And to know Stephen Colbert had a burst appendix WHILE doing this interview. Simply amazing. On the part of both actors!
Steven said he kept it from both guest that night. Bradley didn't know.
I woulda been in the fetal position, guy is built showbiz tough
I know I had to go find this interview to see if there was any evidence of his appendix situation while he was doing this because I know this was one of the moments that might where he was in BAD shape... to think he almost died...
The pain stops after it bursts. The bacteria flooding your system is painless.
Thanks for your comment. I just watched the interview with John Oliver where he talks about this interview. I missed it originally so I came here to see it.
It’s shocking to now know that Stephen stayed with this interview with a ruptured appendix yet was so masterfully engaged.
Knowing Colbert was in agony while doing this interview makes it even better. He's an amazing host.
Thanks so much for your support
Bradley cooper is so humble, he always gives props to his co-artists and takes back stage for them to shine. He’s such an amazing human.
Well that is only the decent thing to do...film making and acting ARE collaborative.
@@anmnouagreed. Any sniveling appreciation of a star that somehow does the obvious causes me to do an eye roll. 🙄😉
He’s a king!!
Not a big movie person but have to admire any performer that spends 6 years to prepare for a 6 minute segment in a film .
I know very little about Bernstein. I look forward to watching this movie.
I know someone who’s already seen this film and said it is a masterpiece
What do you mean six minute segment? He made the whole film.
@@Rubylove48 He's not conducting in the whole film. It doesn't focus on his work from what I hear.
That’s not the point, the man, write, acted ain and directed the whole frickin film as well as conducting. It was not six years for just those six minutes it was his whole life for the whole film. ✌🏽🤡@@nancykerrigan
Sometimes Colbert reaches the heights of the great talk show hosts, especially if he's truly interested in what a guest has to say. This is one of those.
What? He interrupted Cooper and talked over the top of him. Bradley is an intellectual and very polite, but if Colbert let him finish his thoughts the interview would have been a lot better. 😳
@@Rubylove48 Yup, true!
I agree! Worst interviewing ever. Cmon Colbert!!! You can do much better than this!!!
I turned it off less than half way through because of Colbert talking over his guest.
I wish he had more time to discuss this movie
Give Stephen the Emmy for this interview! He’s brilliant 🎉❤
It’s seven minutes…
That’ll go to Howard sterns Springsteen interview
And he was having an appendix burst crisis that sent him to the ER shortly after.(!)
I was a faithful watcher of the Young People’s Concerts program when I was a kid. It’s tragic that there is nothing like it on broadcast television now.
I'm an elementary music teacher and I model my lessons after his Young People's concerts!
I thought Leonard Bernstein was a very well known figure, did I understood correctly that only 2% of people on a coffee shop would recognize the name?@@MrWelfle
Kudos to Steven Colbert for keeping his shit together while he was in excruciating pain during the taping of this interview. Did he know that his pain was caused by his appendix, which had already burst while he was taping this interview.
Bradley is passionate about what he does and how he goes about expressing his life’s passion and purpose. His comment ( while laughing at himself) “ I was ridiculously eloquent, in my own mind”. The man exudes humility and confidence onstage and in films.
I like Bradley but he does not strike me as humble. He self described himself as having a great work ethic
I loved those Young People’s Concerts growing up, and to this day, Bernstein, is most likely the only concert conductor most Americans have heard of. I appreciate his dedication to making this film. The physical resemblance was uncanny
The way Stephen speaks with such speed and urgency speaks to his immense love for Bernstein and respect for Cooper.
And his immense need for emergency surgery
Colbert’s conversations with his guests can be the most interesting and meaningful of all the late night hosts.
This was one of the really great ones. Thanks to both.
I agree. Colbert is currently tops. Especially in both wit and interviews.
Mahler's music is Heavenly. His 2nd Symphony titled The Resurrection is a good example. Bradley Cooper was perfect in his portrayal of Leonard Bernstein!!!
@@Bradlycooper403 I am an American born in 1947 in San Antonio Texas. Migrated to Queensland Australia in 1982. I play timpani in my community Orchestra called The Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra. My favourite composer is Mahler as his music is Heavenly. The 2 last minutes of his 3rd Symphony has 2 timpanists pounding out the ending notes. I am amazed that you transitioned from the movie The Sniper to the Maestro movie . Did you get an education from the Conductor that tutored you ?
