
" Blue Collar Man" one of my favorites by them . Off group but this song always reminds me of the band Bad Company from their debut album Bad Company the song.... Bad Company LoL ✌️♥️

Awesome live performance of this...I've only known the studio version, which is even better. Styx was dope.
Oh how I love my 70's rock bands. Nothing else like it. Tommy Shaw was the lead on this song.
OH HELL YEAH!! My favorite Styx song!🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Everybody who reviews this song for the first time love it. And it does have a nice cheery story behind it, lol.
Love this song!!! It has always been my favorite Styx song!
Studio version is smooth. Paradise Theater was HUUUUGE when it came out. Great album
Yes! Come Again!
Oh how I love Damn Yankees!!
My Steelers hype song! Absolute banger and an amazing live version.
Now you can go and check out the super group “ . Damn Yankees “ !!! The singer from this band is the singers for them Tommy Shaw Ted Nugent Jack Blades from Night Ranger !!!!
They are still performing and sound as good as ever. Renegade is usually their encore song.
Killer live performance 👏
I grew up w Styx in the 70s. They haven’t crossed my mind since then … wow. Also, listen to the studio version. It’s better.
I think people should listen to the studio version of most classic rock songs if it's their first time hearing it, just my opinion.
They haven't crossed you're mind sincep? Jesus I've been listening to them ever since for 47 years! So so many good songs!
STYX BABY!!!! 🔥🔥❤️🔥🔥
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yep, rockers. This is how it was!! ❤👍🏽
The singer, Tommy Shaw, was also in another group called Damn Yankees. It was a supergroup that also included Ted Nugent. Check out their song "High Enough". It is amazing! :)
I agree, High Enough is a must listen to.
Wow, haven't thought about this song in ages. Thanks guys.
Really liked this reaction.

Yes!!! You guys nailed it, STYX was all about their live show, performance, energy, fun, and most importantly excellent skills. MORE STYX!!!!
Styx was huge in 1970's... one of my favorite bands during high school years 😎🎸
If only they hadn't committed that crime against music MR ROBOTO in '83 😝🤬🤣🤣
You should check out Tommy Shaws other band Damn yankees - come again video it's a banger .
My First Concert Was Styx Paradise Theater Tour Seattle 7-11-1981. BJ That's The Whammy Bar Effect On The Guitar.
Saw them in 1978 in Pgh. Awesome!!!!!
This is from the live album caught in the act. As someone already said this is the only band that had 4 back to back platinum albums. Not even the Beatles could match that. Amazing band. Saw them many times in concert, I've seen many concerts, Styx is right at the top.
This was taken from the Kilroy Was Here Tour....a comment on music censorship at the time. The full concert film is pretty awesome.
Styx is amazing! Great performers 💜
Amazing in concert and a plethora of great songs to choose from their many albums. Just stay away from Mr. Roboto for a while. Tommy Shaw the lead singer in this song is still very active with the youth and teaching and playing gigs with them. Have fun on this trip!!

