I've listened to Tool for years and over time its gotten easier to pick out the particular patterns Danny tends to play. I try to watch as much live video of his performances as I can and also play along with the recordings several times in order to match what I hear. In all, it's a culmination of best-guesses and luck.
Thanks for watching, and keep at it.
Dude. That. Was. Fucking. Awesome.
how dare we share phonetically similar names but not similar drum skills
Best cover drummer on UA-cam. This guy nails on the intricacies every time. Doesn't skip on any details.
Jon Hill please return to youtube with more tool songs
Yeah, there is a lot of intricate Tool songs he didn't cover yet, like 'Third Eye' and 'Reflection'.
Qliphirot oh jesus, Jon's skill and his style on drums would make the cover of 'Reflection' such an interesting watch. Is he still studying at Berklee?
2:03 "you are the chosen one"
*eyes wide open in shock*
Great drumming man - effortlessly played as it should be done. You're very talented and I hope you go very far with your music career.
Daaaamn, i thought you took this down, couldnt find a while back for some reason. Best version of this cover on youtube, and you did it long before so many others. Been watching this vid for years, and I come back to watch you play this several times a year. Please never take it down.
Your fanatical dedication to the brilliance of mastered rudiments is not only obvious but astounding. The endless hours of double paradiddles is enough to make some sane men crazy. You apparently found the route to mastery of the fundamentals. Truly impressive.
Basically...your hands play a simple 3/4 flam tap pattern while, at the same time, your left foot and left hand play 3/4 quarter notes (left hand accents each third quarter note while left foot keeps time in quarter notes). Also, at the same time, the right foot plays a 5/4 accent pattern. Hope that helps!
I actually laughed several times watching this. I was mind blown and couldn’t even process how the hell you do this. Just incredible. Sometimes ya gotta shake your head, grin, and acknowledge that people can do things on a certain level that’s incomprehensible. Hell of a job buddy. Thanks for making my night 👍🤟
This is so tight and thick with energy. Superb job, sir!!!
THIS NEEDS MORE VIEWS, FEW PEOPLE HAVE EVER COVERED ROSETTA PERFECTLY
As a bass player that loves to play Tool covers, I've only ever know 2 drummers that could pull it off and even then it was only on earlier stuff...your polyrhythms where super tight...you are amazing. Hats off to you, sir.
Personally, attempting swiss triplets and polyrythyms together made my brain implode while attempting to ramp up to playing this song. This young man makes playing this complex Tool track look easy. Amazing, and thank you for the upload!!
I'm your same age and there is no way I could play this as flawlessly as you do, Incredible job.
I really enjoy watching drummers using all the tools they're given and using them well, especially when playing along to Tool.
John Hill and his infinite chill.
From 7:05 - 8:40 is definitely the hardest part of the song. The polyrhythm required is unreal. Good job!!
and this boy kicks ass!
sukumade t= tom, k=kick, s=snare, r=rest
(2+3)/8 bass kick pattern (krkrr and repeat)
quarter notes on the left foot hi-hat
his left hand I think is doing a rttrttrtsrtt dotted eighth note pattern (as if it were a 12/16 meter section) sectioning the snare perfectly on the third quarter note
while his right is also doing the same eighth note pattern but the "rest" is different 11r22r33r22r (they're numbered cuz they all look like toms to me lol)
Definitely badass xO
I ALMOST have it figured out. Man is it taking some work. It took me about five nights of studying just to work out how the bass drum and the snare correlate, nevermind the rest of the hand stuff. I can actually play it, but I'm just short of cleaning up the transitions.
I really really want to upload a cover of this song, but I have to work out the impediment of not having a double bass pedal, and I don't want to get one, because I know that, other than covers like this one, I'd never use it.
ILikeWafflz i would love to see it if/when you upload it
It's so much easier to figure out what the isolated parts are doing and then adding all the parts together later. It's impossible to figure this part out melodically because there's just too much going on. For example, start off with the left foot. The left foot is playing quarters. The right foot? Playing the 1st and 3rd note of a five note grouping. The hands are playing three note groupings that overlap .. what does that mean? Swiss army triplet!
Good luck!
By far the most accurate cover of this song on UA-cam. Sticking, Dynamics, poly-rhythms. Everything was damn near spot on.
I swear I've watched this video over 100 times over the past 4 years. The movements and the subtleties you need to do to nail this song are just mesmerizing. Definitely a great drummer.
Wow. Possibly the best tool drum cover i've ever heard. Solid.
