All the internal drama with the band aside, Dennis De Young has one of the greatest voices in rock. They actually shared lead vocals between Dennis, James Young and Tommy Shaw. They all have very different vocal styles. Compare this with Boat on the River and then Miss America.

I agree Miss America is good crank it to 11 song...and Boat on the river is a great choice...but there are a ton of great songs from this band...got to see them back in the mid 70's, they put on one hell of a show...and it was rather fragrant too, if I recall...Rock ON!!!

Styx keyboard player Dennis DeYoung wrote this song about his wife Suzanne, who was his high school sweetheart and a true "lady" who carried herself with class. Other songs he wrote about her include "Babe" and "The Best Of Times."
DeYoung's marriage endured, even through a late '90s health scare that ended his time with the band. He has often exclaimed how much he loves her and what an important part of his life she is.
Dennis DeYoung wrote this song in 1972, but Styx' record company rejected it for their first album, which was released that year. It was included on their second album, Styx II, in 1973 and released as a single, but it went nowhere. According to DeYoung, radio stations didn't know how to classify it, since it started slow and then picked up.
It was only through the efforts of a very persistent DJ on WLS in Chicago (the band's hometown) that the song got its due. Determined to make it a hit, he played the song every night at 8 p.m., until it caught on. It did, and other stations added it to their playlists (when DeYoung first heard it on the radio, he choked on his dinner he was so excited).
It wasn't until March 1975 that the song reached its chart peak of #6, giving them their breakout hit.

Tommy Shaw and James Young also shared in doing lead vocals for different songs. All are very talented and worth the listen.

When I was growing up about 2 hours outside of Chicago, the big station we all listened to was WLS-FM, an huge AM station that we could pick up 2 hours away. In the early 70's, they started playing, "LADY" in constant rotation. Well at the time , no one knew who STYX was at the time. Asia, lead singer on this song is Dennis DeYoung who wrote this song for his wife Suzanne (also the 1979 hit "Babe" was written for her). Theirs is one of rock and roll's great love stories. They were high school sweethearts and married in 1970 and are still married today. This is one of Styx earliest hits and still one of my favorite songs of theirs. They bring out all those vibes that you get when you're in love with someone from the beginning.. the butterflies in the stomach kind of thing. We don't hear that today in the music maybe that's why rock and roll will always be here.. The only ones of his that charted were on the rock charts not the Billboard Hot 100. Name one song he sang other than Miss America and Snowblind (the only one released on the Rock charts that reach 22 and he shared vocals with Tommy because Dennis, who cowrote the song, thought Tommy should take lead.) Classical piano…..beautiful intro…..love tenors…..whole band of em right here! ❤️🎼🎶❤️Dennis DeYoung- also did theatre- he was Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway. Tommy Shaw is the other vocalist, he sings Blue Collar Man, for comparison.👍😎

I bought the album Sytx II because of this song, but fell in love with "A Day" and "Father OSA" on that album.

Dennis De Young and Tommy Shaw are both top tier singers. I don’t think I could choose one over the other lol

Dennis DeYoung along with the harmonies of Tommy and James were a magical combo and they reached the pinnacle of music when they got along in peace. Though good at times later especially their last couple of albums they just lack that special magic that once existed a long time ago. BJ I think the ladies like a cool dry hand not hot wet and clamy!🤪👍🏻❤️☮️🎤🎹

2nd group I fell in love with when I started listening to music (1st was Supertramp). But if you want another amazing love ballad try "I Love You" by Climax Blues Band.

One of my favorite Styx songs ... this song was made for Dennis DeYoung's wife and you Asia.

The reason they called it "Lady '95" (for those curious) was they re-recorded it, when their original Record label Wooden Nickel wanted an excess amount of money, to include it on a Greatest Hits album. So, they did an end around.