Whoo whee! Yessss! 🔥 🔥🔥 Now switch it up and do their song “Lady” please!!! Loved this live! I would suggest Lady studio version- please- 💖💙👍✌️
Merry Christmas Kimberlini! 🎄 It's been a fun year together in the comments. 🎵 I appreciate you my YT friend! Hope you have a beautiful holiday! 🎅❤🙏🏻
@@jennhurl Jennifer!! Hey! Merry Christmas to you too! Yes, I always enjoy seeing your name and comments- you’re an absolute sweetheart! ❤️🤍💚💝🌲
I know I've suggested this before; thanks! Styx has too many greats to name, but I'll also suggest Grand Illusion, and for that matter the entire Grand Illusion album. Great reaction; love you guys! -Joni
Damn Yankees , the band with Tommy Shaw from Styx, Jack Blades from Night Ranger and Ted Nugent, do an amazing version of the song
Thanks for the reaction! Just wanted to say thank you for all the enjoyment watching you two this year and I wanted to wish both of you and your families a very Merry Christmas!
Styx was the first concert I went to at the Phila. Spectrum, long gone. I was too young to appreciate it, my older sister and boyfriend took me.
Yes, Styx is and was very entertaining, seen them many times, always entertained!
That drummer KILT IT!!!!!
When this song was new. And i was in 4th or 5th grade. This was my favorite song.
I've seen them seven times they're awesome
Hard to believe this was the tour that broke the band up. Styx was SOOO damn great. Saw the Kilroy Tour 3 times including what was described as the concert that broke them up The Texxas Jam @ the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. No matter what was said that concert ( Texxas Jam ) was GREAT. Styx was on fire!! Thank you so much for playing this.
Saw them twice, and they rocked the house down with this one!
I always thought Tommy Shaw played the guitar solo in this song. Oh well it's kind of like Brad Whitford in Aerosmith playing some lead guitar solos.
BJ he is just playing a standard guitar. He was using a series of hammer ons and pull offs with his left hand and a whammy bar with his right hand. The whammy bar takes some tension off the strings giving the guitar that whoa sound. All standard rock and roll guitar stuff.
Their live shows will have you rocking.
One of my favorite bands!!!
This is one that definitely needs to be the studio version to get the full impact first time. 🤷🏻♀️
They were SO GOOD, live. Saw them on the Grand Illusion tour.
NO pedal. Watch JY's right hand slide down to use what they call a whammy bar. Tommy Shaw is the singer and the other guitarist. He wrote this song.
I love joining y'all on your Rock & Roll journey. It's my life! Anyhow, to you and yours, have a very Merry Christmas!
Mr. Tommy Shaw, meet Asia and BJ!🤪🤪😝😝🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thank you for your reaction.
I saw them the year before they broke up. Well Dennis left. Guy on the keys. I loved every minute of that show!! Absolutely one of the best concerts I have ever seen!!
love the lyrics on this song
That thing BJ was asking about is a whammy bar. It's a bar attached to the guitar that he uses to bend the notes.
Styx are amazing ❤
React to Too Much Time On My Hands another great STYX song
Never saw that it was awesome thanks for reacting to this brought back memories ❤️🥰
My daughter loves this song. She's 20.
Styx "Crystal Ball". Great band and love the channel both of you.
Lead singer is Tommy Shaw and lead guitar is James j, y Young
Hi Asia and BJ, When I was 18 years old I was in the third band that backed up STYX at a show in Wisconsin before they really broke big but there were still 5000 people or more, it gave me goose pimples when we played the BOSTON song "More Than A Feeling", released that same year in 1976
As amazing as this is you must listen to the studio version for the full effects! 💯
Seen them the same year 1983 at the Texas World Music Festival Cotton Bowl Dallas TX better known as the Texas Jam
Styx suggestion Suite Madam Blue
Styx was always an under rated band. Love them!
Styx is, and always will be, a rock band.
I'm guessing this show is from their "Kilroy Was Here" tour.
I saw them on this tour way back in 1983.
Love them live ❤
These guys made a GREAT DVD about 10 years ago i think
STYX - SUITE MADAME BLUE is a ridiculous banger.
MISS AMERICA is a Banger...
They must have twenty five or more major hits...
That was the year that Styx got a little weird with their stage show during the Kilroy tour 1983. They wanted to create more of a Rock Opera with this show. Still great music. Looking forward to more Styx. Thanks and God Bless.
None of them but lead singer liked the Kilroy stuff. Pretty sure it’s part of the reason they s split up
I watch you guys all the time!!! Awesome 😎 Job
It looks like this version is from around 1983, during the "Kilroy Was Here" tour. The album and tour was designed as a reply to evangelical churches after the churches had public "Styx album burnings" because the churches claimed that the previous album "Paradise Theatre" was somehow about devil worship. Yeees!!! One of their older songs. This is so great 👍
The 70s had the best every thing ,And rock in the 70s WAS WOOOOW
You got to hear the original studio version
You all like Come sail away live from the reopening of the Paradise Theater in Chicago Illinois check out Grand Illusion from same concert!
Lol... maybe that's why I never got past the local tristate bar and club gigs, I forgot the Rockstar moves, lol.
First concert I went to. I was more excited about the big venue, the Spectrum, Philly, R.IP.
Hey guys....Styx is presently on tour! They sound amazing still. Catch them if you can. They are perhaps the last of the 70's bands still out there and still sounding great!
The 70s had a t least 30 bands that were formed in the 70s Styx was formed in 1972 Baby
You all need to listen to the studio version.
Seen them live in the 90s with Reo Speed wagon....great concert
WOW Can you imagine being in the 70s when these Late 60s REO and mid 70s Styx Got to gether the 70s were Fantastic What happened to great music ?
In the 70s IT RAINED great songs every DAY , Now you have to look hard for it In the 70s SONGS FELL IN YOUR LAP
