I am so grateful for my gap years. I definitely was not ready for medical school after graduation from undergrad. My two gap years allowed me to discover my passion and learn about myself outside of the academic environment. Even if you think you have all of the "boxes checked" and are ready to apply, I would advise taking a year or two away from school. If you find jobs within the public health field and some small volunteering experiences your resume can only get better and more competitive.

I respect the medical profession. But, frankly the process is really stupid.

stupid is an understatement. there is nothing that i want more than being a doctor but holy shit i would rather throw myself into a dumpster fire than to continue being a premed

You should make a video on what are your wrong reasons for pursuing medical school. Because not many people think about this and are narrow minded...

Exactly what I was looking for! I too was unsure whether to apply traditionally or take a gap year because COVID essentially wiped out any chance of clinical experience from my second semester of freshman year till now (rising junior). Thanks Dr. Gray for posting this!!

study as hard as possible! and read a lot of books because reading section of the mcat is most important in canadisn med schools

Patient Transporter is terrible for an application imo and scribing is so common that you wouldn’t stand out (same goes for emt). Try looking into becoming a psychiatric technician! I’ve been one for 3-4 months and I tell you the amount of stuff you got to deal with patients is like a gold mine.

I don’t agree w this, it seems so specialized and not general enough to see medicine as a whole

It’s good to find new and creative ways to get clinical experience (I did by not only doing EMT but becoming paramedic), but Dr. Gray seems to be an advocate of not doing something for the purpose of standing out (though I know other premed advising bodies disagree). Rather, do it out of interest. Idk I wouldn’t be super excited to do pt transporter or scribing. Psychiatric tech could be quite a good gig

If you haven’t submitted yet this admission cycle, you should take a gap year.

I would agree. By the time your application gets verified you’re going to be put in a really late wave and most interview spots will be given before anybody gets a chance to even read your application

@IrwinMunoz The high stat/well qualified/well organized applicants have already applied a month or more ago.

I wouldn't say that. Even Dr. Gray said although July or August is not IDEAL, doesn't mean you won't get accepted.

@@ashellry Dr Gray says a lot of things. But submit now and your application probably won’t be verified until September.
