First read this in high school 50+ years ago. Read it in French in college. Was the fencing champion of my freshman class. A classic story of epic personality, my lifetime hero. Thank you Edmond Rostand for your literary contribution, which has travelled with me all my life since. May all young men read it for themselves, and be some small replica of Cyrano, to their own benefit, and to all of us as well.
“Happy? I am going to be a storm-a flame- I need to fight whole armies alone; I have ten hearts; I have a hundred arms; I feel too strong to war with mortals- BRING ME GIANTS!” my God, what a line.
My first viewing of this version and in English!

A monumental film! Can't remember how many times I have seen it throughout the years. Ferrer received an Oscar when the Oscars had a true meaning of reward...my opinion, of course.

One of my favorite films and plays of all time. Jose Ferrer is so utterly tremendous and heartbreaking and Mala Powers is so lovely and true as Roxanne.

All men long for a Roxanne, all women a Cyrano. "We all have our old wounds", says the beautiful Roxanne. Love longed for, love hoped for, and love that escapes our grasp....is the fate of fools. A fool because we fear the rejection of love that could bring us happiness for a lifetime. We all live in our own little fantasy world, and the best we can do is to try and make that fantasy a reality.

I've prized this film since I was a kiddo, and I've watched it more times than I could possibly count. Something fun I just noticed, triggered because of much more recent movies I've seen, is what a great friend Cyrano's friend, Le Bret, is really a solidly quality friend. This came to mind because of the main character friends I've been seeing in the more recent movies, which are usually destructive, foolish, and at least distracting influences on the main character. Which, though I'm aware this is done for comedic relief, I feel it lowers the tone of most any film and degrades the credibility of the main character as an adult (assuming the main character isn't supposed to be a half-wit).
I enjoy that for all Cyrano's prowess in wit, cunning, and the sword, where all who know him respect him, La Bret as his dearest friend doesn't flinch at telling Cyrano he's being a "fool" while smilingly sharing his friend's eccentric moments. And at the point right after the play is closed, when Ragueneau the pastry cook comes to our deuo seeking protection, and Cyrano announced he'll fight them all but tells Le Bret "not you", his friend demonstrates such fond respect as he lets Cyrano go do his thing, fighting 100 men alone and all that, then shared in Cyrano's casual boasting after the fight. Such a groovy friendship, and one more shining detail in a glorious film.
Jose Ferrer- actor extraordinaire! Here, in Caine Mutiny, Moulin Rouge- 1950, and so many other fine films. Where has hollywood gone?

For me, Jose Ferrer IS Cyrano; as Laurence Olivier is Heathcliff; Gregory Peck is Atticus; Anthony Quinn is Zorba; Topol is Tevye; Yul Brenner is Pharoah; Kier Dullea is David (David and Lisa); etc...
It does not diminish the greatness of Depardieu as Cyrano, which was also a perfect casting for the time ~ 31 years ago!
I saw Jose Frerrer's Cyrano first, at a young age, so I have a collateral bias. No disrespect to Depardieu lovers.

I saw this film on our small b&w tv when I was a kid, early 1960’s. I was glued to Jose Ferrer’s performance. I never forgot it. He touched something inside me and I never forgot.

I watched this for the first time as a romantic teenager on the late, late movie I'm sure. I was so in love. I bought the book. The play. I watched it, read it and cried each time. Taking my literature finals there was an excerpt from the book that had to be broken down and analyzed. Lucky me. All I had to do was answer the questions. Later I bought this on DVD.
The swordplay in this film is monumental.
It really is, no CG, no modern techniques, just actors being impressively skilled.

One of the best films I've ever seen! I've never seen it before and it's just perfection in every way. Yes, Ferrer is genius in the role but everything about this film is a gem too; the directing, the sword fighting, even the battle sequence was so well done. That tone somewhere between fantasy and reality, comedy and tragedy. I will definitely watch this again and I can only say that about a handful of films. Thank you for putting this on youtube!
It IS perfect, Gary. I totally agree. It is a master class in screenplay adaptation. Art design, cinematography and some of best sword fighting choreography ever filmed. The tone is so beautifully poised because of Jose Ferrer's possession of Cyrano. but all the cast is so perfectly attuned to the romantic ideal of this breathlessly wonderful story

A small anecdote regarding José Ferrer...in the 1940's he performed Iago with Paul Robeson (Othello) in B'way. At the end of the show, the public would wait for Ferrer to lynch him! he was so good and convincing. If you ever visit Puerto Rico, don't miss visiting the historical cemetery in San Juan and see the impressive tomb of the Ferrer family with a statue of José as a teenager...
This motion picture is magnificent. I saw this on TV way back in the 20th century ; circa 1968. I would have been 10. I was so enamoured of Cyrano that I read Edmond Rostand's play and caught up with every version I could in the decades following. And there have been a lot of Cyrano's since then. But Mr Ferrer is, for me , the only Cyrano. And what a fantastic screenplay adaptation.

