In all of the fuss in 1950 for the best actress Oscar between Gloria Swanson, Bette Davis and winner Judy Holliday this best actor win in 1950 for Jose Ferrer in Cyrano de Bergerac seems to be almost completely forgotten by everyone over the years in a forgotten movie. I had forgotten how strong Jose Ferrer's performance as Cyrano de Bergerac was.

What a wonderful movie. It should have been filmed in color to begin with, so one can better appreciate the richness of the costumes and scenery. Jos'e Ferrer delivers eloquent dialog that inspires. An actor that knows his craft. Such unerring drama combined with wit and tongue - in - cheek humor, well written and performed, a true pleasure to watch.❤😊
Yet strangely he got the chapter of the windmills in Don Quixote wrong. It is chapter 8. An odd mistake for an actor who played the part so wonderfully and not just on film, but on stage.
Grazie
I don't care for this colorization nonsense. but this is an excellent, sharp, clear print, unlike all the blurry versions I've suffered through before.
Superior film version of the classic play. Ferrer is magnificent, heading an accomplished cast of supporting actors. Stylish and swift as Cyrano's swordsmanship!
Good acting? No! Great acting! The very definition of acting! If ever there was a Best Actor Academy Award truly earned, it was this one. One forgets that though exemplary the script was, that it was just that - a script. Words written on paper, yet Jose Ferrer breathed life and love and passion and brilliance into these words. Cyrano come to life in all his poetic glory, his tragic heartbreak of unrequited love, his unflagging honor, his unbound allegiance, his fierce independence. I tell you, this was not good acting. It was magnificent!
Merci beaucoup.
Viva Francia ....Viva Cult Cinema Classics ...Cirano !
Jose's son Miguel looks just like him. He was also an actor. Miguel passed in 2017. One of Jose's ex-wives was Rosemary Clooney. She is sister to Nick Clooney and aunt to George Clooney. Miguels is George's first cousin.
If Cyrano had told Roxana that he loved and adored her, and had sent her masterpieces of poetry and flirtation, she would not have paid any attention to him because of his nose, but when her lover died and the truth was revealed, it was a temporary emotional shock... Women love money first, then beauty.
This is a mans movie. Most certainly before CGI, war, westerns or sports yet so much machismo. I wish people still spoke like this. Such a rich vocabulary.
Greatest play and script ever. They were all real people. But Cyrano was younger than Roxanne and Christian. They were already married when he was a teen still in school. She did mourn Christian’s death for the rest of her life.
It is impossible to make a valid Cyrano in English, this piece was written, in verse, in French! These are the famous tirades of Cyrano, they are part of the greatest texts, of French literature! Specially the nose tirade, because it is made, at the same time, that the duel, and words have a direct relationship to the action!
I grew up with black and white television from 1948 when I was 2years old but years later when old movies were colorized I thought the original films would be destroyed so I was against it but now we can have the original movies preserved and enjoy the ones that are colorized and would be watched by those that would not watch black & white movies at all 🙈
José Ferre’s interpretation is estimable But it is difficult to match the extraordinary performance in the role of Cyrano de Bergerac by French actor Daniel Sorano, who unfortunately died prematurely in the 1960s; It IS literally Cyrano and its composition has so marked the French public during the broadcast of the piece, that it remains the reference in particular his interpretation of the famous tirade of the nose. Famous actors then tried to interpret the role as Jean Paul Belmondo or Gérard Depardieu but their performances never overshadowed that of Sorano;

_Hi, my dearest Helen! This story about Cyrano de Bergerac is for real a great story of Love which happened in old France, during the XVII century, I guess! He was a great poet, but his poetry had been used by a friend of him to conquest a Lovelly girl which Cyrano loves very much!
If Cyrano de Bergerac was alive today in the 21st Century, he could simply arrange to have a plastic surgeon correct the deformity of his overextended nose.

What a great movie! What a great performance by Jose Ferrer. I had no clue he won an Oscar for this movie, but so good to hear.
Jose Ferrer was MAGNIFICENT in this role! What a good movie.
Possibly the greatest film ever.
Certainly for its time.
This is a Genius writing and the actors are at the level with the genius who wrote the scenario.
Truly a memorable performance in the starring role. When the script mattered more than special effects.
One of the best actors i ever saw. Rip José Ferrer and his son the also actor Miguel.

If they used AI upscaling and color adaptation it could be very well done.
