I’ve used those rough in box’s on several installs. The only issue I ever ran into was during install. I had a hard time getting the evaporator head to mount flush to the wall. I started to offset the rough in box instead of centering it. That helped with getting everything to fit in the box and allow the evaporator to mount tightly to the mounting bracket.

Man, all props to your work, and that rough in box is cool! It really feels like the homeowner did the design of this themselves... a whole attic, new construction, and still opting for conventional high-wall ductless heads??? Plus those pumps are crazy loud...
Really seems like they could've used a little advice in the planning stage on how to just get a ducted system in there, or at least choose a better type of ductless head for the application.

very true, lots of space for some ductwork. I try to avoid those pumps whenever I can too, working on them is never fun, good old gravity drain done right never has issues

Martin , you hit the nail on the head👍. Plus there’s a basement to take full advantage of (basement duct work and air returns in every room, excluding bathrooms and kitchen). Basements make it so easy.

I agree with you. I’m from Alberta,Canada.
We have fresh air requirements we need to meet by code. That is why we use ducted systems-plus we need heat 70% of the year. HRV is tied into the ductwork of the furnace. Or you could do a stand alone HRV system in this case. You need fresh air or this is going feel like a 1970’s apartment. Yuck! My first thought when he said condensate pumps was what about the sound.

I just put in one of those little pumps for the Mitsubishi. They could have benefited from a ducted cassette installed in the attic with ductwork to all the rooms. 1 lineset 1 drain line and much better comfort overall considering you can hit the bathrooms and more even distribution.

That's what I would have done, but ductwork is not cheap; this is likely much cheaper and will overall provide enough comfort for what the client likely prioritizes.

I've used both mini splits and central.
For me personally I prefer a central hvac over mini splits.
Main reason is just overall comfort in every single room in your house including all bathrooms, walk in closets and utility rooms.
To get that level of comfort with mini splits it would require a head per every room in the house which would be extremely expensive and wouldn't make sense when you can just go with one large HVAC system for the whole house.
The other con going with mini splits especially on an already existing home is all the line sets running all around the outside of house especially if you're going with multiple heads which is a major eyesore.
For larger homes you definitely want to go central. I live near Nashville and every builder of a new construction house is still going with central because of the same reasons.
Really not that much of a price difference on electric bill as most people think because you're still not heating or cooling all those smaller rooms in the house.
A central hvac distributes all air evenly throughout every room in the house.

It’s all preference, ductwork leaks and breaks down over time and is always a pain to replace in a finished home. Not to mention if you want good airflow distribution, you need a proper air balance done. That is rare in residential homes. Both mini splits and central systems have pros and cons. The only real difference is if you are more comfortable working on one vs the other.

Central split system is the only way to go when you have a basement;Plus air balancing is not a problem when you put air return in every room (except for the bathrooms and kitchen ) and it’s easy to do when you have a basement with equipment inside the condition envelope.

Even on two stories we put the second floor furnace in the basement and send the ductwork up between the walls & chases, the architect and builder supplies us with.

I can install Mini Splits all day. Walk in the park. What I really need to know and want to see is videos on service of the mini splits. They are much more complex than traditional air conditioning period show us when you get inside one of those things

Its pretty basic. If it's leaking, you just recover the refrigerant that's left and then weigh the new charge in after fixing the leak. Mini splits are usually either gonna leak or have a part failure like a board. Not too crazy to deal with.
Any mini split with a vfd is gonna make it so that you can pretty much just weigh the charge in after fixing the leak. Even with large vrf systems, the way you go about it is basically yeah same thing just weigh in a new charge. The software can do a bunch, but the only real fix im aware of ia to remove and confirm the new charge weight matches what you need.

