  • In this video, I am going to show you how I took the standard Praetor model from the Age of Darkness box set, and made him my own with a couple of conversions. While this video will show you the exact steps I took to convert my version of the Pretor model, there are a ton of useful techniques in here that I know you can use to make your own unique character model.
    As always, please feel free to comment below or reach out to me on Instagram if you have any questions on my videos, I'd also love to see any of your work so send it on over!

      Just don't tell the Inquisition!
      While every weapon in warhammer is over-scaled, I always felt like 30k tried to at least keep to somewhat more reasonable proportions but these new praetors kinda threw that out the window. Like the forge world praetor's paragon blade is literally half the length of this one.

    The conversion is amazing and the work you’ve done is incredible.
    And while I agree in principle that you should make your characters unique and your own, the sculpts on these models are amazing and I can’t and won’t shame anyone for not converting them.
    You may find it difficult to convert, because it is made to get the maximum amount of detail out of plastic, not to mix and match like the Aeldari exarch.

      Thank you and I hope I did not come off as too judging on this video, as I was really just trying to say that, for myself I can't leave a stock praetor model alone for the reasons provided. But whatever anyone does with their models is their own choice and it not my goal to bully anyone into interacting with their hobby in any certain way, instead I am trying to provide some inspiration and my thought process into how I interact with this hobby, for people to pick and choose what they want to take away from my videos.
      Granted I did deride some of the design choices of the sculpt a bit...

    Actualy, that way of taking the sword is very close to the one used at the end of the XVI century that soon evolucionate to the modern spanish style, where we see some rings in the sword to protect the finger that goes that way, so I realy found it, pretty convinient.

  • @dekai7992

    Very cool result! And I agree, converting these Praetors is definitely a good idea. They're great, characterful models, but they are so recognisable that all these identical ones kicking around on gaming tables will be sticking out like sore thumbs. Following your example, I took the other Praetor from the box, gave him weapon, head, shoulder pad, and backpack swaps, left off the cape, and turned him into a Warsmith.
    Looking forward to what you're up to next for the Heresy!

    • @dekai7992
      @dekai7992 2 роки тому

      @@AmnioticlyTanked Sure. These are the bits:
      -shoulder pads from the Forge World Mk III Techmarine
      -servo-arm backpack from the old 90s white metal Techmarine (thus creating a conversion made up of the newest and the oldest model parts I own)
      -the head of a Thunder Hammer from the Deathwatch Veterans sprue (I shaved off one of the faces and glued on the "hook" from the Praetor's original axe blade)
      -for the head, I'm still torn on whether to use the Mk II helmet from the new Spartan sprue or the bare one from the FW Mk III Techmarine. Both look very cool, so I'll paint up both and then decide.
      I also drastically shaved down some of the Praetor's ornaments, as IW don't concern themselves with such pretentious nonsense.

  • @bryanscott8528
    @bryanscott8528 2 роки тому +1

    Great points about all the newer GW characters being all "samey" and the effort which has to go in to make the character your own. Many won't put in this effort (easy head / shoulder / weapon swaps). But going the extra-mile shows your love and dedication to your hobby, the praetor will be yours and yours alone right! As always my friend, looks cracking!

    • @AmnioticlyTanked
      @AmnioticlyTanked  2 роки тому +1

      I guess thats the trade off to get with the increased complexity of the modern plastic kits and CAD design. You get much more "dynamic" and intricate sculpts but they are way way harder to convert.
      Saying all that though, I started playing at the turn of 3rd edition, so at the time almost all character models were metal so I guess we are in a better place now.. Would much rather sculpt a belt buckle than try to saw a pewter arm off and pin a new one in place again!

      @@AmnioticlyTanked If you are shooting from the hip I'm thinking you have great instincts!
      Without pointing fingers or getting super negative I think some of the pitfalls sort of go hand in hand with the type of content that youtube encourages. I get wanting to grow ones channel, but for me personally, I prefer channels that are lean more towards integrity such as yours.

      Thanks again and I can certainly see the lure of falling into many of those pitfalls mentioned, they seem to be all the rage in "UA-cam videos about how to succeeded at UA-cam".
      As far as help goes, the one thing that would be massive is if you can let me know if you find my videos ever start veering down that path. I would like to, one day, monetize this channel but I don't want to inadvertently let go of my channels integrity to do so.

Because the Age of Darkness box is personally my first space marine army and I don't really have any space marine bits for cool conversions yet, I've personally been getting qlot of mileage out of spare Eldar bits for my Blood Angels, especially alot of the helmetless heads- they often have a more elegant and "pretty" feel to them, which I think works well for Blood Angels, as long as you cut off the ears and sculpt hair around them. Just wanted to add that it's a particular brand name, not just a generalization of "green stuff".
      Couple of other creators have done challenge full build of greenstuff. Probably wouldn't recommend THAT much, but it's regularly used as gap fill or a quick detail sculpt to customize.
      There are texture molds, specialized tools, etc if you really want to get into it, but a lot can be done with tools you might have around or even a toothpick.

    I really do just hate the plastic praetors. You've done an absolutely fantastic job, your sculpting is simple and on point, it looks like a natural part of the armor, but the parts of the armor my eyes are drawn most to are the parts you've done yourself. The plastic praetors look like the Michelin man, when I first saw them I thought they were indomitable terminators until I saw the power packs, these aren't artificer armors they're just hot garbage, I know I sound salty for the new 2.0 characters, but they really do make these guys look like the Liberace marines.
    Anyways, you've done a great job, I don't want my little tirade to make it seem like I wasn't a fan of your conversion here, it went very well as usual. I found that if you add milliput to green stuff until you get a lime green color the sculpting material is easier to work with, it's softer and less sticky and I find it overall just easier to work with. As for basing it depends what you've got in mind for where you see the guy fighting. I think if this guy is meant to be a praetor fighting in the siege of terra go for an urban style base, lots of rubble, lots of dust

      100% agreed with you on the new praetors. Their aestitic is massively different than anything for the heresy up to this point and I felt they were over designed.but one of the reasons indidn this conversion was to see if I could take a model I really didn't like and turn it into something I did.
      Thanks for the tip on mixing milliput in with greenstuff and ill have to try it out. Do you know if apoxie sculpt + greeenstuf works the same way, or should I just go out and order some millilut?

      @@AmnioticlyTanked I have never used apoxie sculpt in general so I can't even compare it to milliput, it looks similar enough, but I just don't know. Give it a test on a piece you don't care about or piece of cardboard and see if it performs better than just greenstuff because you obviously don't want to put it on something like a nice primarch conversion and find out it cracks

    • @AmnioticlyTanked
      @AmnioticlyTanked  2 роки тому +1

      Gave it a try and it works great together. Its sandable too boot so its great for things that need to be smooth and have sharp edges. Going to be leaning on a mix of greenstuff and apoxie sculpt heavily in an upcoming indominus terminator Conversion video

    • @AmnioticlyTanked
      @AmnioticlyTanked  2 роки тому +1

      I love that idea and just pulled up ebay to go bits shopping. Outside of the chain weapons from necro corpse grinders I am a bit stuck for inspiration though as I think that the space shark primary visual cues come from their tribal patterns on the armor which would be done via painting.
      Speaking of painting, I do still need to do a space shark painting video as well. Just need to find a single space shark decal as well.