I believe this is the 9th time I've watched this video. phenomenal
deserved :)
But it would take me 10,000 days to figure out how to play that song....
HANDS DOWN! Best teenager drummer on UA-cam......without a doubt! Dude is a unbelievable talent. What a masterpiece that was
You are definately one oof the top drummers i have heard on youtube!
Five years of looking up drum covers of songs on youtube, and this is the best one I've ever seen. I actually keep having to close my mouth.
Where're your 10,000,000 views and youtube money? This cover is still incredible with bottomless replay value.
This is by far the best drum cover of Rosetta Stoned I have ever seen to date!
5 years on I know but look up John kew, guy is a genius. Wrote out the full notation for this and everything
It does look emotionless BUT you are who you are and play how you play. Your skills are very obvious and you are an unreal musician. Keep up the amazing art.
Autokreig I wouldn't call it a lack of emotion- more like intense concentration.
Emotions are in Composition. Koncentration is in musician
holy shit... that is the best cover of the hardest tool song
All nothing but the best tool covers dude , you gotta be the only drummer on this level worth watching , keep it up and all the best.
You should be really proud of this man, yo obviously know how difficult it is and you shouldn't let anyone tell you this was anything but flawless. Good shit
I agree mista!! a cover of those two songs would be simply awesome!!
Whoever is in the back is either wishing being something he is not, or just mesmerized as shit! The best cover of this absurdity!
That's his brother. He does all the recording, mixing, and mastering of the covers and videos
nailed it...blu suede shoes and all...elvis would be proud
Jon "the legend" Hill
That was an incredible performance! What an insanely badass accomplishment to learn that song. Hats off...
Bro.... Bro!!! Danny would be proud. That was sick!!! Well done!!
This is by tool's trickiest song to play and you have such good technique, this was a perfect cover. I can't get my mind around the patterns danny does in the middle of the song in that strange 3/4 pattern which revolves around paradiddles and alternating doubles.. soo good well done.
Nice job on that complicated drum roll! Nailed it!
5.56-11.48...best part......super cover bro....hats off....to u man
A travesty this only has 90k views. This song takes tremendous effort and control. Anyone complaining of an "emotionless" effort doesn't know the half of it. Bravo!
Also, love the way the drums are tuned!
7:06 That independence
Bravo Mate!. Just like the Big Man himself, you seem to do this with hardly any effort or pretentiousness at all. All hail the King and his Prodigy's. Well Done!
Excellent job man! I began to play the drums about a year ago and Tool is one of the most difficult bands's drums to play... Kudos!
Dude, this is ridiculous. This is the most complex cover I've seen on UA-cam. 11 minutes and 48 seconds of perfection. You need to be discovered.
Wow. Perfectly tuned kit as well.
Danny carey: master of polyrhythms. I saw him live once and it was the most amazing thing I ever saw. masterfully done bro.
And years later I keep coming back to this same video. Man you are fucking awesome!
WOW! Amazing!
WOW! AMAZING!!
BEAUTIFUL!!!
You know a cover is good when it makes you go "Oh my Gawd". Props to you man.
Perfect!!!!
This is a really good cover, best playing of Tool I have seen since tbartels007
wow., just wow.
YESSSSS. I've been waiting for this cover, and it was well worth the wait. Amazing job.
Wow. Fantastic
Phenomenal. Those polyrhythms!
Absolutely amazing. Total props to you for nailing that song!
This is unreal, it's perfect!
That's awesome!
You just blew my mind. Thank you.

That was sooooooooooooo awesome
Extremely well played. One of my favourite Tool songs and you nailed it!
Absolutley flawless.

EPIC, Epic win.
NAILED IT!!
Amazing. Also awesome to jam to!
! Tool always sounds like an excellent choice! Love the cover!
I have been looking for your channel but couldn’t find it. Luckily it just popped up on the algorithm.
the little section from 5:29 to 5:42 was rock solid. so clean.
And you handled my favorite section of the entire song after the first "g** damn, sh** the bed!" with ease. I was hypnotized man.
good job. and whoever tuned those drums is pretty damn good.
Extremely precise and well-executed cover. This is by far the best drum cover ive seen on Rosetta Stoned. And splendid job on the polys in the middle part aswell.
Great stuff
Jon this is amazing
muito bom! meus parabéns!
Great job. Poly-rhythms are bang on. A+
Came here randomly, left feeling pumped to go about the rest of the day, great drumming!