For future reference look into the blue diamond pumps we use them. You can fit the pump and the reservoir in the back on the unit. Looks clean and there the quietest on the market

I just installed a MRCOOL 4 zone mini-split system. I came up through the floor into closet areas and used the 7.5' cover kits to hide the pipes, the head units were installed on the opposite side in the interior rooms. They did not recommend that you put these units inside the walls in case you needed to service them in the future, so I am good. .....But I am having a different problem.....
It's been about 3 weeks now, temps in the 90's, the system is working great so far. But I have a problem. I am experiencing severe headaches in the mornings, and brutal insomnia (no sleep) being around these AC heads. I can tell you it IS the heads causing me grief. I bought an EMF meter to detect the radiation being emitted from these things as I cannot be near these at night trying to sleep. It's been miserable.
The EMF meter I bought is a cheaper model and doesn't work well, unless you believe that ketchup and a can of Pepsi are spiking with EMF?
I've got to buy a better EMF meter, also have the power company come out and scan these things. I don't know if it's the wire, or the fans that are causing me my problem? It's a 230 volt system, not 110 current. I'm a little bit pissed that I stepped into this issue. I am sensitive to EMF waves and I could of just reinstalled central AC as I had the ducting....Well, I did have it set up until I ripped some of it out.
The internet says it is possibly dryness of the air, but I call BS on that, everybody is a liar these days especially corporations and governments.
Today I was outside next to the condenser when it was running for about 2 hours and the headache was returning again. I bought some aluminum window screen and wrapped the wire as it enters into the living space, as the waves cannot pass through the small size of the mesh of the metal screen. It seemed to help some, but not a perfect cure yet.
I had a portable AC unit, and then a window AC unit earlier in this year while I installed this MRCOOL system and they both caused me the same headache problem. I am sensitive to EMF, and have diabetes which according to some books is caused by electricity, and I believe that from my first hand experience. To find out that this system is also emitting high EMF apparently? I'm kept cool, but can you live without sleep?
Your power wire is way bigger than the ones supplied by MRCOOL so maybe that matters? I can run the bedroom unit till ice cold in the master then shut it off before bed is my current work around. I have yet to get my first power bill to see what it draws, but I think it will be less than the central AC system I once had. I also will mention something else that I ran into. I bought this DIY system from Home Depot and HD did me wrong. I had extra line sets, and communication wire, and a coupler kit after installation that I didn't need, but I could NOT return them for a partial refund inside of the 30 days policy. So they broke there own terms of sale. I didn't make the terms, they did.
Home Depot will not take back a partial system, and shipping wasn't free either, it was $110 dollars (orders over $45 are free shipping) NOT. This system keeps me very cool, cost me $4700. and is very quiet when running, but the EMF issue is causing me troubles.

Well yes anything with magnets, motors, solenoids, etc will make an emf. Which this unit uses all of them. Can’t say much about Mr cool system as it’s diy and I only install Mitsubishi.

Ruffin boxes are great thing I’ve use them here in South Carolina and the only issue that I have seen is the lack of insulation on the box causes sweating if you dump straight into it

Let me know how that goes for you. Used something similar before and had the dry wallers cover it. Also what pump are you going to use those boxes say you can fit an inline pump in them never found that to be the case. Idk maybe they have gotten better

J&B air, my thoughts exactly. Basements are rare in Tennessee and when you get one why not take advantage (?). I’m assuming he’s going to put another mini split in the basement.I am in the Saint Louis Metropolitan area where 98%of the new homes have basements and I have never seen mini splits installed in new builds with basements. It will work but I’d hate to be the guy Who replaces the equipment in the next 15 to 20 years. Maybe he’ll give us some insight why this option was decided upon.

Plus with the basement he’s got a lot of options (zone dampers, Central D humidifier, fresh air make up system, humidifier) all possible when you have a basement and easy access.

Nice work! That Mitsubishi unit should have no problem keeping them comfortable all year round with that insulation job they did. It was smart to do ductless, I think a conventional system wouldn’t be able to dehumidify well enough with all the exterior walls and roof being spray foamed. Thanks for the video.

The spray foam foam insulation holds in moisture making it difficult for a ducted system to remove enough humidity unless you install an additional whole house dehumidifier which is added installation and operation cost.

Yikes I would've went with 3/8" copper it's sturdier and if they ever get rodents they'll chew right through that water line like they can smell the cold water from the drain lol. Many resturants have that problem and it becomes a nightmare lol

I would have just ran the drain down the wall to eliminate having a whole other component to break down like a pump. Also you could have avoided having potential leak points by just running the pipe all the way home the first time instead of being lazy and just stubbing it into the attic.

I think the standard grille and vents are quite ugly and they're flushed .... but a giant head on the wall that sticks out like a sore thumb is quite ridiculous. I think ductless are for retrofits rather than new construction.