55:12 - 55:37 Roxanne's explanation of her high standards rocked me to my core when I first saw this, and it's still my favorite part of the story and the one my mind calls back to most often. Before this point I'd been writing her off as an empty headed beauty, and not only was I appallingly wrong, but she's doing it on purpose! It'd be generous to say the odds are stacked against her, there are no odds for women in her time. They shouldn't be, but they *are* prizes. Exactly like she says. Why would she not take advantage? Why shouldn't she deserve a lover who meets her every beck and call? It's not like she has a choice to be her own person. This bit of dialogue could've been written yesterday it's so pointed and snappy.
But as well as fleshing out Roxanne as a character it also exonerates Cyrano, for if he could've been accused of only wanting Roxanne so desperately because she's unattainable (In his own faltering estimation anyway, see the ending), it's almost certainly obvious that's untrue now. He sees what most people don't see in her. It just makes their relationship all the more believable and intriguing.
I see the problem as two-fold; Cyrano's self-deprecation borders on the pathological. Even when Le Bret points out that the servant girl did not recoil from him (and in fact, given her reaction, lost her heart in that moment to Cyrano) he only begins to believe that his fondest wish could be true. When Roxanne tells him about Christian, you can literally watch his soul crumble to pieces. After that, no amount of convincing, even from Roxanne herself, would convince him that he is worth the love he so desperately wants.
And Roxanne is either completely oblivious to Cyrano's adoration (hard to believe) or knows full well and ignores it. Either way, she is part of the problem, and in no way part of the solution. Until, of course, it's too late.
@@peterross97 We're supposed to think Cyrano's insecurities cripple him and do so needlessly, the entire point is that he takes his nose and blows it out of proportion (As opposed to the more productive kind of blowing I suppose 😅) and isn't allowing the jeers to roll off his back in face of his exhaustive list of accomplishments, so it is a problem of course, just not one that's a flaw with the story like I had been thinking my initial complaints were (That Roxanne was a dull knife so to speak and Cyrano loved strongly but emptily) but didn't at all by the time the curtain drew closed.
Believing that Roxanne knows and is keeping it to herself is another matter, I could see someone thinking she's too unlikable to really be a proper match for Cyrano after that, and that would be understandable as a problem with the story itself, but if that is the case with her I personally think "ignoring" is the wrong word for what she's doing. "Neglecting" maybe, which is closely related to the obliviousness side of things and it's the theory I subscribe to. Roxanne may be thinking deep down it's too wonderful for her cousin to love her in that way, it's clear she adores him but perhaps she shut herself off to the possibility of its being that more courtly love long ago.
Like Cyrano she's a hopeless romantic, but there's a practicality in hers that Cyrano just lacks completely, so I think my reading of it holds up. But I can also see your side of it. I guess I just enjoy that it is a question of where her mind is, not everything has to be spoon fed.

Just one of the reasons it's my favorite play, and my favorite movie (1951 version) though the Gerard Depardieu version has a lot going for it, namely the costumes are MUCH better. Not to mention that battle scene. I think we can both agree that Jose's depiction of Cyrano is one of the best in history and will remain so for a very long time.
@@peterross97 I don't "crush" on actors easily but Ferrer in this is just so stupendous in how dashing and witty (Yet it's a substantial wit, not the kind that passes with age and being hardened) his Cyrano is that I can't really help it. It's a great favorite to have, in fact I've never really minded that Ferrer won best actor that year over William Holden in Sunset Boulevard, which is very near the top of my favorites list personally, so that's saying something.
@@peterross97 Cyrano's love for Roxanne is not at all pathological. It would be if he met her perhaps a year or two before, seeing her at the theater the way Roxanne did when first saw Christian. He grew up with her. He played with her. He had years to take in and appreciate her nature and beauty as it grew in her. I can't imagine a more compelling love than that.
I do watch this film over and over through the years. Never get tired. This is the best film adaptation of Cyrano

My 7th grade English teacher had our class read the whole book version of Cyrano. Me and my class finally finished the book after 3 whole months. My teacher said we would watch the movie version in 1 week from now. I won’t spoil myself, but I can’t wait!

An excellent adaptation of the French work. My favorite Cyrano is embodied by Daniel Sorrano reminding me of Jose Ferrer. Both actors are charimastic and play their roles sometimes with passion, sometimes with restraint but always with elegance.

I was just thinking of this movie. And it showed up on my home page. I wander how Alan Rickman what have played Cyrano de Bergerac. Pity he never did, it would have been phenomenal.
I was thinking Ferrer's performance was a cross between Rickman and Robert Stephens.
The subtitles I am seeing are worse than gibberish. Cyrano would have seen off the fool responsible
"Shall I ruin your happiness because I was.born with a pretty face, am I to ruin yours because I have the power to say what you perhaps feel" this is the line that conviced me that this poetry was no ordinary poetry, not held back, not ashamed with what the heart and mind discuss in their recesses. To feel melancholy just for a sec and even it's bitterness to sweet to behold. That is love. 😅😅

My favorite movie of my all time favorite play. I was lucky enough to see Cyrano preformed at Stratford with Colm Feore in the title role. He was brilliant but Jose Ferrer...his performance is without peer.

I was born in 1952. I saw this film as a boy with my father. My mother told me that it was one of his favorites. I grew up with Errol Flynn movies and Zorro. This film affected my life dramatically. I just wanted to let you know that I will not tell the unsolicited story. But that speech about freedom became my code throughout my life. It might be the code of Sigma Male. I may not have gotten far, but I never had to kiss the hem of anyone's cloak to get where I am now, and I'm doing alright. I will intimate this much, I did become a competitive fencer and got far enough to fence in national championships a few times. Michael D'Saro, who was an Olympic Coach at San Jose State University in California said, "We get the dedicated dreamers." I had a life of adventures and finally married a fairy princess in an eleventh-century castle in Slovenia in 1999. I had a WW1 Geman Cavalry Saber with me. I did the dream and we are living as happily ever after as conscious people can in the times we're in.

It's a very well choreographed scene but in various styles the main use of the rapier was to thrust not to give so many cuts or slaps to the blade of the opponent.