@@user-wp4ju4hp5w That’s really good 😊 thanks for your support without a fan like you I’m nothing. Well I’m very private man so I’m gonna my email so you can sent me text but though I don’t normally text anyone here but i think you deserve it
As a lover of classical music, I enjoyed the heck out of last year's Tar and am excited for Maestro and American Symphony. There's just something magical about a room full of people gathered to play and listen to complex and often wordless music. Maybe it's because it hearkens back to an era before the information overload of today, or because it evokes a sense of nostalgia for a time I never lived through.
Whatever the reason, I hope movies and documentaries with music front and center keep getting made by people with passion and insight.
Well said.
That Candide quote by the band was a nice touch. 🎉
Six years of studying and preparing for a character. That is dedication. 😊
and that was just for Rocket Raccoon!
Love him! So humble and kind, funny and talented!
Hope to find a theater showing it now. Two extremely talented men, Leonard Bernstein And Bradley Cooper. Bradley's dedication to his craft is so immense & inspiring as an actor. His ability to change his look to any character or day to day life is amazing. Hes like a human chameleon, or perhaps a shapeshifter Lol. His talents astound me. Best of luck at the Oscars. It's your turn to be recognized for your multi talents. ❤
Nice to see him so relaxed. An intimate conversation of two people we were priviledged to listen to.
Yes, Lenny, you gave us, me, happiness and passion lived.
We love bradley Cooper and Stephen colbert
Really hope he wins the Oscar - he really deserves it and well overdue.
I remember watching Bradley
Cooper in 'Alias' years ago. He
has really grown as an artist. l'm
very happy to see him being
recognized for his efforts. He
deserves every accolade he
receives! Well done, Mr. Cooper!
Bradley Cooper often interviewed on his own in talk shows. Brilliant
I tip my hat to Louis Cato and The Late Night Band. They played Cooper on with a ‘talk show standard’, a passage from the overture to the operetta ‘Candide’.
Bravissimo.
Thank you. I recognised that tune from somewhwere, but had no idea where it came from.
@@jeffclement2468
Bernstein wrote the operetta and Dick Cavett used that passage as the theme to his show.
Someone in that band has very thorough understanding of music and talk shows.
Glitter and Be Gay
@@faithinverity8523 No doubt that's where I know it from. Watched Cavett any chance I got. Thx again.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed!!! Specifically it's from the soprano aria Glitter and be Gay, I sang that beastly thing a few times college and this arrangement is FIRE
The music played by the Late Night Band from 13 seconds through 29 seconds into this video while Bradley Cooper is walking on stage is Leonard Bernstein’s theme to his Opera “Candide”, but played in an Afro-Cuban-Latin-Jazz Style, a la “West Side Story”. That is so cool!
I saw Maestro with Bradley Cooper in the theater 5 months ago for a test screening. Seeing it again tomorrow, can't wait! Really enjoyed the film, hope it's just as good the 2nd time 👌🎥🍿.
great actor, great writer, great director. this man can do it all and he seems like a good guy too. i can't wait to see this!!
This interview is exactly why Stephen Colbert is the goat. His questions are always just so perfect.
Thanks for your support
I love Bradley's work, and I've always admired Leonard Bernstein. I can't wait to see this film. The previews look AMAZING.
How on earth did Stephen pull this off? I do know. I've seen performers ready to die backstage, and go on and give not only a smooth, but an incandescent performance. Running on the energy of "Damn the pain I have to do this!" I was amazed the one time I did it myself. And in a later play clapped loudly for a fellow actor who did his damndest and had to give up onstage. He apologized to everyone as the EMTs carried him off the stage but we knew he tried his very best. "The show must go on" is not just a saying it is a battle cry. And a courage filled with love. I am glad Stephen is all right.
Season’s greetings 🖖 to you my lovely fan🎉 where are you from and how long have you been my fan?
I came here just to watch Stephen interviewing him with a burst appendix
Didn't see this when it aired. Watching it now after Colbert explained the exquisite agony he was in that night ... it's painful.
You've made my day Bradley.
