- How do we know when the status quo is no longer working? What does it take for us to see that the current model needs to be redesigned? For Jay Gosselin it took 12,000 heartbreaking conversations with students to fully understand how badly our model for educational transitions needs to be overhauled.
"Create a life that feels good on the inside, not one that just looks good on the outside." Jay Gosselin, the founder of MentorU and the Discover Year Program is striving for significance.
Jay uses his own non-traditional career path to demonstrate how action, openness, and authenticity are foundational principles when building a purposeful career and life. Jay has travelled to 51 countries, held 19 different jobs, and lived in 7 Canadian cities. His greatest lessons have come through dozens of job rejections, being cut from competitive sports teams, and an abandoned wedding engagement. The combination of insights Jay has gathered from meeting over 13,000 students, conducting research in psychology and education, and his own experiences, enable him to create meaningful programming for young adults striving to build purposeful lives.
To pursue his passion for helping others reach their potential, Jay returned to school at the age of 30, and is currently completing a Master’s degree in educational counselling in his spare time. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I personally recognise myself in this talk. Taking a gap year, or any kind of travel is such a great idea so that you can find out who you are as a person and what you want in life as values and goals. And then, this allows you to go into the industry/career that you really want and not because we're told to!
Lost in Translation! Yes!
Taking a purposeful year off trying to :
Work
Volunteer
Going to the world and build a sense of purpose
Gain an understanding on why you wanna study ?
And then come back .
My parents actually encouraged me to take a gap year

Lucky you, I did an MBA cuz my dad wanted to do an MBA and his partners didn't have the financial means
lucky duck, i'm doing it regardless
My parents think there is something wrong with me for wanting to take a gap year. My dad actually said he's hoping I come back to my senses because there's seriously something wrong with me. HELP ME
My mum made me promise that I don’t go on a gap year

