Authenticity is vital to Perry, who remembers the time he was at Rada, rehearsing with fellow actors, when a secret onlooker turned out to be George Bernard Shaw. “He said, ‘I enjoyed your show tremendously. I laughed a lot. But you’ve got to understand one rule of comedy: you must have reality, otherwise it’s rubbish.’” In any case, thanks to its successful repeats Dad’s Army is guaranteed immortality. But to what does Perry attribute our enduring love of Captain Mainwaring and co? “It’s because we reminded the British people of their finest hour. It had wobbly back projection and cardboard scenery, but also the truth… and great artists that brought it to life.”
Simon Blackwell ‘To create comedy that generations of people genuinely love is rare, and he managed it time and again’. Perry’s work on the show - along with that of the producer, David Croft - created one of the most popular British television programmes of all time’.
Jack Dee ‘Amazing contribution to British telly. Watched Dad's Army only yesterday. Still as funny as when I watched it as a kid.’
Vicki Michelle ‘a brilliant comedy writer & true gentleman. He leaves us such a legacy’
Ian Lavender ‘Jimmy, he has been a part of my life for such a long time. ‘He was half of one amazing partnership, it brings back so many wonderful memories… lots of good times together with much laughter…’
David Schneider ‘Thanks to Jimmy Perry for the sublime Dad’s Army, the perfect sitcom, and for making me laugh for over 40 years.’
Shane Allen, BBC controller of comedy commissioning, said: ‘Jimmy Perry is a Goliath of British comedy writing. His work will be enjoyed and appreciated for many years to come’.
Miranda Hart ‘Thank you Jimmy Perry. You made our world a funnier and brighter place.’
Nigel Farage tweeted: Jimmy Perry created and co-wrote the fantastic Dad's Army, my favourite comedy of all time.'
Tom Watson 'We grew up laughing at Jimmy Perry's hilarious characters. One of our greatest TV writers who will not be forgotten.'
Ruth Madoc ‘Being on set was quite hard work, but great fun. We weren’t allowed to laugh. One particular series we’d been naughty giggling on set. This didn’t go down very well with David and Jimmy, so they made us T-shirts saying, ‘Comedy is a serious business’. We were told in no uncertain terms’.
Frank Williams “Dad’s Army was one of the happiest periods of my life, it was a wonderful role to work on.”
TV comedy producer Jon Plowman said, “The quality of his work was consistently brilliant”, adding that Jimmy and his co-writer David Croft came as a package. He described them as “comedy revolutionaries”, saying, “They made it look easy; we know it is not.”
Chris Jarvis ‘this sitcoms are pure gold & will live on.’
Jeffrey Holland ‘There is no doubt that he and David created some of the most memorable and iconic characters and moments in television sitcom history and as such, has left us with a wonderful legacy we can look back on for many years to come. I am proud to have been a part of so many of his series’.
Mark Braxton ‘There is a light that never goes out - and its name is Jimmy Perry’
Perry admits to being bowled over by the continuing success of his Home Guard comedy: “Isn’t it amazing? Let me tell you, I’m overwhelmed.”
Appointed an OBE in 1978, Jimmy Perry published his autobiography, A Stupid Boy, in 2002 and received a British Comedy award for lifetime achievement in 2003.

Can’t believe the BBC are now giving a warning before every episode telling folk “the contents may cause offense”
Are they? Pillocks.
They are culpable in the dumbing down of the population and nothing more than political tools.
To avoid complaints from people who'd look for any excuse to bitch about something, blame social media for giving these people platforms to make a fuss.
@@JohnBloggs-m8lyeah, social media has ruined human dignity
@@JohnBloggs-m8l social media is one part of issue sure but the people that run the BBC nowadays are definitely a bigger part of the issue. They’ve taken the jewel of British Television and rubbished it immensely over the years.
They were all brilliant actors ❤❤❤
The verger is lowkey one of the best characters. His face and expressions are priceless.
"VANDAAALS!"
“The verger has been taken from us !!!”
I never tire of watching this show ,seen em all
The script, the actors, oh, my! these episodes are great!
Always loved British Comedy.
stands the test of time .Always good for a much needed laugh!