Thanks for your support
I've always loved Bernstein, his music, his conducting, etc. I'm thrilled Cooper made a film about him with all three of Bernstein's children giving it their blessing. I believe a large swath of the film was shot at their Connecticut home that Bernstein's children still use to this day. From the small teases I've seen, I think it looks great. I can't wait for it to come out on streaming service.
I think as we move into a post-work world, where we are freed from "labor to survive" akin to how we were freed from "farm to survive" in the past economical revolutions, people will find "work" is not what they hated, but being forced to work on another's dreams is what they hated. Indeed, I think in a post-work society, that society will be drunk on work that stems from self and one's own dreams, and it's going to be so gorgeous to see. Actors and artists are sometimes lucky enough to be financially well off enough to give us a glimpse of this now, but soon, all of society will have this. It doesn't matter what your dream is, if it is super smol and hidden away in the forest, or an omniverse deity level dream, what matters is that it is truly yours. I will check this out, Limitless is one of my personal favorites.
I knew who Leonard Bernstein was. Watched him conduct concerts. He was just so happy to work.
Bradley is a legend.... luv from Sri Lanka
Bradley Cooper is amazing!
My late grandfather adored Leonard Bernstein. As a small child I remember my grandfather setting my brother and I in front of the T.V. to watch the Young Peoples concerts where we learned every instrument in the orchestra. I too learned Peter Wolf from Leonard Berstein.
Love Bradley Cooper he's the best❤
I admire this guy so much -everything he does to make a great movie as well as acting 👏. An hes humble- a great man 🤝 Bradley cooper.
Happy Thanksgiving Stephen Evie and Bradley (that was fun )😍
That makeup is seriously amazing. eat it, CGI.
Same person who did Olman's make up in Darkest Hour? I could barely see Gary Oldman but for the sparkle in his eyes. Truly transformative.
That Cooper spent YEARS working on this work is beyond impressive!! Bravo!
As a straight man, Bradley Cooper is one of those guys who, when women I know drool over him, I get it ☝️
Congratulations on all of your success and I look forward to seeing this movie x
❤Bradley, multitalented superstar❤Iconic❤love from Finland
Steve was literally dying during this interview. I think he did the interview pretty well all things considered.
Amazing show!!! Thank you!!
loved the movie, great cast, both Bradley and Carey deserve oscars!
Bradley looked so much like Leonard that within the first minute I was confused.
Mom spotted the Bradley while I told her that the scene was very clearly the real Leonard.
Nearly shat the couch when I recognized Bradley’s eyes.
What an amazing film. Hats off.
underrated talent of our generation!
Thanks for much for your support
I can't wait to watch this
Amazing Colbert! what can I say
This dude is just awesome
Can't wait for Maestro. This movie will get nominated for Oscars.
I use music to get comfortable and to connect to a deeper part of myself and others. Music has a healing property It's a type of art therapy one can say. 🤗
Thanks so much for your support
Thank you Stephen 😊
My friend was in the recording booth with Bernstein for that famous final concert of Beethoven 7. He said he had his oxygen mask in one hand, and a cigarette in the other. I wish I could have worked with him, looking forward to this movie.
Bradley cooper is perfect for this role
What a beautiful uncontentious man he is
Do you mean unpretentious?
A very good choice for walk-on music!
4:52 Rocket emerges! That laugh!
Bradley Cooper: "We're both sick..."
Stephen: "Hold my beer."
that intro music is from bernstein's candide. the first time i got to know it was as the dick cavett show theme. the second time i came across it was in a piece by mozart that was playing on the radio one day: it was the very same succession of notes but without the syncopation. i thought for sure the dcshow lifted the notes from mozart for its theme only to find out later that it was bernstein who had picked it up. so it just makes me wonder who mozart may have got it from.
1:47 OMG "IT was only for me to {mess} up (Lady Gaga's singing)" - Bradley
And John Oliver was SPOT on saying he looked better here 😂
That was one hell of a hug.
Nothing special. Not even longer than 3 seconds. You must not have gotten any hugs in your life.
Sad.
That was a hug of great admiration and respect you can tell as you watch this interview how much Stephen is enamored of this role and the dedication he put into it .. hugs are good medicine the best ones are even longer than this .
