      In all of the fuss in 1950 for the best actress Oscar between Gloria Swanson, Bette Davis and winner Judy Holliday this best actor win in 1950 for Jose Ferrer in Cyrano de Bergerac seems to be almost completely forgotten by everyone over the years in a forgotten movie. I had forgotten how strong Jose Ferrer's performance as Cyrano de Bergerac was.

    What a wonderful movie. It should have been filmed in color to begin with, so one can better appreciate the richness of the costumes and scenery. Jos'e Ferrer delivers eloquent dialog that inspires. An actor that knows his craft. Such unerring drama combined with wit and tongue - in - cheek humor, well written and performed, a true pleasure to watch.❤😊

      Yet strangely he got the chapter of the windmills in Don Quixote wrong. It is chapter 8. An odd mistake for an actor who played the part so wonderfully and not just on film, but on stage.

      Good acting? No! Great acting! The very definition of acting! If ever there was a Best Actor Academy Award truly earned, it was this one. One forgets that though exemplary the script was, that it was just that - a script. Words written on paper, yet Jose Ferrer breathed life and love and passion and brilliance into these words. Cyrano come to life in all his poetic glory, his tragic heartbreak of unrequited love, his unflagging honor, his unbound allegiance, his fierce independence. I tell you, this was not good acting. It was magnificent!

    If Cyrano had told Roxana that he loved and adored her, and had sent her masterpieces of poetry and flirtation, she would not have paid any attention to him because of his nose, but when her lover died and the truth was revealed, it was a temporary emotional shock... Women love money first, then beauty.

    It is impossible to make a valid Cyrano in English, this piece was written, in verse, in French! These are the famous tirades of Cyrano, they are part of the greatest texts, of French literature!
    Specially the nose tirade, because it is made, at the same time, that the duel, and words have a direct relationship to the action!

    Sinopsis: Cyrano de Bergerac es un soldado poeta, filósofo, músico, dramaturgo, escritor, intelectual y el mejor espadachín de París; Un hombre bastante orgulloso y sentimental, pero su mayor defecto es poseer una gran nariz hasta lo ridículo. De hecho, sus compañeros y amistades lo llamaban "Ladrón de Oxigeno". Está enamorado de una mujer hermosa: su prima Roxane; pero, como él es feo, no espera ser correspondido. Roxane, por su parte, está enamorada de Christian de Neuvilette, que es un cadete de soldado. A diferencia de Cyrano, Christian es guapo, pero no posee el ingenio del protagonista.
    Cyrano pacta con Christian escribirle cartas de amor a Roxane, pues de esta forma logrará al menos expresarle a su amada sus sentimientos. Roxane, cada vez más impresionada del espíritu de su amor, confiesa a Christian conmovida, que si bien el amor hacia él comenzó por el atractivo físico, ahora era su alma lo que ella amaba. Esto resulta demoledor para Christian y euforizante para Cyrano, ya que ella menciona que le gustaría aunque fuese feo.
    Pero Christian y Cyrano tienen que partir a la guerra contra los españoles, en la que Christian muere, y le pide a Cyrano que le cuente la verdad de las cartas a Roxane, pero Cyrano no lo hace y Roxane no sabe todavía del amor de Cyrano. Quince años después de la muerte de Christian, Cyrano, envejecido y canoso por la guerra, va a visitar a Roxane al convento donde se retiró después de la muerte de su amado todos los días exactamente a las 6:00 p. m. ella viste de luto, teniendo la última carta que "escribió" Christian en el pecho. Pero un mal día Cyrano se retrasa pues al pasar caminando le cae un gran trozo de madera rompiéndole el cráneo. Le indican que no se puede mover de la cama, pero Cyrano no hace caso; llega adonde Roxane, se disculpa por el retraso (disimulando su herida de la cabeza con el sombrero) y le cuenta las noticias. Roxane le pide que le lea la última carta de Christian. Cyrano acepta y la lee mientras la noche va cayendo, y de golpe se da cuenta de la verdad, aunque Cyrano la niega una y otra vez. Cyrano comienza a recitar versos mientras se despide de ella y bajo la luz de la luna muere.

    José Ferre’s interpretation is estimable
    But it is difficult to match the extraordinary performance in the role of Cyrano de Bergerac by French actor Daniel Sorano, who unfortunately died prematurely in the 1960s;
    It IS literally Cyrano and its composition has so marked the French public during the broadcast of the piece, that it remains the reference in particular his interpretation of the famous tirade of the nose.
    Famous actors then tried to interpret the role as Jean Paul Belmondo or Gérard Depardieu but their performances never overshadowed that of Sorano;

      O personagem do Cyrano de Bergerac existiu e foi um poeta, dramaturgo e pensador francês contemporâneo de Boileau e Molière, considerado um libertino, devido a sua atitude desrespeitosa para com as instituições religiosas e seculares. Ele também é considerado um dos precursores da ficção científica. Mas a história da obra de Edmond Rostand na qual se baseia o filme é fictícia.

      The Control Voice: There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We can reduce the focus to a soft blur, or sharpen it to crystal clarity. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Outer Limits.😎