How’d it go? lol
Yes, how did it go
We need to know
I have similar goals. I'm thinking about taking a gap year from school after I graduate with my associates degree in accounting this upcoming August.
4 years later, how did it go?
I don't know if you consider this a gap year but I took two semesters off college to study abroad and it was one of the best experiences of my life! I'm so happy I did it.
Where did you study abroad
me too! i drop out at the vet school for two semesters and now time passed by 4 month, Its a great experience to discover ourself!
I've been having a hard time during my school years and I couldn't find the essential meaning of learning. The concept of gap year really thrills me and I promise to myself that I WILL take a gap year and follow my passion for a whole year!
How’d it go? haha
@@treybenson6550 id like to know too......
but well probably never know
Thankyou for taking about a gap year, my parents and I don’t see eye to eye about this topic, they feel like taking a gap year is just a waste of time when I could be already in university.
Same here...
My parents are the exact same way…
I feel u girl.. Now I'm collecting information about the gap year to make a plan for the whole year and then introduce it to my parents. My goal is to have so many logical reasons why taking a gap year is the better option for me so they have no choice but to agree with me.
I decided tonight with my family, before watching this video, that I'm going to take one. I feel relieved already and I honestly can't wait to work.
Where did u go?
How was it?
Before graduating from highschool, I’ve kinda lost in track of all the plans I set for myself which includes applying for university. My friends were busy with their university application While I’m busy thinking about what I really wanted to do after h/s so I took a year off. My parents were okay with it. but my main goal is to earn money to support my education so I enrolled in college (health care aide program) because it would make a good money. It’s fall and I just started school (6 mos program). I’m planning to travel and spend more time with my family. I’m glad I took a year off
This video is so validating. I took a gap year after highschool and now I'm in my final year burning out- I feel like I need another gap year after this 😪
Not going to lie, this made me cry. I’m so proud to be taking this program this year.
This actually took a lot of the pressure because (party because of my family) I always had the impression that taking a year off was something bad and that it meant that I am lazy or don't pursue any goal or that I just don't have a lot of ambition which stressed me oouuutt.
Well said Jay. Powerful message to our youth and to the parents. Education should be an extension to who we are, to what we love, to our passion and to our strengths. In short, "purposeful" as you said :)
♡
My gap year happened by accident am I am so great full for it. Truly by Gods will.
This is my last semester at college and I'm not going to masters degree after it. instead I'm gonna volunteering in Peru to teach people my native language and learning Spanish in exchange. it will definitely be one of the best experience in my life.
I also think it’s never too late to take a gap year, and there are different kinds of gap year. I am 28, currently on a gap year in France. I loved what I studied in university and have five years of work experience. But after my last job it felt like the right time to reset :)
Jay this was an amazing talk expressing some very important issues! Our team loved every bit of this talk, we look forward to following the growth of your much-needed program: Discover Year!
Thanks to you all at Soap Media! I look forward to meeting your team at some point in the future :)
♥
i'm in my third year of my degree and am going to take a gap year after months of contemplation to better myself and my mental health. I went straight to university after sixth form and regret not taking time to think about my career or mental health so i'm relieved to finally take a break to give myself a mental break to start my final year on a good note.
Currently taking a gap year. My goals are:
1. Enrolled in STEI-K or FMIPA ITB
2. Developing good habit
3. Level up my english skill
4. Level up my body
goodluck untuk besok!!
how was it? did u make it?
Incredibly impactful!
Great talk! At Salem Kolleg we have developed a unique gap year that offers orientation after school and aims to support those who plan to study at university or college in Germany, Switzerland or Austria. This year will be our eighth, so we got a lot of experience with young students and their personal needs.
Such an important message! Incredible job Jay!
Thanks Emily - same to you!!
Thankyou sir for realise me that I am not doing mistake by taking gap year💯
im still deciding on taking a gap year, my mom says she supports me. I wanna take it to sorta find my true purpose in life. once ive done that ill get right back to schooling the very following year.
and where are you now in life?
sending this to my parents thank you!
I took this very personally and seriously considering a gap year after I graduate with my Associates in Accounting from community college.
I see all of these comments of people saying that they followed their passion in the gap year they took, but honestlt I just took a gap year to rest mentally and physically and focus on bettering my mental health. Dont know if I made the right decision.
focusing on your mental health will always be the right decision
Love it👍👍👍
Inspiring
amazing!
This was so insightful!
Thank you
Graduating this 2020. I applied for another major at UNI and got rejected. So I have no choice but to do a gap year. Till I can apply again :/
What's the program he mentioned that helps students during gap years? Can you/How do you join?
inspired my to turn down a natural science place at Cambridge to do a gap year
can they postpone?
You gotta tell us if you did
did you do it?
We all wanna know
wow!
Probably I'm gonna take a gap year . But it's gonna really hard for me cause I do not have european or american or canadian passport. Because of that I need to choose be able to afford programs like volunteering etc. I want to say that Gap year is pretty a dream that is difficult to fulfill for people who do not have a strong passport.
TL:DW?
♥♡♥
i will do years abroad, thats my decision and not my parents ones
Turning a gap year into a "program" like this guy has done seems to be missing the point. The point of a gap year is that it forces you to seek out opportunities and execute them yourself!
@@jaymentoru6753 I did, and it confirmed my suspicion. You are offering coaching services, networking events, and meetings with mentors - all totaling thousands of dollars. This sounds to me like what is typically done in college, or on your own once you get out.
The point of a gap year should be to be thrown into the deep end without the structure of some program like yours, which strikes me as essentially a life coaching program for teenagers. IMO teenagers do not need "life coaching". They need a time to be on their own and realize that they are capable of steering their own lives.
@@discoveryear I have an opinion about the function a gap year should serve and how to best achieve it. And? I fail to see the problem here.
It's a little disingenuous to hide behind "everyone can have their own idea" when that response can apply to basically anything and the topic at hand is precisely what the ideal function of a gap year should be.
I am merely questioning the wisdom of turning spontaneous, self-driven exploration into a paid program.
Yo
I noticed a fallacy in some of his statements. 1 success story of a person does not equate to the population. Instead, you should have stated same statistics
he looks like peralta from brooklyn 99
I have to convince my parents to help me fund my gap year
Why not work?
So why bother to go to college?

Honestly I don't mind breaking myself for a degree or a good paying job, I mean look at robots they're efficient asf
Then you’ll be a robot for the rest of your life
