I utterly adore Shall We Dance? It was my favorite movie for a few years. The characters are utterly unforgettable.

Back in the 90s, I took some grief from friends for watching Siskel & Ebert. But if not for their program, I would have never have watched little gems like the Japanese version of Shall We Dance. Eve's Bayou and The Secret of Roan Inish also come to mind.

I love Contact, even as a kid. The last act, I admit, is a bit of a sentimental cop-out, just like Interstellar, but still 9/10.

In "4 Little Girls" how, how, HOW does a parent even begin to explain this incomprehensible, unconscionable, egregious thing called racism to their 6-year-old girl. I can't even conceive of how you do that. In "The Big Sleep" Warner panicked when he saw how Lauren Bacall was panned in her second movie. "The Big Sleep" is in my top 20 all-time favorites, and I've seen the comparisons many times, and it is really interesting. (for me at least) Love watching these Siskel and Eberts, thanks.

Regarding "Contact", I haven't read the book, but in the movie when Foster asks her "outer space" father about who built the device and he responds, "We didn't build it. We don't know who did." It makes me wonder Foster's deceased mother had anything to do with it.

Contact is a very special movie. My favorite part is when Jodie Foster's character discovers a celestial event so magnificent that it shakes her to her core and inspires her to finally find her faith and serenity in a benevolent higher power. "They should have sent a poet." Her performance really moved me.

One thing I hated about Contact is how they portrayed Matthew McConaughey’s weak, slow pitch, bush league theological questions to Jodie Foster like they were some super clever “gotcha” questions that would cause an atheist to get flustered and unable to respond. Much like that idiot McConaughey himself. He doesn’t make one strong argument for the existence of god, but he’s written like he’s some genius. Big fail.

Indeed, "Contact" is a vapid theologically illiterate movie. What would you expect from something based on a book by Carl ("billions and billions") Sagan?