@@saint6563 you're trying to kid me? Big, strong guys - tough guys, with the most luscious moustaches, you know, they're constantly coming up to me - tears in their eyes - to tell me I'm the most perfect hugger.
Hugging another man while dealing with a burst appendix is absolutely crazy. Good on you Colbert
Had to watch parts again to see if I could tell how much pain Colbert was in and nope!
Season’s greetings 🖖 to you my lovely fan🎉 where are you from and how long have you been my fan?
I love this, thank you stephen colbert. The tonight show doesnt have to just be jokes and polite banter. I love this serious beautiful talk about the making of the film and even serious talk about bradley coopers life and Leonard Bernstein. Please more of this on the tonight show. I absolutley loved it.
Nice Candide intro by the band !!
Bradley Cooper will be considered one of the great directors in the next 20 years.
Dreaming big!
Maestro is the longest movie i'm trying to see on netflix. More than 2 hours and still on 10 minutes. Maybe until 2024 I will finish to see it. I don't even know who Maestro is but Bradley Cooper is dope ✌️
3:53 ❤
4:04 ❤
Coop! 💕👏👍
I have been in love Bradley, I am a Nigerian, I know we can't have anything but please tell me you love me too as a fan. I love you, beautiful man!!!!
I posted a video about Leonard Bernstein on my UA-cam channel that documents what he was really doing on stage as a conductor. There's a phenomenon in the press where they pick 2 or 3 classical musicians and designate them as SACRED COWS. No matter what the sacred cows do on stage, the press refers to it as "the greatest." Bernstein was one of those sacred cows. The television appearances he did show him adding trumpets to the orchestra with Beethoven's symphonies and then when the interviewer asks him about Beethoven's ability to orchestrate, he says " IT'S BAD. He has the trumpets sticking out and they're drowning out everybody else!"
Respect to papa bear for doing this with a ruptured appendix
I've love him since Silver Linings and can't wait to see this film
That’s an amazing performance by him (and J. Lawrence) and is an underrated film.
Thanks for your beautiful comment
Cooper's aging like fine wine. I first saw him on screen in "Failure To Launch" and thought he was an awful actor. It's amazing how far he has come since then.
He was meant to be one dimensional as a side kick in that movie. You are misled. He was always an amazing actor and a complete cinephile. His work in limitless was amazing. Watch him on inside the actors studio, he was always into the craft but took simplistic roles to get his foot in the door to make the movies he really loves as an intellectual.
Stephen please stop interrupting your guests.
Also, I’m glad you recovered from your ruptured appendix and sepsis.
Season’s greetings 🖖 to you my lovely fan🎉 where are you from and how long have you been my fan?
He is our clint eastwood or robert redford of this generation
Yes! That is SO true.
Hey, thanku mr galusha my h.s. eng lit teacher. I know what a Tone Poem means.... wow 😳, "spirit of a piece more than just characters." Sounds wondrous. ❤
Nice reference to Candide by the band.
I’m all in on that Mouth Full of Bees franchise.
Kazo came out of retirement to do Oldman's makeup on The Darkest Hour. Apparently he's not retired anymore.😉
That's what I thought!
Gary Oldman's Darkest Hour make up immediately came to mind.
Dang, Bradley still looks great!
Thanks for your support
I need to talk about that latin jazz arrangement of Glitter and be Gay!! HOLY SHIT IT AMAZEBALLS
❤
I grew up when Bernstein was everywhere. He was in fact a genius at what he did, one of those things being womanizing. But hey, it "was the times", right?
Amazing movie! Bradley lost weight but this haircut suits him more!
Gotta be a very strong contender for Best Actor Oscar next year.🎉
Season’s greetings 🖖 to you my lovely fan🎉 where are you from and how long have you been my fan?
My mom went to a Young People’s Concert with Peter and the Wolf!
"Glitter and Be Gay" as an intro, nice!
He's a marvel. With hindsight, his hands are pale and trembling, but I don't know if I'd know something was wrong if I didn't know something was wrong.
Cooper, the guest, says 'sorry to interrupt' to Colbert. Yes, Brad, that's how it feels to be on that show.
Just hand him the Oscar now.
Baggy suits are back in? Haven't seen that fit in ages