This is one of my favorite series of all time. I love the actors and the characters they play. I love the humor and excitement. And the ambiance of the era of both in the era portrayed and when it was made.
Always wonderful what a pleasure thanks you all
I loved the way the king flew past at 75mph in an A4 Pacific from LMS
Wrong it's from the London Northeastern Railway lNER
Yes, it really needed to be a SR locomotive. A Schools class or such.
One of the best episodes!!!!!
Another Dad's Army Episode I hadn't seen before loved it especially being a Railway fan!💂🔫🤴👩🔧🚂🚃🛤️🇬🇧
one of my favorite
One of the first rules of effective communication is , " know your audience " ; with this in mind, I suspect that many in your audience are of an age that they would find this video more enjoyable with C.C. In any case, thanks for posting this episode !
26:40: the hole bloody cast. Absolutely remarkable line up
I couldn't agree more.
After all these years I am watching a show that I didn't like first time around.
Just the best.
Thank you 😊
I love how they used one of Gresley's A4 Paccifics for the King's train .
I love Jones he always so funny 😂
"The king's coming, Don't panic, the king's coming".
I love his voluntary heart😅, that everything is an announcement and how he is ALWAYS that little bit out of sync when coming to attention😂😂😂
I loved dads army when I was a kid I could see the funny side of it back then,
And growing up in Ireland we had nothing to watch only for the English stations.
Ohh we had wonderful RTE 1.... And Sometimes HTV If the weather was right 🤦♂️😂
Love how the brake wheel comes thrown in from the side of screen lol
10:02 Captain Mainwaring is finally upset about Pike's mollycoddling and just yells his orders out of rage. That was quite funny👌👍😂
wonderful British comedy.Thank You for the upload.
I finally subscribed and it's all because I love Dad's Army...Don't Panic!
HAHAHAHA, BLOODY DEDICATED THESE CHAP'S REALLY... 😂😂😂
Frazer: "Joe Walker. You'll burn in the Devil's own private furnace."
Walker: "What are ya talkin' about? Who got it for him in the first place?"
This just gave me the happiest moment of my day X}
He didn't mean the furnace. He meant the sugar.
Thank you very much for uploading more and more episodes of Dad’s Army. I have known it for years, but now, it has been a nightly companion!
giving me a laugh, putting me in better mood in this very cifficult and sad times for me.Thank you and carry on! Ginette Ashkenazy
@@fjccommish Y'know, watching it again, you're right, but I still think it's a killer line.
Watch this almost every day i love it sad isnt it😀
Ik zou zeggen wees welkom dan op genoemde page.. .van verslaafden ... hihi
It's not sad. It shows good taste and an excellent sense of humour! I watch it almost every day too and I don't think we're the only ones.
I believe the commenter meant it's sad we don't have anymore such quality comedy shows nowadays..
"We can't stop the train! Don't panic!" LOL
i do laugh when the warden yells out TURN THAT LIGHT OUT LOL
A great episode, thanks for uploading. The station office/waiting room clock is stuck at 5:30 - probably a wartime shortage of spare parts.
Peter Sanders
Fabulous series yours is the best quality upload compared to all the other dads army uploads :-)
YES BUT SADLY THIS VERSION IS SPOILED BY SUBTITLES. ALWAYS SOME FLY IN THE OINTMENT.
the railway station at the time of filming was in the process of being restored. I understand a member of the cast had a real footplate ride on the tank engine
Where the real station and what happened to the engine and the coaches and that truck?
The station is Weybourne, situated on the North Norfolk Railway. I believe the tank engine is currently at the Northampton and Lamport Railway and in not in operational condition
Id forgotten when they shoved the vicar, the verger and Hodges to the back, then the mayor😂😂
@20:26 the music is 'The Devil's Gallop'. The same music that plays when the police are chasing Sir Digby Chicken Caesar.
I wonder what the passengers on the train thought when they were reversing and that.
It was that day seeing 6 home guardsmen driving a train that some old Reverend guy at one of stations said to himself "what if it had a face" whence Thomas the Train was born.
I've not seen a single fuzzie-wuzzie on this show.
Did you folks notice, Mainwaring did not get lost on way to train station.
The A4, fit for a king
Pikey's cap's got ears! LOL!
But why does this people only make love hearts to some chosen people, not to many who says very good comments????
Maybe the channel owner did not read all the comments, it does become difficult after some time. If it was my channel I would have given you a heart dear...
i like this one
It is still a great show
this episode remind me lot and is very like the postman pat episode postman pat and the runway train
What a fine series! No sex, no writhing in a bed which should be private! All in all one of the best series ever!
Actually now I watch them as an adult I realize Dad's Army and Are You Being Served got a lot of "crap past the radar".
@Rotund Potato "greater freedom of expression"
Tell me you're not serious.
@@annie7367 But the radar couldn't catch it, could it?😏😏
No, just an unmarried older couple at it whenever pike wasn't around... He's a bastard you know.
19:30 Jonesy takes a toke just like Paul McCartney used too...
Brilliant
A little fresh water 😁
I hope that the BBC will repeat this work at the present time
It would be a PC mess. Best to remember it as it was.
Hey Jones watch out for going under bridges!
What happened to Frazier, he was in the interior scenes, and missing on the exterior scenes on the platform and final scene on side of track when the royal train went by and sprayed the rest of platoon. Then they show him spitting out water at end of episode.
kenneth czajkowski ... never seen that : O
The only explanation I can think of is that John Laurie wasn't, for some kind of reason, available on the day of shooting those exterior-scenes. That last scéne, when they all get wet, isn't clearly shot in front of the train, because the yellow background differs from that from the train.
He was sent to guard the front of the station
Funny stuff!
There were 3 men in engine cab when train stops at platform and Henry and fireman get out.
The other man was also on the crew and went to use the toilet shortly after the other two left the cab
British classic comedy just rocks and a measuring stick that how one should write and make tv shows without using toilet humor and unnecessary sex scenes of Hollywood movies/tv shows these days !
23:10 Good thing both characters play cricket.
Great series, youth sentiment
WIth a bunch like this, Walmington on Sea is lost
Lance Corporal Jones, "Shut Up, Shutting UP''
The gun comes with an instruction book. What's an instruction book? Actually I thought the verger was going to suggest putting it in the bandstand.
Love it
I love these episodes, But can anyone figure out why mainering left the pills for his wife on the table ,let alone brought them along on maneuvers? Asking for a friend.
Watching this as the plane carrying Queen Elizabeths coffin is just about to depart Edinburgh Airport !!

That will teach you to ignore comments by uneducated, low-live, organic matter.
When the 2nd layer of scum, under the mud on the sole of your boot speaks, one should ignore it.
20:12 How is the handcar on the same line as the runaway train? They would have just run over it.. haha
It's on a side spur.
fjvideo At 20:09 the train passes on the line closest to the carriages about 2m away, the following shot shows the handcar on the line closest to the carriages at the same approximate distance. I just thought it was funny when I noticed it, it's not like it ruins the show.
@@brendancskinner I stand corrected. I was firmly in the realm of fantasy.

Don´t make ocmedy like this any more
This is a very good and funny program, but wouldn’t they have had vacuum brakes on the train that they could use?
Why can't you present a tomy gun?
9:16 WAS HE GOING TO SPONGE THAT WOMAN DOWN?
was waiting for Jonesy " SIR, I'd like to volunteer to sponge that woman down ! permission to sponge the woman down sir !
What is being a Rhoâdés RheeDárrz ¿¿¿
a very nice episode of dads army it now dowt one of my faverts I wender wey stargent welson thort the steam engine drivers for memders of the station saferth we will never now that not nowing how to stoke a steam engine and pirke is comupeten steam egine driver a part forgetting to inspect her when he took overmiseing the brake handel and forgotten to shut off steam befor putting her in revese like in the early days
I must say..it took me twice to understand
The magic of a bottle of scotch.
sorry about that.
one of the best episodes of Dad's Army possibly because its one which features a steam engine.
with it being war time I guess the railways had to use what rolling stock they could get their hands on. they could have used the hand brakes on the engine and in the Guard's van. the Captain shouldn't have left the meds bottle on the table
Both sides are right..
The London song is quite possibly the most irritating one I've heard in a long time.
26:38 what the devil was Hodges doing the nazi salute for?
N
